T

he powerful cycling lobby has won itself a new and influential friend now that police commissioner Ken Lay has purchased a bicycle and says he will ride it regularly on our roads. Predictably, Mr Lay was on the front foot appealing to motorists to respect the rights of cyclists on the highways and accord them the normal courtesies. Mr Lay should understand there is little chance of that happening when motorists, on a daily basis, see many cyclists breaking many of the road rules. Bike riders need to earn respect by their behaviour on the roads. In Moonee Valley, riders often ignore red traffic signals and cross pedestrian crossings illegally. They are meant to dismount. Many zigzag in and out of traffic, riding on the wrong side of the road. We see them in the exclusive bus lane on Buckley Street when there is a bike track to their left, just 10 metres away. Many ride at night in dark clothing and no lights, putting their lives at risk.

weekday I cannot say. In truth, I’ve noticed that it’s no longer so easy to stereotype bad drivers to young men in hotted-up cars and old folk in hats on Sunday. One thing I have noticed is that where traffic is slowed in the vicinity of schools, the motorists who fail to observe the flashing 40km/h sign are more often than not women. Women presumably none too worried about skittling other people’s children in their haste to pick up their own. When it comes to traffic offences, the gender gap is narrowing. While this is partly a reflection of an increase in the number of cars on the road and women at the wheel generally, there is also some worrying evidence to show the new breed of hoon is a her. In the United States, the number of women who have been arrested for drink-driving has leapt 30 per cent in the past decade. In Australia, too, the data shows an increase in young women drink-driving. Even by their own admission, women are more likely to take risks, with the annual AAMI Young Driver Index showing that young female drivers were almost twice as likely, than a decade ago, to have driven while over the limit. The 2012 research showed 14 per cent of women admitted getting behind the wheel while drunk, up from 8 per cent in 2002. This compared to 16 per cent of young men, down from 29 per cent over the same period. This is not the kind of gender equality we should aim for. n the road again and the car is cruising at two kilometres above the limit. Yes, officer, it has been set deliberately, to fall within the tolerance allowed for both fixed and mobile cameras. After all, as Hercules Speedo beside me explains, it simply wouldn’t do to get caught in one’s own trap. Swoosh, a car zips past in the outside lane, then another, and another that has to be travelling at close to 120km/h in a 100km/h zone. As the driver holds steady to course, it’s my job to eyeball those at the wheel of passing vehicles to gauge their gender and age. After a short distance I’m beginning to feel like the captain of a debating team that has just drawn for the affirmative and the topic is: Gina Rinehart is really a lovely person. Nine cars have passed us. Six driven by women, two by men and another by gender unknown owing to inability to see through wildly gesticulating passenger. Of the six females, two had P-plates, three looked to be in their 20s to 30s, and one I’d judged to be south of 60 was driving a gleaming black Lexus. Even if I gender-reassign the unknown driver to the male team, speeding women still outnumber the blokes by 2 to 1. This pattern more or less continues for the next 20 kilometres. My best excuse is pretty feeble: perhaps it’s because there are more women on the road at this time of day. Although precisely why this should be at 8am on a

en’s socks take a fashionable turn with the arrival of Barnaby – a start-up company launched by three friends who saw a future in the men’s accessory market. Launched by former management consultant colleagues Shay Namdarian, Andrei Maior and David Tay (all aged 28) – the lads saw a niche for colour where you least expect it. Inspired by graphic design and architecture, the socks are bright, playful and meant to be noticed. What’s more, they’ve partnered with YGAP (Y-Generation Against Poverty) to help raise money for the charity every time a pair of these specially designed socks is bought from their collection. “YGAP is a watch-this-space organisation,” says Tay. “We love their innovative ideas. They are cool. We know funding donated will be used to make a dent on social well-being, whether it be from economic hardship internationally, locally or environmentally.” Maior says the trio thought that if people needed a reason to wear colorful socks, supporting a charity was a pretty good one. They decided to launch into the fashion market last year to tap into their creative side. Namdarian says that colourful socks are huge in Europe and, although it has taken local audiences a little longer to connect with the idea, change is happening. “We wear socks every day and, with statement socks trending at the moment, it was the perfect opportunity to launch Barnaby,” says Namdarian. What would you change in your neighbourhood? The car park in our North Essendon shopping strip. It’s an absolute nightmare to get into that little strip to get a parking spot, and the one-hour time limit is not enough. I’d love to see more car parks, so a coffee date doesn’t ever end up with an expensive fine on top. What would you not change? I love the strip shops, and I would not want to see apartments in their place. I love the trees in the area and the parks, too. I wouldn’t like to see the Moonee Valley Festival change; it’s an amazing event and showcasing all the local businesses in the area is a great thing. How do you spend your downtime? I like to go to the gym at East Keilor Leisure Centre where I love to do pump classes and combat. I also love

Draft Amendment C153 to the Moreland Planning Scheme Moreland City Council Your Residential Zones are Changing – submissions close 17th April 2014 All existing Residential 1 Zone (R1Z) land in Moreland is being rezoned to one of three new zones – Neighbourhood Residential Zone (NRZ), General Residential Zone (GRZ) or Residential Growth Zone (RGZ). This is to implement the reformed residential zones introduced by the Minister for Planning. The new residential zones are designed to give greater clarity about the type and density of development that can be expected in residential areas. Councils have until 1 July 2014 to introduce the new residential zones into their planning schemes. If Council chooses to do nothing, the existing Residential 1 Zone (R1Z) will be transitioned to the new General Residential Zone (GRZ) on 1 July 2014. ast time I looked at Mitsubishi’s neat little ASX it had just one problem; the highly economical diesel engine wasn’t available with an automatic gearbox. Now it is, and the combination of generous torque and economy will win plenty of customers, even if the motor is a bit noisy. The overriding factor is that the ASX is such a sensible package for the price, and prices start at just $24,990 for the base two-wheel-drive petrol model. It’s a compact wagon that offers optional four-wheel-drive and good ground clearance for the occasional bush track or fishing spot, but has none of the traditional hallmarks of big, boofy four-wheel-drives. In other words, it looks and behaves like a regular car. This not only makes it easier to drive and park, it also saves you from the sideways looks from neighbours and friends who fret about the fate of the planet and vote Green. Pretty much the only complaint I have is the temporary spare tyre, a dumb idea on a car that could otherwise be used comfortably for a big round-Australia trip. Bringing an automatic together with a diesel engine is never straightforward and that may be why Mitsubishi took its time doing it, but this combination works well. The changes are smooth and fuss free in normal driving. Only one thing to watch; the gearbox is calibrated for maximum fuel economy and that means it changes down at the earliest

oets like to wax lyrical about “the bend in the road”, but for home-owners the bend is good to have for practical reasons. Price Street has a most disconcerting kink for motorists who want a quick dash from Buckley Street to Keilor Road; they peer in and think: “Nup.” All the better for street cricket and bicycle lessons.
