Director’s Welcome Dear Friends, As the United States turns 250, The Westmoreland Museum of American Art will celebrate this historic milestone through a year of exhibitions and programs that explore the American landscape—its beauty and power to connect us.

Outside the Museum, a Liberty Bell replica from the statewide Bells Across PA initiative celebrates the landmarks of Westmoreland County and connects our community to the broader story of American independence. Inside, Steel Valley Visions: An American Legacy pays tribute to Southwestern Pennsylvania’s steel industry—the innovation and labor that built a region and a nation. Opening January 21, a new immersive experience of the same title will transport visitors into the sights and sounds of the mills that once defined our landscape.

Additional exhibitions highlighting diverse perspectives on the American landscape include the vibrant Florida scenes of the Highwaymen painters (January 25–May 17, 2026), Jordan Ann Craig’s Southwest-inspired abstractions (January 25, 2026– January 10, 2027), Clementine Hunter’s portraits of Black life in Louisiana (opening June 12, 2026), and Ansel Adams's iconic vistas that became emblems of our shared heritage. (September 13, 2026–January 10, 2027).

The highlight of the year will be a community birthday celebration on July 11, when we invite everyone to join us in honoring 250 years of American art.

the extraordinary hand-painted baseballs of this Pittsburgh-born artist, who transformed these small leather surfaces into intricate works of storytelling.

Then, beginning June 5, our art-inspired mini golf course will bring art and play together in an interactive installation inspired by works on view.

Following record attendance in 2025, we’re excited to welcome back a visitor favorite. Art in Bloom returns for its third year on March 25–29, pairing regional floral designers with works from our collection to create breathtaking creations throughout the galleries. Building on the success of Art in Bloom, we’re also introducing a brand-new experience in partnership with the Pittsburgh Glass Center. Taking place October 14–19, this event will feature glass artworks inspired by the Museum’s collection, along with live demonstrations, hands-on workshops, and artist talks.

JANUARY 25–MAY 17, 2026 Get ready to be transported to sun-drenched Florida, where art, entrepreneurship, and determination collided in one of the most interesting chapters of American art. Florida Highwaymen Painters features 26 self-taught Black artists who overcame systemic barriers

to paint and sell Florida landscapes from the 1950s through the 1980s. Their story bridges art history and social history, revealing how creative practice can become both an act of resistance and a pathway to self-determination. thewestmoreland.org / 1

Working in the racially segregated communities of Fort Pierce and Gifford along Florida’s Atlantic coast, these artists forged new opportunities amid the restrictions of the Jim Crow South. During this period, Black Floridians faced widespread exclusion from public institutions, galleries, and art schools. Many lived in neighborhoods denied basic infrastructure, and jobs were largely limited to agricultural or domestic labor. Yet within this system of inequality, the Highwaymen transformed creativity into economic independence.

Encouraged by painter and mentor A. E. “Beanie” Backus, early members such as Alfred Hair and Harold Newton began producing luminous, expressive scenes of Florida’s wetlands, palm-lined coasts, and radiant sunsets. The Highwaymen painted quickly and prolifically, often completing a dozen canvases

a day. Using affordable materials, such as Masonite boards, inexpensive paints, and handbuilt frames, they created vivid works alive with color and motion. Denied access to traditional galleries, they built an entrepreneurial network, selling their still-wet paintings door-to-door, in offices and hotels, and along Florida’s newly built highways for about $25 each. Their art became a thriving business that captured the imagination of tourists, new homeowners, and locals during Florida’s postwar population and tourism booms.

The Highwaymen’s instantly recognizable style—defined by saturated hues, sweeping brushwork, and dramatic skies—was shaped as much by economic necessity as by artistic vision. Paintings had to command attention at a glance, yet within this shared visual language, each artist developed an unmistakable voice: Hair’s bold, high-energy compositions; Newton’s

refined technique and mastery of light; and Mary Ann Carroll, the sole woman in the group, whose lyrical sensibility set her apart.

Through their work, visitors are transported to a mid-century Florida of shimmering lagoons, royal poincianas trees, and sunlit marshes—a landscape both enchanting and endangered.

Much of the natural environment they painted has since been lost to urban development, giving their paintings enduring value as both cultural memory and ecological record.

The term “Highwaymen” itself was coined in the early 1990s, by historian Jim Fitch, who rediscovered their paintings in flea markets and antique shops. Though some artists rejected the label for its connotations of criminality and its false sense of a unified movement, it brought long-overdue recognition to their achievement.

In 2004, all 26 artists were inducted into the

Florida Artists Hall of Fame, affirming their place in the broader American art story.

Curated by Gordon Wilkins of the Addison Gallery of American Art, which first presented an expanded version of this exhibition, Florida Highwaymen Painters tells a story of resilience, entrepreneurship, and artistic vision. Their art reflects both the hardships of segregation and the triumph of imagination over exclusion, inviting us to celebrate not only their shared legacy but also their individual talents.

PLAY BALL! THE ART OF GEORGE SOSNAK April 23, 2026–April 4, 2027 Step up to the plate for one of the most unique exhibitions ever to hit The Westmoreland. Play Ball! The Art of George Sosnak will be a home run for fans of art, baseball, and Americana— an unforgettable celebration of creativity, storytelling, and passion.

Born in Pittsburgh in 1924, Sosnak was a minor league umpire, baker, and corrections officer who became a self-taught artist with an obsession for the game. Using India ink, a magnifying glass, and endless patience, he transformed baseballs into intricate visual stories filled with portraits, stats, highlights, and even autographs. Sosnak’s work aligns with American folk and self-taught art traditions, where everyday materials and personal devotion become vehicles for storytelling and cultural 4 / February–May | 2026

memory. Of the nearly 3,000 baseballs he began, he completed approximately 800.

This exhibition brings together over 50 of Sosnak’s remarkable works—including several dedicated to the Pittsburgh Pirates—with letters from players and organizations. Play Ball! is both a love letter to America’s pastime and a joyful reminder of how art can capture the spirit of a game.

it takes a long time to stay here: Paintings by Jordan Ann Craig January 25, 2026–January 10, 2027 Jordan Ann Craig, a member of the Northern Cheyenne Nation, creates bold, geometric abstract paintings that reflect both Indigenous traditions and her own experiences living in the American Southwest. This exhibition builds on a major presentation originally organized by The Block Museum of Art at Northwestern University in Illinois, which marked the artist’s largest institutional exhibition to date.

Craig's work begins with research—studying historical examples of beadwork, pottery, and textiles from Indigenous communities, especially her Northern Cheyenne heritage. From these patterns and materials, she develops large-scale compositions built from repeating lines, shapes, and colors. The results are paintings that feel both precise and personal, structured, yet full of emotion.

Through her art, Craig invites us to reflect on where we come from and how we stay connected—to culture, to land, and to one another. Her work reminds us that slowing down and paying attention can be powerful ways to see and to belong.

The landscape around Craig’s home in New Mexico is another major influence. The open skies, desert colors, and quiet expanses of the region inform her palette and sense of rhythm.

Her paintings capture the balance between order and natural variation, between control and imperfection. Even small details, like the raw edges of her canvases, remind viewers that her work is both carefully made and deeply connected to life and place.

The exhibition’s title, it takes a long time to stay here, comes from a poem by Northern Cheyenne writer m.s. RedCherries. It speaks to the idea of slowing down, taking root, and finding meaning through patience and attention.

The paintings featured in the exhibition invite viewers to look closely and linger. As one spends time with each work, subtle shifts in color, pattern, and feeling begin to appear.

May A Closer Look

Pop-Up Exhibition

Gavin Benjamin On view May 21–27 and May 30–31* Experience the bold vision of artist Gavin Benjamin in this special pop-up exhibition featuring works from his acclaimed series Heads of State and Night Fever.

A multidisciplinary artist, Benjamin merges photography, painting, and design to explore questions of identity, race, luxury, and belonging. Drawing inspiration from art history, fashion, and pop culture, his richly layered portraits challenge how beauty and power are portrayed in contemporary society.

Enjoy a festive evening inspired by the art of Gavin Benjamin. Begin with a lively reception featuring hors d’oeuvres stations before gathering in the Cantilever Gallery for an unforgettable dining experience surrounded by Benjamin’s striking works.

The evening’s décor, menu by The Common Plea, spirits, and entertainment are all inspired by Benjamin’s style and creative vision. THE WESTMORELAND SOCIETY 38TH ANNUAL MEETING On November 1, 2025, Westmoreland Society members gathered for the 38th Annual Meeting and Reception. We had a wonderful turnout and an inspiring evening celebrating art, community, and the impact of your generosity.

This year’s Champion of the Arts Award honored Paul and Carol Evanson for their incredible contributions to the Museum over the years. For voting consideration, Nicole Lampl, Curator of American Art, presented three works by Persian American artist Maryam Safajoo. Members voted to accession A Shadow on the Border of Time, 2025.

Additionally, donations totaling $13,775 were raised for the Museum's Acquisition Fund, with an additional $5,000 for Museum Operations. These contributions make it possible to continue expanding The Westmoreland’s collection with exceptional works of art that reflect and enrich our shared heritage.

Shining a Light on the People Who Make The Westmoreland

Abigail Kroh, a native of Latrobe, holds a BA in Archaeology and Anthropology from Dickinson College and an MA in Anthropology of Development from SOAS University of London. She has worked with organizations such as Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, and Americorps. While living abroad, she worked in community development and became a certified yoga instructor. After returning to Latrobe post-pandemic, Abigail joined the local arts scene. She serves on the board of the Latrobe Art Center, teaches children’s yoga, and enjoys working in her home ceramic studio.

Michael Kakos, originally from the Bronx, earned a BS in Chemistry from Manhattan College in NYC and MS degrees from Niagara University and Stevens Institute of Technology.

He began his career in plastics resins research before transitioning to roles in sales, product management, and international marketing. He later founded Resin Express Ltd. in London, which distributed engineering thermoplastic raw materials from major European producers. After retiring to Winter Park, Florida, he and his wife, Aimee, split their time between there, London, and Latrobe. A dedicated supporter of the arts and community causes, he serves on numerous nonprofit boards.

Chris Fleischner grew up in Pittsburgh and completed his undergraduate degree at Stanford University. He later earned an MBA from UCLA Anderson School of Management.

Chris worked in several education-related start-ups in California early in his career before joining CalWest Educators Placement in 2003 where he later became coowner and president. He is active philanthropically, supporting a number of local and regional organizations, and enjoys encouraging people to deepen their involvement in whatever causes they care about. He previously served as an advisory board member of the Carnegie Museum of Art and a board member of St. Edmund’s Academy.

Remembering Dwi Bartlebaugh The Westmoreland family is saddened by the recent passing of our friend and colleague, Dwi Bartlebaugh. In her role as the Museum Shop Manager since 2019, Dwi fostered strong relationships with dozens of talented regional artisans and curated an exquisite selection of handcrafted items. Her creative vision made the Shop a beautiful place to explore, and her dedicated work on Summer Artisan Market and Holiday Mart were key to those events' success.

We will miss Dwi's keen sense of style and, most of all, her warmth and kindness.
