ANNUAL REPORT
From the Head of School Dear Members of The Williams School Community, I am pleased to share with you our annual donor report representing the truly outstanding support we received throughout the past fiscal year from July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021. This report is a way of recognizing and thanking everyone for investing in The Williams School at every level. I am truly inspired by the effusive generosity and continuous words of support you gave The Williams School during the ongoing pandemic; a time when we all collectively pulled together for each other and for Williams. As a community, we are truly enriched by the enthusiasm and confidence in our School, as well as the generous giving we receive from all donors, who fall into numerous categories: alumni, alumni parent, grandparent, corporation, foundation, friend, parent, student, and trustee. Through your collective efforts, we were able to meet and far exceed our designated Annual Fund goal of $350,000, while continuing to build on our endowment, which now has reached $14 million! Two events highlighted your outstanding philanthropy: our 8th Annual Pamela Lancaster Pettinari ‘77 / Williams Golf Tournament in September 2020, which had record attendance and netted its highest income ever to support the endowed Pettinari Scholarship Fund, AND our record Day of Giving in May, when so many of you went above and beyond to support Williams. Your generous Annual Fund gifts provide the needed monies to support our gifted, dedicated, and talented faculty and staff and the dedicated delivery of a strong teaching and learning program enriching the lives of our enthusiastic students each day. As many of you have heard in my commencement remarks, two of my favorite words are Thank You, and so I say “Thank You” for choosing to support the Annual Fund, the endowment, the newly dedicated Turf Field and the many spirited school-sponsored events that you attended last year. Your giving inspires, enhances, and strengthens all of us as we continue to live by the School Mission and core values of Scholarship, Character, and Community. As ever, I am most grateful for your support.

CLASS OF 2021 SENIOR PARENT GIFT The Senior Parent Gift is an honored tradition at Williams, and a wonderful way for parents and grandparents to honor the impact that Williams has had on their student, and the legacy they will leave after their graduation. This year, under the leadership of Senior Parent Gift Chairs Bethany Seidel P ’15, ’17, ’21 and Kristen Shea P ‘21, over $100,000 was raised to conduct an extensive renovation of the hallway adjacent to the Daren Performing Arts Center. The renovation provides a bright, comfortable space to display student artwork, and for students to gather in between classes and throughout the day. 319 donors, including 131 alumni, helped us to far surpass our goals for Williams’ 2nd Day of Giving. We had three matching gift challenges this year:

The generosity of spirit throughout the day was truly palpable:

I ncluding the challenge gifts, we raised over $114,000. Gifts ranged from $5.00 to $15,000. We received alumni donations from as early as the Class of 1943, and as recently as the Class of 2020. Gifts were made by every Williams constituency: alumni, current parents, parents of alumni, faculty and staff, current and past grandparents, students, and friends of the School.

to everyone who made our Day of Giving a resounding success. The 2021-22 Day of Giving will be held on Tuesday, May 10, 2022, so we hope to continue the momentum!
ENDOWED GIFTS An endowment is created with an initial gift of at least $25,000 that in turn provides annual income earnings generated by investment of the principal. Distributions are made annually to the programs designated by the donor, while the fund principal remains to provide support in perpetuity. Endowment gifts are professionally invested to provide income for the School’s operating budget, financial aid, and faculty support, in addition to restricted funds created by donors for other purposes. We thank all those who contributed endowment gifts in 2020-21 and welcome additional donations to all existing endowment funds, as well as the creation of new named funds.

NEW ENDOWED FUNDS ESTABLISHED IN 2020-21
The Bulkeley Writing Prize Fund The Bulkeley School Essay Prize was established in 2020–2021 by Bulkeley School alumnus Bruce Lane '49 (whose mother, Frances Antis Lane was a Williams Memorial Institute alumna, class of 1924) with the intention of creating a writing contest for juniors at The Williams School. The focus of the prize is to each year have students research and write an essay about a specific assigned topic regarding the history of the former Bulkeley School for Boys (1873-1951) in New London. Essay topics may touch upon the relationship between Bulkeley and WMI. The prize is funded by Mr. Lane's gift to the endowment and will be awarded to those students earning first and second place for their work. The ultimate goal is for The Williams School to eventually compile the winning essays and related historical material into a bound volume for placement in the New London Public Library, The New London Historical Society, The Williams School, and other appropriate places. The Barbara Nuttall Bates ’47 Endowed Fund for Library Resources Established by Barbara Nuttall Bates ’47 and her extended family in recognition of her 90th birthday, this fund will bring additional resources to Williams, affording the School to purchase a subscription to JSTOR, alongside other updates and upgrades to the Teaching and Learning Hub. JSTOR is a research tool that is primarily used by students at colleges and universities. Barbara is also the very proud grandparent of Jacob Bates ʼ25.
