A new-look police force is on the beat following the first major uniform change in decades. Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong and Wyndham police switch from the traditional light blue uniform this week to dark ‘salute’ blue. Other changes include shirt pockets for females and long-sleeved shirts. Geoff Kedge, Westgate Acting Superintendent, which takes in the three municipalities, said the new uniforms had been well received. “This uniform is fresh and modern and will be easily recognisable on the streets of Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong and Wyndham,” he said. “There were about 80 different ways to wear the uniform, so this change will ensure a more streamlined look for Victoria Police.” The new-look attire marks the first significant change in uniform for more than 30 years. \ BM

residents’ group rejects mayor’s ‘super council’ plan A Hobsons Bay residents group has rejected calls for its council to merge with Maribyrnong, suggesting instead the annexation of Yarraville. The Weekly recently reported Maribyrnong mayor Grant Miles’s personal view that Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong should merge to create one ‘super council’ as a way of cutting costs and reducing rates. But Cameron McCurley, co-convener of the Hobsons Bay Residents Association, said the suggestion had been made in the past and would be unacceptable. “Maribyrnong’s issues of ageing infrastructure and difficulty in generating a viable income, combined with an overall reduction in council funding by state and

greek ship’s skipper scuppers bay pollution claims PORTS

A ship’s captain has denied union claims that a Greek vessel polluted Hobsons Bay beaches by washing its hatches out into Port Phillip Bay. Captain George Mylonas has denied claims by the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) that the crew of MV Blue Eternity caused pollution by performing illegal hatch-cleaning just off the Williamstown foreshore.

Asked by the Weekly if the ship had cleaned out its hatch into the bay, Captain Mylonas responded via email: “Kindly be advised that our fleet trade and operate under all relevant international and local regulations, and there was no pollution.” The Weekly understands from reliable sources that the ship’s owner is struggling to pay its crew. ITF Australian representative Matt Purcell expressed fears that Melbourne’s port environment and beaches could be

polluted because of ship owners failing to pay Australian dockworkers to clean their vessels and properly dispose of waste. “The owners [of Blue Eternity] say that they’re complying with the regulations, but our understanding is, from my witnesses, that there could well have been some spillage of coal dust particles,” Mr Purcell said. A spokesman for Ports Minister David Hodgett said the union should provide evidence of wrongdoing or “cease making false accusations”. \ GD

car park closure leads to station chaos PUBLIC TRANspORT

Rail commuters who drive to Laverton station say there is chaos as a makeshift car park at a former school site has closed at the same time as new council parking restrictions come into force. About 500 commuters had parked in the grounds of the former Laverton Primary School before the Education Department barred access at the request of Hobsons Bay council. On Monday last week, the council started putting warnings on illegally parked cars around Laverton station, and motorists will soon be fined for violations. Sanctuary Lakes resident Nick Michaelides, who drives to the zone 1 station to catch a train to the city to work, said the parking situation was “a total shemozzle” with about “500 to 600 illegally parked cars” on the grass along the train tracks. The council has erected bollards to stop people parking on the grassland and created permit-only zones for residents. Hobsons Bay deputy mayor Colleen Gate said the council had argued strongly for the state government to address the parking issue. “A permit trial for 45 spaces began on Monday to ensure our residents are not disadvantaged by commuters who come from outside the municipality. “This will provide some relief for our

Williamstown residents are rallying in a last-ditch attempt to save a historic hotel from a developer’s wrecking ball. Evolve Development plans to demolish the Oriental Hotel (circa 1854) to build a six-storey, 83-dwelling apartment block as part of its much bigger development plans over several blocks of Williamstown. The dilapidated hotel is Williamstown’s second-oldest building and possibly the state’s first three-storey brick hotel. Heritage Victoria (HV) has recommended the building not be included on the state heritage register, with the Heritage Council (HC) to have the final say. Submissions to the HC close on April 21. Save Williamstown (SW) is holding a public rally at the hotel on April 13. SW spokesman Godfrey Moase (pictured) said he believed Evolve could afford to restore the building and the cost of restoration should not be a factor in the HC’s decision. “I think there’s a very significant public policy issue there for all of Victoria if people [building owners] can just get away with that [not maintaining a historic building].” Evolve managing director Ashley Williams partly blamed the state of the hotel on the long battle with the council. “The Oriental hotel building has been exhibiting significant decay and structural deformation for more than 20 years. “The uncertainty, delay and costs of a near 10-year planning process have only added to the pre-existing issues.” \ GOYA DMYTRYSHCHAK 10007721-01-a2Apr©MMP

The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) had crowdfunded $96,842 as of Tuesday towards its $100,000 target for a “food justice truck”. The truck will deliver discounted food to asylum seekers in Melbourne’s west who are living on as little as $3 a day and prohibited from seeking work. To receive the pledged money, the ASRC must reach a $100,000 “tipping point” in 11 more days, but its ultimate goal is $150,000. ASRC director of aid Patrick Lawrence said the truck would deliver food to people living on up to 89 per cent of Australia’s lowest dole payment and even some “getting nothing”. “We’re a local charity, the ASRC … for us to get to $100,000 is an extremely positive sign that a lot of people have simply had enough of the way we’re treating asylum seekers. “People are putting their money where their mouth is and saying we want to actively support them.” \ GOYA DMYTRYSHCHAK

VU staff brace for more job losses More than 170 jobs could go at Victoria University if management goes ahead with plans to outsource services, according to staff. Speakers at a forum held at the Footscray Park campus last Wednesday outlined a range of concerns over outsourcing, including a reduced service quality and loss of more jobs on top of 400 axed in the past two years. Senior lecturer Paul Adams (pictured) told the forum the university’s difficulty in retaining students would be exacerbated by outsourcing areas such as IT and childcare. “We’re really worried about the future of the university,” he said. “We’re worried [outsourcing] could destroy the institution.” Dr Adams, the National Tertiary Education Union VU president, said services crucial to the institution should continue to be run by the university. He said the management figures on outsourcing tenders understated the likely true cost. “It’s an ill-thought-out proposal,” he said. “There’s a lack of transparency, a sense of secrecy that things are happening behind closed doors. “It’s poor management and we’re saying ‘stop, think about it’, because it’s so hard to unravel something once it’s rolled out.”

(BENJAMIN MILLAR)

Outsourcing protest

University of Canberra staff member Katie Wilson spoke of a loss of morale at the university following outsourcing there. VU deputy vice-chancellor Professor Duncan Bentley confirmed further job losses were expected this year and said changes were necessary for the university to be a “well-run and efficient organisation that offers students the best possible experience”. “The university is looking at as many ways as possible to improve its efficiency, not simply job losses,” he said. He said the university would consider outsourcing where it could improve services to students and staff and allow focus on the “core business of teaching and learning, research and knowledge exchange”. \ BENJAMIN MILLAR

story of senseless world shines at sun theatre Film festival

A glimpse into a future where technology has made us forget how to use our basic senses has scooped three awards at the inaugural Setting Sun Short Film Festival. Senseless, directed by filmmaker Roman Meyer, received awards for best director, best screenwriter and best western suburbs film. Anna Bourozikas (pictured), director of the festival held at Yarraville’s Sun Theatre over the weekend, said it had attracted many quality entries despite being only in its first year. “All the finalists were of a high standard, but three in particular presented films of a high story-telling and production standard.” Bourozikas praised Meyer’s film for being beautifully directed, shot and edited. “Roman’s film showed great restraint in telling his unique and timely story.” Other winners included Second Chance (best animation, best non-west film) and Tofu Man (best documentary, best cultural diversity and people’s choice), directed by Sunshine’s Andrew Robb. \ BENJAMIN MILLAR

Eye in the sky Vanessa O’Hanlon shines in any weather, writes SARAH HARRIS

T

he slim blonde is delivering a piece to camera when from behind her lurches a snarling clutch of lost souls, blood streaming down their faces, arms outstretched. You won’t find it on Vanessa O’Hanlon’s official bio, but this is her secret zombie flick. Blink and you will miss her appearance in Dead Country – a movie far more horrible than horrifying which sank pretty much without trace upon release in 2008. Confronted with evidence from her undead past, the national weather presenter for ABC News Breakfast is remarkably gracious. “I don’t think I ever even saw it,” she laughs. “It’s just a tiny reporter part that someone asked me to do and I agreed to before I realised there would be zombies surrounding me.” While it’s highly unlikely that she’ll ever so easily fall into their clutches again, the zombie encounter underscores O’Hanlon’s willingness to step out of her comfort zone. Whether it’s climbing Mt Kilimanjaro, trekking the Kokoda Track, encountering gorillas in Uganda, travelling solo to Sarajevo, at the gym, or the hands-on renovation of a four-bedroom home in North Melbourne, O’Hanlon likes to push herself. She describes her steady ascent from Melton schoolgirl community radio volunteer to one of the national broadcaster’s more popular faces as one of “sheer determination”. This, after all, is a woman who for years spent much of her working day as a traffic reporter doing live crosses from a helicopter, feeling ever-so-slightly nauseated. “I don’t know if you have ever looked down in a chopper, but I used to get a little bit sick,” O’Hanlon admits now. For seven years, on and off, she reported on and filmed real-time road conditions, traffic congestion and accidents for all major radio and television stations including regular spots on Sunrise and the Channel 10 news. During that time she also worked as a host of Melbourne After Dark on Mix 101.1 and

WILLIAMSTOWN \ 11 ESPLANADE Built around the turn of the 20th century, this block-fronted Victorian shall be admired not just for its grandeur and preservation, but also for its land size (more than 1000 square metres) and waterfront position. Set back behind dense plantings and a large front yard with a decorative brick pathway, the

façade is part of a heritage overlay and directly faces the bay. A leadlight entry opens to a hallway with skylight, picture rails and high ceilings. Extra wide cornices and rosettes are other architectural staples. Originally, four huge bedrooms flanked a central hallway, but the house was reconfigured with archways in and between the rooms. One

is now a lounge with Gothic windows flanking a gas log fire beneath a period mantelpiece. Another room has a gas log fire, fitted wardrobe and access to an updated bathroom with clawfoot bath and pedestal basin. The large and light-filled timber kitchen at the back has cork floors, double-hung windows, a Dishlex dishwasher and a Chef oven cooktop with four gas burners.

A brick-paved side driveway provides off-street parking for up to four cars and links to a large backyard with an open gravel courtyard and outdoor bathroom. One of the best located properties in the area, it’s just a stone’s throw from Williamstown Beach, LA Parker Reserve and the Botanic Gardens. \ MARK BUNKER

WILLIAMSTOWN \ 94a Morris Street Home buyers looking for a new residence with plenty of luxury will find this Williamstown property meets those needs. The modern townhouse has bedrooms downstairs and living space up top. There are three bedrooms with built-in wardrobes and split systems and the main bedroom also has an en suite. A bathroom, a European-style laundry and ample storage are also at ground level. Both bathrooms have Gessi tapware and marble tiles. Upstairs is a large open-plan lounge-dining room and kitchen with marble benchtops and splashbacks, Miele stainless-steel appliances and soft-closing cabinetry. Features include refrigerated cooling and heating, polished brushbox floorboards, double-glazed windows and 3.3-metre ceilings. And outdoor havens, including a balcony, enclosed entertainment area and lowmaintenance courtyard, provide even more space to entertain. Off-street parking for two cars behind a remote-controlled door – accessed via Thompson Street – adds further appeal. Not only does the property have plenty of perks, its location does too. Cyril Curtain Reserve and the bay are across the road, Williamstown train station is within strolling distance and shops and restaurants are nearby. \

Much hardship and difficulty is caused to job-seekers by misleading advertising placed in employment columns.

All employment advertisements must state clearly the type of job offered and remuneration offered. (i.e. salary package, retainer plus commission or commission only). "Commission only'' jobs are only accepted in these columns PROVIDED that this is clearly stated in the ad AND the employer is paying Workcover and Superannuation. If not, then these advertisements MUST be placed in an alternate classification such as Self Employment Opportunities. Placing misleading advertisements is an offence against the Competition and Consumer Act and all advertisements are subject to the publisher's approval. For further advice contact the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission on 9290 1800. Nissan Juke ST-S What is it? Hard to say, really. What’s in it? A 140-kilowatt turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder with a six-speed manual. Is it thirsty? I used 10.5 litres per 100 kilometres in the city, 7.5 in the country. The official combined figure is 6.9. Nissan juke ST-S Drive away (Supplied)

eird cars pop up from time to time; it’s a cyclical thing. In 1983 there was Suzuki’s Mighty Boy, the most ludicrous ute in history. The company followed it with history’s most ludicrous convertible, the Cappuccino, although Daihatsu’s Copen gave it a nudge. Nissan has had some odd ones too, with limited-edition Figaros and S-Cargos, a few of which found their way here as private imports. Individuality to the exclusion of everything else is happening with SUVs, creating vehicles so niche you could hold a meeting of all potential owners in your living room. Pontiac’s Aztek for example, Kia’s Soul and Toyota’s Rukus. And now Nissan’s Juke. Get past its looks (that takes some doing) and the Juke is actually heaps of fun. It’s powerful and peppy, it has a light and fast manual gearbox and, hey, when you’re inside you don’t have to look at the outside of the car. Apart from the weird eyebrows atop the headlights anyway. Hang on. Are those things headlights? If so what are the big round numbers beneath them? Turns out the headlight assembly is split into separate top and bottom elements. Designers have ideas such as this after a long lunch and usually get put right by the boss. But here, well, maybe the boss was taking a sickie. Or maybe it was the boss’s idea. So it’s an SUV and, while only the top model ($35,787) gets four-wheel-drive, the underbody is clean enough to traverse

partially overgrown bush tracks. Stay away from sand and mud. What am I saying? This is a car for metro trendoids who go all shaky if they’re more than 10 minutes from the nearest cappuccino machine. The same ones who would have bought Volkswagen Ups if they were more powerful and didn’t look so much like Volkswagens. No such problem here. But here’s the surprise; although I’m about as trendy as warm beer, I became fond of this

strange little thing. It goes, stops and handles surprisingly well (the cost being the firm ride), it’s not expensive to run, it’s easy to park and well-equipped. The bonus is that it’s made well and comes with a strong warranty and good ownership package. One thing, though; people keep pointing and giggling. If you’re part of the Juke’s target demographic, you’ll like this; if you’re my age, you no longer care. \ reasdown@theweeklyreview.com.au

Thumbs Down Rear seats are tight, the 46-litre fuel tank means you’ll go to the servo lots, and people point and giggle. Things you didn’t know about motoring … Debris kicked up by horses’ hooves is called dash, and stagecoaches had wooden panels to deflect it from the driver. Hence the term dashboard.

BRIEFS Big V basketball Altona Gators began a seven-week period on the road in the Big V basketball men’s division 1 with a 90-79 loss to the Warrnambool Seahawks at The Arc Sports Stadium on Saturday night. The Gators started promisingly to lead by three at the end of the first period, but it all went pear shaped in a second quarter, in which they could manage only three baskets. Joey Mausar scored 17 points in an efficient manner, including five from downtown. Mausar’s ball handling was another story, though, as he committed seven turnovers. As a team, the Gators coughed up the rock on 26 occasions – not the kind of number sustainable in this division. The Gators slipped to 1-2 and are in desperate need of a win against the Melton Thoroughbreds at the Melton Basketball Stadium on Sunday. \ WRFL football The Western Region Football League begins with a full slate of games this weekend. The division 1 season opens on Friday night with a clash under lights between St Albans and reigning premier Deer Park at Kings Park Reserve. The round will continue on Saturday with Altona hosting Albion at Grant Reserve, Port Melbourne Colts and Spotswood renewing an old rivalry at Murphy Reserve, Sunshine and Yarraville-Seddon squaring off at Kinder Smith Reserve, and a Wyndham derby between newcomers Werribee Districts and Hoppers Crossing. The division 2 opening round also has a night fixture, with Wyndhamvale testing out its new lights at Wyndhamvale Reserve against Sanctuary Lakes. The remainder of the round will see Braybrook entertain a new-look West Footscray at Pennell Reserve, Caroline Springs at home at the Town Centre Oval against Laverton, defending champion Glenorden at Heathdale Oval against North Footscray, Sunshine Heights and Albanvale at Ainsworth Reserve, and expansion club Tarneit Titans against North Sunshine at Wootten Road Reserve. \ Athletics nationals Williamstown athletes produced outstanding performances to win three gold medals, three silver and four bronze at the Australian junior athletics championships at Sydney Olympic Park. Daniela Roman was at her brilliant best, winning the under-20 100-metre hurdles in 13.66 seconds. Roman came third in the 100 metre (11.72) and the 200 metres (24.36). Celeste Mucci had an outstanding championships, with a gold-medal performance in the under-16 90-metre hurdles in the time of 12.71. The same day, Mucci claimed silver in the high jump, on a countback, with a leap of 1.72 metres. In long jump, Mucci won gold with 5.49 metres, while on the final day of competition, she won bronze in the 100 metres with 12.40. Under-14 athlete Grace Goldsworthy had the fastest qualifying times going into the finals of the 200 metres and the 400 metres. In both finals, Goldsworthy ran close seconds to take home two silver medals at her first Australian

Ryhan Thomas claimed a bronze medal in the under-16 2000-metre steeplechase in six minutes 22.07 seconds. Cosimo Mucci joined his Victorian teammates to win the gold medal in the under-18 4x100-metre relay in 41.81. \ FFV soccer Altona Magic got its motor started in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1 with a 1-0 win over Fitzroy City in the season opener at Paisley Park Soccer Complex on Saturday night. A second-half strike from David Straniero was enough to see the Magic clinch all three points in a closely fought match. Altona East Phoenix made a flying start to the season, returning from an intimidating Western Suburbs with all three points. The Phoenix got the game’s only goal midway through the first half through Amos Masonga and held on for the win. Yarraville Glory played out a 1-1 draw in the state league 2 opener against Sporting Whittlesea at McIvor Reserve. Both goals were scored in a frantic first half, with the Glory’s coming through Keith Dunne. Altona City was the first local club to usher in the new league season with its regular Friday night game at Kim Reserve in state league 3. City made it a night to remember with a 2-1 victory over Lalor United. \ VNL netball VU-Western Lightning is breathing a sigh of relief after snapping a worrying two-game losing skid with a comfortable 61-42 win over cellar-dweller Ballarat Pride in the Victorian Netball League championship at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Wednesday night. The Lightning reclaimed its place in the top four and proved it can get the job done in the absence of star goalkeeper Fiona Themann. Themann has relocated to Scotland on her dual-citizen passport in a bid to be part of that nation’s Commonwealth Games team. “I’m really rapt for her and proud of her,” Lightning coach Matt Hills said. “She’s taken 12 months off from her school teaching and is living the dream.” Meanwhile, the Falcons made it seven-fromseven with a 53-34 win over Southern Saints at the SNHC. The Falcons again used three goaler options, with Kath Knott (23-from-27), Alice Teague-Neeld (20-from-21) and Julia Woolley (10-from-13) all earning their court time. \ LJ

NEW HEROES RISE FOR THE BULLDOGS Premier Cricket

Local leader: Homegrown captain Dean Russ leads Footscray Edgewater to its first premiership in 34 years. (MICHAEL COPP)

Western wonders: Footscray Edgewater is the pride of the west after bringing the Premier Cricket flag back across the West Gate Bridge. (ARJ GIESE/CRICKET VICTORIA)

Sons of the Scray has not been sung with as much gusto since the summer of 1979-80. On Sunday, Footscray Edgewater players, officials and fans belted out a rousing rendition of the famous song after clinching a long-awaited second Premier Cricket first XI title. The Bulldogs broke a 34-year premiership drought in style with a 360-run demolition of arch-rivals Essendon in the three-day grand final at Junction Oval. For so long, the 1979-80 premiership players have stood revered as the only Bulldogs to reach the summit, but now they will share the limelight with 11 new premiership heroes. First-year Bulldogs coach Steve Chapman was being hailed the mastermind of the operation in the post-game celebrations. It was Chapman’s second premiership in the competition as coach, the last being with Dandenong in 2010-11. He insisted that his 12 months of toil and guidance were only a small part of a bigger picture. “The strength of the club is only the people in it,” Chapman said. “It’s not about me, it’s about the club. It’s about the committee that does everything that needs to be done and sometimes doesn’t even get the thanks. “It’s pretty special for them ... it’s been the end of a 30-odd year wait for some people at the club.” True to his nature, Chapman was more observer than participant in the immediate aftermath of the victory. When Jake Haberfield took the match-winning wicket and raised both arms in the air in triumph, Chapman chose to take in the moment and look at what it meant for the club legends who had waited such a long time. “I stood next to Merv [Hughes], so I got

embraced,” Chapman said. “I just wanted to see the reaction of other people ... it was as much about looking at them and enjoying their enjoyment of it, rather than thinking, ‘Yes, I’ve achieved’.” Footscray Edgewater had a firm grip on the grand final from the outset. The Bulldogs posted a massive 8-526 declared to be in the box seat late on day two. Club professional Shanuka Dissanayake sewed up man-of-the-match honours with 175 not out, while Travis Dean put the exclamation mark on a sizzling summer with 138. Their big knocks would not have been possible without the upper order negotiating a way through the new ball on opening day. The Bulldogs’ declaration was about tactics, bravado and naivety. Tactical because the Dogs wanted to make inroads on the 10 Bomber wickets before stumps on day two; bravado because they could have batted on for as long as they wanted; and naive because Chapman was not totally aware at the time of the fourth day extension option if a first innings result is not achieved. “The bowlers were getting a bit tetchy and wanted to be out there,” he said. The decision to declare and bowl late on day two would reap massive dividends, with the Bulldogs having the Bombers reeling at 5-94 at stumps. Haberfield completed the rout on the third day to finish with 6-58 off 15.1 as the Bombers perished for 166. He was the leading wicket-taker in the competition with 59 at 14.8, forming a lethal new-ball combination in the final with John Hastings, who took 2-61 off 19. “They’re as good an opening pair as there is in the competition,” Chapman said. “If somebody is bowling with pace and you’ve got that fear factor – it can be the difference.” \ LANCE JENKINSON

the pro leaves best till last as he ‘BATs, BATs AND BATs’ WINNING KNOCK

Back in October, Footscray Edgewater coach Steve Chapman was understandably a little irritable. Not only did star opening batsman Wes Robinson return home to Western Australia after two games, but the arrival of replacement Shanuka Dissanayake was frustratingly delayed by red tape. Dissanayake eventually got his visa approved and took to the field for the first time against Greenvale Kangaroos in round eight, making a solid 33 on debut. But scores of six, nine and five followed, along with two ‘did not bats’, so it was not the ideal start for a club professional.

“When I had tough times on the field and off the field, they backed me all the time – maybe that’s why I hit that knock, because I wanted to do it for them.” As the team’s elder statesman, Dissanayake knew it was time to step up and he did so with a great innings. “I have the experience, so I knew I had to play a big role,” he said . “That’s why I didn’t throw my wicket away, even when I made 100. “I got out playing silly shots this year and the coach wasn’t happy. “But I said, ‘I’m not giving the wicket away’ ... just bat, bat and bat until I got the message from the change room. I’m proud of myself – it’s a good feeling.” \ LJ
