ompulsive, destructive vices are rampant in Western countries. For some, it’s nicotine, alcohol or marijuana. For others, it’s a pornography addiction, or a proclivity to gamble away a week’s wages in 30 minutes. What sets those with a food addiction apart is that they are physically forced to carry the heavy burden through being overweight or obese. “They wear their binge,” says Associate Professor Gerard Kennedy of Victoria University. “These habits provide relief from psychological distress. It can be depression, loneliness or feelings of helplessness or hopelessness.” The weight gain, however, solidifies the cycle of misery and bingeing, and being overweight is linked to intensified risks of problems such as diabetes, cancer and heart disease. It’s a growing problem, with a Deakin University study of women living on Australia’s east coast finding morbid obesity had increased by 68 per cent between 1997 and 2008. In 2011-12, 63 per cent of Australian adults were overweight or obese, as were a quarter aged five to 17, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Compulsive overeaters don’t just go all out on dessert occasionally or pig out at a dinner party. Binge-eaters often eat huge amounts. “We hear stories of people going to the supermarket at 11pm, buying a four-litre bucket of ice cream and downing the whole thing,” says “Elaine”, a member of Overeaters Anonymous (OA) in Melton. To be classified as an overeater, a person must overeat at least once a week for three months. They often eat alone because they’re embarrassed about how much they are consuming. “What follows is usually shame or disappointment, or questioning why they did it,” says Kennedy. “When you speak to many obese people, they tend to say things like ‘when I lose 20 kilos I’m going to go out and have a good time’. And it’s a dangerous cycle where they won’t go out in places because they’re aware of their weight, which creates depression and encourages behaviours like staying home and eating away. Before the procedure, DiVito was diagnosed with diabetes, which disappeared within a month of the surgery. She has also suffered depression. “Although I still grapple with it, I haven’t had the problems I had in the past. It’s not the magic wand or pill, but it’s allowed me to get it under control.” The federal president of the Australian Medical Association, Steve Hambleton, says bariatric surgery is only part of the solution and shouldn’t be seen as a panacea for a lifetime of overeating. “Lifestyle changes and diet still need to be applied in order for it to be successful,” he says. Kennedy says people often play the blame game in dealing with obesity, and it shouldn’t be put down to a “weakness of character”. “Some people are made to carry more weight. I’ve told patients it’s better to be a little larger and happy than battling to be skinny all the time and completely miserable. “If that’s not you, you’re fighting a losing battle. Aniseed myrtle: Licorice and ouzo lovers will appreciate the smooth, sweet anise flavours that come from this native spice. Icecream, fish, steamed rice and tea all benefit from its zing. And while on the bush tucker bandwagon why not try a refreshing cocktail made from wild hibiscus: fill a tall glass with ice, add two stems of fresh mint, two sliced limes and chopped hibiscus flowers. In a cocktail shaker, combine two shots of white rum, one shot of hibiscus syrup, and lime juice. Shake well, strain into the glass and top with soda water.

ecause Burmese dishes often saddle up with Thai, Indian or Chinese food in restaurants across Melbourne, the nuances of Burmese traditions can be overlooked. But Myanmar, the official name for Burma, has such a strong food culture that its people have a rhyme to encapsulate its essence: “Of all the fruit, the mango’s the best; of all the meat, the pork’s the best; and of all the leaves, lahpet’s (pickled tea leaves) the best”. Taboos and superstitions can surround eating, such as one that discourages pregnant women from eating chilli in the belief that it causes children to have sparse scalp hair. (And who could bear that?) Myanmar’s staple food is white rice, which accompanies meat dishes. Vermicelli and rice noodles are used in soups, while thick rice and wheat noodles are used in salads. Palata, a flaky fried flatbread related to the Indian paratha, baked flatbread and puffedup fried bread often accompany curried meats. The cornerstone of any meal is ngapi, a fermented fish or shrimp paste. It is used in

soups, salads, main dishes, and a big range of condiments such as pickled mango. Tropical fruits are widely used in desserts. These include some tropical delights such as sugar-apple, pomelo, jackfruit and rambutan. Shwe yin aye, a dessert of agar jelly, tapioca and sago in coconut milk, is very popular. Another headliner is kat kyi hnyat – which means cut with scissors – a rice noodle dish of seafood, meat, raw bean sprouts, shredded cabbage and carrots dressed with fried peanut oil, fish sauce and lime. The unofficial national dish is mohinga: vermicelli in fish broth with onions, garlic, ginger, lemongrass and sliced soft core of a banana stem, served with boiled eggs, fried fish cake and fritters. Dedicated Burmese restaurants are thin on the ground in Melbourne, but some Indian and Thai eateries can dish up Burmeseinspired dishes – ask if there are any on the menu. And if you’re pregnant, mind the chillies.....

s a pedestrian you may have developed a view about BMW drivers. As an experienced road user, this view may well have been reinforced. Well here’s the latest news from the Institute of Personality and Social Research at the University of California; you’re entirely correct. The folk there have been studying manners “Fancy and wealth, and part of their research cars were involved pitting pedestrians against traffic. less likely At a busy pedestrian crossing they waited to stop” for cars to approach, and as the pedestrian guinea pig walked towards the crossing researchers noted which cars stopped and which continued on their way, intimidating the mere human into stopping short. They also monitored an intersection that had a stop sign at every entrance. These are common in the US and force every driver to stop, look around and wait their turn to proceed. The researchers noted which cars jumped their turn. They also recorded the sex and approximate age of each driver and the type of car involved. Was it an old banger or the latest model with an expensive badge? The cars were rated from one to five, with a one being a bit of a wreck and a five being a Mercedes, a BMW or something similar. Researcher Paul K. Piff published the results in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences last year. It’s a publication taken seriously indeed in (SUPPLIED)
scientific circles. It indicated that 80 per cent of drivers did the right thing. The interesting bit was totting up the scores in that rogue 20 per cent. Piff noted a “huge boost” in a driver’s likelihood to do the rude thing when he was behind the wheel of an expensive car. And he used the word “he” advisedly because male drivers were less likely to stop for pedestrians than females. Interestingly male and female drivers were more likely to stop for a female pedestrian than a male. “In our crosswalk study, none of the cars in the beaten-up category drove through the crosswalk; they always stopped for pedestrians,” Piff said. “But one of the most significant trends was that fancy cars were less likely to stop. BMW drivers were the worst.” They weren’t the only ones, of course. The other car singled out by the researchers as having drivers on the rude side was Toyota’s Prius. In the San Francisco Bay Area, where the research was carried out, the hybrid Prius is regarded as a status symbol driven by the environmentally conscious. “Prius drivers had a higher tendency to commit infractions than most,” Piff said. Still, they weren’t as bad as the BMWs, leading the hardy souls involved in the study to come up with their own little joke; despite having good brakes, a BMW usually stops with a jerk. \ reasdown@theweeklyreview.com.au
