e all have those sliding-door moments W – those micro decisions and random encounters that profoundly change the course of our lives – or even history. For me it was a last-minute change of heart to attend a friend-of-a-friend’s barbecue where I met my husband. For Gillian Armstrong, Australia’s first lady of film, it was a word of advice from a virtual stranger, a female TV editor who warned that if she accepted a job as a script assistant, she’d likely never leave the script department. The aspiring young director heeded the advice, went to film school and the rest is history. I wonder if that TV editor ever recalled the encounter and realised that, if not for her, we might never have had such cinematic gems as My Brilliant Career, Mrs Soffel and the new biopic on Hollywood costume powerhouse Orry-Kelly, Women He’s Undressed. Read more about the director’s brilliant career, and her fight against the boys’ club mentality, in this week’s cover story.

Stupid and foolhardy though it might be, it’s in my nature to step in. And living in a part of town that’s still quite gritty and full of interesting characters, that can lead to strange encounters. It comes with the territory. My tram line, for example, has to be the most dysfunctional in Melbourne: there’s a scene straight out of Cop Shop on board almost every time I travel. One time, a clearly very troubled young woman had got herself involved in a slanging match with some guy. He beat a hasty retreat – she was pretty formidable, even while you could see pain etched on her face – but she wouldn’t let up. The situation was heading towards explosion. I went to her and asked if I could buy her a coffee and urged her off the tram at the next stop. We sat and chatted for an hour or so at a café and I got some insight into the difficulties of her life, and her particular challenges in perceiving the world around her. I know I solved no particular problem for her, but maybe she felt that there was someone on that tram who didn’t think she was a complete nut – and sometimes I feel that’s all I can do. I’ve stood at intersections in my suburb and reached out and grabbed elderly residents back as they were about to blithely step into the path of yet another construction vehicle (it’s going to be a great place to live when they finally stop building it), and I’ve steered blokes

with their brains on fire in the direction of the hostel down the road. Now, none of this is meant to present me as a saint: actually I’m just a bossy busybody who can’t help but stick her nose in what’s going on around me. But I also know that the cliché of “slipping through the cracks” is actually a reality in my neck of the woods, with the disenfranchised just managing to find a toehold in this part of Melbourne. So I step in. For good or ill. As to the bloke in my car, I don’t know what his real story is. He certainly had gathered up all he could find in the vehicle, and it seemed to me he had planned to carry it off. Was he really homeless? My mate Tony Keenan, of the homelessness organisation Launch Housing, always tells me that the best thing you can do is call the police: they are someone’s best chance of getting safe accommodation for the night. The coppers seemed to be treating him right. I hope he’s OK. ● Virginia Trioli is co-host of ABC News Breakfast on ABC1 and ABC News 24, 6-9am weekdays

ell of course, on reflection, I should have gone back inside, locked the door and called the police. Just ask my husband: he’s furious at me. Ever since revealing an early-morning encounter with a would-be car thief [Virginia found a man rummaging in her car, scolded him and ordered him to stand on the kerb and wait while she called the police – which he obligingly did] I’ve been inundated with mostly kindly, sometimes quite horrified, scolding about not taking on strangers engaged in nefarious activities, no matter how angry or in a hurry one might be. Funny thing, the fight or flight instinct, the rapid engagement of the locus coeruleus and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis … ahem. As if anybody could be in control of that. The physical and mental stress response is unavoidable (unless you’re a fighter pilot or a brain surgeon) but the way you go about dealing with that response is down to your nature and personality, which are of course creations of a thousand different things. Me, I lead with my jaw. A glass jaw, sometimes.

HARI RAJ meets Gillian Armstrong

her brilliant career First lady: Director Gillian Armstrong at the Astor Theatre. (MICHAEL RAYNE A AYNE R)

I

t’s been more than four decades since Gillian Armstrong applied for work at the ABC, but she vividly recalls the interaction. Perched on a couch at the stately Astor Theatre, wearing a half-smile that flits between playful and sardonic, one of Australia’s pioneering film directors leans forward to tell the story. “Back then, there were only two job options in Melbourne – you worked for Crawford [Productions] or you worked for ABC drama. The ABC wrote back to me and said, ‘We don’t interview women in camera, sound, staging or editing – please send in your typing speeds’,” Gillian says, eyes alight at the impending punchline.

8 THE WEEKLY REVIEW \ AUGUST 19, 2015

“I never went back there, ha! And guess what, I never learnt to type.” We’re all the richer for that inability. Gillian has built a brilliant career telling intimate stories on sprawling canvases, or vice versa. Her characters are as rich and as witty and as fascinated by the chiaroscuro of gender roles as she is. After rocketing to international fame with 1979’s My Brilliant Career Career, the director’s own career has straddled the Pacific Ocean. Her 1994 adaptation of Little Women garnered three Academy Awards and rapturous notices; 21 years later she’s still drawing plaudits, this

time for her latest film, Women He’s Undressed, a look at the life of Oscar-winning Australian costume designer Orry-Kelly. In person, Gillian’s speech is a warm and wonderfully inconsistent thing, capable of rambling in reminiscence before darting in with the speed of a snakebite to make a point. But there is no venom, just an outrage no less sharp for its calluses. Quite simply, when it comes to gender disparity behind the camera, Armstrong has had enough. “I cannot believe that I was being interviewed 40 years ago about how rare it was to be a female director,” she

says. “Things should have changed by now. That is why I’m speaking up. It’s appalling – it should be an equal ball game and it’s plainly not. There are just as many young women coming out of film school, just as many women winning short film awards, and they’re not out there directing.” She has a point. A recent report by Monica Davidson, a researcher at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School, found that although the number of directing students at the school is split evenly between genders, only 15 per cent of Australian feature films are made by women. Little wonder Gillian is calling for affirmative action to boost the number of female creatives in the industry. She explains that when she was a “young and snobby” filmmaker with a slew of awards to her name, she thought that talent should be the only denominator of success – but she’s changed her tack after too many years of seeing too many women miss out on the lucrative, vital training provided by the advertising industry. “I see young women who win awards and nothing happens, but the young guy who did the jokey film – not the most amazing film, but the funny fart-joke film – he gets invited to meet the advertising people. Why? Because I think 90 per cent of the creatives in advertising are blokey males, and they’re getting more blokey males in to direct ads,” she says.

“It’s appalling – it should be an equal ball game and it’s plainly not” She concedes that television is one of the few areas where women are shining, and name-checks the likes of Aussie productions Offspring and Tangle, as well as Homeland, Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones in the US as proving grounds for female directors. But she bemoans the male-driven focus of modern cinema. “There is a blinkered fallacy that teenage boys are the greatest cinemagoers and make the most money for films. I remember talking to Meryl Streep about this when she was publicising Mamma Mia!, and she said, ‘I’m doing this around the world because I want people to know that women’s films can be commercial’.”

G

illian Armstrong was born in Melbourne in 1950. She attended Vermont High, now Vermont Secondary College, and was exposed to photography via her father, a real-estate agent by trade but a keen amateur shutterbug. Her mother was a primary school teacher, and later a homemaker, and Gillian has often recollected her parents’ support for their children’s dreams, something relatively uncommon for women growing up in the ’60s and ’70s. Still, she says, a life behind the camera wasn’t something she dreamed of as a child. “You have to realise that when I grew up in Melbourne, there was no Australian film industry at all. I always loved theatre and design, and I thought maybe I’ll do something behind the scenes, in costume or sets,” she says. She enrolled to study costume and set design at Swinburne University but hit a wall in her final year. “I realised I only had about six ideas.” So she channelled her frustration into writing and making short films. The bug had bitten. “I realised that everything I was interested in had come together,” she says. “I always liked literature and storytelling, I loved design and art, and I loved actors and photography. Film was a way to do them all.” The young Gillian won what she modestly describes as “a couple of awards” for these early films, but work was hard to come by. She worked on Fred Schepisi’s first film, as a tea girl; then came that fateful correspondence with the ABC. “All the boys got interviews,” she recalls. “So I went

the director’s cut “I don’t have five favourite films,” says Gillian. “I have 30 of them!” In the interests of economy, however, here are five:

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD

T Take your children to see this, as my dad did with us, and they will learn (as we did) a lifelong lesson about racism and tolerance. They’ll also fall in love with Gregory Peck and little Scout as I did at age 10. It’s important that our heroes have moral compasses.

SOME LIKE IT HOT

Orry-Kelly designed both Marilyn’s unforgettable, out-there, sexy-but-innocent frocks – and also Jack Lemmon’s and Tony T Curtis’s frocks! Y Yes, they had to pass themselves off as believable, if plain, women in the story. It is also laugh-out-loud funny and charming.

THE PIANO

Jane Campion’s extraordinary second feature with Holly Hunter and Sam Neill cast to play against type. Jane won the Academy Award for best screenplay, and it’s the film that proves women are equal if not better as film directors. There were also great costumes from our own Janet Patterson, who was nominated for Best Costume that year.

THE GODFATHER PART II

I liked the first one as well but Al Pacino was amazing in this and so was the wonderful Diane Keaton. They have a truly disturbing scene in the kitchen. Life message: don’t marry into the Mafia. Every crime story has been influenced by this powerful film.

CASABLANCA

Orry-Kelly designed the elegant and timeless costumes. I had already seen it three times before working on Women He’s Undressed Undressed. Y You fall in love with Ingrid Bergman, Humphrey Bogart and the music. In his memoir, Orry-Kelly wrote about ‘standing on the side of the set adjusting Ingrid’s costume, and the pianist was playing As Time Goes By By. And she said, ‘What a beautiful tune …’ Of course it became a classic. Gregory Peck & Mary Badham \ To Kill a Mockingbird (UNIVERSAL STUDIOS \ GETTY IMAGES) Marilyn Monroe, T Tony Curtis & Jack Lemmon \ Some Like It Hot (MICHAEL OCHS ARCHIVES \ GETTY IMAGES) Harvey Keitel \ The Piano (MONDADORI PORTFOLIO VIA GETTY IMAGES) Al Pacino \ The Godfather Part II (SILVER SCREEN COLLECTION \ GETTY IMAGES) Humphrey Bogart & Ingrid Bergman \ Casablanca (RÖHNERT \ ULLSTEIN BILD VIA GETTY IMAGES)

off to Sydney, Fred gave me the number of someone who was directing (TV series) Spyforce, with Jack Thompson, and I went there for an interview to be script assistant – then I mentioned that I had made a short film. “Nobody had made a short film then, and there were no film schools in Sydney, so they said come back. They had a little screening and invited all the editors, and one of them – I think it was a woman – said, ‘You’ve got creative talent, don’t be a script assistant, you’ll never get out of it’.” In 1973, the country’s first film school was founded. The Australian Film and Television School’s first intake was just

12 students, and included the likes of Phillip Noyce and Chris Noonan – and Gillian Armstrong. Five years later, it was lost on no one that the title of My Brilliant Career could be seen as portentous commentary for the young director’s prospects. Upon the film’s release, The Washington Post dubbed Gillian “the most sensitive and accomplished woman director in the English-speaking world”. Inundated with offers from Hollywood, however, she chose to stay in Australia and do Starstruck (1982), starring Jo Kennedy. “At that time we weren’t expecting to ever work over there … I think Bruce Beresford and Fred (Schepisi) and Peter (Weir) might have just started meeting with Hollywood studios,” she says. “I knew that I had a lot to learn; I wasn’t going to rush over there. I just wanted to make good films, and I was very happy to make them in Australia – but when I was publicising Starstruck I was approached by [producer] Scott Rudin about Mrs Soffel. It was the story that got me – it didn’t matter that I was going to be making a Hollywood film. The key thing was the story.” It wasn’t all bright lights and big bucks, though. Gillian soon realised that larger budgets produce correspondingly larger headaches. “Let me tell every young filmmaker – you may think you’re going to have more money to make films over there, you’re going to get paid more too, but you dance with the devil,” she says, grinning at the ghosts of injustices past. “It was very, very hard; there is so much interference. It’s much harder to retain creative control. It’s an artistic battle.”

T

hat’s a fight she won with Women He’s Undressed. She cast Darren Gilshenan as Orry-Kelly himself, who speaks to the camera in languid, dreamlike interludes – an unusual choice that ends up working a treat. The film was the end result of two years of detective work, tracking down snippets of interviews with older actors and unpublished manuscripts. Orry-Kelly, the professional name of Orry George Kelly, was at the centre of old Hollywood. He was involved with Cary Grant, and it is bittersweet watching their relationship grow and founder. It’s also astonishing that the man and his life had been forgotten for years. “I’d never heard of Orry-Kelly, I’m ashamed to say, seeing as how I work in the film business. I was quite shocked to find out the amazing films he had designed,” Gillian says, checking them off on her fingers – Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, 42nd Street. His accolades include close to 300 film credits, and three Oscar awards. Gillian has had costume designers on her films nominated for Oscars, and understands the importance of the clothes a character wears. “The costume helps the actor create their character.” It was an invitation to a film festival panel in Newcastle that led Gillian to a fortuitous discovery – the manuscript of Orry-Kelly’s unpublished memoir, which had been stashed in a pillowcase in a cupboard for decades. She helped get Orry-Kelly’s family a book deal – it was published on August 1. And if she were to write a memoir, how would she look back on her brilliant career? “I can look back and feel very satisfied and very privileged that I had made films that have touched people, and affected them. People all over the world have come up to me and told me about looking for their birth mother after watching High Tide, or that My Brilliant Career made them pursue their dream of becoming a writer. That’s incredibly moving.” She pauses, looks up, unleashes a dazzling grin. “I can die happy.” ● hraj@theweeklyreview.com.au » Women He’s Undressed is in cinemas and on bookshelves now. » ACMI will also celebrate Orry-Kelly’s work with an extensive exhibition, Orry-Kelly: Dressing Hollywood, which opens on August 18. Cellar Notes WINE DIAMONDS

Tartaric acid \ Tartaric acid is susceptible to temperature fluctuations. It solidifies at cold temperatures, forming those crystals. It helps to stabilise wine and maintain its colour – less important in wines that will be drunk within a year or two of release. Wineries can remove tartrates by chilling the wine to just above freezing point. Crystals form, drop to the bottom of the tank and are easily removed. Sister Noon by Karen Joy Fowler (Profile Books) www.allenandunwin.com

Bewitching and occasionally baffling, this tale of lies and legendary women evokes the richly drawn world of Michael Chabon’s The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay Clay. Lizzie Hayes is a dull woman who has learnt to keep her romantic notions quiet. Mrs Pleasant – or Madame Christophe or Ellen Smith, depending on whom you ask – is anything but quiet. A lush and surprising read. ONLINE \ Interview with Karen Joy Fowler ●

The Basics \ The Age of Entitlement (The Three Basics) www.thebasics.com.au

Anger never sounded this much fun. The first LP in six years from the Melbourne trio (Kris Schroeder, Tim Heath and Gotye’s Wally De Backer) rages against our nation’s politicians, news media and general apathy. Time Poor and Whatever Happened To The Working Class? are Billy Bragg-esque polemics. But even this doom and gloom is delivered in a jaunty, irresistible mix of pop, punk and folk. ●

These are tricky times for satirists. While the first season of Utopia drew a sharp and savvy portrait of Australian politics, it was a hard task to make their politicians appear more comical and ridiculous than those currently running the country. Just as The Daily Show has long been America’s most trusted news source, comedy like this often feels closer to the truth behind power than more straight-faced analysis. ●

Connie is the one who told me I needed to upgrade my cheap chemist-shop hair straightener to the real deal. You’re worth it, she said, you won’t regret it, she enthused, and until it burnt my hair I didn’t. That straightener managed to turn really wiry days into something somewhere near manageable. Connie rang the manufacturer and arranged a replacement, free of charge. I told her I thought the kids may or may not be at fault here and she said, “Oh my god, kids, don’t let them near your straightener. I went into my girls’ bathroom once and found mine in the sink, plugged in and turned on”. And Bonnie and Lauren said, ‘Yeah right, as if mum’.

Anyway …

(ISTOCK)

ast week, in possibly one of the most frightening moments I’ve ever experienced in a bathroom, my hair straightener burst into flames and cooked my hair. The appliance and my hair smoked up a storm. As a result, I now have a fuzzball fringe and hair-straightener withdrawal, because hair straighteners are the crack-cocaine of hair-doing. Once you start using them, you really cannot stop. The kids deny any involvement. No, mum, they are saying, we didn’t put it anywhere near the water and we didn’t try to straighten Barbie’s hair with an electrical appliance and conditioner at the same time. Until I replace this, the Rolls Royce of hair straighteners, they and Barbie will have to go without and I will have to live with fluffy hair that looks a bit like a bad ’80s perm growing out but a little bit uglier. A lot uglier, if I’m honest. It is neither lush nor luxurious, and not any of the things hair is meant to be. Is not having a hair straightener the worst thing that can happen? Of course not, but

I’ve had a pretty ordinary week so having an inanimate object to channel all my discontent into is useful. It’s a fact that, if your hair is not right, your day is going to be crap so best to blame everything on a faulty appliance than the universe or the people you live with. Anyway, I took the straightener in to see Connie the hairdresser, who sold it to me in the first place. Connie runs a salon with her two daughters (one is named Bonnie, so they are Connie and Bonnie but the other daughter

is something like Lauren, which I’ve always felt is a missed opportunity). They all have immaculate, extremely straight hair. When I go there I feel like one of the family because they talk to each other like they are all around the kitchen bench. It’s all, “Mum, get me the comb”, and, “Make us a cuppa, love”. They all pitch in, so sometimes I think no one would bat an eyelid if I got up and helped out with the sweeping or got out the wax and whipped off someone’s moustache.

Just a few days until the new one arrives and I’ll actually be able to leave the house without a hat. Exciting times ahead. ● khall@theweeklyreview.com.au

Her designs are inspired by her Nigerian roots and focus on patterns found in nature. She lives in Toorak, but finds herself drawn to South Yarra for its fashion and the Botanic Gardens.

For inspiration? I’ll take a walk along Toorak Road and Chapel Street. You always see beautiful fashion, and a diverse crowd of people and styles. Also taking a stroll along the Yarra River; just the calmness and the dense bush surrounds remind me of my childhood “You can – the simpleness of nature. just cuddle

For some exercise? I’m quite relaxed when it comes to my exercise. Whenever I feel like it, I just go for a really brisk walk and combine that with jogging, usually down to the Botanic Gardens, then back to the Yarra. For a fantastic outfit? Of course I wear my own label, TimiAlaere, for the simplicity and it’s easy to dress up and dress down.

For the perfect gift? T2 in Chapel street. They have loads of tea delights so it’s perfect. Next door to that is the kiki.K store, and they have an endless supply of gifts. That’s my go-to. For relaxation? I’ll watch one of those Real Housewives shows. That just calms me down, seeing the drama among the women. I like the Melbourne one – it’s quite hilarious! The promise Theodora’s Beauty Boutique boasts that it is Melbourne’s No.1 brow boutique. With an Instagram profile full of swoon-worthy pics of clients’ newly sculpted brows, it’s easy to see why.

for the first time after the treatment, I can see how my new brows shape my face in a positive way. I look at my eye area in the mirror and can almost see the Anne Hathaway resemblance people say I have. Almost.

The reality I, like many whose teens were in the late ’90s and early 2000s, know the sadness that is the over-plucked eyebrow. Through my 20s I tried to get them to grow back, resisting the urge to tweeze even the most unruly hairs. Theodora says many of her clients have this problem, and that tinting can help to fill in the blanks. She starts by waxing the necessary areas to give me that Hollywood shape, mostly the top and a bit of the edges. Then it’s quickly onto the tint, which is left on for about five minutes.

The pain factor Waxing hurts. Well, we all know that, but it’s over in a flash.

The pay-off My brows are certainly more shapely, and the hairs are darker. Theodora still touches them up with a pencil to show me the shape I should be drawing in at home, as – try as you might – you can’t tint hairs that aren’t there. When I do my make-up properly

WEIGHTY ISSUE How do we give teens a positive body image, asks CHERYL CRITCHLEY

N

ext time you’re tempted to point out that your teenager has gained weight – don’t. While well-meaning, it can contribute to an obsession with weight and possibly an eating disorder. It has never been easier for girls – and boys – to develop a warped sense of body image. It was bad enough when today’s parents were young, with magazines and fashion models projecting an unattainable ideal. These days it’s everywhere, with the internet bombarding us with rake-thin celebrities, extreme diets and pro-anorexia blogs celebrating the dangerously underweight. Some media outlets don’t help by attacking celebrities who gain a few grams. Butterfly Foundation chief executive Christine Morgan says almost one in 10 Australians will experience an eating disorder requiring clinical intervention at some point in their lives. “People of all demographics are affected, including men and women of all ages, and children as young as five,” she says. The number seeking help is rising too; the

foundation has seen a 202 per cent rise in calls in 2013. Negative body image is a modifiable risk factor that can lead to serious social, medical and mental health issues, including eating disorders. Research shows people who diet to change their body shape are 18 times more likely to develop an eating disorder within six months, and one in five times more likely to develop an eating disorder over 12 months. How parents deal with body image is crucial. We must send our kids positive health messages and love our own bodies. I’ve always told my girls, now 14 and 16, that they don’t have to fit anyone else’s often distorted ideal. As Christine says: “Children are very sensitive to messages about body image and appearance from their parents. Often you may not even be aware of the message your child is hearing from you.” ● ccritchley@theweeklyreview.com.au

While GPs might not be formally trained in detecting an eating disorder, they are a good first base for discussing your concerns before approaching the topic with your child, or before organising an intervention or conversation. ● CHRISTINE MORGAN Chief executive of The Butterfly Foundation, National support line: 1800 334 673 www.butterflyfoundation.org.au

T H E S C H O O L P SYC H O LO G I S T At Firbank we have a holistic approach in our well-being programs. We emphasise the importance of students developing a sense of self-worth. We invite experts, such as Elizabeth North from The Self Centre and Enlighten Education (The Butterfly Effect) to present at personal development days across all year levels. We deal with body image and nutrition through our personal development, food technology, physical education and outdoor education curriculum. Commencing in year 7, we focus on healthy eating, body image and mental health. Staff are vigilant in identifying body image issues. Senior staff and I work with parents of students at risk to ensure a combined approach. We have an open-door policy and I supervise provisional psychologists, ensuring there are always several professionals with whom girls can talk. If there are concerns, I have a team of people to whom I refer, such as Dr Linsey Atkins (Hope Family Clinic) and dieticians. M AGA ZINES I am just eating up The New Yorker Yorker. The thing I love about it is that I might not be interested in a particular topic, but I will read about it because the article is so well written. There is everything from 100-word descriptions to 20,000-word essays.

he describes her personal aesthetic as “homeless rockstar”, but hospitality It Girl Jess Ho actually parks her Balenciagas in an apartment in a heritage-listed building in the heart of the Melbourne CBD. With tram and train stops at the door, and soaring ceilings, the apartment suits the restaurant blogger and social media wunderkind famously recruited by Chin Chin to give its brand more bang. “I did not want to live in a cookie-cutter sky box,” Jess says. “I like that this is an old building and has great bones. My ultimate plan, when the owner of the place next door dies, is to buy it, knock down the wall and live in a real space.” Not that Jess, 27, is home much these days. With her gig on Channel Seven’s Restaurant Revolution, she’s been advising on contestants’ pop-up eateries across Australia in between opening her own sleek wine bar, Smalls, in Yarra Place, South Melbourne. ● SARAH HARRIS sharris@theweeklyreview.com » Restaurant Revolution airs on Channel Seven, 8pm, Thursdays, au.tv.yahoo.com/ restaurant-revolution/ » Smalls smallsbar.com.au

fter more than 20 years playing Jarrod “Toadfish” Rebecchi on the soap Neighbours, it’s small wonder actor Ryan Moloney, 36, seems as familiar as the boy next door. In reality, it was a 10-kilometre bike ride from where Ryan grew up to Pin Oak Court, the Vermont South cul-de-sac that is the setting for the fictional Ramsay Street. “I lived in Chartwell Drive, Wantirna, in a mission-brown brick house with my parents Joan and Des, older brother Justin and younger brother Gareth,” Ryan says. “It had archways and that kind of yellow-brown glass with a pattern that looked like the bottom of bottles. Half the walls and ceiling were clad with pine, and the bathroom wallpaper featured cherubs with soap. “Out the back there was a sandpit where I used to play with my Matchbox cars and make little tracks and build carports out of sticks and leaves. When I was really little, I went through a stage where I liked eating cat food and we didn’t have a cat, but this house down the road did. I remember going there and putting my hand through the cat gate to get the cat food, and not just once.

“We had English and Irish setter show dogs. They won a couple of ribbons but never took out the Melbourne Show best in breed or anything. We got the job of sitting in the dogs’ stalls for the day to make sure no one poisoned them … like that was a big thing! “We spent a lot of time riding our bikes round to friends’ houses. You would ride to one friend’s house and, if they weren’t home, go on to the next. I remember when I was about 13 we got into ouija boards. ‘Are there any spirits in the room?’ Once we asked what

tone, glass and timber come together in perfect harmony at this luxurious inner-city house in South Yarra’s prized Botanic Gardens precinct. Designed by SJB architects, the house, built for the owners 16 years ago, combines style and function effortlessly. The building’s pared-back style features a façade of sandstone and oxidised bricks with wide copper eaves. Extensive use of glass allows natural light inside and timber panelling adds to the luxurious finishes. A full-height front door opens to a world of understated luxury. The ground floor is given over to a large living and dining area, fitted study or library, bar and kitchen, with all informal living opening to a north-facing terrace for indoor/outdoor entertaining. Good design lasts and that maxim is evident throughout this house. All rooms are spacious and designed to capture natural light as well as provide privacy. A lift to all three levels is at the core of the building. The wide carpeted staircase offers an alternative. At the front, the fitted study or library is private, but full-height double doors link it to the informal meals and family area. In the living and dining room, a band of south-facing horizontal windows just below ceiling height allows views of the greenery outside. On the eastern side of the room, that band of windows extends to full-height glazing, with more plants for a different green aspect. Having the windows up high gives clear wall space for hanging art. Full-height timber double doors connect the dining room to a bar and cellar with wine fridges. The bar area, with its timber-panelled ceiling and walls, stone bar and glass shelves with mirrored background, hints at glamorous nights where martinis are stirred, not shaken. The open-plan family and meals area beckons on the other side of the bar. This room, with a wall of built-in cabinetry

at one end, has full-height windows and central glass doors that connect it to the terrace. The neighbours might be on the other side of the terrace wall, but you never feel hemmed in. With doors open between the formal and informal parts of the house, it would be easy to host large parties here. In the kitchen, a granite-topped island bench separates the dining area from the workspace against the wall, where the central cooking zone has a Smeg five-burner cooktop and granite splashback. Cabinets to ceiling height, finished in 2pac, take care of storage, with ovens in vertical formation at the end of the wall. Tucked away behind the kitchen is a large butler’s pantry with a fridge and more storage. A laundry, larger than many in conventional three-bedroom houses on quarter-acre blocks, has outdoor access. The first floor is given over to three bedrooms. All are off a hall that opens to the north-facing terrace. Two bedrooms occupy one side of the floor. Both have stone en suite bathrooms with frameless glass showers and walk-in wardrobes. The main bedroom takes up half the first floor. It has windows overlooking the terrace. Two sliders lead to a large walk-in wardrobe with fitted shelving and storage. More sliders open to the all-marble en suite: white-veined marble floor, marble walls and a bathtub encased in similar marble. A vanity with dark cabinetry and stone benchtops at either end of the bath provide his-and-hers workspaces. The lower level is made up of three storerooms, a gym and powder room, as well as parking for up to six cars. With its elegant design, proximity to the city, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Yarra River, cafés, shops and a host of schools, this house is a winner in the highly sought-after “west-of-Punt Road” precinct. ● MARIA HARRIS property@theweeklyreview.com.au

This little patch of Hawthorn is a hidden gem. Just metres from the Yarra River and the great shopping strips of Bridge Road and Victoria Street, this pocket enjoys the best of inner-city living. On the northern side of Brook Street, this Edwardian house is full of character. The weatherboard façade has a front-facing gable end. Inside, an L-shaped hallway leads past two good-sized bedrooms, with built-in wardrobes, into a cosy living room with an open fireplace. Each room at the front has pressed-metal ceilings, cornices, architraves and high ceilings. The kitchen is in its own zone and is lit by a skylight. A white-tiled splashback complements the timber cabinetry. With its advantageous orientation, the back of the house is designed to captivate, making entertaining outdoors easy. The garden further promotes this idea and includes a paved dining area protected by a retractable awning. A pond breaks up the space and separates the paving from the green lawn. ● FRANCESCA CARTER

Built in the 1930s and one of only three houses in the street, this gorgeous heritage residence is a stone’s throw from Camberwell Grammar. Skirted by lush gardens, it has a double carport that gives way to a pool and courtyard. Inside, a spacious slate-floored foyer leads to a guest bedroom with en suite. Adjacent is a formal dining room with exquisite leadlight windows and a fireplace. From here, the kitchen with stainless-steel appliances can be accessed through a walk-in pantry; out the other side is a laundry, powder room and a small family room. There are two grand spaces opposite. The sitting room in the front has a gas fireplace while the formal lounge has its own entry. Here, ornate ceilings combine with marble, dark and polished timber and leadlight windows to create a truly impressive space. On the first floor, there are two bedrooms with built-in wardrobes. The main has an en suite and both bedrooms bookend a retreat and additional bathroom. A third, loft-style bedroom occupies the second floor. ● JULIAN HEALEY

TOORAK \ 4/103 MATHOURA RO ROA OAD This luxury apartment is an excellent example of why Toorak has earned its reputation as one of Melbourne’s most exclusive suburbs. From the oak parquetry floor to the grand proportions throughout the interiors, this outstanding house would be a pleasure to live in. Close to the area’s many glamorous shopping strips, this four-year-old apartment is one of five and comes with three car spaces in an area where parking is at a premium. The entry opens to the two minor bedrooms on the left and the impressive open-plan sitting, dining, kitchen and family room straight ahead. The open-plan living area offers plenty of flexibility, and extensive glazing keeps it bright and breezy. Privacy has been considered and many of the windows have louvres and frosted sections on the lower half, one featuring a floral design on textured glass. Sleek and well-appointed, the kitchen has Miele appliances, glossy white cabinetry, an integrated Liebherr fridge and a butler’s pantry. A terrace provides an outdoor dining option. All three bedrooms have en suites. The two minors are tiled in marble with showers and the main en suite is a larger, more glamorous version and has a standalone bath, walk-in shower and double handbasins. The spacious main bedroom enjoys the northern sun and has a fully fitted walk-in wardrobe. ● JAN FISHER

AUGUST 19, 2015 \ THE WEEKLY REVIEW 33

KEW \ 21 REDMOND STREET This house created a sensation in 1946 when it was built in the Studley Park valley. Designed by three recently demobbed army mates – Robin Boyd, Kevin Pethebridge and Francis Bell – for a fourth mate, it had features that had been espoused during the war for a house-hungry nation. This house introduced many of its ideas in the maximum size allowed – 1250 square feet. That’s about 115 square metres, or the size of an informal living area in St Georges Road, Toorak. The single-storey house reversed traditional planning principles and introduced new materials. The kitchen was fully fitted. The service rooms faced the street, living areas were at the rear. The kitchen was open to the living room and was lined with cupboards. In 1950, when restrictions were eased, the upper floor was added, providing a second living room, two more bedrooms, a second bathroom and a balcony to, at last, capture views of the city. Its front section provided a carport and its north wall consisted of a spectacular 30-light window frame. Over the years, wallpaper and timber panelling have been added as decorative touches but the original form and style of this significant house are evident. Original architectural drawings tell the story of the staged development of the house that changed our ideas of houses. ● NEIL CLEREHAN

TOORAK \ 2 GRONG GRONG COURT On the gloomiest midwinter day, the sunny disposition of this Mediterranean-style house emanates an inviting cheeriness. Blue-and-white Portuguese feature tiles, intricate wrought-iron work, terracotta-tiled terraces and balconies, and a stunning pool and cabana in a walled garden create a romantic and relaxed ambience. The design of the c1930s house uses its irregular, sloping block to create an elevated three-level haven with views across the suburbs to Xavier College’s chapel dome in Kew. Off the kerb is a triple garage with workroom and a hike up the front steps to a water feature and a black wrought-iron front door, its pattern replicated in the balustrade of a white spiral staircase inside. The parquetry-floored ground level has beautifully fitted formal lounge and dining rooms to the left – including original cherub light fittings and marble fireplace – leading to a shady terrace. On the right is a kitchen exuding glamour from pearlescent joinery and stylish appliances, plus a meals area and living room. The combination of a cupola with pentagonal panes, picture windows and glass doors maximises natural light and views to the pool. There’s a bedroom with en suite on each level. Additionally, the middle level has the main bedroom with wardrobes, french doors to a large balcony and adjoining study (or fifth bedroom). ● JACQUI HAMMERTON

Opposite Minifie Reserve, this single-level house in the leafy north-east corner of Balwyn has been expertly updated. Big and bright, it begins with a calm, carpeted living area. Once sunken, it has since been elevated, modernising the space and bringing it level with the rest of the house. The main bedroom is carpeted and zoned at the front, away from other bedrooms. Built-in wardrobes span one wall and it has an en suite. Adjacent, double doors open to a carpeted study. From here, access to the skylit hallway and additional bedrooms can be open or closed off. All three bedrooms at the rear have built-in wardrobes, while at the end of the hall is a bathroom with spa, a separate laundry and separate toilet. The real jewel, though, is the expansive open-plan family and meals area. With timber floors underfoot, it looks through ample glass to an undercover deck with spa on one side and landscaped gardens on the other. All this, wrapped around a stone kitchen with timber cabinets and stainless-steel appliances. ● JULIAN HEALEY

Tudor-style features of cedar panelling and dark-stained timber door and window frames, balustrade, skirting boards and battens give this 1920s house the distinctive formality of its era. Yet the casual living areas and modern bathrooms that suit the 21st century are complementary; they, and the west-facing garden and pool area, create a balanced family home. At the front of the house are formal rooms with fireplaces and leadlight windows, plus three bedrooms. The back includes a family room and a granite kitchen that’s only six months old – its original butler’s pantry and bread-delivery hatch preserved. The upper floor is a parents’ retreat with attached study or nursery. The stucco house, on 821 square metres, has a tiled roof, a portico by its side entry, outdoor powder room and pool shower, auto gates and attic storage above a double garage. It’s close to trains, trams and Burke Road’s shopping and restaurant strip, and within the zones for Canterbury Girls’ Secondary College and Camberwell High School. ● JACQUI HAMMERTON
