hen Lisa Folawiyo started designing clothes 20 years ago, she had one goal: to make cool, modern, and fashion-forward clothes for women. She wanted clothes that could be identified as Nigerian but with a contemporary twist. It was about taking what is ours and creating something that intersected the world because even though we come from different parts of the world, fashion is one thing that unites everyone. Although she used traditional fabrics, she always had to think of ways to elevate them to make them more desirable so that they became designs people hadn’t seen or thought about. That’s where the idea of craftsmanship, hand beading and embroidery came from.
The Lisa Folawiyo brand has evolved beyond its signature Ankara designs to work with different textiles, making custom prints and fabrics. Another significant stride is that the brand now also designs for men.
Lisa Folawiyo’s journey in the fashion industry is fascinating; read all about it on pages 8 to 10.
The world as we know it is changing; economic downturns and technology can make some careers extinct in the twinkle of an eye. However, some jobs will never go extinct, regardless of how far technology advances. We analyse those jobs on page 14.

The perfect outfit can make you feel confident, stylish, and ready to take on the world. But even the most stunning look can be ruined if you wear the wrong underwear. Yes, your underwear is the hidden foundation of your outfit, and choosing the right one is just as important as picking the right shoes or accessories. The right underwear makes your clothes fit better, enhances your shape, and keeps you comfortable all day. Let us show you six simple but essential tips for choosing the right underwear for your outfit.
1.
The fabric of your underwear should complement the fabric of your clothes. If you’re wearing light or clingy fabric, like silk or satin, go for smooth, seamless underwear. This prevents visible panty lines (VPL) and keeps your silhouette sleek. On the other hand, if you’re wearing thicker fabrics like denim or wool, you can get away with lace or patterned underwear without it showing through your clothes.
2. MATCH YOUR UNDERWEAR TO YOUR OUTFIT’S FABRIC
CHOOSE THE RIGHT COLOUR
Colour is crucial when it comes to underwear. If you’re wearing light or white clothes, nude or skin-toned underwear is your best bet to avoid visible outlines. For dark outfits, black or deep-coloured underwear works perfectly. And if you feel like adding a little fun, save your bright, bold colours or patterns for days when you know they won’t accidentally peek through your outfit.
3.
The style of your underwear should match the type of bottoms you’re wearing. Thongs or seamless briefs prevent visible lines for tight-fitting pants, dresses, or skirts. If you’re wearing high-waisted trousers or skirts, high-rise underwear provides comfort and support. Boy shorts or cheeky panties are great for loose-fitting clothes, giving you coverage without digging into your skin.
CONSIDER YOUR OUTFIT’S CUT AND DESIGN
5.
No matter how good your underwear looks, it will ruin your day if it isn’t comfortable. Always choose underwear that fits properly, not too tight or loose. Tight underwear can cause discomfort, leave marks on your skin, and even create bulges under your clothes. Conversely, loose underwear can bunch up and shift around, which is equally frustrating. Make sure your underwear feels like a second skin.
4. PICK THE RIGHT STYLE FOR YOUR BOTTOMS THINK ABOUT COMFORT AND FIT USE SHAPEWEAR WHEN NEEDED
Pay attention to the cut of your outfit, especially around the chest and back. For offshoulder or strapless tops, go for a strapless bra. If your outfit has a plunging neckline, try a deep V bra or boob tape for extra lift. For backless outfits, adhesive bras or silicone cups can give you support without ruining your look. The goal is to let your outfit shine without your underwear stealing the spotlight.
6.
Shapewear can be a game-changer for certain outfits, especially body-hugging dresses or fitted clothes. It smooths out lumps and bumps, giving you a polished silhouette. Choose shapewear with the right level of compression for your needs: light for gentle smoothing, medium for more contouring, and firm for maximum sculpting. Just ensure it’s breathable and doesn’t dig into your skin so you stay comfortable all day.
Choosing the right underwear for your outfit doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does make a huge difference. The right undergarments enhance your look, boost your confidence, and keep you comfortable no matter what you wear. So, next time you get dressed, take a few moments to pick the underwear that works best for your outfit. You’ll be amazed at how much better you feel and how flawless your outfit looks from every angle.

Last week, we stood at the crossroads, C is for Choices, examining the weight of decisions and the way they shape our paths. I promised that the next step in our journey through #Unshakable Truths would be D is for Destiny. After all, the choices we make in those pivotal moments are never just about where we are now; they are about where we are meant to be.
But what is destiny? Is it a grand, prewritten script, unyielding to change, ensuring we always end up exactly where we were meant to? Or is it a living, breathing thing—malleable, shaped by the hands of those bold enough to seize it?
Today, while watching Running Point, a Netflix comedy series, I was struck by a curious statement from the lead character. She claimed that even her worst decisions sometimes led to good outcomes. One example stood out — she didn’t stop when she hit another car, which, in turn, meant she arrived just in time to save her brother from choking. It made me pause. If even our mistakes can guide us toward a destined outcome, then does that mean destiny is fixed? That regardless of which turn we take at the crossroads, we will ultimately arrive where we were always meant to be? Or do we have the power to shape it, nudging fate with the force of our conscious decisions?
There are two schools of thought when it comes to destiny. The first believes in an unchangeable fate, an invisible hand that has already carved the path we walk—every joy, every heartbreak, every stumble — predetermined, inevitable. The second believes destiny is fluid, sculpted by the choices we make every day. In this view, life isn’t a map with a single route but a vast ocean where the currents shift depending on our actions.
Maybe the truth, like most things, lies somewhere in between.
Have you ever looked back on your life and realised that the
moments you resisted, the ones that didn’t make sense at the time, led you somewhere unexpectedly right? That missed flight, the heartbreak you thought would break you, the job rejection that forced you onto a path you never considered—all of them leading to something bigger than you could have imagined.
But does that mean it was always meant to happen that way? Or were you simply resilient, #Unshakable enough to make the best of it?
Some people wait for destiny to arrive like a letter in the mail. They assume that if something is meant for them, it will come — no matter what. They call it ‘meant to be.’
But what if destiny isn’t waiting to deliver something to us but rather waiting for us to move toward it?
Perhaps destiny doesn’t just happen—perhaps it is something we claim.
Yes, life has its twists, its mysterious ways of leading us where we need to go. But it is our willingness to take risks, to step forward even when we are unsure, that shapes the kind of destiny we meet at the end of the road.
There is power in choosing your destiny rather than waiting for it.
The poet William Ernest Henley wrote, ‘I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.’ If this is true, then destiny is not a rigid plan but a series of doors — each opening based on whether we have the courage to knock.
The #Unshakable Truth
So, is destiny written in the stars or in the ink of our own hands?
Maybe it is both.
Maybe we are handed the pen, but the script remains unfinished. One thing is certain
— destiny yields to those who move. It bends in favour of those who are willing to stand at the crossroads, stare uncertainty in the face, and make a choice. Even if that choice turns out to be the ‘wrong’ one, perhaps it was never wrong at all — just another way to arrive at where we were always meant to be.
Life is not about waiting for signs from the universe — it is about deciding what we will make of the signs we are given.
So, what will you do with yours?
The next step is yours to take; and that is what makes destiny truly #Unshakable.
‘See’ you next week.
Whenyou think of African fashion with a high-fashion twist, Lisa Folawiyo is a name that instantly comes to mind. A true pioneer in the industry, she transformed Ankara—once seen as everyday fabric—into luxury pieces that have graced international runways and the wardrobes of global fashion icons. But Folawiyo is not just a designer; she’s a storyteller, weaving culture, craftsmanship, and innovation into every piece she creates.
From her early days launching Jewel by Lisa to becoming a globally recognised fashion powerhouse, Folawiyo has always been ahead of the curve. Her designs have been worn by Issa Rae, Lupita Nyong’o, Solange Knowles, and more. She has taken Nigerian fashion beyond borders, showcasing her collections in New York, London, and Milan.
In this interview with THEWILL DOWNTOWN’s Johnson Chukwueke, we dive into the creative mind behind the brand—her journey, the challenges of building a fashion empire, and how she keeps pushing boundaries in an ever-evolving industry. Beyond the dazzling fabrics and signature embellishments, Lisa Folawiyo shares what fuels her creativity, her thoughts on the future of Nigerian fashion, and a little peek into her world outside of fashion.
You’ve been a trailblazer in African fashion with your unique take on Ankara prints. What inspired you to start your journey in fashion design?
It was, for me, the desire to fill an obvious gap that existed in the Nigerian fashion ecosystem. In my opinion, there weren’t enough fashion brands that spoke my fashion language, one that met my personal fashion and style needs. I felt there was a need for a brand that celebrated my identity, culture, and history in a fresh and modern way. And so I thought, ‘You know what? There exists this gap, so I am going to do something about it.’ I set out to do it, and I still am. I’ve always been passionate about fashion, whether it was me forging my personal style or dabbling and having a say in other people’s fashion choices. So even after studying and practicing law, I was still very much swayed in that direction. From a much younger age, I was able to express an innate creative ability evidenced by my love and ability in fine art, for example, or even my hobbies of creating fashion magazines and writing fiction novels, amongst other things. I guess the steering towards the fashion industry was a truly authentic and inevitable move for me.
How would you describe the evolution of your brand since its inception?
The goal and vision were to create really cool clothes that were modern and fashionforward.
You know, fashion is a universal language, all lines, be they geographical, cultural, political, etc, are blurred. We may come from different parts and places with different customs and beliefs, but fashion represents a uniting force. So, it was me taking something that represented us as Nigerians and Africans to create something that intersected the world. A focus was to take what was deemed popular and traditional in terms of fabric, elevate it, and make it more contemporary and fresher, making it more luxurious and globally desirable. This led to the birth of the embellished Ankara. We introduced hand craftsmanship in the forms of beading and embroidery to this already existing fabric, and this way, we texturised and completely changed its face and people’s idea of the fabric. From a fabric so simple and common to a luxurious, highly coveted fashion symbol. To date, we continue to do what we set out to do, and, God willing, we will continue to do it better, stronger and greater as we evolve.
If I may, I will advise that one starts with whatever little they have and as you get into a rhythm, pursue channels of funding, whether personal, private or public. Another challenge faced is the scarcity of qualified expertise. Especially in the technical field. So there is a small pool of experts and welltrained tailors, seamstresses, and technical staff. Of course, in an environment that’s not the most enabling for businesses to thrive, there will always be the burden of infrastructural and logistical challenges that have a negative effect on the growth of the business. The truth is there will always be challenges faced, even as your business thrives, but we must begin to see these challenges or setbacks as opportunities for innovation, dynamism, and solutions. My policy remains: ‘Push through and make it work for you.’
“I am a big believer
in collaboration. Collaborations with other designers, brands, and other creatives open all parties to new markets, demographics, and opportunities they may not have had access to beforehand. ”
“Once I begin to think in a certain direction, I start to think on words that express what I want to say. Interesting fact: I surround myself in the studio with words that further reflect my inspiration, and that starts to serve as a design guide. ”
For example, as a sneakerhead, I would love to collaborate with a global sneaker brand. (Just putting out there (laughs); you never know) Having already collaborated with three shoe brands, Shekudo and Zashadu based in Nigeria and one based in America, collaborating with a renowned sneaker brand would be a dream. I am also a believer in collaborating with manufacturing or production hubs. Because, as a chosen model, we practice slower and more sustainable fashion, there sometimes is a need for us to increase production to meet demand, and so working with hubs that are able to offer us solutions in this regard. It is important that as a brand we collaborate with brands that align with our ethos of culture, community, craftsmanship, creativity, innovation, sustainability, and excellence.
Can you walk us through your creative process when designing a new collection?
What challenges did you face while establishing a luxury fashion brand in Africa, and how did you overcome them?
I am sure many share this story. Where your passion and dedication to do something far outweighs your means. I was so driven by my vision and dream to make a mark in the fashion space, that money was probably the last thing on my mind. And of course, no one tells you how capital intensive and unpredictable running a successful fashion brand is, and for this reason, funding the business is usually the biggest challenge faced.
Your designs have been featured globally. How do you balance preserving African heritage with appealing to an international audience? People love beautiful things. People appreciate the love, the workmanship, and the stories behind a piece of clothing. I believe this is what I am here to do as a designer, design and make beautiful clothes from my own unique creative perspective, and interwoven with my own unique stories and excellent craftsmanship. And like I said earlier, beautiful things are appreciated by all and sundry. There is no dividing line. That I am of African heritage, creating and designing beautiful clothes in Nigeria is, in my opinion, what ignites and keeps global attention. Not only am I able to create and design pieces that anyone who loves and understands fashion can relate to and desire, but also give them an avenue to come into my world, to be able to see fashion through a completely different lens and alter and, or expand their world view and perspective. It’s what the goal and vision have been from the onset. Taking that which is a part of my identity and what is familiar to me, with which I create something that the rest of the world can be a part of.
Collaboration is a significant part of the fashion industry. Are there any dream collaborations you’d like to pursue?
I am a big believer in collaboration.
“I believe this is what I am here to do as a designer, design and make beautiful clothes from my own unique creative perspective, and interwoven with my own unique stories and excellent craftsmanship.”
Collaborations with other designers, brands, and other creatives open all parties to new markets, demographics, and opportunities they may not have had access to beforehand. So yeah, collaborations are definitely something that I am always looking into enthusiastically.
Of course, it always starts with being inspired by something or wanting to express an emotion or mood, reflect on a time, or feel a need to say something in one’s heart. From recalling memories of my childhood and interpretations of my culture to a need to lend my voice on issues pertinent to me to something as simple as a print, artwork, street style, or a particular individual or group of people, I am inspired by many things. Once I begin to think in a certain direction, I start to think on words that express what I want to say. Interesting fact: I surround myself in the studio with words that further reflect my inspiration, and that starts to serve as a design guide. And then sketching begins. I may resort to my archives to revisit old designs and reinterpret them with new sketches. Once I am fully satisfied with the sketches, we begin pattern-making for the pieces that need patterns. Otherwise, we go straight into calico samples. From the first samples, we are able to edit, reconstruct or completely change the design direction. This is usually a long process of finetuning, and when satisfied, we begin model fitting, during which fittings continue with the modifications and editing. Alongside this process, or even before, I work with a textile designer on prints for the season. Once samples are approved by the whole team, we go on to production, marketing strategies(shoots, shows, etc), and finally, sales.
What exciting projects or collections can we look forward to from Lisa Folawiyo in the near future?
With the brand celebrating its 20th year in 2025, I plan to do something quite exciting to mark our journey so far. Maybe a retrospective where we get to revisit, rework, and interpret earlier works. Who knows. My hope is always to wake up every morning with the fire and the passion to put my creative juices to work so everything thereon is exciting.
Where do you see the Lisa Folawiyo brand in the next five years?
Owning our space and maintaining a model that is authentic to who we are as a brand with continued and even greater global success.
As a mother and entrepreneur, how do you balance your personal life and your thriving career?
God first. And always. All that I am, and I do, is by the grace of God. I am centred by the Word, and by the Spirit of God. He is my help, my peace and my rest. And the unshakeable support of family.
I am married to the most wonderful man who gives me the space and freedom to do what I have been called to do: give myself fully to my designer self. My husband creates balance for me, he lifts me up and brings me back to earth. He allows me to be and is such a great support, my number one cheerleader. Both my incredible children are such great support who love and respect what mummy does. I have learned to use my time wisely, giving my time and energy where and when necessary. I also have a work family, my team, a great team that is able to take the edge off. It’s just knowing where I am needed and when I am needed and giving time where and when necessary.
How do you unwind or find inspiration outside of fashion?
I love to travel not only to unwind but also to explore and search for inspiration. I am also someone who enjoys being on my own, and so being by myself watching mindless TV or flicking through the pages of fashion magazines is so relaxing for me. Especially after a long day when your brain has been overtaxed (laughs). Dinner and long conversations with my husband are food for my soul. Phone conversations with my children(both away for school) bring ease and joy. Exercise is also key. I love to entertain at home with family and friends. I enjoy going to my favourite restaurants and discovering new ones, too. Regular long gisting sessions with my sisters, Karen and Sike, and my sister friends is something I eagerly look forward to. I also let my hair down by dancing and listening to good music.
What’s one thing about Lisa Folawiyo that people might be surprised to know?
I am so particular about oral hygiene. Teeth are very important to me. From the way they look and how well we take care of them. I don’t think this is surprising, as I believe everyone feels this way. Hopefully. I also detest flies. Insects generally, but flies most especially. They just buzz and hang around unnecessarily. Yuck! (laughs).

Anose job, or rhinoplasty, is one of the most common cosmetic procedures performed worldwide. People opt to have this surgery done for a variety of reasons; some desire to improve their appearance, while others require it to address breathing issues or injury-related deformities. Rhinoplasty has advantages, but there are risks as well. Understanding the surgery’s benefits and drawbacks is crucial before deciding. We will explore three major advantages and three potential downsides of rhinoplasty surgery.
PROS OF RHINOPLASTY SURGERY CONS OF RHINOPLASTY SURGERY
1. IMPROVED APPEARANCE AND CONFIDENCE
The improvement of facial features is one of the main reasons individuals undergo rhinoplasty. A person’s appearance can be significantly altered by even little changes to the nose, which is a key component of the face. A more balanced and attractive face can be achieved with rhinoplasty, whether the goal is to reduce a hump, reshape a wide nose, or correct asymmetry. Individuals’ self-confidence increases when they are satisfied with their appearance. This can benefit a variety of aspects of life, including social relationships and career prospects.
2. BETTER BREATHING AND HEALTH BENEFITS
. RISK OF COMPLICATIONS AND SIDE EFFECTS
Rhinoplasty has dangers, just like any other surgery. Swelling, bruising, and soreness are typical side effects that may persist for several weeks. Excessive bleeding or infection may occur in certain situations. An allergic reaction to anaesthesia is another possibility. Furthermore, not every surgery proceeds according to plan. Some individuals may develop breathing issues or an unnaturallooking nose that may need to be fixed with additional surgery.
Rhinoplasty is not just for beauty; it can also help people who have breathing difficulties. Some individuals have structural issues in their noses, like a deviated septum (when the wall between the nostrils is not straight), which can make breathing difficult. This can lead to snoring, sleep apnea, and sinus infections. A functional rhinoplasty can correct these issues, making it easier to breathe and improving overall health. People who have struggled with blocked airways often experience better sleep and increased energy levels after surgery.
3. CORRECTION OF BIRTH DEFECTS OR INJURIES
While some people get nose injuries from sports or accidents, others are born with nasal deformities. In these situations, rhinoplasty can help restore the nose’s form and functionality. For instance, a person who has a crooked nose from an injury sustained as a child can have it straightened. By addressing these problems, rhinoplasty helps people feel more at ease and normal in their skin, in addition to improving attractiveness.
.LONG RECOVERY PROCESS
Rhinoplasty is a long-term process. Patience and time are necessary for recovery. Although the initial swelling may subside in a few weeks, it may take up to a year for the full results to show. Patients may suffer nasal congestion, irritation, and sensitivity while the healing process is ongoing. Daily activities might be restricted for the first few weeks. Complications can be avoided by avoiding strenuous exercises, wearing glasses, or even blowing your nose.
3.IT CAN BE EXPENSIVE
Rhinoplasty is not cheap, and in most cases, health insurance does not cover cosmetic procedures. The cost of the surgery depends on the surgeon’s experience, the complexity of the procedure, and the clinic’s location. In addition to the surgery fee, there are additional costs like consultations, medications, and possible revision surgeries if the first result is unsatisfactory. For those who do not have extra funds, this can be a major disadvantage.

Picture this: the world is buzzing around you, and you have emails, deadlines, traffic, and endless notifications, but you still manage to remain as calm as a Sunday morning. Sounds dreamy, doesn’t it? The good news is that finding inner peace isn’t just for yoga retreats or spa days. It’s about sneaking a little serenity into your everyday chaos. Think of it as your personal “chill pill” strategy; no prescription is needed. If you are ready to get your “chill pill,” grab a cup of tea or coffee, take a deep breath, and let’s explore some simple ways to keep your cool in a busy world.
TO RECHARGE
We live in a hyperconnected world, but sometimes the best way to find peace is to disconnect. Schedule time each day to step away from screens—no emails, no social media, no distractions. Use this time to take a walk, read a book, or enjoy the silence. A digital detox, even for an hour, can work wonders for your mental clarity and well-being.
How you begin your day sets the tone for everything that follows. Instead of diving straight into emails or social media, carve out a few moments for yourself. This could be as simple as a five-minute meditation, stretching, or journaling your thoughts. A consistent morning ritual helps ground you, giving you a sense of control and calm before the day’s demands take over.
PRACTICE THE ART OF SAYING ‘NO’
Many of us struggle with overcommitting, and it’s no wonder our schedules feel overwhelming. Learning to say “no” isn’t selfish—it’s self-care. By setting healthy boundaries, you create space for things that matter and avoid unnecessary stress. Remember, every “yes” to something is a “no” to something else, so choose wisely.
EMBRACE MINDFUL BREATHING
One of the simplest yet most powerful tools for cultivating inner peace is your breath. Whenever you feel overwhelmed, take a moment to focus on your breathing. Try inhaling deeply for four counts, holding for four counts, and exhaling for six counts. This slows your heart rate, calms your mind, and brings you back to the present moment.
Inner peace isn’t about achieving a grand, stress-free life but finding joy in the little things. Savour a cup of tea, appreciate a sunset, or laugh at a silly joke. Gratitude for life’s simple pleasures can shift your perspective and help you stay centred, even on the busiest days.
Today’s world is fast-paced, and finding inner peace is more than just a luxury—it’s necessary. You can build a less chaotic and meaningful life by embracing small but intentional changes in your daily routine. Remember, peace doesn’t come from a quieter world, it comes from a calmer mind. So, take a deep breath, start small, and let your journey toward inner peace begin.
No matter the economic climate, people will always need medical care. Doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and other healthcare workers are essential in every society. With an ageing population and an increasing focus on public health, careers in healthcare continue to grow. If you have a passion for helping others and job security is a priority, this is one of the most stable fields you can delve into.
In today’s digital world, technology rules everything—from businesses to personal data. We all need technology in what we do. That’s why IT professionals, especially cybersecurity experts, are always in demand. As cyber threats grow and companies move more operations online, skilled professionals who can protect sensitive information and maintain systems are crucial. Whether software development, cloud computing, or ethical hacking, the tech industry is a safe bet for career longevity.
Education is the foundation of every society, and teachers play a vital role in shaping the future. While traditional classroom educators remain in demand, the rise of e-learning has expanded the field. Online tutors, curriculum developers, and instructional designers are now essential, especially with the shift toward digital education. If you love knowledge-sharing, this career offers both job security and flexibility.
BY JOHNSON CHUKWUEKE
We live in an ever-changing world where industries rise and fall, but job security is a luxury. Economic downturns, global crises, and technological disruptions can make some careers extinct overnight. But while some industries struggle to stay afloat during tough times, others remain steady, even thriving when the economy takes a hit. The key to long-term career stability? Choosing a recession-proof profession. These are careers that remain in high demand regardless of economic fluctuations. Whether you’re a fresh graduate, considering a career switch, or simply futureproofing your job, we will highlight some of these professions that are always in demand.
While white-collar jobs may fluctuate, skilled trade jobs such as electricians, plumbers, mechanics, and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) technicians remain indispensable. As long as homes and businesses exist, there will always be a need for people who build, fix, and maintain essential services. Unlike many desk jobs, these professions are hands-on, well-paying, and impossible to outsource completely—making them one of the most recession-proof career paths.
Businesses and individuals need financial guidance. Accountants, auditors, and financial analysts help manage money, ensure compliance, and make strategic financial decisions. Whether the economy is booming or in crisis, their expertise is required to keep finances in check. Plus, with the rise of financial technology (fintech), opportunities in this field continue to expand.
While no job is entirely immune to economic downturns, some careers offer more stability than others, and these fields continue to thrive no matter the economic landscape. If you’re thinking long-term, investing in one of these recession-proof careers might just be the smartest move for your future.

What else would make a woman stay after finding out her partner has been cheating on her for years?
Money? Yes. Love? Yes. But for me, none of these factors were the reasons why I stayed after discovering that Chuks, my fiancé, was not only cheating on me but secretly married.
Until now, Chuks was the best thing that had ever happened to me. We went from talking every day to being inseparable. Or at least that was how it felt. I truly believed the connection we shared was real. Chuks was a good man; he was intentional and thoughtful and everything I wanted in a partner. The fact that I had dreamt of him before meeting him felt like the universe’s way of confirming that he was my person. So, when he asked me to be his girlfriend after four months of friendship, my answer was a resounding yes.
One memory I will never forget was our first night together. The way he touched me felt like he was reading my body like poetry. He didn’t rush. His hands, lips, and entire being were focused on me, and I felt seen in a way I never had before. We made love until we collapsed in each other’s arms, and when we thought we had no energy left, we found ourselves reaching for each other again. It wasn’t just sex; it was intimacy, and it made me feel like we were meant to be.
Chuks never gave me a reason to doubt his love. He was a provider, my biggest cheerleader, and always invested in my growth and happiness. Sometimes, I
wondered what I had done to deserve someone like him. I was over the moon when he proposed to me on my 27th birthday. I had suspected he was planning to propose, but he still managed to surprise me, going out of his way to make it my dream proposal. That night, he told me we would start wedding preparations immediately, and just like that, our families and friends rallied around us, making sure everything was perfect for our big day.
Everything was going smoothly until the night I answered his phone.
Chuks was in the bathroom, and a number saved as ‘Vivian Client’ kept calling. I tried calling him, but he didn’t hear me over the sound of running water. So, I picked up the phone, intending to tell the caller that he would call back. But the voice I heard on the other end made my blood run cold.
“Daddy?” a small child’s voice said.
I froze, staring at the screen like it might explain what I had just heard. The voice came again, “Daddy, are you there?”
Then I heard a soft but clear woman’s voice: “Sammy, I told you Daddy is busy. He will call us when he’s done with work.”
I stood there, the phone still pressed to my ear, as they ended the call. My entire body went numb as the truth unravelled in my mind: Chuks had a whole family — a wife and a child.
I wanted to confront him that night, to scream, cry, and demand answers. But something held me back. How could I destroy everything just two weeks before our wedding? Our families were so excited, and everything we needed was already in place. I couldn’t imagine the humiliation and heartbreak if the truth came out.
That night, I cried until my body ached, vowing to leave him. But when morning came, I woke up with a strange peace. I had a dream.
My dreams have always been my guide, my lifeline when I was lost. Every major decision I’ve ever made was influenced by what I saw in my sleep. It was as though the universe spoke to me through those visions, giving me answers when I needed them most. My dream revealed the right hospital to take her to when my mother fell sick. When I got my job, I dreamt of myself sitting on that desk I now sit on a month before the interview. So, when I dreamt that I should stay with Chuks, despite everything, it shook me to my core. The dream wasn’t detailed, but the message was clear. And even though my heart was shattered, I couldn’t ignore what I had seen.
But what I couldn’t understand, what still tears me apart, is why the universe would want me to hold on to someone who had lied, cheated, and shattered my heart.

It’simpressive how Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson refused to be typecast after co-starring in the Twilight franchise, which has grossed more than $3.3 billion. Each has taken on interesting and challenging roles, and each has carved out quite a career. Stewart has alternated between big-budget vehicles and indie projects, while Pattinson has proved to be a formidable Batman and has held his own in prestige projects such as The Lighthouse and Tenet.
Writer-director-producer Bong Joon
Ho’s utterly bonkers and wildly creative though somewhat repetitive Mickey 17 is his first film since the Oscar-winning Parasite in 2019, and Pattinson gives a knockout performance in an actioncomedy dual role that might once have been played by a Robin Williams or a Jim Carrey or an Eddie Murphy.
Sledgehammer-unsubtle and bursting with big ideas about class warfare, immigration and the pitfalls of blindly following a narcissistic leader (ahem), Mickey 17 is the latest entry in the “Main Character Keeps Dying” genre, as seen in films such as Groundhog Day, Edge of Tomorrow and Happy Death Day, and TV series such as Russian Doll.
Pattinson strikes comedic gold by affecting a risky but effective accent as the hapless but goodhearted Mickey Barnes, who has signed up to be a human crash test dummy and dies a series of gruesome deaths in the name of scientific research, only to be recycled via a biological 3D printer, with his memories and personality intact — though each version of Mickey seems to carry slightly different traits. It’s a variation on the ship of Theseus as filtered through a liveaction Looney Tunes cartoon, with some B-movie creatures thrown in for good measure.
Mickey 17 is set 30 years in the future, where Mickey and his best friend Timo
(Steven Yeun) are in debt to a ruthless loan shark. Out of options, they decide to literally leave Earth and join a space colony mission to the distant planet of Niflheim led by the failed politician Kenneth Marshall (Mark Ruffalo), who wears gaudy outfits and sports ill-fitting bleached teeth and makes grand proclamations that are gobbled up by his hardcore followers, who wear red baseball caps and will do anything for their leader. (Yes, Marshall is like a cross between Donald Trump and Elon Musk.)
During the four years-plus journey to Niflheim, the passengers and crew wear drab clothes and consume rationed portions of disgusting gruel and are cautioned not to have sex because it will sap them of their energy, while Marshall and his grotesquely materialistic and controlling wife Ylfa (Toni Collette) live in a luxurious apartment and consume lavish meals. Marshall even has his own closedcircuit talk show.
As Mickey is exploited like a human canary in a coal mine — exposing himself to one toxic situation after another so the medical team can create antigens — he finds solace in a passionate relationship with Nasha Barridge (a wonderful Naomi Ackie), a security agent who, like Mickey, isn’t buying into the philosophical manure that Marshall keeps shovelling to his followers on a daily basis. Once the ship finally lands on the frozen planet, the idea of creating a Utopia seems ridiculous. Mickey is sent into the deadly atmosphere and dies another horrific death so that a vaccine can be created. He also has a strange encounter with a herd of crawling, slug-like creatures that are soon dubbed “Creepers” by Marshall, who targets them for extinction.
When the 17th iteration of Mickey suffers a serious injury in the field and is left for dead, the printer cranks out a Mickey 18, who is much tougher and angrier than previous versions and wants revenge on Marshall for turning him into a guinea pig. Things get problematic and truly weird when Mickey 17 comes face-to-face with Mickey 18, meaning he’s becoming a “multiple,” which is strictly forbidden and could lead to both of them being executed. As for Nasha, she’s not freaked out by the two Mickeys; in fact, she thinks it’s kind of fantastic.
As Marshall gears up for a war with the Creepers, who might not be what they appear to be, two of our best actors Mark Ruffalo and Toni Collette, go way, way, way over the top in twin performances that are more loud and flashy than truly effective. Pattinson and Ackie fare much better, with Ackie putting some wickedly funny twists on a badass heroine character, while Pattinson creates two distinctly different personalities in the two Mickeys. With a running time of 2 hours and 17 minutes, Mickey 17 occasionally loses momentum as it hammers home its points, but this is still a uniquely funny and timely tale.

The buzz is back, baby. Showtime’s savage horror drama Yellowjackets premiered in 2021 to acclaim and awe. It is a bold and brutal story of a group of teenage girls stranded in the wilderness and their adult selves 20 years after their trauma. It was daring and addictive, Emmy-nominated, and full of searing performances from beloved actresses, including Melanie Lynskey, Tawny Cypress, and Christina Ricci.
new shelters, domesticated animals and enough to eat that they can even hold feasts.
The show’s second season, which aired in spring 2023, was a bit of a letdown—a meandering sophomore slump that ended with a disappointing finale. So now, 20 months later, fans are hungry—starving, even—not just for more episodes but for the feeling Yellowjackets gave us in its evocative, exhilarating first season.
I am delighted to tell you that the first few episodes of Season 3 have that killer instinct back. The new episodes have happily dispensed with problematic Season 2 storylines and focused on what makes the show work: its cast, its mythology and its ability to disturb us. We want it weird and full of scenery-chewing (or, ahem, meatchewing) monologues, not tortuous and torturous.
Yellowjackets Season 3 picks up in the present only a few weeks after the messy confrontation at Lottie’s (Simone Kessell) cult compound left Natalie (Juliette Lewis) dead after Misty (Ricci’s) accidentally stabbed her with a syringe full of fentanyl (it was complicated). Misty is not doing well with the grief and guilt, but Shauna (Lynskey), Tai (Cypress) and Van (Lauren Ambrose) have managed to compartmentalize and move on.
Things could get back to “normal” if Van wasn’t dying of cancer, Tai hadn’t blown up her marriage and life, and Shauna’s daughter Callie (Sarah Desjardins) hadn’t witnessed Natalie’s death. (Lottie is back to normal, though, in a mental institution.) And there’s someone new stalking Shauna, who may know about what happened in the wilderness.
In the 1990s timeline, we’ve jumped ahead to spring after the dire winter of Season 2 nearly killed everyone. The girls managed to survive after a mysterious fire burned down their cabin, with the help of all the meat they got to eat from poor dead Javi (Luciano Leroux). But in spring, all thoughts of cannibalism are a distant dream (sure, definitely). They’ve got
Natalie (Sophie Thatcher) is still the group’s reluctant leader; she tries to manage tension between Shauna (Sophie Nelisse) and Mari (Alexa Barajas) and keep the secret that Coach Ben (Steven Krueger) is still alive. Things may have been all fun and games (literally) for a few months, but Yellowjackets’ camp is a powder keg of teen hormones, power hunger and religious drama ready to explode.
Like in the first two seasons, the story in the past is the most compelling part of Yellowjackets for the simple reason that the mysteries are so tantalizing to chew over. The new episodes better link the questions of the past to the present, making the whole narrative seem more cohesive than in Season 2.
It also helps that there is so much more happening this year. Season 2 stagnated in part because the story involved a whole lot of doing nothing, as the girls in the past wasted away in the barren winter and the women in the present twiddled their thumbs without confronting each other. In Season 3, the action is tighter and the stakes feel higher. The writers are better at balancing reveals, twists and new questions as the plot unfolds.
Plus, the stuff that’s always worked for Yellowjackets is still there. Lynskey is a magnetic presence, and Ricci is delightfully unhinged. The actresses playing teens have a maturity to their performances that is beyond their years. And, of course, there’s plenty of gruesome gore to go around.
The episodes could still use a pick-meup in some slow spots, especially in the exposition-heavy season premiere. Adult Tai’s storyline is still somewhat lost and needs more connection to what the character was up to in Season 1 (remember the dog?). Still, it’s nice just to get the feeling that Yellowjackets is dangerous and intoxicating again. This isn’t comfort TV; this is an adrenalineseeking thrill.
