The Whittier City Council brought in the new year by unanimously selecting the renowned architecture and urban design firm Moule and Polyzoides to revise the Uptown Specific Plan. The Pasadena-based firm has had much success in revitalizing other historic downtowns, notably Pasadena and Santa Monica, and many Whittier residents and business owners are optimistic that the Uptown area will share similar success. Likely changes to the Uptown Specific Plan will include mixed-use residential development along Philadelphia & Greenleaf, cohesive design and development standards, and land use that encourages heightened pedestrian activity for a unique “uptown” experience. The year-long process is slated to begin in February with the public involvement phase to begin this Spring.
