WRITING OUR NEXT CHAPTER

Dear Westview Community,

As we've just celebrated our 100th day of school, I’m filled with pride and excitement as I think about the amazing journey that The Westview School continues to take. In this edition of the Wildcat Chronicle, I’m excited to share stories that celebrate our school, our students, our staff, our families, and the broader Westview community— all of whom make this place so special

This year’s theme, The Westview Story: Writing Our Next Chapter, truly captures the spirit of where we are and where we’re headed. Every day, we contribute to a story of growth, achievement, and possibility. Whether it’s a student reaching a new milestone or our school growing stronger as a community, our collective story is one of hope and transformation

In this edition, we have some truly special highlights. We’ll be celebrating a group of our students who have recently become published authors an inspiring reminder of their hard work and determination. We’ll also be shining a light on some of our alumni who are making a difference in the world doing incredible things - showing what’s possible when you have the support of a community like Westview These stories are a beautiful reflection of the impact of our school and the extraordinary potential of each individual who walks through our doors.

I also want to take a moment to thank the incredible people who make all of this possible. To our passionate staff who pour their hearts into supporting every student, thank you for all that you do. Your dedication and commitment to our students' growth is truly inspiring. To Westview’s Board of Trustees, thank you for your unwavering leadership and vision

And, of course, there’s even more exciting news on the horizon! In the coming year, we will be expanding our school with the addition of Westview High School. This is an exciting new chapter for Westview, and a direct reflection of the growth and success we’ve experienced together. I can’t wait to see how this new opportunity will benefit our students and families, and I look forward to what lies ahead

As we continue to write Westview’s story, I’m more confident than ever in the incredible potential of our students and the strength of our community. Thank you for being an essential part of The Westview School’s story, and I’m so excited to write this next chapter with all of you.

Happy Reading,

Westview's Time to Shine

ACHIEVING COGNIA’S HIGHEST DISTINCTION

The Westview School was named a 2024 Cognia School of Distinction. This prestigious honor recognizes Westview's unwavering commitment to educational excellence, demonstrating a high standard of quality across key areas such as teaching, learning, leadership, and school culture.

The honor was awarded following a rigorous accreditation process conducted by Cognia, a global nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing education worldwide. Cognia’s accreditation engagement reviews serve as a comprehensive measure of a school’s effectiveness, with only a select few institutions earning the distinguished title of "School of Distinction."

This year, out of 1,952 accreditation reviews, only 60 schools and systems achieved this distinction 41 of which were U.S.-based and 8 international. The Westview School is proud to stand among them, recognized for its excellence in providing a quality educational environment for students with autism.

This accolade serves as a shining example of The Westview School's commitment to its theme for the 2023–2024 school year: "Our Time to Shine." Throughout the year, the school community embraced the notion of shining brightly through hard work, resilience, and dedication to continuous improvement.

Cognia’s rigorous review process involved a thorough evaluation of schools against its Performance Standards, which encompass essential components of a quality learning environment. The Westview School’s 2023–2024 accreditation results highlighted evidence of growth in student learning, a healthy and inclusive culture, engaging instructional environments, and effective leadership. These elements are at the core of what Cognia considers crucial for achieving and maintaining high-quality education standards.

Cognia President and CEO, Dr. Mark A. Elgart, expressed his congratulations to the 2024 Schools and Systems of Distinction, praising their ability to meet and exceed performance expectations "These institutions are benchmarks of school quality in their commitment to continuous improvement," Dr. Elgart said. "We commend them for their outstanding efforts in fostering environments where students thrive."

THEPATHTOACCREDITATION

Achieving Cognia accreditation, and maintaining it, is no small feat. The Westview School participated in a detailed evaluation process that included self-assessment, a review conducted by trained external evaluators, and an improvement phase. This feedback-driven process leads to continuous refinement and development, ensuring that the institution provides the best possible education for its students

Westview’s dedication to excellence is reflected not only in the feedback from Cognia’s external reviewers but also in the school's ongoing mission to provide a structured, supportive environment tailored to meet the specific needs of each student. By engaging in a continuous improvement process, The Westview School ensures that its programs evolve with the latest research and best practices in teaching, learning, and leadership.

BUILDINGACULTUREOF GROWTHANDSUPPORT

At the heart of The Westview School's success is our focus on creating a nurturing culture where students are empowered to succeed. Specializing in serving children with autism, we integrate academic learning with social skills development, therapies, and personalized support. Teachers, therapists, and staff work collaboratively to create an environment where each student can excel both academically and socially.

Westview’s program emphasizes individualized instruction, allowing students to progress at their own pace in a safe and encouraging atmosphere. Our commitment to building students’ confidence, independence, and social skills plays a pivotal role in ensuring their success not only during their time at the school but also as they transition to future opportunities.

THEROADAHEAD

As a Cognia School of Distinction, The Westview School will carry this prestigious title for one year, but our commitment to continuous growth and improvement is unwavering. We will continue to utilize the results of our recent Cognia review to inform future improvements and further elevate the learning experiences of our students.

This recognition aligned perfectly with the theme of the 2023–2024 school year "Our Time to Shine." As the school continues to shine brightly as a leader i it remains dedicated to hel reach their full potential, li future success

ASPECIALPRESENTATION

The Westview School's distinction was formally celebrated during an all-school assembly, where Mary Brinkman, Director of the Mountain Region for Cognia, attended in person to present the award. The students, staff, and leadership of the school were gathered for this special occasion, and Brinkman’s presence underscored the significance of the honor She spoke to the school community about the importance of the achievement and praised The Westview School for its dedication to fostering an exceptional educational experience for its students. The assembly was a moment of shared pride for everyone involved and a fitting tribute to the year’s theme "Our Time to Shine." It was a moment where the hard work and dedication of the entire school community truly shone through.

Remembering Jane Stewart

CONTINUINGTHEWESTVIEWSTORY

In October, The Westview School celebrated Founder's Day, honoring the legacy of our founder, Jane Stewart. Dressed in Westview blue, students and staff filled the campus with school spirit and pride.

The day began with a special morning assembly featuring a retelling of The Westview School history from our Upper School students. They highlighted Mrs. Jane's vision and Westview's journey from its modest beginnings in 1981 to the growing community it is today. It is always a joy to watch our students showcase their public speaking skills and a reminder of how Westview continues teaching the values Mrs. Jane held dear.

This year, with the exciting launch of Westview High School on the horizon, we announced plans for a commemorative time capsule to be buried near Jane's Story Spot. It will hold mementos reflecting today's Westview and will be opened in 2040 the high school graduation year of our current Early Childhood class

The celebration concluded with an all-school photo, capturing this moment of unity and joy. It was a day to honor Westview's history, celebrate the present, and look forward to the bright future. Westview is such a special little school, and we are all thankful to the visionary woman who made it all possible!

Join us at The Westview School this Spring for Westview EDU, our education series for parents and caregivers of children on the autism spectrum. We have an excellent and informative lineup of sessions from both Westview staff and community experts with the knowledge to share. Each presenter will be in-person in Largent Hall on Thursdays at 9:15 AM. Presentations will last for one hour. ZOOM option will be offered. Visit us online for registration details.

INTRODUCING WESTVIEW HIGH SCHOOL

Building the Future

PROGRESSINACTION

Westview is buzzing with excitement as we prepare for the official opening of Westview High School in Fall 2025. The sights and sounds of construction on our new high school building can be heard and seen as we progress toward the highly anticipated opening!

We are thrilled to share the story of how this groundbreaking initiative came to life and what it means for our students and community Let's examine the journey to establish Westview High School, the innovative program structure, and the opportunities awaiting future students.

THEJOURNEYTOHIGHSCHOOL

An extension of The Westview School to include a high school education has been a repeat request and topic of discussion among stakeholders for many years In 2016, with enthusiastic support from parents, Westview's Board of Trustees first initiated a strategic plan to explore the possibility of expansion. However, at the time, the financial feasibility and sustainability were unclear. It wasn't until a second strategic plan was completed in 2021 by Gershenson and Associates, followed by a comprehensive feasibility study by The Education Group, that the vision of a Westview High School started to take shape.

BECKY TRAVIS

The feasibility study examined six years of data, including staff, student, and family surveys and interviews, alumni matriculation data, and the development of a pro forma budget. The results showed a clear need for a high school program serving students with autism and confirmed that the project was financially viable for Westview With this green light, Westview's board unanimously voted to move forward to design a high school program tailored to Westview's mission and the unique needs of its students.

CRAFTINGAUNIQUEPROGRAM

A program committee was formed and tasked with answering two key questions: “What should our signature program be?” and “Who should this high school serve?” The committee conducted extensive research and interviews with heads of schools and admissions directors from schools nationwide serving students with autism.

The results of this research showed one significant takeaway most of these schools did not have a singular signature program of study. It was also very clear that flexibility and partnerships were important to the success of the program and student outcomes. The plan is for Westview High School to leverage partnerships with local community colleges and organizations to provide students with various opportunities aligned with their interests and aptitudes.

Ms. Rachel's Story

FROM SUMMER VOLUNTEER TO KINDERGARTEN TEACHER

Rachel Patronella joined the staff of The Westview School as a Kindergarten teacher in August 2023. However, her connection with Westview began many years earlier as a summer volunteer and her experiences during Westview Summer Camp ultimately guided her career path. Now a dedicated teacher at Westview, Rachel reflects on how her experiences as a volunteer shaped her future as a teacher.

Rachel started volunteering at Westview after eighth grade. She was looking for summer opportunities to fulfill her hours through a volunteer organization. “I always knew I wanted to work with kids, but I wasn’t sure how,” she explained “Volunteering at Westview gave me the hands-on experience I needed to figure that out.”

For four summers, Rachel worked closely with students, helping them with their work and celebrating their progress. “I loved seeing how proud they were when they accomplished something,” she said Field trips were another highlight “I remember going to James Coney Island with the kids it was such a fun way to connect with them outside the classroom.”

While Rachel always wanted to work with children, she had considered other careers, such as becoming a dance instructor. Her time at Westview solidified her desire to work with children. “One of the teachers told me, ‘You have a gift You’re amazing at this, and you need to go into this profession.’ That encouragement stuck with me,” Rachel said.

The experience also taught her what it takes to work with children with autism “I realized I had the patience and determination for this work Coming from a public and Catholic school background, I had never been in an environment like this. It showed me I was meant to do this.”

As a teacher, Rachel finds joy in seeing her students succeed. “I love giving them the tools to help them thrive,” she said. “Hearing stories from parents about their progress, like using words to express feelings or interacting more with family, makes it all worth it.”

Rachel encourages aspiring teachers and volunteers to embrace growth through challenges. “It’s okay to make mistakes they’re lessons to grow from,” she said. “I used to struggle with that, but now I see mistakes as proof I’m learning. I even have a sign in my classroom that says, ‘Mistakes are proof I’m always growing.’”

Rachel’s story shows the power of volunteering to not only make a difference but also inspire a lifelong calling.

CELEBRATING OUR PUBLISHED AUTHORS

UPPERELEMENTARYDREAMSBIG

Upper Elementary students assembled a collection of writing and artwork inspired by this year’s school theme, Writing Our Next Chapter. Guided by Mr. Choo, students explored the question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” With thoughtful responses and creative expression, students brought their dreams to life, envisioning futures as chefs, meteorologists, and beyond.

Students considered key questions like what their day would look like, where they would work, and even how they’d commute. Each student drafted and revised their work with care, incorporating feedback from teachers before submitting polished versions for publication This collection is a testament to their hard work, creativity, and the power of dreaming big!

MIDDLESCHOOLPOETIC EXPRESSIONS

Middle School students are turning their creativity into a published poetry book, which will be proudly showcased to parents during Westview’s Spring Celebration of Learning.

In Ms. Gaylor’s English Language Arts class, students explored the art of poetry by reading and annotating a variety of poetic styles. The assignment started with each student writing a haiku and then choosing two additional styles to craft their own original pieces.

Students took teacher feedback and constructive criticism from peers to refine their work, resulting in final pieces. These will be compiled into a beautifully assembled Middle School poetry book the result a representation of their hard work, creativity, and growth as young writers.

CLOUDYPAWSBYMIMILE

Have you heard that Mrs. Mimi Le is a published author? Her children’s book, Cloudy Paws, tells the heartwarming story of a baby bunny, a cloudy kitten, and a tiny frog as they discover the power of friendship, teamwork, and happiness. After the launch of her first children’s book this fall, Mimi, a licensed psychotherapist at The Stewart Center, visited classrooms and shared her story with Westview students. Mrs. Mimi is a much-loved member of our Westview community, and we couldn’t be prouder of her for sharing her talents and passion for storytelling with our community. Cloudy Paws is a must-have for every child’s library don’t miss out on this special book!

Finding Strength Together

THEEFFECTIVENESSANDBENEFITS OFPARENTSUPPORTGROUPS

The day-to-day challenges of living with a neurodiverse child may lead to tremendous amounts of isolation and pressure that not many other parents understand. Some parents have been buried under this pressure for so long that we need to be reminded that support groups can be a powerful source of help for families and enable our parents to learn and build hope for the future. I am happy to start by saying that there is a significant list of benefits when it comes to parent support groups I will be focusing on my top four benefits, which are a sense of community, building confidence, emotional support, and improved mental health.

BUILDINGASENSEOFCOMMUNITY

A sense of community involves many bonding factors since you will be surrounded by other parents of neurodiverse children who understand your journey. Either these parents will be currently sharing your experiences, or you will be able to get a glimpse of what the future holds

This is also an opportunity to build a support network that can result in enduring lifelong friendships and connections that extend beyond the meetings. These relationships can positively impact the entire family, providing valuable experiences for both parents and children. Support groups enable parents to share information with one another, such as information about therapies or new programs, stories, and experiences which will broaden their access to resources.

GAININGCONFIDENCE ANDRESILIENCE

Building self-confidence in parents can lead to greater resilience which then improves parentchild interactions. Therefore, active participation in support groups can lead to acquiring more profound comprehension of one’s own thoughts and emotions, as well as those of other individuals. This heightened self-awareness can contribute to increased confidence and improved parenting skills since you are sharing and learning in a supportive environment without fear of judgment.

Refined parent skills lead to more positive child behaviors. The impact can be extraordinary, extending from the home to the classroom. Parents often witness the development of improved communication and cooperation overall.

FINDINGEMOTIONALSUPPORT ANDVALIDATION

Emotional support is a key component in our groups. First and foremost, parents feel less isolated and more understood. This fosters a sense of belonging and validation, which is essential for parents who are feeling overwhelmed or unsure of their parenting abilities. The opportunity to engage in conversations with other parents who share similar experiences enables parents to receive assurance and understanding. This may be the only environment where parents can openly share their challenges, shame, or embarrassment and receive empathy and encouragement from their peers. Parents may also receive practical advice that can leave a positive lasting impact.

IMPROVINGMENTALHEALTH THROUGHSELF-CARE

Parent support groups can be seen as a form of self-care that improves your mental health. We can simply start by pointing out that this is a moment in time that you have intentionally carved out so that you can focus on yourself, which in turn will be beneficial for your whole family. There is a direct relationship between negative psychological health symptoms and physical health symptoms. This is also a reminder that your children will mirror your levels of stress, and you will model for them how to handle stressors. Therefore, by attending these groups and actively participating in discussions and activities, parents can effectively reduce stress and anxiety, leading to improved overall wellbeing for themselves and their families.

I have witnessed the power of these support groups because of the power within each of our parents. It is a reminder that we are not alone, and it is a place to find hope and humor among supportive individuals who understand. We hope that you can take advantage of a support group and extend your community.

The Stewart Center

PARENT SESSIONS

The Stewart Center is offering Parent Group Sessions open to current and former Westview families. These sessions will be held monthly on the following Thursdays at 9:15AM. The group is to support both parents and guardians of children with special needs Led by Mimi Le, Clinical Director of The Stewart Center this is a process group to learn, share, and evolve to support our children and each other better.

THEMAGICOFTHEWINTERPROGRAM

Each year, the Westview Winter Program is a highlight of the season. But what our families see on performance day is just the final step in a process filled with teamwork, creativity, and dedication.

The magic starts with Nelson Armstrong, Westview’s music teacher, and Kaylee Bond, art teacher. Together, they pour weeks of planning, practice, and heart into making sure every student feels confident on stage. Nelson carefully chooses songs and designs choreography that allows our students to shine. At the same time, Kaylee offers support with her signature creativity and takes ownership of transforming the space with beautiful sets and costumes that bring the performance to life.

The prep for the Winter Program is more than just learning lyrics and dance moves it’s about building confidence From the first rehearsals to the final runthrough, students practice, problem-solve, and cheer each other on Teachers and instructional assistants offer patience and encouragement, adjusting schedules to fit in extra practice and helping students feel comfortable in the spotlight.

Thebeautyofthisshowisseeing thejourneyofstudents.Aparent describedittomeas‘amoment toreflectonwhereyourchild startedandjusthowfarthey’ve come.’TheWinterProgramistruly somethingspecial.

When the big day arrives, Westview students take the stage and share something truly special. The Winter Program is a celebration of not only the final performance but all the small wins and steps that get our students there. It is a great moment that is the culmination of dedication, creativity, and the support of an entire school cheering them on

The Westview Winter Program is more than just a tradition. It’s a reminder of what makes our school so unique a place where every child is encouraged to shine.

Wonderful Westview

ALUMNINEWS

An education at The Westview School makes a lasting impact on many of its students, and we are always delighted to hear about the success of our former Wildcats who are all grown up and doing wonderful things!

Now, Quint is thriving in the workforce! He works at Rocambolesc, a unique gelato, sandwich, and coffee shop the only one of its kind in the United States! Even more special, Rocambolesc is committed to inclusivity, hiring adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Quint loves his job, where he spends his days serving gelato and crafting specialty coffees, teas, and smoothies.

“I eat a lot of gelato,” Quint admits with a smile “And my friends and teachers come to see me. My boss and coworkers are really cool.” He even encourages the Westview community to stop by and say hello!

Quint credits Westview for giving him confidence when he needed it most. “Westview gave me a voice when I didn’t have one,” he shared “It taught me that I can do anything I put my mind to.”

His advice for current Westview students? “Never give up and study hard.”

From 2007 to 2017, Eli was a student at Westview, where he built lasting friendships and fond memories After graduating, he attended Gateway Academy for high school and is now a junior at the University of Iowa in the REACH program. He shares an apartment with a roommate and loves the independence of college life.

At Westview, Eli’s favorite subject was math, and he especially enjoyed the Holiday Play, lock-ins, and Middle School socials. Now, he is focused on life skills and vocational training, gaining hands-on experience by working at an assisted living center, where he serves meals to residents.

Quint spent five years as a Westview student, during his Upper School years - 2014 to 2019. Before Westview, he attended The Parish School, and after graduating, he continued his education at The HUB School.

When reflecting on his time at Westview, Quint’s favorite memories include making new friends, hanging out with them, and special events like Camp For All and campus sleepovers. Those experiences helped shape his confidence and sense of community something he carries with him today

We love hearing how Quint is thriving as a young adult! What a great story of the power of perseverance, community, and a strong foundation built at Westview.

Reflecting on his time at Westview, Eli remembers the kindness and support he received “It was a good school,” he said. Most importantly, he credits Westview with teaching him how to make and keep friends something he believes is essential for lifelong success.

Now a thriving high school sophomore, Carter has fully embraced student life at Stratford. Theatre is one of his favorite classes, and he’s having a blast exploring new interests especially in his cooking class.
