plug pulled on multicultural funding funding cuts

Community groups have been left high and dry by the federal government scrapping funding for already-announced projects, according to the multicultural sector’s peak body. Hundreds of thousands of dollars allocated to the inner-west under the Building Multicultural Communities Program has been stripped by the incoming government in a bid to cut costs. Funding announced last August and since withdrawn includes $137,000 for the Australia Light Foundation in Tottenham to build a multipurpose area for emerging communities; $55,000 for the Brotherhood of St Laurence

in Footscray to refurbish a hall and build a garden and children’s play area; and $41,000 for Footscray’s Vietnamese Community in Australia (Victorian chapter) to upgrade its facilities. Ethnic Communities Council of Victoria director Ross Barnett said the cuts would have an unfair impact on groups aiming to nurture Australia’s diversity. He said groups would have invested significant volunteer time and energy already towards the projects. “What we want to see is a return to a bipartisan approach to multiculturalism and cultural diversity at the federal level.” A spokeswoman for Social Services Minister Kevin Andrews said the government was reviewing spending “to ensure it is

aligned with priorities. Following the review, and in light of the current state of the federal budget, the government decided to reduce the scope of the Building Multicultural Communities Program.” Visiting the Brotherhood of St Laurence in Footscray on Monday, shadow citizenship and multiculturalism minister Michelle Rowland called the program funding cuts by the government “a disgrace”. “Tony Abbott and Kevin Andrews have cruelly cut grants to organisations in the Gellibrand community, many of which work with those less fortunate, in order to maintain cohesive and socially inclusive neighbourhoods,” she said. “The best way governments can help build

A lot of customers chose to shop elsewhere.” Mr Toner said the union was aware of a Coles contingency plan, but the absence of 400 workers for a second consecutive Friday was bound to affect supplies. Coles spokeswoman Anna Kelly said the industrial dispute was between the union and Linfox. “Coles’ priority is to ensure our customers are unaffected by any strike action,” she said. “We have put contingency plans in place to minimise the impact of any strike on our customers.” Linfox declined to comment. \ GOYA DMYTRYSHCHAK

Four hundred Linfox workers at the Coles Laverton distribution centre are poised to strike on Friday as they take their industrial campaign to customers in a bid to place pressure on the supermarket giant. National Union of Workers members last week started lobbying customers in their fight for pay and conditions equal to those of other warehouse workers supplying Coles. Linfox pickers and packers stopped work for 24 hours and collected signatures for a petition outside Coles at Altona last Friday. Union organiser Matt Toner said western suburbs workers were paid about $5 to $6 an hour less than those doing the same job at other warehouses. He said they received only one paid 15-minute break while their counterparts elsewhere received two. On Friday, hundreds of people signed the union’s petition, designed to put pressure on Coles and Linfox. “The reception from the western suburbs community was astounding – we were blown away by the level of support that people were offering,” Mr Toner said.

the pier they sometimes panic and grab on to the pier itself and the pylons are covered in barnacles and mussels and other creepy crawly things that can cut you up a bit.” Despite the Weekly previously heeding Parks Victoria’s request not to publish pictures of pier jumping, during last week’s heatwave the phenomenon was more evident than ever at Altona. Parks Victoria’s Graeme Davis said despite people not heeding warnings and serious injuries regularly occurring, education was favoured over enforcement.

Every year in Australia, there are up to 400 new cases of spinal cord injuries, 9 per cent of which are caused by water-related incidents. Nazim Erdem, who became a quadriplegic at 20 after diving off Elwood pier, said he was underwater for two and a half minutes before his mates realised something was wrong. “After I’d jumped off the pier and hit the bottom, I realised I couldn’t move any part of my body, which meant I couldn’t resurface,” he said. “Luckily, I’d been taught to hold my breath under water for up to three minutes.” \ GOYA DMYTRYSHCHAK

hospital closure a staffing issue Williamstown Hospital lacked enough staff to keep its emergency department (ED) open late on Christmas Day, Western Health (WH) said last week. WH acting executive director of operations Claire Culley said the ED closed at 5pm instead of 11pm in the interests of patient safety, and notification of the closure was given to employees once all avenues to staff the department had been exhausted. “Signage was clearly displayed, advising patients to present at the nearby Western Hospital ED.” Williamstown MP Wade Noonan said he had been contacted by constituents concerned about early closure. “The Williamstown community would be concerned at any reduction in the availability of emergency services locally, and the lack of adequate notice of these changes,” he said. \

Altona MP and Opposition public transport spokeswoman Jill Hennessy said the $50 million, 12-month trial would be running by New Year’s Eve, 2015. “If passengers vote with their feet, 24-hour weekend public transport will be continued and expanded where necessary,” she said. \

A man broke his ankle after leaping off Altona pier last week, prompting calls for more education as people continue to ignore warnings not to jump. Altona lifesaver Alyson Cooper said the man injured himself after jumping into shallows. “We can only advise that if they’re going to jump, to jump sensibly, whether that’s off the lower platform if it’s low tide – or just to not jump.” Altona and Middle Brighton piers, and Brooks Jetty at St Kilda are three of Port Phillip Bay’s most treacherous spots due to shallows, shifting tides and sand, and submerged debris. In 2008, 26-year-old Dale Russ crushed his neck and died after diving at St Kilda. Three tourists were rescued at Altona last month after jumping from the pier and becoming caught in a swell. Ms Cooper urged swimmers not to fear asking for help if they got into trouble. “I think sometimes they think that the lifesavers are there to tell them off or wreck their fun,” she said. “We’re there to make sure they’re all right, so if they get hurt or if they see someone in trouble, they come and ask. “Unfortunately, when people jump off

needle vending machine scheme flagged for west FOOTSCRAY

Footscray and Braybrook could be among the first locations in Victoria to host needle vending machines in a bid to cut infection rates among injecting drug users. Yarra Drug and Health Forum has flagged the machines as a 24-hour source of sterile needles, providing access when existing needle exchange programs are closed. Outgoing chief executive Greg Denham said the needles would only be accessible via a special token provided to users through

There are no legal reasons the machines cannot be introduced and Mr Denham expects they will appear within months in Footscray, Braybrook, St Kilda and North Richmond. Maribyrnong mayor Grant Miles said the council tentatively supported a trial. “The benefits of having clean needles available are well known,” he said. “There can be a bit of a misconception about how they work, but there is no way a child, for instance, could access the machines.” \ BENJAMIN MILLAR

Hobsons Bay councillor Luba Grigorovitch has resigned from the council, saying her new role with Victoria’s Rail, Tram and Bus Union would not enable her “to give 110 per cent”. The Victorian Electoral Commission will conduct a countback at 9am on February 13 to fill the council vacancy. Cr Grigorovitch, 28, is a second-term councillor representing Wetlands ward, comprising the suburbs of Altona Meadows, Seabrook and Laverton. The commission’s Thomas Harper said 4659 ballot papers that elected Cr Grigorovitch would be recounted. In November, Cr Grigorovitch made history as the first woman poised to lead the male-dominated, 8000-strong, blue-collar union. “I started the handover for my new role just on two months ago, before Christmas, and it was evident that being the state secretary and a councillor – it’s not doable,” she said. “I felt that I couldn’t do the job justice and I couldn’t give council the same level of attention and time as I was previously giving because I now have to give a lot more time to my day job.” Elected to the council in 2008, Cr Grigorovitch is also Hobsons Bay’s

believed he was unlikely to be elected. He said former mayor Carl Marsich, who received 14.75 per cent of primary votes, was “likely to be elected on the back of preferences from Cr Grigorovitch”. “If the election was to reflect the wishes of the community, I would be in the council,” Mr Hogg said. Mr Marsich said primary votes did not matter in a countback. “It’s quite a different system from what I can see,” he said. “I’ve noticed in some other councils, where someone might have had only a couple of percentage votes, they got elected basically as a result of the preference flow. Obviously, I was No.2 on [Cr Grigorovitch’s] ticket ... so I assume, obviously, I’d get a fairly good preference flow from that process.” \ GOYA DMYTRYSHCHAK

DENTAL CARE

Thousands of children in Melbourne’s west will receive free dental care under a scheme being rolled out this month. Medicare-funded dental care for children began on January 1, providing up to $1000 in dental services every two years for 3.4 million Australian children in families that receive Family Tax Benefit Part A. The $2.7 billion scheme is part of the $5 billion dental health reform package developed as part of an agreement secured by the Greens in forming a minority government with Labor. Greens health spokesman Richard Di Natale said the package was the most significant dental care reform in Australia’s history. “One in three people is unable to afford to see a dentist, but all that is about to change,” Senator Di Natale said. “This reform not only means millions of Australians will now be able to afford dental care, but it also lays the foundation for universal dental care in the years to come.” Western suburbs Greens MP Colleen Hartland said the six-year reform package was targeted at people on low and middle incomes. VicRoads has rejected a Maribyrnong council request for flashing speed limit signs on Somerville Road outside Kingsville Primary School. Parents and the council argue the decision fails to protect the safety of children crossing the busy truck route. The council wrote to VicRoads in August, seeking electronic flashing 40km/h school zone signs on Somerville Road, Yarraville, and outside Gilmore Girls College in Barkly Street, Footscray. The request followed a strategic risk assessment that reported a number of heavily laden trucks were failing to stop at red lights at the Kingsville Primary School crossing. “Somerville Road has a number of speed zone changes, which can be a problem for inattentive drivers,” the report stated. “Because of [the] overall environment, LED 40km/h signs for this location are considered essential.” But VicRoads regional director Patricia Liew said the signs would be installed only on roads with a 60km/h speed limit and carrying at least 10,000 vehicles per day. \ BM

8 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY WEEKLY \ JANUARY 22, 2014

I

’m generally pretty fired up, so I need to bring myself down,” says Australia’s defending Olympic aerial skiing champion Lydia Lassila. “For me, it’s more of a challenge to stay calm, stay chilled out.” Lassila is providing an insight into the silent minutes before a jump when she likes to visualise herself pulling it off. In 2006, the freestyle skier became a household name when she claimed gold at the Vancouver Winter Olympics in Canada. Four years on, the prospect of becoming a legend at next month’s Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, is looming with Lassila hoping to bag back-to-back gold medals in the snow. If successful, she will create history, becoming Australia’s first dual Winter Olympics gold medallist. Lassila grew up in Sunshine and began her sporting career as a gymnast at the Footscray City Gymnastics Club. When she was 12, her family moved to Diggers Rest and gymnastics became more than a pastime. She competed at the Niddrie Gymnastics Club and then moved into elite gymnastics at Methodist Ladies’ College in Kew. She finished high school at MLC, making the daily commute from Diggers Rest. By year 12, Lassila was coaching gymnastics and it was then she was quizzed about giving aerial skiing a go. “I hadn’t skied before and had no idea about it,” she recalls. “They reeled me in by saying, ‘You might have a chance of going to an Olympics.’ “It was the carrot dangling for me. I thought the worst that could happen is that you learn how to ski,” she jokes. In fact, Lassila did spend 1999 learning to ski, with her skills as a gymnast helping her pick up the techniques easily. A year later she was jumping and was hooked. The rapid rise continued and culminated with her competing at her first Olympics in February, 2002, in Salt Lake City. Less than a decade later – Vancouver, 2010 – Lassila became an Olympic champion. Her latest Olympic bid is now in full swing. In Switzerland last year, Lassila undertook gruelling challenges to perfect a new routine that she hopes will lift her to glory. The quadruple-twisting triple somersault, which adds an extra twist to the routine that won her gold in Vancouver four years ago, has never been successfully completed by a woman on snow. Understandably, training for the attempt has been physically and mentally draining. In the summer off-season, she practised every day on an artificial surface, taking off a jump and landing in a pool. She gradually built her skills, from single flips to double, then added twists and triple flips with twists. The process was repeated for days and weeks on end until it was clear in her head and she was confident enough to nail it on snow. “There’s a lot of impact on your body. It’s mentally draining to do this for six months. The harder the skill, the more difficult it gets mentally.” With mental preparation an important factor in her performance, a key component of Lassila’s preparation occurs away from the slopes. She employs sports hypnotist Jeffrey Hodges to and it’s heartbreaking to leave him.” Lassila is unsure increase her mental toughness and help her let go of any whether she will push on after the Winter Olympics. lingering negative experiences. “I’m going to leave that decision for 10 seconds after the “We work on different skills, like relaxation, final to see what sort of feeling I get.” visualisation, or anchoring a positive experience or Post Vancouver, she recalls thinking that if she won letting go of a bad one,” she says. she’d have been satisfied given the roller coaster ride At home in her downtime, Lassila finds yoga the best she’d been on. way of recharging her batteries. “I thought I would get that feeling, but I got the But she’s not home much. that,” she says. “In any world – corporate or sporting or a ‘mum’ world – you have days when you need motivation. You need to pick yourself up and that’s what sport has taught me.” Lassila says she’s heading into the Sochi Games feeling well prepared. There is an air of added anticipation, excitement and pressure as the defending champion, and she describes it as both frightening and exciting. “My body feels great, and I need to stay calm and keep it all together for the day.” The mechanics and aesthetics of jumping is what Lassila says she loves most, but it’s the adrenalin and fear it creates that keeps her coming back. “You’re always on the edge, riding that fine line and that’s what I love about it – but also hate about it. A lot of variables can affect you. You need to constantly adjust yourself. You have to be ready for anything.” \ avalente@mmpgroup.com.au JANUARY 22, 2014 \ MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY WEEKLY 9

party for painters The first rainbow crossing in Melbourne’s west will be painted on the road outside Altona’s Louis Joel centre on January 30. Hobsons Bay council is inviting the community to help paint the crossing between 4.30pm and 6.30pm, as part of Midsumma’s Go West festival. Council’s GLBTIQ committee head, Tony Briffa, said the crossing was aimed at letting people know they lived in a safe and respectful community. “The rainbow is a symbol of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer [GLBTIQ] pride,” Cr Briffa said. “By bringing the whole community together to walk the same colourful crossing, we are putting everyone on an equal footing, quite literally.’’ \ GD » midsumma.org.au/program/gowest

People will on Monday say goodbye to a public piano that has proved a hit at Altona’s Logan Reserve. Hobsons Bay is the only municipality in the west to host one of the pianos as part of British artist Luke Jerram’s Play Me, I’m Yours project. Touring since 2008, the project has installed more than 1050 pianos in 38 cities from New York to London to Melbourne. Emblazoned with the simple instruction ‘Play Me, I’m Yours’, the pianos are placed in parks, bus stops, railway stations and elsewhere for the public to enjoy. Fourteen-year-old Seabrook girl, Amelia Dunstone (pictured), was found tickling the ivories by the sea last week. “I think it’s good because it gets people more interested in music,” the year 9 Williamstown High School student said. The piano was donated by the Tondello family and painted by Laverton’s Urban Arts Collective at the Woods Street Arts Space. People can post and view films and photos of playing the piano online. \ GD

body of work pays off for high achiever

joy in achieving togetherness

A high-achieving St Bernard’s College student is a step closer to his dream of becoming an osteopath after being awarded a scholarship to Victoria University in Footscray. Science buff Luke Marinelli, 18 (pictured), received an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) of 93.3 in his VCE last year, achieving excellence in biology, outdoor and environmental studies, English, maths and studio arts. Mr Marinelli, of Essendon, said his interest in becoming an osteopath – a specialist in the musculoskeletal system – was sparked by his fascination with the complexities of the human body and studying biology at school. “I’ve always had an interest in biology and part of that is the human body,” he said. “Initially, I was interested in sports science and I looked at chiro and physio and found osteopathy was related. I researched it and decided it was the path I wanted to take.” Mr Marinelli said he was initially given a scholarship as part of a program that Victoria University has with schools in the western suburbs. But when his ATAR score exceeded 90, he was offered one of 100 prestigious scholarships for academic excellence. “I was stoked with my VCE score and it

made me even more happy to know one of my schoolmates would be offered the scholarship I was given initially,” he said. Mr Marinelli says his dream is to volunteer in Tanzania and Cambodia. He also wants to study abroad. “It’s a five-year course, but I think I can

tough it out because it will set me up.” The Victoria University scholarships provide students with an annual grant of $5000 for the duration of their course and also give them access to a mentor program with professionals in their chosen field. \ MELISSA CUNNINGHAM

A Yarraville organisation that supports people with a disability has joined forces with JOY 94.9, Melbourne’s gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex (GLBTI) community radio station. Annecto CEO Estelle Fyffe says she hopes like-minded people will connect through the radio show Absolutely Everybody, which airs Wednesdays at noon. Annecto spokeswoman Jodie Ann Henry says her organisation and JOY share similar views on inclusion. “The show gives us the chance to talk about a whole lot of different issues that affect marginalised people,” she says. The next show, on January 29, was inspired by this month’s stabbing death of long-term homeless man Wayne ‘Mousey’ Perry. A homeless person will be a guest, along with a representative from Kids Under Cover. “At Annecto, we call ourselves a community inclusion organisation. That means we’re really about people,” Ms Henry says. \ GD » annecto.org.au/absolutelyeverybody

Two of the west’s most recognisable artists are sharing their secrets and skills in workshops at Footscray Community Arts Centre (FCAC). Jessie Deane is holding a needlepoint masterclass this Saturday, while participants in Going Guerrilla 101 workshops – with street artist Baby Guerilla – will work together to create a paste-up for the centre. Following the success of her exhibition Needlepoint West, depicting Footscray’s iconic industrial landscape in needlepoint, Deane will be leading a masterclass in which artists will create their own needlepoint work. “I enjoy the sensual nature of creating cloth, and images on cloth, and I find the discourse surrounding questions of ‘craft versus art’ compelling,” Deane says. “I’m also interested in subverting a medium that’s traditionally considered quaint and pretty, to portray images which actually contrast to the domestic – industrial landscape, for example.” Baby Guerilla says she wants her art to have a social impact and open people’s eyes to the potential that public expression has towards a greater good. “I’m trying to enhance public space for the better, to improve the condition of the public

environment. I really believe this kind of work can make a difference to the community.” Her paste-ups have been steadily emerging across the inner-west over recent years, growing from small pieces to projects on an enormous scale. “I’m not sure how people view the work, but

the intention is to try and capture a sense of freedom.” Going Guerrilla 101 workshops will be held at FCAC from noon-4pm Saturday, February 8 and 15. \ BENJAMIN MILLAR » footscrayarts.com

a spicy ’scray stew brews FOOD FESTIVAL

Take a whirlwind tour of Footscray’s culinary world as part of the mouthwatering Eat.Drink.Westside program. From February 28 to March 16 there will be a smorgasbord of flavours centred upon this year’s theme of water. Maribyrnong mayor Grant Miles says nine events will provide authentic experiences in an area blessed with cuisines from all around the globe. His invitation: “Discover our city’s foodie gems by sampling Vietnamese cuisine while riding a rickshaw, mop up Ethiopian stews with traditional injera bread, learn about Australia’s indigenous heritage and its connection to the Maribyrnong River, or you can head straight to the source at the wholesale fish markets in Footscray.” Participants can immerse themselves in Ethiopian gastronomy and folklore at Konjo Café and Restaurant; experience the sights, smells and tastes of brewing at Grain and Grape; or enjoy a three-course lunch based around the three water signs of the zodiac at the Plough Hotel. Visitors can also receive a run-down on how seafood gets from ocean to the plate and take a ‘wild food walk’ along the Maribyrnong. And they can

DANCE 2014 ADVERTISING FEATURE

steps to personal success

I

“You need patience and a real love for it and it’s that love that helps you continue.” Serle says he likes contemporary dance and choreography for different reasons. “When I perform in the dances I have choreographed it’s stressful but rewarding. If I’m dancing in another person’s performance I can relax more and not worry about whether the audience is enjoying it.” Now 31, Serle says his main focus is choreographing. “I want to continue making and performing dance works in Australia and overseas. I’ve only created a couple of my own works, so I hope to gain momentum with that. I hope to live overseas for a period of time. I’m not sure when or where yet.” \ REBECCA MILLER

t was a friend’s invitation to Melbournebased contemporary dancer and choreographer Lee Serle to a “bring a friend day” at a local dance school when he was 11 years old that started Serle’s interest in performing arts. “I used to make up dances in my lounge room, then I learnt a jazz routine at my friend’s dance school,” recalls Serle [pictured], who has performed with renowned dance group Chunky Moves. “In high school I started tap dancing, ballet and contemporary dance and from the age of 16 I was involved in a lot of commercial gigs. It was then I realised I could make a career out of something I loved.” After studying for a bachelor of dance degree at the Victorian College of the Arts, the then 21-year-old went on to perform here and abroad. “I’ve enjoyed performing in New York at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, at the Edinburgh Festival and the Sydney Opera House.” Serle says it takes a lot of hard work and sacrifice to make it in the performing arts industry. “There’s not a lot of money or security in dancing or choreography. And you sacrifice your body. Mine is always pretty sore and exhausted.

This landmark property, Carnmoney, is a block-front Victorian beauty ready for a lucky buyer to call home. A hallway with ornate ceilings and wide archway leads to three large bedrooms and a formal lounge room, all with fireplaces. The bathroom has timbered walls and ceiling and includes a shower-over-bath and leadlight window. The country-style timber kitchen is another feature, as is the adjoining dining area with timber ceilings and polished benches. Outside, there’s a brick-paved courtyard and verandah. The house is built on solid bluestone foundations and sits on a corner block of about 55 square metres with rear car access. In a quiet spot, the east-west-oriented block absorbs maximum amounts of natural light and is a stroll to cafes, parks, Newport railway station and The Strand waterfront. \

This double-storey house has a lovely ambience, and its bluechip suburb location offers an edge for cashed-up couples and downsizers. Set in the esteemed Rifle Range estate, the property has been lovingly maintained. The ground floor contains a large open-plan kitchen with white appliances and a dining and living area which provides views to landscaped gardens. Three bedrooms are upstairs. A bathroom and powder room are shared by two of these rooms, which have built-in wardrobes and balcony access, while the main bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite with spa. The outdoor highlight is an open-paved entertainment area via french doors, while extras include heating and cooling, a security system, fireplace and floorboards. It’s all within walking distance of shops, schools, North Williamstown train station, parkland, bike paths and Jawbone Marine Sanctuary. \

It was lucky round number 13 for YarravilleFootscray in the Bowls Victoria metro premier division. The newly promoted Bulldogs finally broke their drought in the most unlikely fashion, upsetting premiership contenders Moonee Ponds by 15 shots at Francis Street on Saturday. Bulldogs coach Wayne Roberts told the Weekly that a win was never too far away, but he didn’t envisage it would come against the powerful Ponds. “Even though it was our first win, there have been a lot of games where we’ve been in it until the three-quarter stage and fallen over at the last hurdle,” he said. “The last game before Christmas, we were in front of Altona at the break, and the break worked against us because it got them off the green and they re-grouped when the momentum was going our way. “We’ve only really had two shockers for the year, one against Clayton, the other against Moonee Ponds in the first round. All of the other games were there to be won or we’ve fallen over by 10-or-so shots. “The first win is the hardest to get.” Yarraville-Footscray took advantage of the Ponds’ controversial decision to send a handful of first-team regulars down to play in the seconds. The Ponds’ second side plays in division 2, already a two-tier drop for players who don’t make the final cut for the premier side. Should that side be relegated, it would have significant consequences by creating too large a gulf between the first and second sides. They were desperate to strengthen their survival bid in division 2 with a much-needed win and chose to roll the dice against Yarraville-Footscray in what could prove to hinder their chances of a premier division home final. Roberts had no issue with the Ponds’

Williamstown gave club stalwart Grant Sandars a 200th first XI game to savour with a nine-wicket win over Endeavour Hills in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association at Sydney Pargeter Reserve on Saturday. Sandars is only the second Seagull player to achieve the milestone , with Jack Barnes having played 248 games between 1932-33 and 1951-52. Sandars made a duck, but his teammates picked up the tab – as he has done on so many occasions in a VSDCA first XI career that started back in 1993-94. Endeavour Hills could muster only 9-144 off its 45 overs. Nathan Bratby was the chief destroyer for the Seagulls with 4-38 off nine overs, while Cain Speakman (2-10) and Nathan Hall (2-25) chipped in with important spells. Williamstown cruised to the target in a touch over 35 overs. When Sandars departed with the score on 1-1, captain Craig Sheedy (64no) and youngster Matthew Dervan (63no) combined for an unbroken 144-run stand to lead the Seagulls to just their second win of the summer. Altona strengthened its hold on a top-six berth with a bossy six-wicket win over Bayswater at the Frank Kirk Oval. Set a tough 197 for victory, the A’s passed the target with ease, thanks to half-centuries to Aaron Maynard (81no) and Tim Collins (56). Yarraville suffered a 49-run loss to Box Hill and dropped to second-last. The Eagles were bowled out for 178, with Curtis Maguire’s 79 making the only significant inroads into Box Hill’s 5-227. \ LJ

decision to stack the seconds and didn’t see it as a disrespectful move. “They rang me on Tuesday to let us know what was going on,” he said. “I said, ‘That’s fine, you’ve got to do the right thing by your club and I totally understand’, because they’re in a situation where they’re a premier side and their next side is division 2, so if they lost that side to division 3 their own structure would be no good. The players who came up were all good players.” Yarraville-Footscray led overall from go to whoa, but the four rinks were split two apiece

metro west back on top Bowls

Metro West has shrugged off its underdog tag to claim its fifth Bowls Victoria state region sides title in eight years. Feared in years past, the west’s best were an unfamiliar outsider for this edition but were more than happy to play the role of giantkillers at the Corowa showdown. “It was pretty satisfying because we didn’t go in as favourites as we had in other years,” captain Snowy Barker said. Metro West was filled with players from only three clubs in the 19-club region. Nine of the 12 players came out of metro premier club Altona; two came from

Barker’s home club Werribee and one from Deer Park. The concentration of players from only three clubs made it a seamless transition from club to representative level. “There was not that much needed to motivate them,” Barker said. The finals were tight and tense. Metro West shocked Sandbelt 46-44 in the semis to book a grand final date with Murray Mallee, the side that knocked it out at the semi-final stage last summer. In the final, Metro West got up 47-43, but only after surviving a late scare. “The final got pretty close,” Barker said. “It was definitely down to the wire.” \ LJ

on the day. The deciding rinks were thumping victories to Roberts (31-11 and Alan Dove (28-9). “We had a good day, one out of the box,” Roberts said of his side on the whole. “We just fired up at the right time.” Yarraville-Foostcray will be hunting consecutive wins when Bundoora RSL rolls into town on Saturday. Meanwhile, Altona softened up Bundoora with a 92-62 hammering on the road on Saturday. The A’s have moved to within 12 points of the top four. \ LANCE JENKINSON

memorial race a fast-paced affair Cycling

After a week of 40-plus-degree temperatures, the Footscray Cycling Club’s Max Campbell Memorial was held in cool and overcast conditions at Altona’s Drake Boulevard, a perfect day to honour a man who raced and volunteered at the club for more than 50 years come rain, hail or shine. The A-grade race was over almost as soon as it began with a casual Adrian Hanson rolling off the front of the bunch on the first lap, to be joined by Dom Dudkiewicz. Dudkiewicz, 30, has been in unbeatable form but was still surprised that such an early two-man breakaway survived. “We started the race and I saw Adrian Hanson and Jason Costin just riding, not attacking off the front, and then we got

around the top corner and I saw Adrian just casually increasing the distance from the bunch,” Dudkiewicz said. “I was about to jump when Adrian went, so as I went past him I said ‘Let’s do this!’ so he got on my wheel. “I think the first few laps averaged 46-odd kilometres an hour and I thought it was too early as we had to do this for over an hour, but we just kept working and kept the lead at about 30 seconds.” In the last laps, behind the dynamic duo, the situation could only be described as carnage, as attacks broke the bunch up into broken lines of riders, with Graham Carlson trying to bridge the gap. Dudkiewicz came out of the last corner and passed Hanson, taking the win with Hanson a few bike lengths behind, followed by a lonely Carlson, third. \

state league season to get early start Netball

The Victorian Netball League will start its season two weeks earlier than usual to avoid clashes with the Australian Netball League schedule. The 2014 season will begin on February 12. Netball Victoria coaching development co-ordinator Nicole Richardson told the Weekly the move to an earlier date was to ease the workload on ANL-aligned players and ensure the VNL finals are not compromised.

“Last year, the workload placed on those players was quite high and teams in finals that had ANL players playing for them weren’t having access to those players at training and that made it difficult,” Richardson said. The VNL draw, released last week, pits City West Falcons against neighbours VU-Western Lightning in the opener at the State Netball and Hockey Centre. The Falcons’ grand fi nal rematch with Peninsula Waves will take place in round 11. \ LJ

falcons in combat mode Netball

City West Falcons have never been afraid to shake up their methods to stay ahead of the game in the Victorian Netball League. The Falcons are the most successful club in the competition’s history and have been trend-setters with their out-of-the-box training practices and game-day tactics. The two-time defending champions will again have a target on their back and know the bar will have to be raised in order to achieve a three-peat. Their latest weapon is Challenge Laser Skirmish, a combat game the whole squad took part in earlier this month. Falcons assistant coach Nicole Richardson told the Weekly the weekend training camp in Wallan ticked all of the boxes. “It was something a little bit outside of the square for us,” she said. “We were looking for something a little bit different, and laser skirmish fitted the bill. “It achieved both of our goals in terms of challenging them physically and mentally while providing a bit of fun for them.” In a laser skirmish, two teams of players were fitted out with laser taggers and a hat with sensors attached. The taggers – or weapons – have different range, weight, clip size and reload time, meaning tactical nous is pivotal to success. “They were all outside their comfort zone,” Richardson said. “I don’t think many of them had played it before so it was a level playing field for all the girls. “You could really see them having to work together strategically to come up with the best option to win the game.” Maggie Lind had the eye of the tiger on the range. “She would put herself up as one of the hot snipers of the team,” Richardson said. It is a big season for Lind, who will move into the mid-court in a team re-shuffle forced by the return of star goaler Kath Knott. Knott, on the comeback trail after a knee injury ruined her 2013 season, has been given the green light to return to competitive action on a time limit.

She will partner her sister Julia in the attacking circle. “It was pleasing to see her get through the camp unrestricted,” Richardson said. “She’s pulled up well post camp and it was good to see her running around out there.” Alice Teague-Neeld will move from

division 1 to the championship side to add depth to the front court. The Falcons’ first competitive action will be two practice matches against ANZ Championship side Melbourne Vixens, with the second taking place at the State Netball and Hockey Centre this afternoon. \ LANCE JENKINSON

Indefatigable import Travis Bass has underlined his importance to the Newport Rams with a starring role in an 11-1 mercy rule win over Doncaster Dragons in the Baseball Victoria summer league division 1. Bass worked the mound as the starting pitcher on Sunday, throwing a complete seven-inning game and returning a superb 12 strikeouts. Bass touched down in Melbourne two hours before throwing his first pitch after a flight from Adelaide and coaching commitments with the Victorian under-14 baseball team. Rams assistant coach Gavin Young said it spoke volumes of the passion and commitment that Bass and Jeremy Young – also a Victorian under-14 assistant coach – have for the club and the game. “They jumped straight off the plane and went out ready to play,” he said.“We’ve got guys who just love the game and want to participate no matter what.” You couldn’t get the ball out of Bass’s hands. He went the journey before the umpire called the game under the 10-run rule. Bass’s ability to go the whole seven innings was a godsend for coach Grant Weir, who got to rest his other pitchers ahead of a midweek return clash with Doncaster, played last night after the Weekly went to press. “It was good for us to not use up any other pitchers because we have to face them again,” Young said. “It leaves Griffin Weir, Jeremy Young and Matty Lawman all fresh.” The Rams had plenty of runs to play with as all nine in the order got at least a hit. Jordan and Jeremy Young, Scot Malthouse, Zac Seipolt and Tyson Foreman all picked up two hits apiece. “Everyone responded,” Young said. “If we play as a team and bat right through the line-up, we’re hard to stop against any side.” The play of the day went to shortstop Matthew Lawman, who saved a run when bravely neglecting a guaranteed out at first base to throw out the runner at home plate. It was the moment that snuffed out any Dragons’ hopes of a comeback. “He saw the guy hesitate and threw to home instead of first base and saved a run,” Young said. “Someone with his experience and his ability – to make that play was just awesome. It makes a difference when someone pulls a big play like that ... it shut them down. It lifted everyone that little bit more.” The Rams face western suburbs rival Sunshine away at Barclay Reserve on Saturday. \ LANCE JENKINSON
