On the outer, in every sense BY TARA MURRAY and LAURA LITTLE

‘Always delay and no connectivity’ FRUSTRATED north-west commuters are demanding the completion of a train station in Caroline Springs, saying they are sick of lengthy waits and infrequent bus services. The issue of lack of public transport in the north-west, particularly in Caroline Springs, was raised again by the Melton Council and Keilor Labor MP Natalie Hutchins at last Wednesday’s meeting of interface councils. Caroline Springs commuter Michael Matalewski, who uses public transport up to four times a week to get to the city, said commuters were fed up. ‘‘Not only do we not feel safe because the bus shelters are constantly graffitied, but we also can’t rely on the system because there are always delays with bus and no connectivity in Watergardens to trains,’’ he said. ‘‘The state government is always encouraging people to use public transport, but I know a lot of university students like myself are opting to drive our cars instead because it takes more than an hour just to get to the city.’’

Ms Hutchins called for the government to finish the stalled Caroline Springs project. The government shelved plans in May 2011 after the previous government’s preliminary works at the south end of Christies Road began in late 2010. ‘‘The station was to include a bus stop, taxi rank and pedestrian and bicycle paths. The fact that Caroline Springs station hasn’t been built is a

big deterrent,’’ Ms Hutchins said, adding that bus services were infrequent and poorly connected. Caroline Springs resident Goran Kesic said poor transport was hampering lifestyles. ‘‘My son is studying at university in the city because there isn’t a university in Melton and he catches a bus to Sunshine then a train to the city then a tram to university.’’ — Melissa Cunningham

had one site purchased this year for a school and no funding for the school itself. There’s been no word on future funding for schools in the area.’’ Mr Tori said there were limited secondary school places for children in the north-west, and a lack of transport services meant children were travelling up to 30 minutes to get to school.

It also showed a shortage in education from kindergarten through to university and TAFE. Melton Council CEO Kel Tori said transport and education were among the biggest issues facing the city. ‘‘Melton has big issues around education. We had only one new school funded in the last budget. We’ve only

people in the labour force in interface areas, compared to metropolitan Melbourne, which has one job for every person. It also showed shortages in hospital beds, with 11 beds for every 10,000 residents in interface areas compared to metropolitan Melbourne , which has 30 beds for every 10,000 people.

MORE than $9.8 billion is needed to address a lack of infrastructure and services in Melbourne’s growth areas, including Melton, according to a new report. The report, One Melbourne or Two?, released by the 10 ‘interface councils’ which form a ring around outer Melbourne, says the state government is in danger of creating ‘‘two Melbournes’’. The councils, including Melton, Wyndham and Hume, say there is a significant negative gap in service delivery and infrastructure compared to areas in inner Melbourne, which needs to be addressed with funding. While the suggested $9.8 billionplus figure over 15 years would fund only half of the municipalities’ needs, the interface councils say it would be a good start. Hume mayor Geoff Porter, who spoke on behalf of the councils, said the funding would give residents access to basic services. ‘‘It shows that, compared to metropolitan Melbourne, our municipalities are subjected to lower average incomes and poorer education and health outcomes. ‘‘There are higher levels of unemployment, especially for our young people, which is coupled with high levels of youth non-engagement and low levels of education and work [opportunities]. It’s critical that there be timely investment in infrastructure and services.’’ The councils commissioned the updated report after receiving just 18 per cent of funding from the state government in last year’s budget, despite having one-third of Melbourne’s population. The report found there was one job for every two

Thieves stoop to new lows PLAY equipment valued at about $35,000 has been stolen from six children’s playgrounds in Brimbank in recent weeks. Equipment has been stolen from Lagoon Reserve in Keilor Village; Calder Rise in Keilor; Lakes Reserve in Taylors Lakes; Isabella Williams Memorial Reserve in Deer Park; Duke Street Reserve in Sunshine North; Bon Thomas Reserve in Adeline Court, Deer Park; and Packard Street in Keilor Downs. Many large playground items, including basket and hammock swings, have been stolen or damaged beyond repair. ‘‘To rob children of their playground is disgusting and the perpetrators need to be caught,’’ Brimbank Council CEO Bill Jaboor said. ‘‘Some of this equipment is fairly substantial in size, so it’s not being taken without some preparation and without being noticed.’’ He said while council would replace equipment, residents were urged to report suspicious behaviour to police. — Helen Grimaux

For a while, all roads lead to Keilor ROADS are the reason we have local governments, and March marks the start of celebrations of the 150th anniversary of roads transforming the mid-19th century encampment called Keilor into a 21st century city. The Keilor Road District Board was set up after a petition was sent to the state government in November 1862 by an aspiring group of local landowners. Declaration of the ‘road board’ was published in the Victorian Gazette on November 7, 1862. On March 1 at 2.45pm, Keilor Historical Society, in conjunction with Brimbank Council, will launch a year of commemorative dates to observe ‘Keilor 150, a Community’s Journey’. The launch will include more than 60 exhibits and special performances at the Old Shire Hall on the Old Calder Highway. RSVP by Thursday to Dana Moran, 0432 947 510. — Helen Grimaux

Finished business: Vice-Admiral Griggs presents Mr Barclay with his awards and commendation.

Picture: Shawn Smits

Service medals settle old score BY HELEN GRIMAUX NAVY chief, Vice-Admiral Ray Griggs was in Caroline Springs on Saturday to clear up unfinished business dating back more than 40 years. Vietnam veteran and Caroline Springs resident Robert Barclay was a clearance diver who worked to identify and remove explosives threatening Australian and United States vessels between 1968 and 1970. Mr Barclay and his team dove in the murky and polluted waters of South Vietnam’s harbours and river estuaries, often working almost

blind to detect live explosives attached to the hulls of warships. Due to an administrative oversight by the Australian Navy, members of the RAN clearance diving team 3 were not advised of their commendations until recently. While his mates received their long-overdue awards a couple of years ago, Mr Barclay was not in Australia at the time. So, 43 years on, it was time to settle a very important score. Vice-Admiral Griggs presented Mr Barclay with the Australian Defence Medal, the Australian Service Medal and the Australian Active

Service Medal at a special ceremony at the office of federal Gorton Labor MP Brendan O’Connor. Mr Barclay was also presented with a US Navy commendation for his explosives clearance work with US crews during the Vietnam War. “Clearance diving is amongst the most dangerous work in any defence force. Clearly, Robert is a man of incredible strength, resilience and great mental fortitude,” Mr O’Connor said. “He performed extraordinary work for Australia and we’re extremely grateful for his bravery.”

Help sought over hit-run PICTURE: CATHY JACKSON

HEALTH workers are calling for two new hepatitis C treatments to be added to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme as infection rates in the western suburbs increase. Staff from Hepatitis Victoria, St Vincents Hospital’s Werribee hepatitis clinic, Footscray-based primary care service Healthworks and the Sexual Health, HIV and Hepatitis Education Program used a roundtable discussion earlier this month to urge the federal government to make telaprevir and boceprevir available on the PBS. Latest data from Hepatitis Victoria reveals that Brimbank has the fourth-highest infection rate in Victoria, returning 65.5 positive tests per 100,000 people in the 12 months to August 2012. Maribyrnong was third with 68.6 positive tests per 100,000. Melton, Wyndham and Hume also had large populations of at-risk groups. Western Health hepatitis C service nurse consultant Sally Watkinson believes high infection rates could be attributed to a growing population and high rates of chronic disease. ‘‘We are talking about a demographic which already has a high burden of chronic disease and a rapidly growing population,’’ she said. ‘‘It’s also a low-socioeconomic community, with a culturally diverse population in need of more health education and understanding of treatments available.’’ Ms Watkinson said Western Health held free clinics every Tuesday night at Footscray hospital for marginalised people infected with the disease, including drug users, culturally diverse groups, youth and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents. She said the new treatments needed to be added to the PBS to reduce the number of people waiting for treatment and the number of those at risk of suffering permanent liver damage. Alex Thompson, head of hepatology research at St Vincents Hospital, said it had been running a hepatitis clinic at Werribee Mercy Hospital for eight months and had noticed an increase in patients asking about telaprevir and boceprevir. He said hepatitis infections could cause liver failure and liver cancer and were the most common

Brimbank police are appealing for information on a hit-run incident in Sunshine. A Sunshine man, 41, was walking across the road at City Place when he was struck by a red Commodore at 3.30pm last Tuesday. Police said there were four men inside the vehicle, which sped off after the incident. The man suffered minor injuries and has been released from Sunshine Hospital.

Man stabbed in St Albans Detectives are seeking witnesses to a stabbing in St Albans. A Werribee man, 28, was walking with his bike along Alfrieda Street at 1.40pm last Tuesday when he became involved in a verbal altercation with a man and a woman. The man then produced a knife and allegedly stabbed the victim to the upper body, causing serious internal injuries. The victim was rushed to the Royal Melbourne Hospital for emergency surgery and was in a stable condition. Police said the attacker was of Caucasian appearance and in his late 40s.

Health push: Alex Thompson and Hepatitis Victoria CEO Melanie Eagle want new treatments available on the PBS.

The new treatments are doubling [cure] rates’ cause of transplants in Australia. ‘‘The treatment we have at the moment is OK, with a 40-50 per cent cure rate. The new treatments are doubling [cure] rates,’’ Dr Thompson said. Rose Coulter, who lived with hepatitis C for more than 40 years, said she was disappointed the new drugs were not available in Australia. Ms Coulter underwent treatment four years ago and is now free

of the virus. She describes her six months of treatment with interferon as a difficult time in her life, after experiencing pyschological side effects. ‘‘By week 12 I was homicidal and suicidal. I can understand why people don’t complete treatment. I thought the treatment worse than the disease.’’ She said making the new treatments available on the PBS would mean fewer people would have to experience what she went through. ‘‘I would like see interferon phased out and the early introduction of the new therapies which have less side effects. I feel very strongly that we need to have access to new virals.’’ Prime Minister and Lalor MP Julia Gillard said the drugs had been approved by the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee and the government was negotiating a price for the treatments and conducting quality and availability checks.

Police have identified a Melton man, 37, who died in hospital after being hit by a truck in Braybrook last Wednesday. His family has been notified.

Trio on drug charges Brimbank detectives have charged three people after executing a warrant at a house in Lobelia Grove, Cairnlea. A Caroline Springs man, 31, a St Albans man, 37, and a 45-year-old man of no fixed address were charged after police seized more than 300 cannabis plants with a street value of $300,000. The trio were also charged with theft of electricity and other drug offences.

Cold store workers fight for fairer pay BY GOYA DMYTRYSHCHAK WAREHOUSE workers at a Laverton distribution centre could be headed for industrial action after learning they are among the lowest paid in Melbourne. Packers and forklift drivers at the Polar Fresh Coles Laverton Distribution Centre are paid a base rate of $23.81 per hour — $6.35 less than those doing similar work for Woolworths in Broadmeadows and $5.37 below IGA cold store workers in Laverton. Unlike their counterparts, Polar Fresh workers do not receive shift loadings for their whole shift. They are also paid less than those doing similar work supplying Coles in other parts of Melbourne. Versacold at Laverton, which supplies Coles and Woolworths, pays a base rate of $27.40 per hour after 18 months and full shift loadings, while an Eastern Creek distribution centre for Coles pays $28.72 per hour and penalties for a whole shift. National Union of Workers organiser Matt Toner said Polar Fresh workers were fighting for the same respect as other Coles workers. ‘‘Our campaign is really just about justice and respect and it’s about making sure that these

workers who work equally as hard as those other Coles workers — in, some would say, a more difficult environment, they’re in a cold environment — that they get treated with the same respect that other Coles workers get. ‘‘If you work afternoon shift — that starts at 1pm and finishes at 9pm — you are only paid the loadings for the last three hours and that’s not the industry standard. ‘‘We’re obviously trying to resolve this before it gets to strike or industrial action.’’ Kealba single mother Kelly Gibbs said she was among those worst affected. Part of the pay from her afternoon shift is spent on a babysitter for her primary-school age son. ‘‘I’m a single parent basically just trying to make ends meet. I’m the only person who brings an income into the household. ‘‘We all enjoy working at Polar Fresh — you know, it’s a good environment, we’re all like one big family. It’s just being paid lower wages compared to everybody else.’’ Deer Park’s Tam Nguyen said a lot of employees were shocked to realise they were among the lowest paid warehouse workers. Polar Fresh did not respond before the Weekly went to print.

At last, fairness for fireys

About time: Margaret Urch supports moves to improve access to compensation for sick firefighters. Picture: Darren Howe

BY MELISSA CUNNINGHAM and DAN MOSS MARGARET Urch’s life was changed forever in February 1997. Her husband and Sunshine firefighter Rodney died after being diagnosed with liver cancer in 1996, leaving behind Ms Urch and two children then aged 12 and 14. He was 42. Fellow firefighters rallied in support of Mr Urch as he fought for his life, even offering to donate their sick days as his own dried up. After his death Ms Urch spent years fighting for compensation for her family, but her claims were never successful because she could not prove the cancer was caused by his working conditions. Last week Ms Urch welcomed the introduction of an upper house bill that would give Victorian firefighters compensation if they contract specific cancers after a set number of years. The time period differs depending on the cancer. ‘‘The life of my family was irreparably changed when Rod died,’’ Ms

Urch said. ‘‘He died just as our kids were starting to be teenagers and become their own people.’’ She said she knew of many of Mr Urch’s colleagues who had died or been diagnosed with cancer in the years following his death. ‘‘I think this bill is fantastic because it would compensate young families that are left without their father or mother.’’ The bill was introduced by Western Metropolitan Greens MP Colleen Hartland to support firefighters who contract cancer and other workrelated diseases. Upper house president Bruce Atkinson said more investigation was needed to ensure the bill did not break section 62 of the Constitution Act 1975, which bans upper house bills from imposing a tax or “impost”. But Ms Hartland said the government could fix the situation and “copy and paste” the bill to introduce it in the lower house. Former CFA chief Brian Potter said he and many of his colleagues had battled insurers to get compensation

for cancers. “One of the dilemmas is that unless you can quote exactly the incident that you were at, and precisely the materials that were burning . . . you find [yourself] at a critically difficult period,” he said. Firefighters employed on federal sites, such as airports, have had laws changed that give compensation for cancers known to have been caused by smoke and fumes. Peter Marshall, of the United Firefighters Union, said it was a “ludicrous situation” that airport firefighters were protected while others were not, even if they were fighting the same fire. Opposition emergency services spokeswoman Jacinta Allan appeared with firefighters outside Parliament and said “the science is in” on the causes of firefighters’ cancers. Assistant treasurer Gordon RichPhillips said a Monash University study into the matter was under way, adding the government would consider if action was necessary once the study was completed.

Nod to builders has gallery in uproar

CATS lurking in neighbours’ backyards, dogs having run-ins with other dogs, and an assortment of other issues will be discussed at a series of public sessions over the next few weeks. The sessions will be run by Brimbank Council to develop its new domestic animal management plan. The aim would be to strike a balance between pet owners and the rest of the community — that is, have clear enough laws but leave just enough wiggle room so that things are up to scratch for cats, and dogs can get on with their doggy lives. Brimbank and Melton councils have had a number of very serious issues with some dog owners. The new plan will assess services and programs, including off-leash parks, and cover dangerous breeds. New ideas and community input is sought. Sessions will be held on: ■ Monday, February 25, 6.30pm at

BRIMBANK Council has approved two contentious housing applications in Deer Park and Ardeer. There was uproar from members of the gallery at last Tuesday’s planning meeting after administrators unanimously approved an application for three double-storey dwellings in Yallourn Street, Ardeer. The application drew seven objections from residents, who argued the buildings would be detrimental to the neighbourhood character, cause overshadowing, and create an influx of traffic and parking issues. One dwelling will have three bedrooms and a single garage. The other two will include two bedrooms and a single garage. Resident Andre Hamilton said most residents in the street were families or elderly residents. ‘‘The council needs to have a duty of care to the elderly community and the families who live in this street permanently,’’ he said.

‘‘By allowing this overdevelopment to go ahead there will be cars all over the place. Our once-quiet neighbourhood will be full of noise pollution from those additional cars, not to mention the overshadowing it will cause for the house beside, in front and behind the development.’’ Administrators also approved a permit for two double-storey houses and one single storey dwelling in Montasell Avenue, Deer Park. Fifteen objections were received, with residents voicing concerns over loss of privacy, overcrowding and increased traffic flow. Resident George Hebertson told the meeting the development had the potential to ruin their way of life, and some residents had lived there more than 57 years. Brimbank chairman John Watson said both applications were in line with the council’s housing strategy and promoted a housing market that met the needs of the community. — Melissa Cunningham

Demolish my house, says owner BY ANDRIA COZZA

Concerns building: Earl Softley is taking action against his builder.

Picture: Shawn Smits

MORE than 100 north-west homeowners have sought legal advice about serious building cracks said to have been caused by shifting soil. ‘Slab heave’ occurs when reactive soil swells and contracts with changing moisture levels, causing cracking and twisting in affected houses. Slater & Gordon is preparing to represent Arnolds Creek homeowner Earl Softley at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal in a case that will be watched with keen interest by Victoria’s home-building industry. It’s claimed the issues have been caused by an incorrect classification of volatile soil conditions. Lawyer Robert Auricchio said the Softley case was significant and, if successful, would be the first time VCAT had ordered a house to be demolished and rebuilt. The Softleys are claiming damages, interest and costs of $259,729. A directions hearing is scheduled for February 28.

Mr Softley said his experience was not unique to the western suburbs. He said that since speaking out, a number of Melton residents had contacted him and spoke of similar experiences. ‘‘It is a concern for everybody in the community. It jeopardises house values,’’ he said. Mr Softley said he and his wife were devastated. ‘‘It’s hard to say whether we would ever build with a company again. It has instilled a lot of fear and worry in us. ‘‘Buying a house is one of the biggest investments you make.’’ A Building Commission spokesman said it had received one complaint about slab heave last year. He said affected homeowners were encouraged to work with their builder to rectify the issue. ‘‘If the homeowner and builder are not able to come to a comfortable agreement, the matter can be escalated through Building Advice and Conciliation Victoria or the VCAT.”

Come Fly with me

As Melbourne prepares for the Avalon Airshow, Mark Smith shows how the city’s west is a haven for people who want to get their feet off the ground for a flight of fancy

T

en kilometres to the west of Werribee lies a small airfield that’s home to an unusual aircraft. While a Jetstar Airbus flies overhead, inbound to Avalon, a small engine roars as a strange-looking cart with two people on board moves forward, attached to a large parachute that fills with air. Inside, pilot Steve Conte is introducing potential student Darryl Deller to the joys of flying an Aerochute. A short run along the bumpy runway and the cart, which looks ungainly on the ground, lifts off and heads skywards, suddenly gaining a smooth grace like a soaring bird. Conte has been operating from the strip for 15 years, teaching people to fly the Aerochute aircraft his company builds in Coburg. “We get a lot of people who just want to have a try flying in something that’s

different. It’s an unusual, but very safe, way to get into the air,’’ Conte says. ‘‘It’s a lot of fun and very easy to fly. You can’t stall them or spin them, and if you have an engine failure you just parachute slowly down to the ground.” At the end of his half-hour flight, Deller agrees. “It’s fantastic. You get up there and have the wind in your face. You look down and realise there’s nothing between you and the ground except the seat you’re sitting on. “It’s certainly very adventurous. I’ve never done anything like this before. Steve’s a great pilot. He let me take the controls, which I didn’t expect.” Another potential student, Jodie Wood, of Bonbeach, was equally impressed with her Aerochute experience. “It was like being on a flying motorbike just above the ground. My favorite part was watching the kangaroos as we flew above them.

February 19, 2013

“It’s definitely a thrill, but a very comfortable thrill. The seat is like sitting in your lounge chair.” At RAAF Williams, Point Cook, a slightly more traditionallooking aeroplane allows adventurous passengers the chance to step back in time and fly in a 1941 Tiger Moth trainer. Garry Herne operates Vintage Tiger Moth Joyflights. When he’s not piloting the silver biplane he’s owned for 12 years, he’s an international airline captain on an Airbus A330. “People love the feeling of stepping back to a more romantic era of flying,” says Herne as he readies his classic aircraft. “The fact that the aeroplane is still fully certified despite being built in 1941 gives my passengers confidence when it comes

to doing aerobatics, which most customers choose in their flight.” Sarah Smith, of Wyndham Vale was awed by her aerobatic flight in the Tiger Moth. “That’s amazing. I’m shaking. It’s insane, my goodness. I’m actually speechless. “I’d definitely recommend it to my friends. If I can do it anyone can do it. It’s really cool, being in the open air.”

For those who want a more intense flight experience, Herne also owns a Yak 52 – a former Russian military trainer built in 1991. The Yak can expose those who want a highenergy thrill to over 5G (five times their body weight) during aerobatics. “The Yak allows people to enjoy a huge adrenaline rush as they experience the sort of aerobatics they see at airshows like Avalon,” says Herne. Bacchus Marsh airfield holds the distinction of hosting three gliding clubs, making it the largest gliding operation in Australia with 18 club gliders and a combined membership of more than 200. Geelong Gliding Club is the oldest, having formed in 1929, there’s also the Victorian Motorless Flight Group and the Beaufort Gliding Club. Geelong club member Spiro Mallia started flying at Bacchus Marsh in 1982. He is passionate about engineless flight. “Gliding to me is free flight,” says Mallia. “It’s the experience of soaring, being carried up by the forces of nature and being able to use that to fly across country. It’s the nearest thing to a magic carpet. “When I’m gliding I thinking about controlling the aircraft, looking around for other aircraft and simply enjoying the view. I’ve been flying for 30 years and I never get tired of it. “Bacchus Marsh is a well-kept airfield close to Melbourne. It’s a real asset for the western suburbs.’’ Malia says a combination of flat ground and hills around the airport give the area lift yearround. And flying in a club atmosphere is a great way to learn to fly and meet like-minded people.

amazing. I’m shaking. It’s insane, “That’s

my goodness. I’m actually

speechless”

“We try and be as welcoming as we can to visitors, so we go out of our way to greet people who might be interested. There are a range of ways people can come here and try gliding. They can just try a passenger flight or join the club for a weekend and receive a number of instructional flights.” His advice to people who have always wanted to fly? Act on your dream. “Come along and do it. You don’t even have to call. If it’s reasonable weather we are out here.” Heading north, Kyneton airfield has a strong club tradition of fostering recreational aviation. The small but busy flying school allows locals to achieve their dream of flight, and the neat line of hangars is home to about 50 private planes. Norm Edmunds is a long-term member at the Kyneton Aero Club. His flying machine is a homebuilt Corby Starlet that gestated in his garage over a six-year period. “You don’t so much fly the Corby as wear it when you are airborne! It’s a personal fighter plane,” Edmunds says after a Sunday morning blast around the patch. Kyneton Aero Club president Matt Henderson sees his job as an opportunity to help the airfield grow while still keeping neighbours happy. “For a long time we were invisible to the

4

local council,” says Henderson. “Members from years gone by felt that was a good thing. But such an arrangement can be a double-edged sword for a flying club. There is the element of out-of-sight, out-of-mind. “We had some problems last year when the council discovered it had this asset and no real plan for what to do with it. “A number of plans appeared, from close the airfield to develop the airfield. Thankfully after a campaign by aviation groups the council saw the value in keeping a local landing ground viable in a community context. So we are still here for the next 15 years”. I

Guy to reveal development payment measures BY HELEN GRIMAUX PLANNING Minister Matthew Guy has called on councils to help “standardise” the contributions system that funds roads, footpaths, storm water systems, parks, sports grounds and playgrounds. It comes after he publicly reprimanded a senior adviser over comments she made late last year about sharing infrastructure costs for growth areas among all Victorians. Professor Roz Hansen’s comments set off a wave of reaction about how to meet the demands of a seemingly ever-sprawling residential market. ‘‘Some of us live in established suburbs where the infrastructure that’s in the ground was paid by our forefathers . . . I think it’s our turn now to start helping the growth areas and the outer areas pay for their infrastructure,’’ she said, citing one option as a charge based on a property’s net annual value. Mr Guy reacted swiftly. ‘‘It must be remembered that development contributions are not paid by the developer; they are paid by the home buyer,’’ he said. ‘‘So when councils talk about getting more out of development

contributions, they are not screwing the developer; they are screwing the home buyer and that is something this government will not put up with.’’ Two months later, the minister has invited councils to a briefing on a report by the standard development contributions ministerial advisory committee. This report, he said, highlights key areas of the government’s proposed new development contributions system, including a list of allowable items for categories of infrastructure and alternative types of development. “A standard levy will assist all councils in funding infrastructure more efficiently by providing a list of items that can be funded in a range of development contexts,” Mr Guy said. He said a new framework that standardised levies charged against developers would ensure funding for infrastructure that supported new communities was in place at the same time as large-scale subdivisions were allowed. The briefing will be held tomorrow. Melton Council representatives will attend. Brimbank has indicated it, too, supports a less complex system.

Many players, one goal More than 2000 soccer enthusiasts flocked to this year’s Brimbank Cup, watching 72 games between local players, police and celebrities. Seventeen teams took part in the event at Keilor Park Soccer Club on February 9-10. The cup competition, launched following an African Nations tournament in 2011, was attended by SBS TV football analysts Les Murray, Craig Foster, David Zdrilic and David Basheer, who took part in a celebrity match and conducted a clinic for an eager group of under-15 players. The competition ended on Sunday in a nail-biting finish, with Cairnlea’s women’s side coming from 2-0 behind to overcome Keilor Park, 3-2. In the men’s final, Westvale defeated North Sunshine Eagles, 2-0. Brimbank Council chairman John Watson said it was a ‘‘magnificent multicultural event’’.

POSITIVE role models are needed to help young adults in Melton as part of an innovative program that teaches vital life skills. As part of Salvation Army Westcare’s Lead Tenant program, mentors will share a fully furnished four-bedroom house, rent and utility fee free, with young people in Kurunjang. The program is aimed at preparing young adults to live independently, with mentors passing on skills like budgeting, cooking and socialising while remaining a responsible tenant. Caroline Springs vet and Lead Tenant volunteer Bronwen Slack says being involved is rewarding and exciting. She says the experience has opened her mind to ‘‘what the real world is like’’. Ms Slack moved to Australia from South Africa to study seven years ago and maintains her active lifestyle working and going to dance classes. “Growing up in a situation where you haven’t been exposed to

adversity, it makes you realise that there are people out there who need your help, and that you can contribute in a meaningful way.’’ Reasons young people are placed in the program can include family illness or crisis, relationship conflict, abuse, abandonment or mental health and substance abuse issues. Program manager Ralph Salera says the Kurunjang program will be the fourth in the western region. Westcare needs four new lead tenants who can continue with their everyday life while modelling mature living skills. Lead tenants, who are helped financially, must be over 21 and prepared to make a 12-month commitment. More details: 9312 3544 or westcarewecare.org.au. — Andria Cozza

PROFILE ●

Escape from killing fields Hip-hop pair sell a message of peace and chasing dreams, writes Melissa Cunningham ablice Manirakiza isn’t your typical rapper. Unlike many of his contemporaries, the East African, Burundi-born refugee and Sunshine resident chooses to rap about peace, love and freedom — the things he values most in life. Making up one side of the Flybz hip-hop duo, Fablice, 19, has performed with his nephew Florene, 15, or G-Storm as he’s known on stage, since arriving in Australia in 2007. It is a way of healing from their harrowing past. Fablice was 11 when he was kidnapped and trained as a child soldier after his parents were killed during the country’s civil war. ‘‘Life in Africa was extremely hard,’’ he says. ‘‘When young people complain here I just think, how could you complain about life here. This is paradise. I was stolen from my home, given a gun, some bullets and taught to fight.

F

‘I didn’t realise there was a life for me outside of that world.’’ Fablice spent more than two years training as a soldier. Shortly before he was to go into battle he escaped after bribing a taxi driver to take him to the Tanzanian border. But without his parents there to support him he turned to drugs as a way to cope with his pain, until his sister found him. ‘‘She took me to the [refugee] camp and we lived there for three years with no power or clean water or sanitation, and barely any food. Our freedom came in our arrival to Australia.’’ After arriving here, Fablice and Florene were taught English at a language centre before enrolling in Westall Secondary College, which Florene still attends. ‘‘It was really tough at first,’’ Fablice says. ‘‘We were the only Burundi

refugees at school so we kind of stood out. But we have always looked out for each other.’’ The duo recently returned from a trip to Africa, and they plan on raising the profile of their homeland through their music. The teenagers have started performing in schools across the country, sharing their story. They also performed at last year’s Moomba festival and at the Sydney Opera House. ‘‘We want to educate young Australians,’’ Fablice says. ‘‘We don’t want to sing about nightclubs and bitches. We want to push our message of peace and chasing your dreams.” For details of Flybz’ new album, Just Passing Through, email fablicemusic@hotmail.com

In one memorable sequence, a daring horse race is conducted on stage with the riders appearing and disappearing behind the curtains. When a rider falls, he lands hard on the theatre floor, his horse dying at the audience’s feet. These sequences are as puzzling as they are striking. constraints — everything is just for show, after all. But we have to wonder if Wright is wise to remind us that his cast is merely actors, given that the rarely convincing Keira Knightley is his leading lady. As it is, Knightley gives one of her strongest performances yet, though her Anna remains a little too icy for us to truly engage with. Like his star, Wright’s film is pretty but aloof and oddly bloodless for a story rooted in deep passions.

TRIPPING

All aboard for abundant food and fun Vanuatu and Noumea, South Pacific cruise Getting there: Fly Melbourne to Sydney then board Radiance of the Seas More details: royalcaribbean.com.au

BY REBECCA MILLER efore departing on a cruise there are many things you’re told to bring: sea sickness tablets (just in case . . . I was fine) clothing for ‘formal nights’, snorkel, etcetera. What’s not mentioned is a huge appetite. I’ve never seen or eaten as much food as I did while cruising the South Pacific in December. Buffet breakfast and lunch daily, and, let’s not forget the three-course dinners available, or another buffet, or dining at one of the speciality restaurants (paid). The range of food wasn’t the only thing that impressed my fellow travellers and I — there’s plenty to keep everyone occupied. On cruise days travellers can do as little or as much as they like. The ship I was on —Radiance of the Seas — had a rock climbing wall, mini golf, basketball court, jogging track, fitness centre, multiple pools and bars, a nightclub, cinema, theatre, library, board games area, casino and shops. There are also separate baby and teen rooms.

B

Ship to shore: Radiance of the Seas was a delight to be on.

For most of my 11-day cruise we were island hopping from Noumea and Isle of Pines in New Caledonia to Lifou (Loyalty Island) and Mystery Island, Champagne Bay and Vila in Vanuatu. ‘Tender boats’ took everyone back and forth to

If that’s not enough there are organised daily activities, including trivia, Suduko challenges, dance classes, cooking demonstrations, bingo and scavenger hunts. And that’s just for the four days at sea.

each island. Multiple trips allow passengers to stay as long as they like, just make sure you’re back in time to depart! With the water temperature at most islands the same as outside, it’s a pleasure to dive into the sparkling ocean. Snorkelling is recommended and we saw colourful coral, clown fish, stingrays and turtles. There are also city, cultural, fishing and waterfall tours if swimming is not your thing. Neither my fellow travellers nor I could complain about service on board, and all staff were friendly and helpful. As for accommodation, you get what you pay for. Corolla gets an infusion of style Ewan Kennedy road tests Toyota’s updated evergreen orollas have long had a reputation for being sensible, logical buys that are on the boring side — until now. Toyota’s new chief, Akio Toyoda, didn’t like the ‘boring but sensible’ tag being given to his company’s products so he suggested to designers and engineers that more character might be nice. From a styling point of view, the 11th generation Corolla is right up to date, with a clean front where the lights and grille blend neatly and in the side view which has a real Euro look. Australians are showing a strong preference for small passenger vehicles rather than the large family sixes they used to love with a passion. The Mazda3 has been at the top of the sales tree for two years but is getting on in years and Toyota wouldn’t mind a tilt at the crown. Nissan Australia is also in the race with its allnew Pulsar. Toyota and Nissan have both priced their entry-level models at $19,990. When the big three car makers start to get really serious about maximising sales, buyers are the real winners. These cars are all very well

C

priced, but you may still be able to squeeze another few dollars out of the transaction. New Toyota Corolla is powered by a 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine that’s based on the one used in the outgoing model. It has significant changes to improve power and torque characteristics and reduce fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. The car wasn’t as economical as we anticipated, typically using nine to 11 litres per hundred kilometres in heavy-duty driving around town. Handling of the new Corolla is excellent, all the more so when you remember it’s a family hatchback with no pretensions to sportiness. The electrically assisted power steering is nicely weighted and gives good feedback. Comfort on poor roads isn’t as good as on previous Corollas due to the sporting revisions to the car’s character. Toyota’s Corolla has been a favourite in Australia for almost five decades. We see no reason why our love affair with this car shouldn’t be every bit as strong as in the previous 10 generations.

‘Boring’ no more: Corolla has more style, and people seem to like it like that.

KEILORGIFT

THE coveted Keilor Gift trophy will spend another 12 months interstate after invader Richard Hankin stormed to victory in the Victorian Athletic League 120-metre foot race at Keilor Recreation Reserve on Saturday night. The trophy took a trip to the Apple Isle last year after Tasmanian speedster Andrew Robinson claimed the spoils, but it will head in a different direction this time with Hankin lugging the major prize back to NSW. It was a fairytale result for Hankin, who has lived with the fact his second place at the 2008 Stawell Gift was as close as he had ever come to winning a Gift in his career. ‘‘He was elated,’’ former Keilor Gift starter Matthew Webster told the Weekly. ‘‘It was his first Gift win in his running career. He came down here with expectations of making the final and certainly went home with a bonus.’’ Hankin, who ran off a handicap of six metres, won in a time of 12.67 seconds, ahead of veteran and former Keilor Gift winner Craig Mair and Melton South’s Rhys Parkinson.

120m Keilor Gift: Richard Hankin (NSW). 120m women’s gift: Maddison Coates (Hurstbridge). 1600m backmarkers: Arron Downes (Airport West). 1600m frontmarkers: Andrew Soltys (Brunswick West). 800m womens: Olivia Goder (Rowville). 800m open: James Deane (Ringwood North). 400m womens: Megan McMahon (North Sunshine). 400m novice: Matt Mather (Caroline Springs). 300m veterans: Marita Downes (Airport West). 70m open: Rhys Parkinson (Melton South). U20 120m: Jessica Farrugia (Broadford)

Mair, who ran off 13.75 metres, led most of the way and appeared to be coasting to the finish line. But Hankin finished the stronger, winning by a slim margin. ‘‘He [Mair] controlled the race up until the last 15 metres,’’ Webster said. ‘‘He thought he had it run and won. Unfortunately for him, Richard came home a lot stronger and beat him.’’ Parkinson had the best form of any runner in the field. The local entrant had dominated most of his events during the Christmas/New Year period and even took the honours in the

70-metre open race earlier in the day. But he had to settle for third. ‘‘Rhys won the Latrobe Gift and the Burnie 400 over in Tasmania and came back here to Victoria and won the Wangaratta Gift and won the Albury 400,’’ Webster said. The backmarker of the Gift was Bola Lawal, a former Olympian who ran off a handicap of 0.5 metres. There was much interest surrounding the Nigerian, who returned to sprinting after a twoyear ban for returning a positive test at the IAAF Melbourne Track Classic in 2010. Lawal could not overcome the big handicap, failing to get out of his heat. The 120-metre women’s gift was taken out by teenage sensation Maddison Coates. An amateur state champion over the 400, Coates relished her six-metre handicap to win in a canter. ‘‘She came in here with a luxury handicap,’’ Webster said. ‘‘Knowing her form, she should never have been given six, but she took advantage of it and won by a country mile.’’ Coates, from Hurstbridge, won the final in 14.16 seconds from Lara Gambino (Parkdale) and Tara Domaschenz (Mount Clear).

Lions eye flag after tough win DEER Park-Ardeer has ‘‘unfinished business’’ to attend to in the Williamstown and District Cricket Association B1 turf. The Lions are going right way about their mission for a much-anticipated premiership. With a hard-fought victory over fellow finals contenders St John’s at the John McLeod Oval on Saturday, they moved into a powerful second position with one round to go before finals. Lions playing secretary Callum Kennedy told the Weekly it was a prime opportunity for his club’s first XI to put years of so close, yet so far, finishes behind them. ‘‘We’ve been close three of the last four years and we’re sick of not crossing the line,’’ he said. ‘‘This is our real chance.’’ The Lions win was emphatic on paper. They bowled the Saints out for just 95 and passed the score six down. But, in reality, it was much tougher than the scoreboard would indicate. A match-winning partnership from Ricky Suvada (61) and Jimmy Bonnici (20) got the Lions over the line. They combined when the score was precariously poised at 6-58 and brought it home. Suvada’s innings was one of control, leaving the good balls and pouncing on the bad ones. The Lions will visit second-last West Newport on Saturday, knowing a victory will lock in a home semi-final. — Lance Jenkinson

Late wicket jolts Crows

Gifted Hankin takes prized trophy north of the border BY LANCE JENKINSON

SUNSHINE suffered a late blow on day one of its clash with Malvern in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association at Dempster Park on Saturday. All the Crows had to do was see out one over before stumps after bowling the visitors out for 223, but there was a mishap in the form of a wicket and they finished on 1-2. Keilor can kiss its senior division finals hopes goodbye after a narrow first-innings road loss to ladder leader Greenvale. The Blues did their utmost to defend 183, but the Vales passed the total six down. In north A1, St Albans posted a mammoth 4-352 to crush Seddon’s 172, moving into the top four with a round to go.

Kara Olsen brought home the relay to edge out Diamond Valley, and leave the final tally 772.50 points for Keilor-St Bernards to Diamond Valley’s 751. The victory was KSB’s only title at Lakeside Stadium, with its men’s open division 2 finishing fourth, men’s over-40s fifth, men’s under-18s sixth, men’s under-16s fourth, men’s under-14s fourth, women’s division 1 sixth, women’s over40s fifth and women’s under-16s sixth. Olsen won the 80m hurdles and accumulated 121.50 points through long jump, 100m and 400m events. Ouch: Deer Park-Ardeer top-order batsman Matt Woodhouse takes one in the ribs.

Wrestler shocked at Olympic ‘exclusion’ BY LANCE JENKINSON WHILE wrestling’s possible exclusion from the 2020 Olympic Games was felt around the world, it caused barely a ripple in in Australia. Where it did reverberate was the western suburbs of Melbourne, with the sport of two of our Olympians, Farzad Tarash and Mark Anthony, in danger of being dismissed from the Summer Games in seven years. Tarash, 26, from Sydenham, is one of the rising stars of wrestling in this country. Born in Iran, he moved to Australia with his parents at the age of 12 and attended schools such as St Margaret’s Maribyrnong and Maribyrnong College. Unlike other sports, wrestling is not a full-time occupation, but it gave him the chance to succeed at university, where he graduated with a bachelor of applied sciences degree. And, like other sports, Tarash trains as if he is a full-time professional without the perks, all in the hope of standing on the podium with a gold medal dangling around his neck at the 2016 Olympics. Tarash was initially drawn to the sport because his father, Parviz, was a national champion in his native country. But there was more to the sport for Tarash than family links. ‘‘Everything about wrestling was interesting for me as a kid,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s physical, it involves technique and speed. It’s what a pure sport should have.’’ Tarash has grown up in the right era. He got the chance to represent Australia in London last year. The national and Oceania champion is confident he can stay on top of his game to reach Rio de Janeiro in three years’ time. Tarash’s disappointment with the notion that

wrestling could be dropped from all future Olympics is more to do with the next generation. ‘‘Definitely 2016 is my target,’’ he said, at which time he will be 30. ‘‘For 2020, I’m thinking more about the younger kids coming up now. ‘‘It’s disappointing to hear that some of their dreams could be shattered.’’ While wrestling is a relatively tiny sport in Australia, it is huge in other countries. It was one of the foundation sports of the ancient Olympics and was on the card at the first modern Olympics in 1896. ‘‘Wrestling is very popular around the world,’’ Tarash said. ‘‘It might not be that popular in Australia, but around the globe, it’s one of the most competed sports in the world. ‘‘At the Olympics, we have a lot of countries around the world competing and even when you look at the flag bearers at the Olympics, a lot of them are wrestlers. It’s basically one of the symbols of the Olympics.’’ When word got out that wrestling might be dropped for the 2020 Olympics in either Istanbul, Tokyo or Madrid, Tarash could not believe what he was hearing. ‘‘It came as a total shock,’’ he said. ‘‘Their [the International Olympic Committee] main reason was to modernise the games. ‘‘I’m still trying to get familiar with what they mean by modernise.’’ The final nail is still yet to be hammered in Olympic wrestling’s coffin. The sport will reapply for inclusion in 2020, but will be up against karate, squash, roller sports, sport climbing, wakeboarding, wushu (martial art) and a combined baseball and softball bid.

Cannons size up their list BY TEO PELLIZZERI A FRIDAY evening in February doesn’t have the same ring as One Day in September, but for a number of aspiring Calder Cannons players the stakes were just as high last week. The Cannons held their first organised game of pre-season training with an intra-club at Craigieburn’s Highgate Reserve, mainly consisting of bottom-age players. Few at the Cannons were expecting a 12-goal difference between the teams of trialling players. But the margin was not as relevant as the performances for players striving to break into this year’s TAC Cup team. The Cannons will now play double-header trials against Bendigo, Northern Knights and Western Jets before naming their final TAC Cup list early next month. About 20 top-age Cannons acted as boundary umpires as they ran laps of the ground, sizing up the candidates. Cannons coach Andrew Jago spent the match

patrolling the field, occasionally stopping the game to issue an instruction, but largely addressing players behind the play. ‘‘Most of our top-agers were deliberately rested. It’s really to try and gain some information on kids that are bottom age or new to the under18 program,’’ Jago said. ‘‘They’ve been selected because they’re standouts at local level, give them the chance to compete against players at the same level.’’ Jago said the players on the fringes of TAC Cup selection were well aware of the stakes heading into the practice-match series. ‘‘This will be part of our criteria to make decisions . . . we have a sports psych out here full time who spoke to them about their preparation. ‘‘It’s not purely instinctive yet, players are thinking things through. But at this stage of the season that’s understandable. The players’ job now is to make our life exceptionally difficult, and a few of them did tonight. But we’re a long way from finalising our list yet.’’

Big tick for preseason games BY LANCE JENKINSON THE second annual Brimbank Cup ticked all the boxes. Above all, the preseason tournament promotes peace and harmony, uniting the vast multicultural elements of the area. The quality of football on show was an added bonus. ‘‘Everyone enjoyed themselves,’’ Keilor Park Soccer Club president Paul Portelli said. ‘‘It was a good crowd on both the Saturday and the Sunday – good games all round and good finals as well.’’ The preseason of two clubs received a significant boost as the recipients of the cups. Westvale Olympic surprised on the men’s side by taking out the title. Cairnlea, the top-ranked side in the women’s draw, kept with the form book, but not without a scare. Olympic got its hands on the cup with a resounding 3-0 win in the final over North Sunshine Eagles at Keilor Park Reserve. Portelli was impressed with Olympic’s high level of play in the tournament, which saw it come out of group 6 with victories over Brimbank Stallions (3-2) and Vietnamese ST (4-1). Olympic brushed aside St Albans Saints (2-0) in

the quarter-finals before edging out Sunshine United (3-1) in the semis. Goals were certainly on the menu for Olympic. ‘‘They were very consistent,’’ Portelli said. ‘‘There were some good teams come to the tournament. They kept producing the goods.’’ In the women’s section, the crowds got the final they wanted with Premier League outfit Cairnlea facing host club Keilor Park. Cairnlea had to overcome a two-goal deficit and made use of extra time to claim the title. Portelli was proud of his team, which is two division below powerhouse Cairnlea. ‘‘They gave them a good run,’’ Portelli said. ‘‘They [Cairnlea] were getting a bit concerned. ‘‘A few errors here and there and a few missed chances was the difference. Overall, we’re really pleased with what they did.’’ Cairnlea’s run to the final included wins over Keilor Park (3-2), St Albans (5-0) and Keilor Park Matildas (9-1).
