FIRST PERSON

I am JJack Tandy … and do I have a joke for you I’ve been working as a removalist at Man With A

Van coming up to six years. I started working here as I was finishing off my uni degree and just loved it so much that I stayed. Everyone here has, how shall we say, a secret life, or an alter ego. They’re either musicians, or performers, comedians, actors, playwrights, so there’s never a dull day. I do comedy improv on the side. I don’t really sort of mine the job for material. But in this job and, one of the great things about it, is that everyone needs to move every now and then, so you do get to see a broad cross-section of society. It’s also a very physically demanding job, which I really enjoy. As long as you’ve got a good lifting partner, you can get through everything. You always get the old “you obviously wouldn’t need a gym membership”. But we do have an in-house gym regimen we do to keep us fit, absolutely. The heaviest thing I’ve ever lifted was a TV unit that was about five metres in length and made of MDF. It took four of us to lift ... it was probably in excess of 300 kilograms. Once you work here for a while, you become a minimalist pretty quickly. I hate moving. I try to put it off as much as I can. When you’re going out on the road for the first time, you’re paired up with one of the senior staff members. It’s a fairly basic job, but there are a lot of little things that you just really need to hone your skills on. Reversing a truck down a tight alley – that takes a long time to really get down. They say that moving is one of the most stressful things you can do in life. People move for all kinds of reasons. You try to match the occasion, where sometimes you’re a bit more sensitive. We also know that people aren’t always themselves on moving day. You get them at their best and you get them at their worst. One of the most interesting parts is just getting to know the customer’s story. It’s kind of a bit like talkback radio, where you can just have a chat and get their views on various subjects. I love the challenge of moving furniture. I’m also a big nerd for puzzles. A lot of people make the very standard joke that you must really be into Tetris. But yeah, I really am. ●

Looming storm clouds as seen on a Yarra River cruise from Williamstown

When Senator Penny Wong sat down with journalist Peter Barrett, and photographer Kristoffer Paulsen, in her Adelaide electorate office to share a snippet of family life, it was unsurprising that commanding the halls of Canberra to reading bedside stories is not a stretch for this extremely busy mum; her time in public office has been characterised by power and compassion. This Mother’s Day will be the first for hers, and many other families, since the marriage-equality law was passed. Wong reflects on the impact of the campaign and the decision on family life, following an emotional 2017. ●

Penny Wong’s rites of passage COVER STORY \ THE SENATOR TALKS FAMILY AFTER MARRIAGE EQUALITY

A

t a time when public interest in the private lives of politicians could be at its lowest ebb, it’s a brave or reckless MP who opens up to the media about her family. But for the usually very private Senator Penny Wong, last year’s marriage equality debate gave her no choice. The openly gay mother of two found her personal life taking centre stage in a divisive public discussion that caused distress to many people in the LGBTIQ community. The record shows that Australians answered emphatically “yes” to same-sex marriage. But now, almost six months after the law was changed, Wong has been reflecting on how the battle affected her family. “It’s a cliche, isn’t it, but children change your life. In very practical ways – a whole new level of sleep deprivation,” she laughs, “but they change your life also in terms of the relative weight you give things. And I got into politics because I wanted to make change and change the world, or the country, for the better. I think having kids gives that a different emotional resonance.” We are chatting in a spartan meeting room in the Labor senator’s electoral office in central Adelaide. Like climate change, she says, marriage equality is an intergenerational issue. But when elements of the “no” campaign resorted to implying that same-sex couple families were somehow “lesser” because they didn’t contain a mother and a father, it affected her deeply. “The stakes on that were raised by the way in which the debate proceeded, in that so many of

6

T H E W E E K LY R E V I E W

those who were opposed to equality were prepared to use children as collateral damage, as collateral, in what I’ve described as the war against equality. I could accept that there were people who didn’t agree but I found it actually ethically untenable, the way in which they were prepared to use children as the basis on which they ran the argument.”

W

ong clearly hasn’t forgotten comments made by Joe Hockey on ABC’s Q&A, either. “If people really cared about kids, one would think you’d actually think about what it meant for children to hear persistently in the media that their families were somehow abnormal. Those were the messages. So, [the debate] was very important and it was important because of the principle of equality and because of people’s relationships. “People should have that choice and a loving relationship shouldn’t be discriminated against in the way that they were. But it was pretty important, I think, because of what it said to all our children about inclusion.” With her partner Sophie Allouache and their two daughters, Alexandra, 6, and Hannah, 3, Wong lives in an inner-southern suburb of Adelaide. Like most families, the couple juggles parenting and work with Sophie doing “more than the lion’s share” of the former. As Leader of the Opposition in the Senate and the Opposition spokeswoman for foreign affairs, Wong’s

schedule has her flying regularly to Canberra. To compensate, she tends to fly late on a Sunday and return early on Friday, in order to be home for family breakfast; she cooks when she can (curries and lasagne among her repertoire) and does school drop-offs, when her schedule permits. “What can you do?,” she says. “I think we still structure work on the [assumption] that there’s someone home doing primary caring responsibilities. I think that’s the reality.” Wong also loves reading to her children – currently she is flipping between the Winnie-thePooh collection and a fairy book series with Alexandra and various picture books with Hannah (favourites include There’s A Hippopotamus On Our Roof Eating Cake and A Lion In The Night Night). “Kids’ books are great – that has been a revelation; they’re so much fun. One of the best things I’ve done as a politician was I got to read at Writers’ Week, and the girls chose what I read.” As for Mother’s Day, the loose plan so far is to catch up with both her mother and Sophie’s. Meanwhile, Wong remembers dishing up badly made instant coffee and toast in bed as a child for her mum, although pancakes were preferred. Alexandra and Hannah are still a little young to carry on that tradition, she says. “We just usually have a nice breakfast. It’s usually a bit of a negotiation because Hannah loves pancakes, Xandra doesn’t like pancakes – she must be the only child in the universe who doesn’t like pancakes.”

“I wanted to make change and change the world ... for the better. I think having kids gives that a different emotional resonance.”

During the height of the marriage equality debate, says Wong, it was impossible to keep Alexandra oblivious to everything that was happening in the media. “She would ask whether people supported it or not and she wanted to go to shops that had the sign, you know, ‘This small business supports equality’. She’d say, ‘They support equality, mum, let’s go there’.” When the yes vote was announced on November 15 it brought the family great relief (not to mention Wong to tears – she’s still embarrassed about crying on national television). “[Alexandra] said, ‘We won, Ma,’ and I said, ‘Yeah, we did, darling. Isn’t it good?’ And now we just – everyone’s moved on. I think one of the changes is it doesn’t feel as much of a statement any more, does it? Sometimes you used to feel that being in public with Soph and the kids, some people used to regard it as a political statement ... but [now] it just feels like life.” Which brings us back to that central question. Why would Senator Wong – known for her methodical and excoriating intellectual take-downs of political rivals – be talking about pancakes and parenting with a journalist? “With all due respect, I didn’t get in to politics to talk about my personal life,” she begins, pausing to find the right words. “[With] the ‘yes’ vote, the country did a great thing and it meant a lot to a lot of people. And it meant a lot not just to those of us who are in samesex relationships but it meant a lot to people in the community for whom this really mattered … And it mattered a lot to parents in families like ours. It mattered a lot to us for our kids. So, I suppose I did want to express that again.” In past speeches Wong has maintained she fights for the world she wants her children to inherit. And so, whether conscious of it or not, this Mother’s Day at the Wong/Allouache household will be a special one. Because the world has changed. ●

Vodka has none of the street cred of gin but, well made, this spirit can be a clean, fresh thing of wonder. Hartshorn Distillery’s vodka, recent winner of the Best Vodka at the 2018 World Vodka Awards, is living proof of that. Hartshorn vodka has an artisan back story worthy of any gin: it’s made in limited volume in southern Tasmania by Ryan Hartshorn, whose mother and sister make award-winning sheep-milk cheese at Grandvewe Cheeses. In a world first, Ryan figured out how to make vodka from whey, a waste product of the cheese-making process. The unfiltered vodka acquires a unique, gorgeous sweetness on the nose and a subtle creamy texture in the mouth; it can be sipped straight at room temperature but also makes a cracking vodka martini. The best place to sample Hartshorn’s martini cred is at the recently opened and exuberantly decorated Natural History Bar & Grill. This cavernous New Yorkstyle steakhouse features giant dioramas filled with taxidermy beasts and birds, a David Lynch-worthy red-and-black chequered floor and a maze of booths and bar stools. It’s a place made for drinking martinis and to prove it has a lunch special every Friday: three martinis and a steak with all the trimmings for $75. The Hartshorn vodka martini is expertly chilled in the correct glassware with a twist of orange that adds a subtle note of citrus to the slightly sweet creaminess. It has the clean, elixir-of-life quality possessed of all the best martinis. ●

All four one Dine with a group at Hanoi Hannah New Quarter, Commune Group’s first foray north since the original opened in Windsor six years ago. It takes multiple mouths to finish the sticky tamarind pork hock, which you shred from the bone and roll in rice paper with Asian herbs, lettuce, cucumber and pineapple. I had high hopes for northern-Vietnamese favourite cha ca – enjoyed overseas, chunks of turmericcoated rockling sizzle on a hot plate and scissors chop piles of dill to throw in. Here it’s a small serve of oily fish with minimal greens. Ditch chopsticks to dig into deep-fried fish wings or charred beef rib with chilli “crack salt”. Dessert is Saigon Sally reincarnate – the tiri-mi-sally ice-cream sandwich from the now-closed restaurant. Staff pull up a seat to take orders and deliver extra food when the kitchen slips up – gaffes are handled with grace and add personality. Suspended rattan cabinetry snakes along the ceiling above a monochrome mural of Hanoi’s bustling Old Quarter – a nod to the contagious atmosphere that New Quarter is creating in Richmond. ● Hanoi Hannah New Quarter ● 79-83 Swan Street, Richmond

For Guy Grossi, it’s the smell of olive oil, onion and garlic that brings him back home. That, and a taste of his mum’s signature calamari ragu. “But I add a little turmeric and cumin when I make it; it’s used as a seasoning and adds a little lift,” Grossi adds quietly, his mum’s nearby, “but, I’d never tell her.” Grossi started learning young from his mum, Marisa Grossi. At six years old, he was cleaning beans, while getting a glimpse of his dad’s chef work on holidays and weekends. “Eventually it gets under your skin. We discuss food all the time, when we’re eating lunch, we’re discussing dinner.” But unlike the bright lights and heat of a restaurant, Marisa’s kitchen was the nurturing heart of the home. “The first spot you’d go to find her was the kitchen. She’d either be braising, cooking or making fresh pasta. And it was always generous, in nature and spirit.” In the same essence, Grossi’s Cellar Bar makes a bountiful

140 litres of bolognese each week, just the way his mum does. Marisa laid down firm sauce foundations from the beginning. “Mum taught me to always take enough time to sweat the onions properly, otherwise you don’t get the lovely sugars caramelising in the sauce.” So, if you smell onions sweating down next to Cellar Bar, it’s because Guy’s mum taught him so.

“The first spot you’ d go to find her was the kitchen. She’ d either be braising, cooking or making fresh pasta. And it was always generous, in nature and spirit.” - GUY GROSSI

Thi Le “Mum always says you should be feeding people like you’re feeding soldiers,” says chef Thi Le of Anchovy, “with lots of food that is nourishing and comforting.” And true to her word, when her mum, Hieu Le, is down from Sydney, you’ll find her in the kitchen cooking the staff meal for the whole Anchovy team. From making her trademark wraps packed with herbs, a bulk batch of pork-stuffed bitter melon soup, to preserving watermelon skin. When Hieu cooks, nothing goes to waste. Thi Le recounts her mum’s instinctive nose-to-tail approach to food and her frugal pickling habits, “and now all of a sudden everyone is preserving, mum was doing this for so many years and I just thought she was crazy”. Le arrived in Australia with her Vietnamese mother at two years old, after emigrating from Malaysia. “My ethos is how my mum likes to eat, and how we grew up eating. Most of the dishes at Anchovy are that, just reinterpreted.” It is this same maternal approach to sharing food that led Thi to cooking professionally. “Grandmas and mums, they’re just

feeders. They just want to share. They get really excited about cooking something very simple and delicious. This is the reason the food at Anchovy is nurturing; there’s no tricks.” Just the way mum likes it. CONTINUES » P14

Michael James From helping bake the Cornish pasties that once lined his grandma’s ironing board in the kitchen, Michael James of Tivoli Road Bakery has come full circle. Leaving Cornwall at 18 to work as a chef in London, Michael returned to baking when he moved to Sydney with his wife and co-owner Pippa. The Cornish classic is now available on Fridays in their busy South Yarra bakery. “In the heyday, we’d make pasties once a week and everything was done by hand,” says James. Sticking closely to the recipe, they use lard and beef fat for the pastry, beef skirt, potatoes, onions and swede. Alongside the pasty are Cornish saffron buns. “My grandma would make them and if not in bun form, they’d be a cake, and we’d have them as an after-dinner snack, toasted with butter,” James says. Like the nostalgic pastie, they’re also sold at Tivoli Road Bakery. Since James’s mum passing in 2010, and living far from his family in Cornwall, the essence of his childhood lives in the cabinets and on the shelves of his family-owned bakery.

“In the heyday, we’ d make pasties once a week and everything was done by hand.” - MICHAEL JAMES

Charlie Carrington It makes sense that Peking duck was a revelation of cooking for Charlie Carrington, chef and owner of Atlas Dining, a restaurant with a revolving international menu. He was 10 when his mum Jacquie brought home all the ingredients to make the meal. “Honestly, mum will admit she’s a pretty average cook – there are some of the ‘Aussie-mum staples’ that she nails and always has, but I think she will admit that it’s better when I cook the family dinner.” Although what Jacquie lacks in culinary finesse, she makes up for in steadfast support and encouragement. “At the age of 15 when your mum helps you write an email to request work experience at a three-Michelin-starred restaurant in the UK and you get it, well, the rest is history,” he says.

Rosa Mitchell Rosa Mitchell of Rosa’s Canteen with her mother, Maria, left. Colin Mainds and a mixed-berry sundae, right.

Colin Mainds When Colin Mainds, head chef at Cumulus Up, is in need of inspiration, he calls his mum Doreen in Scotland. “If I’m at a stumbling point, like making this menu, it’s, ‘Mum, I’ve got these fantastic berries: what will I do?’.” The answer has resulted in a sell-out dessert, every night. Known in Scotland as the cranachan, Mainds has named it mixed-berry sundae. Doreen now runs

her own confectionery business, making Scottish tablet (a variation of fudge), which is also a component in the sundae’s crumb. Pasta is another dish from home. “She keeps it simple with a little butter, garlic and heaps of parmesan.” Mainds also serves his garganelli with a butter sauce and parmesan. Although he has added fine-dining flair, Doreen’s advice remains. “Mum always said to me, ‘Don’t get frustrated and keep a cool head’.” ●

12379384-EPJ08-18 10062227

“Voiu un caffè?,” Rosa Mitchell gently asks her mum in her restaurant Rosa’s Canteen. Maria replies with a nod and shortly espresso cups arrive filled with percolator coffee, true Italian style. While Rosa and Maria are both stirring in a teaspoon of sugar, Rosa explains they have just spent four days making passata together. Both sipping almost in unison, she adds, “luckily we’ve written recipes down over the years, especially the salami, because she’s never measured a recipe in her life”. Mitchell was seven when her family arrived in Australia in 1962 from Sicily. Just two years before she started cooking the family meals. “Mum and dad had to work, so I would cook, and because I cooked with my grandma so often it was intuitive.” Even though she admits all her aunties have slightly difference recipes, she uses her mum’s in her restaurant. “I always tell customers it’s my mum’s recipe, especially the cauliflower fritters. No matter where we go, or where we cook it, or who I give the recipe to, people love it and that’s a fact.”

Captains’ Call

VANESSA D’ANDREA & YASMINE ATHAIDE SPECIAL PROMOTION

A

ve Maria College’s co-school captains Vanessa D’Andrea and Yasmine Athaide have learnt the importance of being authentic and relatable leaders since starting in their roles this year. They are working to empower young women to become leaders of the future.

WHY DID YOU BOTH WANT TO BE SCHOOL

We both wanted to take on a new challenge and develop skills allowing us to be able to work with a wide range of people. Working together in a partnership, we felt we were more than able to lead the young women of Ave Maria; challenging each individual to embrace and put into practice their unique talents and abilities on a more frequent basis. We wanted to break the stereotype of women in leadership – particularly in the workforce – so we aim for each student to feel empowered and gain independence so they feel equipped for life after the conclusion of their secondary school journey. We felt we could provide the students with a positive learning culture, enabling each individual to feel capable of achieving their goals.

GREG BRIGGS

CAPTAIN?

VA N E S SA D ’A N D R E A & YA S M I N E AT H A I D E

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT AS SCHOOL CAPTAIN?

WHAT ARE THE QUALITIES OF A GOOD LEADER

There are many skills we have learnt through our work as school leaders. These include being able to negotiate through communicating to the college executive and student body. We have also learnt the importance of being authentic and relatable leaders the young women of Ave Maria can look up to and seek guidance from. We’ve also become more resilient by learning through our mistakes and maintaining an optimistic approach to keep moving forward in our studies and in our role as leaders.

IN YOUR VIEW?

IS THERE A LEADER WHOM YOU LOOK UP TO OR ADMIRE?

We both look up to actress Emma Watson – through her work of launching the campaign “HeForShe” she was recognised as a strong female leader. She used her status as a platform to promote gender equality and inspire young women to aim high and feel worthy of themselves – as we aim to do.

We believe the qualities that make a good leader include: Being respectful of those around them; Being a good communicator; Someone who is able to work with others; Being efficient and reliable; Having resilience; Being committed and motivated to the task at hand. WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS?

Our immediate future plans as school captains include continuing to strengthen relationships between students and staff at Ave Maria College. We also want to ensure students continue to challenge themselves and break down barriers they face inside and outside of school. We are also working to strive for academic excellence, something which we are encouraging other students at the college to do. Our plans also include introducing more frequent

initiatives throughout the year to increase student participation and interaction among various year levels. VANESSA: When I complete my studies I want to

go to university next year. I haven’t decided exactly what course I would like to study but the area that interests me is exercise and sport science working with professional athletes. As well as going to university, I am hoping to get a part-time job while studying, preferably working in a field related to fitness as I have my certificate III in sport and recreation. YASMINE: I’m looking to attend university next year

and I eventually want to work in the medical industry. At the moment I’m unsure about the field I’d like to specialise in. I’m also intending to spend time travelling, however this won’t be directly after finishing at Ave Maria College. ● MELISSA HEAGNEY

FEATURE HOUSE MOONEE PONDS \ 42 BENT STREET 3

he addition of an upper level and renovations to the living area of this Victorian house have transformed it into a light-filled modern family home. The original decorative touches of the home have been maintained in the process, including the single-fronted facade with iron lacework, handsome glass-work, and the high ceilings of the hallway and bedrooms. Off the central hallway are two of the bedrooms (the larger of which does without a built-in wardrobe). The family bathroom is adjacent and features a black, claw foot bath, clearly making a statement. At the end of the hallway, the property opens to a meals area and kitchen with timber floors, stone benches, dark wooden cabinetry, 900-millimetre Ilve cooker and a clever space for a temperature-controlled wine storage unit. The kitchen looks over the living area – the back wall of which is almost entirely lined with bifold glass doors that open to the outdoors. These doors lead onto a timber deck, which steps down to a stone-paved outdoor dining area. On the home’s upper floor is the main bedroom with split-system heating and cooling, a walk-in wardrobe and en suite with double vanity. A study floored in timber is adjacent – ideal for logging in to work at home or families with school-aged children. The automated garage – with right-of-way – is at the back of the block and houses the laundry, a powder room, and attic storage. A neat front garden with brick paving behind a black iron fence completes this picture-perfect residence. The property is conveniently located in up-and-coming Moonee Ponds. Within walking distance is Queens Park, the Sam Merrifield Library, Moonee Valley Racecourse and the numerous cafes, shops and businesses on Mt Alexander Road and the Moonee Ponds Junction. Access to the CBD is easy via the nearby 59 tram and Moonee Ponds train station. Several bus routes also have stops just steps from the property, including the 508, 475, 476, 477, 483, 501, and the 82 tram which heads to Footscray. ● AMELIA BARNES property@domain.com.au

The beauty of this meticulously preserved single-storey period home continues indoors. The Gables opens to a central hallway leading to all four bedrooms, all with built-in wardrobes. The main has an en suite and the remaining three have original open fireplaces. The centre of the home comprises a renovated open-plan living area with dark timber floors. The dining area in particular receives streams of natural light via a large north-facing window. In the ultra-contemporary kitchen are stone benchtops, pendant lights above, soft-closing cabinetry and Ilve appliances. The home’s family bathroom is also off this area, and has a contemporary freestanding tub and printed feature wall. Glass sliding doors off the living area open to the bluestonepaved entertaining area and backyard with established gardens hosting the workshop, water tank, shed, and gated driveway with tandem double carport. Additional property features include hydronic heating, splitsystem heating and cooling, ducted vacuum, alarm system, integrated audio, study alcove with a built-in workstation and a large laundry. ● AMELIA BARNES AGENT \ Nelson Alexander 9379 1313 PRICE \ $1.8 million – $1.9 million AUCTION \ May 12 at 1pm Scan the code with the Domain app to view listing

Enjoying the outdoors at this sophisticated family home is as easy as stepping from one room to another. The formal lounge opens to a deck; the al fresco area off the large openplan living area is huge, and there is a big balcony off the upstairs retreat and one of the three bedrooms there. The ground floor is light and open, and also hosts the luxurious main bedroom suite with its walk-in wardrobe and en suite. The white kitchen has double wall ovens, statement lights over the island bench and an induction cooktop. The property is zoned for Strathmore College. ● BEVERLEY JOHANSON

Contemporary design expertise has lifted this charming freestanding cottage to a very stylish level of comfort and amenity. The three bedrooms off the hall have fireplaces and period details, and the bathroom, with claw foot bath, has been sympathetically decorated. The kitchen, dining and living area at the rear, however, are modern and clever, maximising light and space. The kitchen has stone benches, a 900-millimetre stove and integrated fridge. The living area opens to a private garden with al fresco zone.
