BY JAMES TAYLOR ow long would it take you to create a miniopera? For 21 students at Nossal High School, it only took 21 hours. The group is in the final stages of preparing a 28-minute show, one of four created by schools in the WotOpera program to be staged in Dandenong on Friday. Besides stepping on stage, students in the music theatre education program wrote the libretto, composed the music and built the sets under the guidance of WotOpera artistic director Murray Dahm. Nossal’s performance features a murder in the first 30 seconds and also includes a pompous detective, an undertaker who can talk to the dead. The themes include unrequited love and jealousy. The group held a dress rehearsal for their fellow pupils on Tuesday. Assistant principal Toni Meath said the students — from years 9 to 11 — volunteered for the four-day intensive program held at the school over four weeks and cast the lead roles themselves. ‘‘These aren’t necessarily our dramatic students, so this has uncovered some talent. It’s really inclusive, it brings the best out of the kids.’’

Murderous intent: Nossal High School students rehearse their mini-opera. WotOpera project assistant Steph Acraman said the students had few rules to follow other than respecting each other on stage. ‘‘They’ve scripted and written everything. It’s an incredible creation, and much better than anything we adults could come up with ourselves.’’ Albert Park, Kilbreda and Melbourne high schools are also in the program this year. WotOpera is a spin-off of the Artology not-for-
