’ve been maintaining my mental health by running on a treadmill. I feel like an idiot running on the spot while a piece of rubber rushes me along. However, I do relish the choice of virtual jogging modes. If only we had the same choices for our life journeys: uphill, cardio workout, fat burner and, my favourite mode for life as well, random. That’s where the degree of difficulty is out of your control. Sound familiar? The same options apply on stationary bikes. I feel even more of a tosser hunched over a cycling machine, sweating like a politician being interviewed by Leigh Sales on 7.30, and not actually travelling anywhere. I’m not great at balancing my body weight. I have to crash-test each new pair of stilettos to determine the potential damage I could inflict on bystanders and myself. Every time I’ve tried to surf I’ve landed unceremoniously panting in the shallows. The Berger chaos theory: whenever a butterfly flutters its wings, I topple over. I don’t need to move – I can come a cropper contemplating a shift from one foot to the other. Experts have told me it’s something to do with my inner ear – I blame the butterflies. However, if I walk on a riverside path or a bush track surrounded by nature, I never fall. Perhaps it’s the regular meditative roll and rhythm of walking outdoors or moving briskly through the landscape and connecting
