TCB

TCB is a friendly gallery with a lively calendar of experimental art. Finding TCB can be an adventure in itself, so keep your eyes peeled for the iron door and rather homely staircase. Not as flashy as some of the other artist-run spaces (look out for the cosmic linoleum), TCB offers innovative work and great openings. 1000 £ BEND

Flea markets, exhibitions, vintage bike hire, a horror-cinema society and, ah, pilates classes – 1000 £ Bend is the place to go for a little bit of everything. The large rear gallery shows a variety of work from installations to performances, and there’s a café at the front where you can sit and take it all in. Events come and go quickly, so check the website regularly. 361 Little Lonsdale Street, CBD Monday-Friday 8am-7pm, Saturday-Sunday 11am-7pm www.thousandpoundbend.com.au

FOOTSCRAY COMMUNITY ARTS CENTRE

Footscray Community Arts Centre’s slogan is "Keeping Art Real", which is a good indication of what you’ll find here on any given day. the centre, which began in 1974, is all about creating communities, and features a broad range of work and an even broader audience. Home to artists, producers, teachers, community groups and more, it is a hub for art in the city’s west. 45 Moreland Street, Footscray Tueday-Sunday 9.30am-5pm www.footscrayarts.com

SEVENTH

CONICAL

Seventh is a smallish gallery that offers a platform to experiment and build relationships. Several shows are often held at once, so when opening night rolls around, expect a full house and a variety of work. A stone’s throw from several other artist-run spaces in the area, Seventh is a great place to begin an afternoon’s gallery hunting. 155 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy Tuesday-Saturday noon-6pm www.seventhgallery.org

Conical is a friendly and increasingly popular artist-run space in Fitzroy, with lots of natural light and an open ceiling that makes for great acoustics. Tucked away just off Johnson Street, this one can be hard to spot – watch out for the white and orange gallery signs. 3 Rochester Street, Fitzroy Wednesday-Saturday noon-5pm www.conical.org.au \ ADELE SMITH adelebsmith@gmail.com
