Council rookies reach 100 The new Moreton Bay Regional Council was elected by the adult residents of the area back in March. In April the Mayor, Allan Sutherland, and his 12 councillors, including five new faces replacing longserving five retirees, swore an oath to serve their community.

With almost half of the 12 councillors being new to their role, namely Brooke Savige (Division 1), Adam Hain (Division 3), Denise Sims (Division 7), Matt Constance (Division 10) and Darren Grimwade (Division 11), it could be expected that they would take a little while to find their feet in local government.

However, Cr Grimwade has previous political experience, serving as a Queensland MP for a single three-year term ending in 2015, while Cr Constance previously worked alongside former Liberal National Party State Member for Ferny Grove, Dale Shuttleworth, and covered much of the same area contained within Moreton Bay Division 10.

New councillors hit one hundred

T

he men who replaced councillors with 56 years of experience in local government have reached a milestone.

Matt Constance (Division 10) and Darren Grimwade (Division 11) last week brought up 100 days since being sworn in to Moreton Bay Regional Council in April.

Cr Constance replaced 40-year council veteran Brian Battersby, an “institution in his own right”, as the councillor for Bunya, Draper and the Hills District.

“I wear a size nine shoe and have always joked that Brian Battersby left behind size 900s to fill,” Cr Constance said.

“I have worked in many aspects of public life and service prior to this role and I draw on that experience, and like with any new job, the advice and experience of fellow colleagues to achieve better outcomes for our community.

“I have been out engaging with the community and my colleagues have shown faith in my skill and ability by rewarding with a number of committee roles in council.”

Taking over from retired Division 11 councillor Bob Millar in April, Cr Grimwade

has “continued a number of great local projects” and will embark on new projects “to help enhance our local community”.

“It has been a privilege to be out in the community every day meeting with local sporting groups, community groups and dropping into local schools to see how we can work together to improve local facilities,” Cr Grimwade said.

Cr Grimwade, who served as the State Member for Morayfield from 2012 to 2015, is enjoying working in “the level of government closest to the people” of places like Samford, Dayboro and Mt Nebo.

“The ability for local residents to contact me directly is a refreshing change to the State Government process of contact through your local MP’s office.”

Cr Grimwade is “committed to seeing a number of key local projects delivered right across Division 11” during his four-year term, including major road upgrades and sporting and park enhancements.

Cr Constance said he would support improvements to local services such as libraries, pools, S.E.S. and the Bunya tip.

Brooke Savige (Division 1), Adam Hain (Division 3) and Denise Sims (Division 7) are also first-term Moreton Bay councillors.

Railway fans make tracks for big show Murray Paas, Dayboro Murray is the sound engineer at iconic Brisbane live music venue The Zoo and the owner of the Butter Factory in Dayboro, featuring nine businesses including a café, lolly, gluten free food and antiques shops, and a western saloon-themed barbershop.

The best things about working at The Zoo… The moments when not only do you get to see a band that you’ve grown up listening to... but to be able to go beyond your job to make the show all that it can be, and for your work to be appreciated by them.

My favourite performances at The Zoo… I’d have to put Regurgitator and Data Rock up there on the list of bands that consistently put on an amazing and energetic show.

Acts I would have play at my dream gig… Jonathan Richman, Black Mountain, Tom Petty, Roxy Music, Fleetwood Mac, Huey Lewis, The Stems.

The best thing about Dayboro… is the sense of community. I feel privileged to have been introduced to so many locals early on by our long-term tenants.

It was important to revive Dayboro’s historic Butter Factory… Dayboro is an amazing and beautiful historic town.

Despite all the work that the previous owner had put into making sure the Butter Factory would live on, we could see so much potential for the building to add to the charm of the town.

If a movie were made about me I’d be played by… Crispin Glover. Based on his portrayal of George McFly in Back to the Future, I think he could do justice to my often awkward social interactions.

In ten years’ time I hope to be… at the Butter Factory. I have a lifetime of problems to solve here, which I think is what I do best. The potential and possibilities seem endless. It seems like a perfect mix of difficulties, inspiration, education, and reward.

After being closed for maintenance, The Zoo, at 711 Ann Street, Fortitude Valley, re-opens 5 August. The Butter Factory is at 38 Williams Street, Dayboro. Read about its newest shop, Entangle Living Art, on page 11.

H

undreds of railway model enthusiasts from around Queensland will be making tracks for Strathpine this weekend.

The Brendale-based Railway Modellers’ Club of Queensland (RMCQ) will host its annual show, the Pine Rivers Model Train and Hobby Exhibition, over two days at the Strathpine Community Centre.

Around 25 exhibitors will showcase model train displays based on railways in Queensland, New South Wales, Tasmania, the United Kingdom and the United States of America, as well as radio-controlled boats and submarines.

“Lots of kids go through a period where Thomas the Tank Engine is popular, so there will be a lot of kids there, plus the adults,” RMCQ Secretary Quentin Nosovich said.

The exhibition will also feature gamers who will be re-enacting Europe’s famous seven-year war of 1756–1763.

Vendors will be on hand selling every-

thing from model trains and cars and building materials and accessories, to new and out-of-print railway books and trainrelated DVDs, CDs and computer games.

RMCQ, which was established in 1974 and has been based at Brendale since 2001, has 90 members dedicated to promoting interest in railways and railway modelling.

Mr Nosovich joined the club in 1980, drifted away from the hobby and last year re-joined RMCQ, which meets monthly at its Buckley Park headquarters.

“Often if you start with a train set you get sick of running it around in a circle, so you look to do more,” the Cashmere local said.

“You might decide to buy more track or start a layout or you might have a particular interest in say, building scenery or making models.

“If you join a club you meet like-minded people and get advice.

“Some (members) are train drivers who like their job and that often translates to a hobby interest.”

Mr Nosovich said model train technology had advanced so far that scale trains, and track functions such as railway lights and boom gates, could now be operated by smart phones.

The Pine Rivers Model Train and Hobby Exhibition is at the Strathpine Community Centre, 199 Gympie Road, Strathpine on 6-7 August from 9am to 4pm.

Step back in time for charity

H

istory buffs have banded together to help make blood cancer a thing of the past.

Cedar Creek, Dayboro and Albany Creek locals are behind a fundraising event with a difference: a colonial charity ball to be held in one of Queensland’s most historically important heritage buildings.

Fittingly for an event that revives the fashion and dance of colonial Australia, the ball will be held at Old Government House in Brisbane City, which was built in 1862.

Proceeds from next month’s ball will go to the Leukaemia Foundation, to support research and improve survival rates and quality of life for blood cancer sufferers.

“It’s just a wonderful foundation to support because there are so many different things that they do to help patients and to invest in research,” Ange Ferguson from the Leukaemia Foundation’s Albany Creek branch said.

“Old Government House is a beautiful venue and authentic as well, because when Brisbane was first established that’s where the balls used to be held.”

Ms Ferguson said she and Dayboro historian Jeff Hopkins-Weise hatched the idea for the fundraiser after attending a

supper and dance at Pine Rivers Heritage Museum, in commemoration of the 200year anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo.

“After such a fun night of dancing in colonial style and recreating that atmosphere, we thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be great to try this again as a fundraiser’,” she said.

The charity ball will feature colonial dancing, dining, historical re-enactors, heritage displays and raffles for prizes including thousands of dollars’ worth of pearls.

Mr Hopkins-Weise said many people are “fascinated by our earlier history” and “love reliving the past”.

“This unique event aims to provide guests (with) an opportunity to learn about our early colonial history by participating in a ball that captures some of the authentic atmosphere of our early heritage.”

Heather Clarke, host of colonial dances at Samford, will run dance workshops for guests prior to the ball, while fellow Cedar Creek local David de Groot will provide photographic services on the night.

POLICE BEAT Fatal traffic crash, Mt Nebo: A motorist died following a single vehicle traffic crash at Mt Nebo on 23 July. The vehicle was travelling on Mt Nebo Road, just south of the Goat Track, when it left the roadway and crashed down an embankment around 7.45am. The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, a 64-year-old Brisbane man, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Traffic crash, Warner: Emergency services personnel attended the scene of an eight-vehicle crash involving a school bus at Warner on 1 August. Thirteen adults and 13 children were assessed by paramedics after the crash, which occurred near the intersection of Samsonvale and Old North Roads around 8.30am. Two people were transported to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital with minor injuries.

Firearms offences, Brendale: A 25-yearold Strathpine man has appeared in Pine Rivers Magistrates Court after being charged with drug-related offences, while he is assisting police with their inquiries into firearms offences. Shots were fired into two homes at Brendale and Kallangur on 20 July. Around 7.50pm a single shot was fired into a house on Gowrie Street at Brendale, striking an upstairs window.

A man inside the house was not injured.

Around 8.15pm a single shot was fired into a Blazey Street house at Kallangur, damaging a kitchen window. Three people inside the home at the time were not injured. Police believe the shots may have

been fired from a vehicle which sped away from both locations.

Break and enters & theft from motor vehicles, Pine Rivers: Thieves went on a stealing spree at Arana Hills between 18-24 July, stealing a GPS, purse, jacket, number plates, sunglasses and fuel card from eight vehicles parked on driveways and in carports. Items such as firearms, swords, cash, wallet, jewellery, car keys, motorbike, handbag, fishing gear, tablet, two games consoles and games, vacuum cleaner, chainsaw and tools were stolen from nine homes at Eatons Hill, Clear Mountain, Strathpine and Ferny Hills and a Brendale construction site, all broken into during the fortnight that ended 31 July.

New Adopt-a-Cop, Samford: Samford State School has welcomed an additional Adopt-a-Cop, with Detective Senior Constable Chris Smith from the Ferny Grove Criminal Investigation Unit sworn into his new role on 26 July. The newly appointed Adopt-a-Cop is sharing his role with Senior Constable Andrew Kokoschko.

H

e battled adverse weather, injury and solitude and lost 16 per cent of his body weight.

But an Eatons Hill man has achieved what almost 2000 people unsuccessfully try to do each year – hike the entire length of one of the world’s iconic forest trails.

Gordon Forrest completed the Appalachian Trail, a 3500km route passing through 14 states on the USA’s east coast.

The 55-year-old had a six-month window in which to do the hike but completed the trek from Georgia to Maine in four months, walking an average of 22km per day.

“When I summited (at) Katahdin in Maine it was a beautiful day with views forever and I was very thankful for having completed my journey,” Mr Forrest said.

“This trail experience was such a physical exertion and so demanding mentally and physically and emotionally.”

Mr Forrest, who trained for five months to be “trail fit” once he arrived in the USA, lost 14kg during his Appalachian journey.

“I was very concerned about how much weight and body strength I was losing,” he said.

“I was burning at least 6000 calories per day and it was impossible to eat and carry enough good food to replace this, as it would weigh far too much.”

The topography of the Appalachian Trail reaches 2025m above sea level, and some of the mountain areas are treacherous.

“Some bad weather in the mountains had me quite fearful a couple of times as I knew how dangerous being in the mountains when bad weather closed in could be,” Mr Forrest said.

“I did not anticipate some of the weather and especially in the ‘white mountains’, where many people are rescued and where a few actually die every year due to fast changing weather conditions.”

On several other occasions Mr Forrest thought he might not complete the trail, featured in the film A Walk in the Woods.

“I injured my ankle quite severely and I was very concerned this injury would put me off the trail,” Mr Forrest said.

“I was very lonely at times as four months is a long time walking and the sheer exertion and physical effort required each day was very draining.”

ops are helping Ferny Grove State High School students to learn to stay safe when using the internet.

Police officers from Ferny Grove Police Station have been visiting primary and secondary schools in the area to conduct presentations on cyber safety and cyber bullying.

The Head of Junior Secondary at Ferny Grove State High, Hayley Moore, said the school’s Year 7, 8 and 9 students “all have the benefit� of watching a presentation by Queensland Police about cyber safety. “We believe that it is imperative that our students have a basic understanding of these technologies to enable them to keep safe,� Ms Moore said. “It is just as important to educate our

students about ‘chatting’ to people online as it is meeting new people in the real world.�

Announcing this year’s line-up last week, Red Deer Fest’s Bas Pelly said Art vs Science and The Jungle Giants are “exactly the kinds of bands we want closing out our festival: upbeat, energetic, and full of party bangers everyone can sing-along and dance to.”

The line-up also features Melbourne electro prodigy Owen Rabbit, northern New South Wales act Mar Haze, Brisbane nine-piece new wave brass band Bullhorn, Brisbane-based singer/songwriter Charlotte Emily and rockers The Hi-Boys (Sunshine Coast) and Fire and Whistle Theory (Brisbane).

“Red Deer is a great chance for us to showcase the amazingly talented and exciting bands that are out there, and this year I feel like we’ve assembled the best bunch we’ve ever had,” Pelly said.

Red Deer Fest is a “BYO booze and couch” overnight music and camping festival held in a natural amphitheatre on a former deer farm at Foggs Road at Mt Samson.

new Dayboro store is offering an alternative to “dreary, imported and factory-made” goods.

Located in the historic and beautiful Old Butter Factory building, Entangle Living Art is set to inspire with its range of unique bespoke items for the home.

“You can have something functional in your home… that no one else is going to have,” says Nola Atkins, who runs Entangle Living Art with husband David.

“We don’t want it to be just a shop where you buy, we want it to be a special experience.

“The whole philosophy of the store is it needs to be handmade and it needs to be made from natural or recycled or upcycled materials.”

That includes lamps constructed from repurposed metal and indoor vertical gardens made from recycled PET bottles.

Nola and David Atkins opened Entangle Living Art, stocking unique bespoke pieces and indoor plants for the home, in Dayboro last month.

“Indoor plants are obviously really healthy for the environment… but you’ve also got something that looks really cool in your space and adds life and greenery,” Nola said.

Australian versions of kokedama hanging plants, a Japanese art form that is a variant of bonsai, are an Entangle Living Art speciality.

“They’re normally quite small and hanging, because of course the Japanese have very little room in their apartments,” Nola explains.

“We’ve taken it to another level and used paperbark, for a bit of an Aussie

touch and to add a bit of texture.”

The official opening of Entangle Living Art will be held on 6 August from 5pm to 7.30pm, with a chance to ‘meet the makers’ of the store’s unique products.

“There’s amazing artisans around the place that we really wanted to showcase.

That’s what we’re all about: shining a spotlight on those amazing people that are making bespoke, one-off pieces,” Nola said.

You can use any variety of pumpkin you prefer.

500g pumpkin, peeled and cut into 1.5cm cubes 1 tbsp vegetable oil 400g pappardelle pasta 2 garlic cloves, crushed 50g unsalted butter 30g pine nuts Small handful of sage leaves Serves 4

1. Preheat the oven to 200°C. 2. Place the pumpkin pieces in a roasting tray and drizzle with the vegetable oil. Bake for about 25 minutes, turning pieces once halfway through the cooking time.

3. Cook the pappardelle pasta in boiling water for the time directed on the packet, drain and return to saucepan (off the heat).

4. In a small pan, fry the garlic in the butter for 1 minute on medium heat.

5. Add the pine nuts and sage leaves; stir to ensure the sage is coated in butter, then simmer for a further 2 minutes.

6. Put the roasted pumpkin into the saucepan with the pasta, and then gently mix through the sage butter and pine nuts. Transfer to bowls or serving platter.

The program will provide the chance for more than 5000 senior residents to enjoy a diverse range of activities, many of them for the first time.

Strathpine’s Janet Allen, pictured, has participated in Older and Bolder for more than a decade and has “tried so many different activities that I never would have tried otherwise”.

“I would never have climbed Mt Tibrogargan, but thanks to this program, I have! I would never have abseiled down Mt Ngungun either,” she said.

“The abseiling was such a challenge and so fabulous that I contacted the provider separately and booked in for other members of my family to do it.”

This year’s Older and Bolder activities include aqua aerobics, tai chi, archery, high ropes adventures, dancing and gym sessions specifically for seniors.

More relaxed activities include cooking classes, nutrition, gardening and ancestry workshops and guided tours of Moreton Bay region’s destinations and attractions, through ten themed mystery bus tours.

“There’s something for everyone in this year’s Older and Bolder program, which offers activities for better health, recreation and adventure, inspiration and getting out and about to explore and enjoy our beautiful natural environment,” Moreton Bay Mayor Allan Sutherland said.

Murphy’s Pigs fly out to France

O

ne of Queensland’s best-loved Irish-Celtic inspired bands is on its way to Europe.

Brisbane ten-piece Murphy’s Pigs, featuring Closeburn guitarist Chris Jack and drummer Dan Loth from Albany Creek, will perform at the 46th Festival Interceltique de Lorient in France.

Fellow Australian acts such as guitarist Tommy Emmanuel, Queensland Irish Pipe Band and indigenous singer-songwriter Archie Roach will also perform at the festival from 5-14 August.

Murphy’s Pigs last performed at the annual Celtic festival, held in the city of Lorient in Brittany, a decade ago.

“By the end of the last show we had 13 guest artists that wanted to come and play with us, including most of Jon English’s session players who came for the festival,” Jack recalls.

Jack says that Murphy’s Pig’s best gigs are the ones “when people laugh a lot.”

“The gigs we enjoy most are when the audience are with us and really enjoy the camaraderie and the humour entering into the songs,” Jack said. “We just basically have good fun.”

Following the visit to Europe, Murphy’s Pigs will perform at the Bony Mountain Festival near Warwick and will play four hometown shows at Mick O’Malleys Irish Pub in Brisbane City from September to December.

heatre lovers are being invited to a play with their food with the new offering from a Strathpine-based community drama troupe.

Act 1 Theatre’s new show The Last Resort, a comedy set in a retirement village, is a theatre restaurant production.

Set in the foyer of a retirement home, rebranded ‘Strathpine Palms’ for its local production, The Last Resort sees things go awry when the middle-aged residents of the resort plan a concert to raise funds for a scenic bus trip.

“We have two married couples, one with a nagging wife and a hubby who is outgoing, effervescent and a friend to everybody,” The Last Resort director Terry Frawley explains.

“The other couple, he has the early stages of dementia and does crosswords all the time, but probably is pretending and has not really got it at all.”

Speaking to The Westerner last year, The Last Resort writer Judith Prior said the play was based on her experience of trying to convince her mother-in-law to move into a retirement home. “(Plays) start out as something in real life that will springboard me into an idea and I just play it from there,” the Bundaberg playwright said.

Given that all but one of The Last Resort’s characters are older, show patrons

will see some of the Brisbane community theatre scene’s most experienced actors on stage at Strathpine.

The show features regular Act 1 Theatre talents such as Errol Barnett, Val Rowles, Jeff La Roche, Jon Quinn as the “bumbling half-senile fella” and Lilian Harrington as the “nagging, haranguing wife”.

Frawley said having previously worked with the actors made it easier to bring out good performances from the cast.

“With Jeffrey, it is a foregone conclusion.

All he’s got to do is step on stage, wrinkle his eyebrows and everybody laughs,” Frawley said.

As well as serving up top comedy to audiences, during the theatre restaurant show Act 1 will dish out tasty meals such as meatloaf on mash and chicken tenderloins wrapped in strips of bacon.

“We didn’t go for full puree food which you might get in a nursing home, we thought that might be a bit over the top,” Frawley joked.

The Last Resort opens at Act 1 Theatre, corner of Gympie Road and Hall Street, Strathpine on 13 August and runs for eight shows until 3 September.

I am not a fan of the Bourne series. I’ve always found them to be extremely derivative of each other. Each film is an exercise in mood and sombreness. There has never been an action hero as miserable and quiet as Jason Bourne (except for maybe Bond ala Daniel Craig).

If you go back and watch the older Bourne movies, they literally all contain a sullen Matt Damon, lots of people talking about the ‘asset’ in some CIA control room, a scene at a train station and an overlong car chase which substitutes for what most films would call a third act.

Also count how many times Bourne makes a simple phone call look intense by walking stridently while looking over his shoulder. If it wasn’t so damn serious it would be parody.

Well if you love that formula then you are going to love Jason Bourne because it’s more of the same – but on overdrive.

Damon has less than 25 lines in the film, is more stoic than ever and the plot echoes the same questions raised and answered in the last three films; who is Jason Bourne, and how did he become a trained killer?

Still, there’s a lot to enjoy, even if the movie only just passable. Jason Bourne is by no means a bad film, it is just not anything that stands out in a sea of action films. Good stunts, well edited fight scenes, suspense, it’s all here – but it’s just old.

Director Paul Greengrass, clearly bored and cashing a pay check, tries to make Jason Bourne more contemporary by using issues from today’s headlines like internet privacy and whistle-blowers, but this all feels like an afterthought and not anything true to the story.

The last Bourne film, The Bourne Legacy, with Jeremy Renner stepping in as a new protagonist with a different backstory, bombed at the box office and producers spent the last five years trying to get Damon to return to the role.

Obviously they produced a mountain of money because nothing in the script would warrant Damon to return to a role he has admitted he was artistically done with.

lmost eight years after he first picked up a bow and arrow, Kynan Schilling is set to represent Australia for the first time.

“Ecstatic” was the Samford Valley Target Archers member’s reaction after he was selected to compete at the World Archery Field Championships in Dublin, Ireland in September.

“I’ve been trying for a long time to make the national team and finally all the hard work has paid off,” he said.

“It’s my first time in Australian colours. It’s an incredible honour, but also very nerveracking.

“I’ve been shooting for just under eight years now. While it has been a long journey and a huge amount of work to get to this point, it does still amaze me that I have achieved everything that I have.”

The 19-year-old placed fourth in the open male recurve division of the Australian field archery tournament in Melbourne in May, an event won by Olympic gold medal winner Simon Fairweather.

“I’m representing Australia for field archery, in which you shoot three arrows each at 24 different targets played out amongst the bush or a forest of varying distances between five and 60 metres,” he said.

“The challenge in this discipline is that you first have to gauge the distance to the target, then be able to shoot it accurately.”

Schilling, who lives at Auchenflower but trains at Samford up to three times a week, expects the “hardest element to deal with” in Dublin would be cold weather.

Inspired to try archery by the bowmen in Lord of the Rings, Schilling isn’t setting any “over-the-top goals” for his first international archery competition.

“My only goal is to progress from the ranking round into the first round of elimination, which means making the top 16,” he said.

“I’m just focusing on being proud of my performance in Ireland.”

To help raise funds for Schilling’s selffunded trip to Ireland, Samford Valley Target Archers will host a special beginner’s archery course on 10 August.

arri McMahon “wanted to be an Olympian when I saw Cathy Freeman win gold in Sydney.”

Following 17 months punctuated by injury, McMahon’s 16-year Olympic dream will become reality when she runs on the field with Australia’s hockey team in Rio. The Commonwealth Games gold medal winner said selection in the Hockeyroos team for the Olympics was “a childhood dream come true” that “still doesn’t feel real”.

“I was so elated and excited with the announcement and to be sharing it with my parents that day was very special,” McMahon said.

“The Olympics are a very special time for me. Whenever they came on every four years, I was practically glued to the TV watching every sport all day long.”

The 23-year-old’s Olympic selection was particularly sweet given she has endured injuries such as a stress fracture in her foot and a double fracture to her jaw, after taking a ball to the head at training.

“I have had a lot of serious injuries in the last year and it makes the selection so much more special because there were times that I was unsure if my body would hold up to give me the best chance at selection time,” she said.

McMahon, who lived at Arana Hills and attended Patricks Road State School at Ferny Hills before moving with her family to South Australia, expects the Olympics to be “one of the toughest tournaments that I will ever go to”.

“Not only is international women’s hockey so close in terms of all the teams and the world rankings but it will also be a tournament with a lot of distractions

and hype and excitement,” she said.

“Having gone to the Commonwealth Games in 2014 I feel a little more at ease being at a multi-sport event with a village lifestyle.”

The 104-game Hockeyroos defender says players will be under extra pressure with a new Olympic tournament format of the top eight teams after pool matches to play off in sudden-death quarter finals.

“Quarter finals are a very tense time as it takes out the importance of the round games and evens the playing field of teams that haven’t done consistently well in the round matches,” McMahon said.

“It puts a lot of pressure on the quarter final day but to win the gold medal at the Olympics you need to win all games, so that is what we are aiming to do.”

And the Arana Ascot Hockey Club junior believes Australia has what it takes to take on tournament favourites Argentina and Netherlands and win its first women’s Olympic hockey medal since 2000.

“We are very happy with our preparations heading into the Games and very positive that we will play our fast, aggressive style of hockey that all of the other world teams have trouble playing against,” she said.

“Physically and tactically we are the best in the world and it’s just about putting the fine tuning on our technical skills... leading in (to Rio Olympics).

“I think that we have a great balance of youth and experience with some of the girls going to their second and third Olympics.

“Our expectation is to be on the podium at the Olympics and we want to be there to win gold.”

Olympic Memories Kristie-Anne Ryder, Petrie (formerly of Joyner) Judo – 2008 Beijing Olympics You were only 18 when you competed in Beijing. Was that a daunting experience?

Parts of it were daunting, for example the lead-up. Judo doesn’t often get much publicity and I had no experience doing interviews or public speaking and it was all very surreal for me. I tried to treat it like a normal competition and not focus on anything outside of my regular preparation.

Were you happy with your performance in Beijing?

My approach for the Olympics was to go in there and give it everything I had but at the same time I was still fairly new in the senior international field so I told myself not to take on any pressure, to enjoy it and use it as an experience for my future. I am happy now knowing I did the best I could with the resources I had available to me.

What are your favourite memories of your Olympic Games experience?

A lot of my family helped me get to the Olympics, my mum especially! Both of my aunties, my two grandparents and my mum were there watching me fight (in Beijing).

One of my favourite memories is getting to share the experience with my mum, show her around the village, have her there when

I fought and celebrating with her when it was all over. She is possibly the only other person who knows just how much of myself I gave to be there at the Olympics.

Following on from your judo career you have done mixed martial arts, wrestling and Brazilian jiu jitsu. How did you get into those sports?

I got injured and took some time off (from) judo. I was offered an opportunity to compete in an all-female charity MMA 12-week course where at the end we had the opportunity to fight. I got to be the main event on the card and won my fight in 30 seconds with a judo throw and arm bar! I have really enjoyed learning some other techniques and have done a few other small competitions but more often than not it’s judo that gives me an edge in the cage.

What do you do with yourself now?

I have a two-year-old son who beats the Olympics as the best thing that’s ever happened to me. I teach beginner judo at Gamebred Academy. For the last 12 months I have been focusing on improving my BJJ (Brazilian jiu jitsu) and wrestling. I am looking forward to getting back in and competing in another field of martial arts.

The competitive gene is engrained in me.

I am not finished yet!

Matthew Smith, Ferny Hills Hockey – 1996 Atlanta Olympics (bronze medal) What do you remember most about winning the bronze medal game against Germany and the tournament itself, and were you satisfied with a bronze medal?

At the time it was very disappointing not to be playing in the gold medal match.

Australia had never lost to Spain and we had beaten them convincingly in a pre-tournament game. Looking back I am happy to have come home with a medal.

We had not beaten Germany for a long time going into the bronze medal match.

What are your favourite memories of the 1996 Olympics not involving hockey?

We were banned from leaving the Olympic village after a bomb went off in an area visited by athletes and families, so we did not get to a lot of other sporting events.

It was nice to be involved in the opening ceremony and watch Muhammad Ali light the Olympic cauldron.

Did competing at the Olympics match your expectations for the event?

I received an injury against the Dutch in the second game so I was struggling with that a little. I probably did not play my best hockey at the Olympics, which was disappointing.

Who were your Olympic heroes as a kid?

I remember watching the gold medal match of the ’92 Olympics at Michael

This was probably my first real interest in wanting to play for Australia. I was lucky enough to play alongside Michael two years later when I made my debut for the Kookaburras.

What are people’s reactions when they find out you are an Olympic medallist?

It’s not something that you really bring up too often. I have been in different working environments where no one would know.

What do you miss about playing elite sport and what don’t you miss about it?

The big thing you miss is the thrill of having a good win with your mates. I don’t miss early morning weight or beep tests.

You now coach a hockey team in Brisbane. As a former elite athlete do you feel an obligation to pass on knowledge gained from your sporting career to others?

Not really, I stay involved in the game because I still enjoy being part of a sporting team. There are a lot of good things that come out of being a part of any team and I am just lucky enough to have played at the highest level. Hopefully I can pass on a few things I learnt from some of the very best coaches in Australia.
