Memo MPs: lend mayor an ear BY BEN CAMERON NEWLY elected Moorabool mayor Pat Toohey has wasted no time sending a strong message to federal and state governments. After putting on the mayoral robes at a council meeting last Wednesday night, Cr Toohey said: ‘‘There won’t be a member of state or federal parliament who won’t know the issues that we want understood and listened to.’’ Cr Toohey, also mayor from 2009-10, singled out state Melton MP Don Nardella and a representative of federal Ballarat MP Catherine King as among those listening. ‘‘Please take this message to State Parliament, that Moorabool will not be left standing,’’ he said. ‘‘Please take the message back to Canberra that Moorabool Shire expects its share and Moorabool Shire expects its quality of living will not be left behind.’’ Cr Toohey said government cash would be essential next year as rates alone could not fund the major projects needed. ‘‘The reality is, most of the money we will spend over the next four years on significant projects . . . it will come from state and federal parliaments.’’ In his farewell address, former mayor Pat Griffin nominated the Bacchus Marsh Indoor Aquatic Centre, an upgrade of Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital and renewal of Bacchus Marsh Secondary College as crucial projects. He also said Moorabool must understand the potential benefits of a new coal mine in Bacchus Marsh. ‘‘The arguments of the Moorabool Environment Group are important and believable but, in reality, council will have little say in the outcome. So in order to get the best result for us all, get a briefing from the potential developers.’’ Mr Griffin said he was proud of the council’s strong stance on wind farms and pleased Bacchus Marsh’s new library had ‘‘exceeded expectations’’. But he was disappointed with the rejection of the controversial Woolpack Road proposal for the Avenue of Honour.

Hair’s the easy part As an admittedly hirsute bloke, Bacchus Marsh’s Heath Menhennet (pictured) admits there’s no easier cause to support than Movember. ‘‘It’s pretty easy to not shave a bit of hair on your face,’’ he says. ‘‘I’m an extremely hairy bloke, so it’s very easy to grow a mo. Although the missus has gone off me a bit. She thinks I look like a Bandido.’’ The annual fund-raiser supports prostate cancer and mental health initiatives for men. ‘Very violent man’ faces jail for kill threat A BACCHUS Marsh man has been acquitted of assault charges by a jury but faces up to 10 years in jail after he was found guilty of making a threat to kill. The Weekly can now reveal Christopher Marra was on parole when he threatened Wayne McKay on January 30 last year. Marra elected to have the case heard before a jury in the County Court and was acquitted on all but the one charge. The jury gave its verdict on November 5. During a five-day trial, Mr McKay said Marra

set upon him when he arrived at the home of a mutual ex-girlfriend. But the jury dismissed the allegations, along with claims Marra had stabbed Mr McKay in the hand. Crown prosecutor Wendy Duncan said Marra had a history of violence and ought to be sentenced as a “serious violent offender”. She submitted that a jail sentence of up to 12 months was suitable and said it should be served on top of his remaining parole period. The court heard Marra was in the middle of

almost three years of parole over other offences when the altercation with Mr McKay occurred. Since then, Marra has spent another 15 months in jail. Defence counsel Simon Moglia said Marra ought not spend any additional time in jail when his current term finished. He said the offending was at the lower end of the scale and Marra had been apprehensive on Mr McKay’s arrival. “It’s clear the circumstances out of which the threat arises are ones where he was not the

initiator,” Mr Moglia said. “This was a threat of very short duration.” He said that keeping Marra’s current release date of May 2014 was “the only rational or just approach”. But Judge John Carmody was not convinced, saying that in the past Marra had been a “very violent man”. “He’s had a long history of violent offending,” he said. Marra will be sentenced tomorrow. — Evan Schuurman, Ballarat Courier

FORMER Moorabool mayor Pat Griffin has urged the council to invest more money in local tourism. Speaking at the launch of this weekend’s Strawberries and Cherries Trail Weekend and just days after losing his East Moorabool ward seat, Mr Griffin urged the community to push the council harder on tourism. ‘‘[The shire] needs to invest more in its tourism activities . . . it needs to put together better marketing plans for events and other activities. ‘‘It needs to help tourism investors come to our shire.’’ Mr Griffin believed Moorabool lacked adequate tourism infrastructure. ‘‘We have a wealth of attractions, but we do lack accommodation and some other tourism

New Tourism Moorabool chairman Barry Wilkins agreed there was room for improvement, but an upcoming review of practices would provide a clearer picture of what was needed. ‘‘New accommodation and tourism infrastructure is definitely on the list,’’ he said. ‘‘I also feel there’s a golden opportunity for more coach tours in Moorabool.’’ Destination Melbourne’s Chris Buckingham said Moorabool tourism was ‘‘going to go off’’ in future. This weekend’s Strawberries and Cherries Trail Weekend will include strawberry picking, a cherry pip-spitting competition, tours and strawberry and cherry-inspired menus.

infrastructure. Council needs to step up . . . and ensure it makes life easier for people who want to add to the mix.’’ The council has budgeted to increase expenditure on marketing and tourism to almost 3 per cent of rates revenue this financial year. New mayor Pat Toohey said the council would continue to make the region a destination of choice. ‘‘In recent times, the shire has added the first tourism officer to co-ordinate visitor information, support its volunteers and implement new marketing programs to support local events such as the Feast of March and the shire’s events calendar. ‘‘This increased council support is reflected in increased visitation over the past five years of over 116 per cent.’’

Bombs away in amnesty A defused bomb has been handed in to Bacchus Marsh police as part of a statewide amnesty on guns and weapons. Police said a Bacchus Marsh resident handed in the bomb after police went to her house on an unrelated matter. ‘‘The army have checked it out and it’s either a World War I or World War II bomb,’’ Sergeant Mark Bacon said. Six shotguns, two samurai swords and a machete (pictured with Sergeant Glenn Saw) were also handed in to Bacchus Marsh police during October. Residents have until November 30 to present weapons to police to be destroyed. The penalty for carrying an illegal weapon is up to two years imprisonment, or up to 10 years for firearms offences. Space for cars increases Parking in Ballan is being disrupted as development of a 50-space car park begins in Steiglitz Street. After drains are laid, the council will seal the surface and build a concrete path to Inglis Street. Council chief executive Rob Croxford said: “We know both the population and visitor numbers are increasing so the extra parking will be very beneficial.

Rents soar as demand rises BY BEN CAMERON RENTAL prices for Darley units are increasing at record rates, according to a national magazine. Darley has been placed 30th nationally for price jumps in the past year, with the town identified as one of 70 hot spots across the country. Australian Property Investor reported prices shot up 36 per cent in the past 12 months and said a ‘‘modest’’ spike in building activity had increased the price to $245 a week. New census data shows the median rent in Moorabool is $208. ‘‘Prices are still quite affordable, but they started at a very low base,’’ API deputy editor Shannon Molloy said. ‘‘There’s not a great many units in the area and they’ve been quite popular with renters.’’

Meanwhile, the increase in Moorabool’s median house price is almost five times the regional Victorian average. Median house prices have risen by 4.6 per cent last quarter, from $325,000 to $340,000 — well above the state average of 0.7 per cent. Real Estate Institute of Victoria spokesman Robert Larocca said it was a strong result for Moorabool. “The improved demand is another sign of the small improvements we are seeing in the market,’’ he said. ‘‘Buyers are clearly realising that prices are below the peak and are therefore providing excellent value right now. The improvement in the shire also reflects the broader movement in Melbourne, which shows trending growth in the outer and middle suburbs.

Dylan wants handball to happiness Residents are being urged to open their hearts to help local children with a disability. Extended Families volunteer co-ordinator Leila McConnell says the organisation, which launched a Melton program in September, needs people to help youngsters like Dylan, 15 (pictured), who is looking for someone to help him pursue his love of football and cricket. Volunteers provide friendship and mentor children through sport and social events. Ms McConnell says Dylan needs someone to help him develop new skills and act as a positive role model – ‘‘like a big brother or uncle to him, or an aunty or sister’’. Ms McConnell says mentors can volunteer once a week or fortnightly. An information session will be held tonight from 7-8 at Morton Homestead in Taylors Hill. Theft of images shatters mum BY BEN CAMERON

Home burglary: Evonne Layton, with son Jeremy, is urging Bacchus Marsh residents to keep watch.

Picture: Ari Hatzis

A HEARTBROKEN Bacchus Marsh mother has urged residents to report suspicious behaviour after a series of burglaries in the town. Evonne Layton is convinced teenage thieves broke into her McCullagh Street residence between 10.30am and 4pm last Monday, stealing personal items valued at about $10,000. Mrs Layton broke down when she told the Weekly a computer storing images of her newborn baby which died in 2004 was stolen along with a $6000 ring and entertainment equipment. The theft came a month after a GPS was stolen from her husband’s car. A neighbour’s vehicle was taken two weeks earlier. ‘‘Bacchus Marsh is really bad for robberies,’’ Mrs Layton said, urging residents to ‘‘always be suspicious’’.

‘‘If people see something suspicious, they should report it to police immediately,’’ she said. Mrs Layton said a neighbour saw teenagers running towards Darley with a bag owned by her last Monday. ‘‘I was also told three boys aged about 15 to 18 were hanging around suspiciously outside my house last Monday.’’ Bacchus Marsh’s Detective Senior Constable Brian Malloch stressed that residents didn’t need to be a Neighbourhood Watch member to report suspicious behaviour. ‘‘Burglaries are always a concern in Bacchus Marsh,’’ Detective Senior Constable Malloch said. ‘‘We are following up a number of avenues of inquiry regarding the theft.’’

INSIDESTORY

A good deed, indeed While still promoting a sense of adventure, Scouting offers young people a variety of important life skills, writes ANDRIA COZZA. s a Scout, Ben McLeod is proud to be in the good company of astronauts. Two of the three astronauts involved in the first lunar landing were Scouting members, he says with pride. There’s more: of the 312 pilots and scientists selected as astronauts since 1959, 207 were Scouts or active in Scouting. In all, there are 25 million members around the world and their chief Scout is non other than television adventurer Bear Grylls. ‘‘Scouts are everywhere,’’ Ben declares. The enthusiasm of Ben and his family in Melton for the more than 100-year-old tradition is palpable. For the McLeods, Scouting is a shared passion. Mum Teresa got involved to spend more time with her children and eagerly took on the Scouting challenges, becoming a Leader. ‘‘It gets me to do things I wouldn’t normally do, like trekking five kilometres up in a mountain in snow.’’ While Scouts are often associated with selling cookies and tying knots, the McLeods are quick to challenge the stereotype. ‘‘We’re canoeing or rock-climbing or caving on the weekends,’’ says Ben. ‘‘People wonder if Scouts are still around and think that they’re dying out, but it’s just the opposite.’’

A

For Teresa, it’s the perfect outlet for teens seeking thrills or for adrenalin junkies. ‘‘Teenagers want that risk factor and these days with public liability it’s becoming more scarce. With the Scouts, you can do all that exciting stuff, like taking helicopter rides, skiing down slopes on ice, and jelly-wrestling.’’ For Ben’s younger brother Malcolm, Scouting isn’t only about the adrenalin-inducing weekend activities. ‘‘When I started I was a bit shy, but now I can walk up to people and start a conversation. I’ve travelled so much already, been to Sydney and America for camps, and I’ll be going to America again next year.’’ In between organising adventures on the weekends, Ben has been studying for the VCE. He says it has been easy to balance the two. He has taken full advantage of the training Scouts Australia provides, and he completed a Certificate II in business. Leadership training is provided through the Scouts Australia Institute of Training, a registered training organisation that offers qualifications recognised around the nation. The training helped Ben and fellow Rovers Scouts (aged 18-25) organise a twilight market in Melton twice a month. ‘‘Setting up a four-hour market and having it go off without a hitch was a

great thing,’’ Ben says. Teresa likes the idea of Scouts for her children, who have diverse interests, and the training available to her as a Leader (age 18 onwards). ‘‘As a leader, all the training is paid for and it’s an opportunity to get down to their level.’’ Teresa says that while teenagers will continue to want to take risks, being in the Scouts gives them a safe environment to make mistakes. ‘‘Kids will always be kids, but we trust them and that’s what it’s based on.’’ Scout leaders are volunteers who guide the younger ones during their weekly meetings, camps and activities. Australian Institute of Health and Welfare research shows that children who learn how to negotiate social interactions in the early years are more likely to achieve higher outcomes in education, health and well-being. Teresa’s daughter Maddy already knows she wants to head a family-run business. And thanks to activities Ben is involved in, he wants to pursue a career in the great outdoors. ‘‘My plan is to be an outdoor education specialist because of everything I’ve been exposed to. The Scouts have definitely given me a head start,’’ says Ben, who wants to apply to work in America next year as part of summer school camp programs. The social skills Malcolm McLeod has learnt have given him confidence to consider working as an electrician. ‘‘I want to be a sparky and Scouts has taught me how to interact with

people, something that’s important when you go to a person’s house. You have to build the trust.’’ Being trustworthy is a cornerstone for Scouts and most people are familiar with ‘Scout’s Honour’, the three-finger salute. For Maddy, the pledge translates to the world beyond Scouts. ‘‘Scout’s Honour is something you learn and live for the rest of your life. You know that obviously you won’t be kicked out of a camp, but you learn there is always going to be a consequence for your actions.’’ In Werribee, Maddy Parker and her brother Matthew also enjoy spending the time outdoors. ‘‘Especially when camping; Scouting gets you outdoors and learning lots of skills,’’ she enthuses. Maddy believes that being a Venturer has influenced the path she will take after she finishes school. ‘‘I guess it has influenced my interest in the environment and in animals, and I’d like to work in animal conservation.’’ Their mother Debbie Parker says Scouting can foster a sense of purpose in teenagers. ‘‘It gives them a great sense of belonging and, while it’s not competitive, they are challenged to improve on what they can do for themselves, rather than against others.’’ In Woodend, Lauren Walduck, 12, thinks more people should be involved in Scouting. ‘‘It’s fun and more young people should do it. There are so many different experiences and activities to look forward to. ‘‘Some of my friends have also joined and I’ve made a lot of friends along the way.’’ 1st Tullapark Scouts Casey and Hannah Maxwell, 11-year-old twins, enjoy their membership, but for very different reasons. ‘‘I love the adventures, especially camps and when we get to make our own type of shelter, with sticks and barks and leaves,’’ Casey says. Hannah, by contrast, loves badgework and learning traditional knot-tying. All say they have learnt an important lesson in life. ‘‘We learn a lot of respect for other Scouts,’’ says Casey, ‘‘and respect for people generally.’’ In January, Australian Scouts will attend a jamboree in Queensland along with 10,000 other Scouts from around the world. To become involved with the Scouts, call 1800 726 887 or visit scouts.com.au

Pedals replace paddles for Chris BY BEN CAMERON AFTER spending 99 days in a kayak covering nearly 3000 kilometres of the Murray River, you’d be forgiven for not wanting to look at a paddle ever again. But that’s the essence of young Bacchus Marsh adventurer Chris Hayward – he sees the world in a different way to most. ‘‘I would happily go kayaking again,’’ Hayward, 18, told the Weekly after finishing his journey, ‘‘especially in such a beautiful location as the Murray River. ‘‘Kayaking is a brilliant way to explore as it allows you exclusive access and a unique point of view.’’ Spending nearly a quarter of a year on the water, Hayward’s journey had the lot – from encounters with snakes to piloting a paddlesteamer, rescuing animals to having no contact with the outside world for days on end. He also remained on time, arriving at his final destination in

Young adventurer: Chris Hayward has finished a gruelling trip along the Murray River. Goolwa, South Australia about 10am on November 5, several weeks within the four months he’d allowed himself. ‘‘It [the finish] was filled with mixed emotions,’’ he said, ‘‘relief that I had succeeded in what I set out to do and made it back alive, and

also a touch of sadness that such a journey has come to an end.’’ Hayward admitted the journey got pretty rough between Loxton and Waikerie when he fell into the drink after a riverbank collapsed. Just after Waikerie came one of the highlights of the trip.

‘‘I was racing a three-storey high paddle steamer named the PS Marion. ‘‘After keeping a steady lead for around eight kilometres I wore out and slowed down. ‘‘The captain, being quite surprised that I could keep up so long, decided to stop . . . and welcomed me on board for morning tea and lunch. ‘‘They even offered me a shower and gave me a full behind-the-scenes tour and I was offered the chance to pilot it.’’ Hayward said he would bring company on his next river adventure. ‘‘The solitude does get to you on those long stretches, sometimes up to 300 kilometres without a single person. ‘‘The thing I missed most on the trip would have to be decent food and a comfortable bed.’’ Next year Hayward will cycle 1000 kilometres inside a monowheel in a bid to set two world records.

As our use of mobile technologies increases, more often than not, we’re using wi-fi to connect to the fixed-line network at our home or work. And it’s the fixed-line network that’s carrying the majority of the data load. The NBN will support better wi-fi in all Australian homes and businesses. With technologies such as optic fibre directly to the home, you and your wi-fi connected devices can access fast, reliable broadband. The National Broadband Network rollout is underway, find out more at australia.gov.au/nbn or call 1800 023 076.

Facts and benefits: • The NBN is designed to support Australia’s future broadband needs. • As the optic fibre network is rolled out, it replaces the copper phone network. • The NBN will support wi-fi in homes and businesses. • The NBN optic fibre network will be capable of providing broadband speeds up to 40 times faster than ADSL broadband. • The NBN will help Australians compete in the global economy.

Add flair to modern space This home is ready to move into or rent out, writes Carole Levy his property is one that demands attention from first-home buyers for its potential to receive personal creativity in its improvement, or investors for its readiness for tenants. The house itself has all the ingredients for immediate occupancy but the backyard is a large canvas crying out for colour, movement and function. Right now it’s lots of grass edged with narrow garden beds along fences. Past a front yard planted with flax amid pebbles, the entry hall has double doors to the right opening to the main bedroom; it has roller blinds (which appear throughout), a feature wall, walk-in wardrobe and ensuite with twin, square semi-recessed vanity basins and a heat lamp. The remaining two bedrooms with mirrored wardrobes are further along the hallway, as is the main bathroom with mosaic feature tiles and a heat lamp. The colour palette throughout is neutral with dark mocha accents and, along with the roller blinds, is quite streamlined and conducive to all kinds of furnishing. With a separate carpeted study (also suitable

T

as a fourth bedroom) tucked to the side, the family hub at the back is divided into tiled meals and carpeted sitting zones. The kitchen is breezily modern, with a long brekkie bench under pendant lights, ample cupboards and Technika dishwasher and 900mm gas cooker under a canopy range hood. The nextdoor laundry has storage closets. The property has ducted heating, evaporative cooling, an alarm system, a security system with facial recognition and a double garage with remote-control and back roller door.

A life of pleasure and Payne Michelle Payne has unbridled enthusiasm for her job as a leading female jockey, writes Rebecca Miller ichelle Payne is one of 10 children, eight of whom, including herself, are or have been jockeys. The Essendon resident says a love for the horse racing industry has always been in her family’s blood. ‘‘I’m from a racing family and have ridden all my life. I left school in Ballarat at 15, which was also when I had my first race at Ballarat racecourse and won,’’ Michelle says. ‘‘I couldn’t have achieved that without support from my family, especially my dad who’s also my trainer.’’ Michelle, 27, has been a professional jockey for 11 years and, until a recent fall stopped her training, she devoted all her time to her career. ‘‘Each week I travel about 1800 kilometres around Victoria for various races. I ride almost every day and three to four times a week I’m up at 3.15am for track work.’’ Despite her injury, Michelle hopes to make a

full recovery then ride for one more year and contest next year’s Cox Plate or Melbourne Cup. ‘‘I love horses, the racing industry and, of course winning! After all the effort involved, crossing the finish line makes it all worth it. ’’ The life of a jockey is far from easy with Michelle constantly watching her diet and sweating in a sauna or bath to shed weight for races. She says professional jockeys —male and female— have to weigh 50-59 kilograms. ‘‘I think I’ll retire in a couple of years to have kids. Horse racing is a dangerous sport. Many women retire younger to raise a family.’’ Michelle’s career highlights include riding for Bart Cummings and in England, Ireland, France, Switzerland, Mauritius and New Zealand. ‘‘Winning my first Group 1 for Bart then riding that horse in the Caulfield and Melbourne Cup in 2009, was a real highlight.’’ For young females interested in her career she says : ‘‘Work hard and never expect too much.’’

BY TEO PELLIZZERI SHANE Harwood’s first knock of the season proved a success as a century stand with Melton teammate Jeremy Liddy led a competitive score against Caulfield at the weekend. Caulfield entered the match with three wins from three and on top of Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association South-West. It made a strong start after Melton won the toss and batted. But Harwood and Liddy’s stand guided the visitors to 4-226 at stumps at Caulfield Park. Melton lost Michael Alexander (29) and Anthony Gale (1) in quick succession early to be 2-35, but steadied with a 73-run partnership between Patrick McKenna (47) and David Kirk (44). McKenna’s departure at 4-123 would be the last Caulfield success for the day as Liddy (41 not out) and Harwood (72 not out) batted out the 80 overs. Melton will look to continue its winning streak

in its title defence of the Legends and Heroes T20 competition tonight against Coburg in the second of four pool games in West Group. In Second XI, Melton’s John Jensen claimed four wickets, but the Lions couldn’t remove Caulfield before stumps, with the visitors to MacPherson Park reaching 8-278 at the compulsory close. In Third XI, Melton capitulated for 56 against Preston and could claim only two wickets before the home team reached 59 in reply. The loss knocked Melton (18 points) off the top of the ladder down to third, behind new leader Preston (21) and Williamstown in second (also 21). In Fourth XI, Melton (9-143) fell short against Preston (4-162). In Women’s Premier Seconds, Melton had no answers to Box Hill’s bowling attack as it was bowled out for 49 and beaten by nine wickets. Just a week after piling on 233 against Melbourne, the Melton bats failed to fire as the team was all out by the 24th over.

Phoenix faces life off the road BY TEO PELLIZZERI MELTON Phoenix has been swept up in a league restructure that has meant the end of provisional and metropolitan leagues in the Football Federation Victoria divisional set-up. A geographic restructure has put Melton in State League 5 West and although the club does not have a local rival in the Melton or Moorabool region, it does have a number of nearer rivals than it had in the season just completed. Road trips to Melbourne’s northern suburbs are a thing of the past under the new division system. From Victorian Premier League to state leagues 3 (north-west and south-east), the competitions remain the same. However, a major upheaval reassigns provisional leagues 1-3 and the metropolitan

leagues to new competitions known as State League 4 and State League 5. Both state leagues 4 and 5 will have north, west, south and east divisions of 12 teams each at state league 4 level and 14 teams each at state league 5 level. Playoffs will pit the north, west, south and east divisions against each other to determine an overall premier at the end of the league season. ‘‘I think it’s a long time coming,’’ Phoenix club president Steve Fuller said. ‘‘I don’t think it adds any glamour, calling yourself a provisional league or a state league club. ‘‘I guess the less travelling the better. You find if you’ve got teams close geographically you can build a bit more of a rapport.’’ Meanwhile, Danny Gnjidic has been reappointed

Melton coach for a second season in charge after leading the team to fourth in provisional league 3 north-west this season. Sunday competitions known as Thirds Leagues will now be renamed Metropolitan Leagues and will be restructured along similar geographic guidelines as well. FFV will release its fixtures for all competitions on January 21. FFV State League 5 West: Altona North, Balmoral (Derrimut), Brimbank Stallions (North Sunshine), Greenvale United, Keilor Wolves, Laverton Park, Meadow Park, Melbourne City (Spotswood), Melbourne Lions (Maribyrnong), Melbourne Tornado (Flemington), Melton Phoenix, Sunshine Heights Western Tigers, Truganina, Tullamarine City.

Bulls roar as batsmen pepper boundaries BY TEO PELLIZZERI

In the runs: Scott Wakefield hits through the off side on his way to a century for Bacchus Marsh. Picture: Darren Howe

BACCHUS Marsh’s revival in the Gisborne District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup gathered speed on Saturday as its star bats posted a mammoth total at Romsey Reserve. Second-last on the ladder, the Bulls put 9-322 on the board for Romsey to chase this weekend as they sent their second-placed host to all corners of the park. Scott Wakefield (108) and Kieran Atkin (82) shared a 164-run stand for the second wicket in the dominant partnership, coming together at 1-54 and taking the score to 2-218 when Wakefield fell. Atkin followed just two runs later at 3-220 in the start of a middle-order collapse of 4-15. But Peter Lalor (21) and Brenton Payne (17) stopped the rot, steadying the innings and allowing the tail to wag on the way to Bacchus Marsh reaching 80 overs. Aaron Paterson claimed the last three wickets to finish best of the bowlers with 3-27, while Chris Burkett toiled for 3-76 off 26 overs. At Rupertswood, ball dominated bat with 17 wickets falling for 160 runs on day one. Riddell appeared to have made a modest total after being bowled out for 120 only to stun Rupertswood and leave it 7-40 at stumps. At Woodend, it was the Adam Johnstone show as his 175 led Woodend to 6-315. At Wallan, Andrew Nicholls made 103 and Justin Colliss 80 as the hosts

posted 286 off 80 overs for Sunbury to chase this weekend. In B grade, St Anthonys lower order made up for a slow start to leave Bacchus Marsh second XI chasing 272 this weekend. St Anthonys lost regular wickets to be 6-111 batting first, only for Wes Greig (66) and Bobby Keeping (87) to swing the contest. Keeping and No.11 Rod Oosterhoff (six) shared an 83-run stand for the last wicket. Bacchus Marsh lost a wicket in the one over before stumps and will resume at 1-4 this weekend. In C grade, Diggers Rest Bulla Village will chase 228 this weekend after Ashfield’s Jason King (104) led the hosts to 227 all-out from 72 overs. In WDCA A1 Turf, Melton South is still searching for its first win after a 44-run defeat to Williamstown Colts at the weekend. The Colts made 6-171 off the back of Hanni Harb’s 107 and Melton South could manage only 127 in reply. Anthony Yates (26) was the only batsman past 20 for Melton South while Leigh Edwards’ 2-21 made him best of the bowlers. In A2 Turf, Melton Centrals could not overcome a top-order collapse as it lost by 34 runs to Bellbridge. In BCA, East Ballarat cleaned up the Darley tail to end any hopes of a close finish to win by 48 runs in first grade. Darley made a bright start, reaching 1-95 chasing East Ballarat’s 6-246. But regular wickets slowed momentum in the middle order before a collapse of 5-11 took care of the tail.
