GIVE IT A GO JANE HONE SEEKS SOME BALANCE

The promise A one-hour consultation that uses bio-feedback to identify my body’s main health needs and how to address them. The reality We start by discussing my health concerns (a mixed bag of things like fatigue, sinus problems and chronic thirst). Anne, who worked as a pharmacist for 30 years before finding kinesiology, offers some suggestions on what might be causing them and how they’re linked. She explains that kinesiology works with the interconnected system of chakras, auras and light bodies and by communicating with our muscles. I see this in action when Anne puts a magnesium bag on my belly (to stabilise me) while she holds different parts of my body (arm, leg) and moves them around. It’s as if there’s a secret conversation happening between Anne and my muscles. We rove all over the place, touching on my food sensitivities (eggs and some sauces), emotional blockage (a “past hurt”) and deficiencies (minerals).

When I hear her mutter the words, “fire, summer, yang”, I stop her and ask what she’s talking about. Anne explains that these things are out of balance, which is amazing because I’ve heard exactly the same thing from traditional Chinese medicine practitioners.

We try KINESIOLOGY

The pay off Apart from feeling energetically clearer, I’m armed with new information to really help with my health journey. The pain factor OK, I’ll be honest: I did start crying at one point (hint: this was around the “past hurt” part).

WOULD I DO IT AGAIN?

Yes. Anne says the process is like peeling an onion. We’ve only reached the first layer! ●

Who’s behind the counter? Naturopath Candace Borg, plus her small team of practitioners and retail staff. After completing a degree in biomedicine, Candace worked at the Royal Melbourne Hospital but gradually became more interested in naturopathy. “I felt that medicine was too reactive and not preventative enough,” she says. “We were getting to people too late.” She went on to study naturopathy and has been practising for eight years.

A place to pick up natural, organic, locally made products that are guaranteed to be ethically sound.

While Northcote has always been a hub for the environmentally aware, Candace has noticed that people are now more conscious than ever of what they choose to consume. ● JANE HONE

What’s in store? “We research everything we stock. We look at travel miles; we look at company ethics; we look at ingredients,” says Candace. Every item in the store is vegan-friendly and free of palm oil. You will see essential oils, candles, therapeutic tea blends, soy-inked cards on recycled paper, bamboo baby products, natural cleaning products and self care items such as deodorants and skincare. She uses local businesses where possible. Who’s buying? A lot of new mothers are drawn to the stock for their natural ingredients. “A mum can know, if she’s buying a laundry detergent, for example, it’s going to be fine for her baby,” says Candace.
