OBJECT OF DESIRE \ EAMES LOUNGE CHAIR & OTTOMAN

T

he Eames Lounge and Ottoman has become somewhat of an icon as one of the more significant furniture designs of the 20th century. Created in 1956 by famous design duo Ray and Charles Eames, the chair in now on display or put to use in homes, museums and offices. Permanently tilted at 15 degrees, the seat effectively works to take weight off the lower spine while the lower cushion acts to support it. The ottoman, too, while sculptural, was designed to restore normal blood flow after standing or sitting all day. The Eames were clearly concerned with ergonomics and as such pursued the notion of function over form. They are available in either hard-wearing, contract-grade leather or the MCL leather, a premium, semi-aniline, dyed, full-grain leather, which develops a rich patina over time. The softer, more supple leather allows the chair to age beautifully, which adds to the character. New, hand-oiled wood finishes have also been reintroduced to realign with the Eames’ original intention of a chair that ages with character and charm, just as we all should. \ SM
