Brothers spring into education project THE best business ideas are often thought up over a few beers and it was no different for Charles Davidson. Meeting up with a friend while working in Tokyo he was asked what he wanted to do with his life. His immediate response was that he wanted to set up his own business in natural hot springs. The taste for hot springs he developed in Japan had become a passion and eventually brought him back to the Mornington Peninsula to a special plot of land with geothermal properties. The venture came with great risk and expense, with more than $800,000 outlayed just to locate the hot bore, more than 600 metres below the surface. Now, more than 15 years after Mr Davidson purchased land in Rye with his brother Richard, Peninsula Hot Springs has become a tourism icon. A Tourism Quality grant of $100,000 recently announced by the federal government will allow

them to develop a bird sanctuary and wetlands. The wetlands area has always been part of the master plan for the hot springs and is the next stage in the development. When completed, the wetlands will become an educational tool for school groups to learn about natural habitats, as well as the geothermal properties of the area. Mr Davidson said the grant would expand on the work they had already done to reintroduce native flora to the area and embrace the natural environment. More than 20,000 indigenous plants have already been raised at the Peninsula Hot Springs’ own nursery. ‘‘The wetlands will enable us to take on more staff and will give us the foundation to build accommodation at the hot springs,’’ Mr Davidson said. Work would begin on the wetlands as soon as possible. ‘‘We have already planted more than 30,000 trees since we bought the site and this will allow us to continue to regenerate the area and reintroduce indigenous flora and fauna.’’
