Patience wearing thin with hotel ‘eyesore’ BY STEPHANIE ZEVENBERGEN

Scott McNaughton

RESIDENTS are ramping up efforts to have the remains of the Diggers Rest Hotel demolished, almost five years after the pub was destroyed in a blaze. They are petitioning Melton council to have the remaining “eyesore” levelled. Alternatively, they want the council to approve a planning permit to allow the site to be redeveloped. A deliberately lit fire in October, 2008, destroyed most of the building; some walls and the chimney remain but are part-covered in graffiti. As reported by the Weekly, there has been a long-running battle between the council, residents and the hotel’s owners over a resolution. In 2010, 101 letters were submitted to the council demanding action on the site. The hotel’s owners have expressed interest in rebuilding, but cost and heritage issues have proven difficult. Diggers Rest resident David O’Connor said that with the fiveyear anniversary approaching,

the community simply wanted a resolution. An online community survey undertaken by Diggers Rest Community Web Links showed 76 per cent of respondents wanted the remains of the 1854 pub demolished. “The burnt-out remains have been left to rot and the decaying structure is of no social or historical benefit to our community,” Mr O’Connor said. “It has always been my wish as a resident to see the hotel redeveloped using most of the existing structure. Five years later, the hotel remains are considered by many residents as a blight on our community.’’ Mr O’Connor said he would keep circulating the petition before presenting it to the council before October’s anniversary. Council general manager of planning and development Luke Shannon said any petition put forward by residents would be considered in the decision-making process. “Council has paid for a heritage architect to do modelling of the site and provided the owners with a number of options.’’

Hotel horror: Residents David O’Connor, Alex Jinks and Stephen Hill want what’s left of the Diggers Rest Hotel demolished.

Residents rally to councillor criticised for cardboard Napthine ‘stunt’ respect to receive respect”. Cr Tom Sullivan called Cr Dudzik’s use of the cutout a “sideshow”. Three residents spoke against the motion, including former mayor Pat Griffin, who deemed it confusing and a breach of public confidence after such a “benign” display. “Councillors only need to report to those who democratically elect them every four years,” Mr Griffin said. “Cr Dudzik had the most votes, and part of her role is to ask the government for money.”

that the shire council has any kind of useful working relationship with the premier.” Cr Dudzik said she had since called the premier’s office to advise she meant no disrespect and discussed the matter with the Municipal Association of Victoria. Cr Sullivan said no further steps would be taken. “[It’s] behind us now, and we just need to move forward for the good governance of the municipality,” he said.

This argument was supported by Maddingley Park committee chairwoman Margaret Scarff and resident Chris Huculak, who cited the councillors’ code of conduct. “She acted with integrity and impartially exercised her responsibilities in the interests of the local community,” Mr Huculak said. “The state government’s procrastination over the Eastern and Halletts Way freeway interchanges is the single most important issue facing this town. MOORABOOL residents have come out in support of councillor Tonia Dudzik, after the council passed a motion condemning her presentation of a life-sized cardboard cutout of Premier Denis Napthine at last month’s meeting. The motion – which said council did not support Cr Dudzik’s actions because they were disrespectful to the premier and brought the council into disrepute – was passed by a 4-3 vote. But Cr Dudzik said the matter had been dealt with inappropriately.

PARENTS want space for a secondary school included in a revised Ballan structure plan after meeting to discuss locations last week. Their campaign is being led by TAFE teacher and Ballan mother Gail Fiander, who says the town’s growing population will need its own high school within a few years. Ms Fiander, who has launched a Moorabool-wide petition, said parents wanted space set aside in the structure plan so a school could be built once Ballan reached the required population threshold. “We’ve been told by federal MP Catherine King that if we get it included, there’s a greater chance we’ll get it zoned,” she said. Ms Fiander said parents often had to choose between extra-curricular activities for one child in Ballan and school pick-ups for a sibling in high school in another town. ‘‘They just can’t be in two places at once,’’ she said. ‘‘A lot of sacrifice is being made, of time and sleep. ‘‘Where’s the time for them [students] to study? My son is in year 7 at Mount Clear Secondary College in Ballarat, and for him it’s a 10-hour day.” The campaign for a school is supported by East Moorabool ward councillor Tonia Dudzik, who said the fight would be fruitless unless land was put aside. “If the area’s fully developed without taking [a school] into account, then we’re not going to be able to build one,” she said. Council projections show Ballan’s current population of 2889 will reach 3164 by 2019 and 3508 by 2027. The Education Department has complex criteria an area must meet before getting a new school. A

spokeswoman said the usual longterm enrolment target was 1100 students. “Usually this would require a potential opening enrolment of at least 300 and an expected growth rate of 150 a year to reach long-term enrolment of 1100,” she said. Ms Fiander said there was widespread support in Moorabool for the school, meaning numbers would be achieved quicker. “I’ve had parents from Bacchus Marsh who’ve said they’d send their kids to high school in Ballan,”

‘I’ve had parents from Bacchus Marsh who’ve said they’d send their kids to high school in Ballan.’ she said. “We’ve had support from Gordon, Mount Egerton, Mount Wallace and Myrniong.” But Moorabool mayor Pat Toohey said the likelihood of a high school being opened in Ballan before a second school in Bacchus Marsh was remote. He said Bacchus

Marsh’s population would reach 20,000 before Ballan crossed the threshold. A department spokesman said communications between the Ballan-based residents group and the department were under way. “Ballan families have access to a number of government secondary schools in Ballarat, Bacchus Marsh and Daylesford,” he said. “Schools in these towns have capacity for new students and are all within a reasonable distance of Ballan.”

Western Water has switched Melton’s drinking water from Melbourne water to the Merrimu Reservoir supply system. The switch has kept price rises to less than 5 per cent, compared with increases of about 20 per cent in Melbourne.

Restaurant’s flood relief Bacchus Marsh’s Royal Indian restaurant will donate 10 per cent from every bill this month to a charity helping victims of the Uttarakhand floods in northern India. More than 1000 people have died as a result of last month’s floods, with many more missing.

We want it somewhere where it’s easier for both residents and staff to access.” The need for aged care in Moorabool is expected to increase dramatically, with council projections showing that the number of residents aged 75 and above will rise from less than 1250 in 2006 to more than 2400 by 2021. Ballan nursing home is the only aged-care facility between Ballarat and Bacchus Marsh. Residents Ray and Mary Smith said staff members were wonderful,

MANAGEMENT of Ballan’s only nursing home says it desperately needs an upgrade, with several rundown rooms unable to be used and only one living room available for residents to see visitors. The nursing home, part of Ballan District Health and Care, is 50 years old. Although it has been steadily maintained, primary health manager Jamie Brennan said it needed urgent improvements. “We’re now at a point where what we’re doing ourselves is just cosmetic,

but what we need is a full overhaul,” he said. Ballarat Labor MP Catherine King and new federal Mental Health and Ageing Minister Jacinta Collins were today expected to tour the nursing home, with management seeking extra funding to update facilities. The nursing home offers 24-hour personal support for 10 high-care patients, with individual supervision, assistance and attention. Mr Brennan said management was planning larger rooms with individual en suites. “Currently, they’re double suites that share a bathroom – we

BALLARAT MP Catherine King says her new role in federal cabinet won’t detract from her work in her electorate. Ms King has been appointed Regional Services, Local Communities and Territories Minister in Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s reshuffled cabinet. “I’m still the local member, so I will continue all of that work that I do,’’ she said. ‘‘The new role provides people of the Moorabool Shire an avenue to come and talk to a minister directly. They’ll have good access to me. “I learn things all the time from regional communities. A lot of what I understand about communities comes from local government in my own electorate.” Ms King, the Ballarat MP since 2001, joins five other women in the new cabinet. “It’s terrific to have more women in cabinet; in fact it makes you feel more supported to use your voice,” she said. “It can be difficult when you’re the only one at the table, so having the other women there is really great. “I’ve worked very closely with them for a long period of time. We often share views in common. But, apart from that, my role is to argue regional issues from around Australia and I’m not backwards in coming forwards.” Ms King said she planned to advocate on behalf of groups and projects that were unsuccessful in the last round of the Regional Development Australia grants, including the proposed Bacchus Marsh Aquatic Centre.

CatholicCare in Melton has received $50,000 to expand its Team Assimilation – Basketball and Soccer (TABS) project. Gorton MP Brendan O’Connor visited the group (pictured) last week to announce the grant under the federal government’s diversity and social cohesion program. The sports project aims to address racial intolerance towards newly arrived migrants in Melton, particularly in African and Burmese communities. CatholicCare senior manager Nick Collins said the program had run for 12 months. “CatholicCare, with the assistance of the diversity and social cohesion grants program, has provided sports clinics to 96 children and young people in basketball and 20 engaged in soccer.”

RESIDENTS fear Bacchus Marsh organisations could “go straight to culling” a swarm of corellas near Maddingley Park instead of trying non-lethal methods first. The Weekly has viewed a ‘populous place permit’ issued to Bacchus Marsh Coaches by Victoria Police. The permit allows a shooter to use a category-A firearm – shotguns, rifles and airguns – to eradicate corellas between 4.30 and 5.30pm. Moorabool council and Bacchus Marsh Coaches deny any shooting has taken place, stating they are investigating the use of a scare gun to ‘‘relocate’’ the plague. A council spokesman said the native birds had damaged oval lighting and large turf areas. The birds are also affecting the nearby bus company, damaging trees in front of the property and chewing

electrical wiring, roof grommets and aerials and wiper blades on vehicles. Cr David Edwards said corella numbers had soared from 1500 to 5000 in 18 months. “Arborists who have visited said that’s why [trees are] starting to drop limbs,” Cr Edwards said. Council applied to the Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI), police and the Environment Protection Authority for permits. DEPI senior compliance officer Jim O’Brien said non-lethal scaring was recommended as a deterrent measure. “An authority to control wildlife permit has been issued as a last resort,” Mr O’Brien said. Dave Nickels from Bacchus Marsh Coaches said gas guns, netting and releasing, birds of prey, and shooting “just one or two to deter others” were tactics that could be used to solve the 12-month problem.

MELTON is among Melbourne’s worst areas for car theft. RACV data released last week showed 13 cars were stolen in Melton and eight in Melton South in the year to December. Melton was ranked seventh for vehicle thefts, behind St Albans (19 vehicles), Frankston (17), Epping (17), Reservoir (16), Werribee (16) and Craigieburn (14). Overall, 921 claims for theft were lodged by RACV members in metropolitan Melbourne, while 1111 claims were received statewide. TAFE plan has ‘failed miserably’ BY BENJAMIN MILLAR

Win, prize in the bag for Kristee

supplied

Visitors to Lerderderg and Ballan libraries can get their hands on a tote bag designed by Bacchus Marsh’s Kristee Trask, 17. Kristee (pictured with library services coordinator Dale Johnston) was the winner of a Moorabool council competition open to residents aged 12-25. Competition judge, mayor Pat Toohey said her leaf design reflected Moorabool’s affinity with nature and its vast bushland and state forest areas. The bags can be purchased for $2.

SAVAGE state government cuts to TAFE funding have forced steep drops in enrolments, new figures reveal. The Education Department’s 2013 Victorian Training Market Quarterly Report – the first enrolments analysis since the cuts took effect last July – shows 22,000 fewer students are pursuing TAFE training than a year ago. The $1.2 billion in cuts over four years has devastated the sector, according to Footscray MP Marsha Thomson. Victoria University deputy vicechancellor Anne Jones said VU had expected a drop in TAFE enrolments for this year due to the loss of a number of courses in the wake of last year’s cuts. “We expected and planned a 25 per cent decrease in VET delivery,” she

said. “Our first-quarter figures were still a bit lower than expected, but early enrolments were slow and did pick up in April.” Professor Jones said the report showed an overall decline in the Victorian TAFE market. However, the university was confident about its future, including plans for a trades academy based at its Sunshine campus. Ms Thomson said the figures showed fewer enrolments in courses the government claimed to be of greatest public and economic importance. “Whatever Premier [Denis] Napthine and Skills Minister Peter Hall have tried to do with TAFE, it has failed miserably,” she said. “But the tragedy here is that these figures also show that, as we have said all along, the cuts are preventing the most vulnerable from learning a skill to get a job.”

From 1 July, Australia’s current support system for people living with disability is being progressively replaced with DisabilityCare Australia. This new scheme will help provide a better quality of life for Australians with a significant and permanent disability, and for their families and carers too.

What’s new about DisabilityCare Australia? DisabilityCare Australia is a new way of funding personalised support for people with disability. As well as looking at a person’s immediate needs, it will take a lifelong approach and enable people with disability to have choice and control over their supports. It will focus on early intervention, recognising that timely support can minimise the impact of a disability on individuals, families and carers. Assistance will be provided at the right time, rather than only once people reach crisis.

Who is eligible? DisabilityCare Australia will help people who have a significant and permanent disability and who need assistance with everyday activities. This includes people whose disabilities are attributed to intellectual, cognitive, neurological, sensory, or physical impairment, or a psychiatric condition.

Will I lose my current support? No. Your current arrangements will stay in place until you have met DisabilityCare Australia to discuss your needs.

Will it affect my Disability Support Pension? No. Your Disability Support Pension will not be affected.

When does it all begin? DisabilityCare Australia is being rolled out in stages because it is a big change to the current system. Locations that start from July 2013 Barwon region of Victoria ............... People aged 0-64 Hunter region of NSW....................... People aged 0-64 South Australia ................................ Children aged 0-14 Tasmania .............................. Young people aged 15-24 Locations that start from July 2014 ACT.......................................................... People aged 0-64 Barkly region of NT............................. People aged 0-64 From July 2016, DisabilityCare Australia will continue to extend to more locations and age groups around Australia, including Queensland.

Starke says she would never want someone who didn’t want to marry them to conduct the ceremony – whether a priest or civil celebrant.

Altona North celebrant Libby Williams believes a marriage should simply be between two people who love each other. “A marriage is a marriage is a marriage,” laughs Williams, who happens to be bisexual. She says 65 per cent of marriages are civil functions, not religious ones. “One of the things the government promotes about marriage is facilitating a stable society, you know, historically. I think if that’s the essence of a healthy, stable society and [helps] families to grow and so forth, well, I just think, why

not? You don’t need to be married, obviously, to live together or have a family, but it’s an opportunity for people, before their family and friends, to declare their love to each other. “I think, often, gay couples have had a lot of challenges in their lives so they’re even more determined to be together – you know, it might have been harder for them to find the one.” Rona Goold, head of Australia’s Civil Celebrations Network says: “Let’s give couples the freedom of their preferred style of ceremony and not believe the myth that legal marriage is religious. Even Oliver Cromwell forbade marriage in churches for that reason. We don’t need to be so ungenerous of spirit. Fair is fair.”

Yarraville’s Lisa Stingel met her girlfriend Will Starke as a nurse in Daylesford Hospital when a mutual friend came in as a patient. When Starke came out “many years ago”, society was still arguing about whether a lesbian or gay person could see their partner in hospital. Stingel eventually asked Starke out to dinner and the rest is history. “When people talk about marriage equality and anything like that, I forget they’re talking about us because our lives are just so normal,” says Stingel. “I don’t see myself as different to anybody else; the only difference for me is that at the end of the night I go to bed with a woman and not a man.” The two haven’t talked about whether they will get married, but they want the option. Stingel has two daughters from a previous partnership but never married. “Not until we got together and I fell in love and not until I felt this is something I’m actually feeling quite passionate about [did I think about marriage] for the first time,” Stingel says. “I want the right to be able to ask Will to marry me and spend the rest of her life with me.” They don’t want the option of a civil union, or what Starke likens Peter Ellis (front) and Wayne Elliott to a “skim milk marriage”.

Keilor East Airport West Uniting Church’s Reverend Samasoni Nafatali is ready to conduct weddings for people of any sexual orientation or gender identity – as soon as the hierarchy and government say ‘yes’. The Samoan minister is not preaching to the converted among his flock and reiterates that he can’t speak for the church or congregation

but only himself. “It’s an unfortunate situation because the church has come a long way. Through these past 2000 years there have been issues the church has been trying to deal with. And the message the church is trying to convey is to help people liberate, help people feel free to live life to the full, and that’s a message Jesus was trying to convey: that people may have life, receive life and live it to the full.” Nafatali says it wasn’t long ago that blacks, women and children weren’t recognised as having equal rights. “If we come back to the women’s issue, women have been liberated from the Western point of view. They have the right to live life to the full. I think helping people liberate and be free is part of the gospel.”

ustralia’s meant to be the lucky country, the country of the fair go, says Melton’s Peter Ellis. But somewhere along the line we dropped the ball. Ellis’s half-Aboriginal family, and friends – both straight and gay – are longing for him and his partner Wayne Elliott to marry. Ellis, whose mother is Aboriginal and who works in Aboriginal health, had an AnglicanWesleyan upbringing. “I certainly have a lot of love for God and a lot of love for my faith and it’s something that I feel I need to express as a Christian – that something I would want to do is marry my partner. “I was brought up with a Labor Party background. My grandmother was a mayoress of Broadmeadows and my family is very Labor-oriented. We don’t want gay marriage to be the political football it is now because it’s not a Labor or a Liberal or a Greens issue; it’s a social issue that everybody can own. “I’ve got a wonderful heterosexual family and friends who are married and have kids and they are waiting for us to have that big day ... they want to be a part of it.” Ellis says he wouldn’t jump on a plane to a country like Canada or Argentina where samesex marriage is legal. “I don’t live there, I live here,” he says. “I’m a proud Aboriginal person and I want to celebrate my relationship with my loved ones in my own country, not someone else’s country. “When you think back to the social justice movement for black fellas back in the ’60s and ’70s, then, absolutely, gay people are still experiencing that level of discrimination. “A lot of the argument against gay marriage is about their religious ideal of what marriage is about ... but I know many people who are not necessarily religious people who still get married. Athiests can get married.” Ellis says a civil union is like “half a marriage, kind of a marriage”, that doesn’t afford equality when it came to decisions about things like medical power of attorney, wills and probate and adoptions laws. Elliott, whose three children from a previous marriage are also waiting for him to marry, said equality would send the right message to young people who had not come out.

Anxiety can be kept in check with support networks and counselling, writes Rebecca Miller

A

nxiety symptoms are often invisible, but for sufferers such as Glen Robinson the struggle is very real. ‘‘I was diagnosed with anxiety in 1995, when I was 17,’’ he says. ‘‘I left school to work full-time, broke up with my girlfriend and never really accepted I had a problem. ‘‘My diagnosis was brought about because I’d have panic attacks, obsessive thoughts and night sweats. I was constantly on edge.’’ Eventually, things began to turn around. Robinson went back to school, completed his VCE and visited a psychologist regularly. But life took a turn for the worse in 2003 when his anxiety came back with a vengeance. ‘‘I became very sensitive to light, couldn’t handle crowds and was anxious and insecure outside my home.’’ He says the support of his parents got him through. ‘‘One day mum gave me a pair of sunglasses and said, ‘wear these’. ‘‘I wore them everywhere. It worked. I felt

confident wearing them. All of a sudden the fuzziness and haze had disappeared.’’ Bacchus Marsh psychologist Danette Thackwray says people with anxiety don’t have to suffer in silence. ‘‘Psychological counselling is very helpful in the treatment of anxiety and panic attacks. ‘‘Patients can talk about their background and history of their symptoms and learn how and when the feelings began. They can gain the tools to help in their own recovery.’’ Robinson describes mental illness as being like a volcano – it can lie dormant for a while, but when it erupts you know about it. He says it is how you deal with it, and the help provided that’s most important. ‘‘Sufferers should accept they have a problem, get the right professional advice and no matter how bad things are, never give up.’’

DON’T PANIC ABOUT A TAX AUDIT

T

ax time can be stressful for some individuals and businesses, particularly if they receive an audit from the Australian Tax Office (ATO). But Melbourne tax consultant Ali Suleyman says there’s no need to be alarmed as the ATO send thousands of inquiries out to question any financial affairs that they believe are outside the norm, not necessarily because someone has done something wrong. “It’s important individuals and businesses don’t panic if they receive an audit,” Mr Suleyman says. “People need to understand the facts applying to the inquiry and know how the law applies to those facts to deal effectively with the ATO. Get experienced assistance, such as an accountant, to challenge any actions when needed - and obviously don’t state anything falsely.”

By Rebecca Miller

“The plastering industry is being focused on due to historical weaknesses and referrals from the public, and cafes because of their cash transactions.” In 2012 one in three individual refund claims that were reviewed were adjusted.

Each year the ATO focuses on specific businesses and this year it’s the cafe and plastering industries. “Individuals may slip up by giving the ATO incorrect or fraudulent income information or omit income, while micro enterprises [businesses that make under $2million a year] can be followed

up by the tax office for unrecorded cash transactions and GST evasion.” If a person or business is audited, Mr Suleyman says they need to be on top of their response to the ATO. “Audits might start out innocuously as a phone call or letter to the person/people involved and the ATO might come back with further questions, depending on the responses received. If the issue has not been resolved via this process a meeting may take place between the person/company involved, their accountant and an ATO representative, often in the accountant’s office. If the issue(s) remains unresolved the matter can ultimately be resolved in court.” Mr Suleyman says it’s only in rare cases that a raid occurs.

MOTORING Subaru Outback diesel What is it? A great way to go bush. What’s in it? A 110-kilowatt, four-cylinder turbo diesel with a continuously variable auto. Is it thirsty? I used 9.5 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 6.6 in the country. The official combined figure is 6.5.

SUPPLIED

On a good thing Rod Easdown goes bush in an Outback

I

had an unusual experience a few days ago: I filled up a Subaru at a diesel pump. Subaru has been making cars for 60 years, most of them with all-wheel-drive, yet it has not had a diesel motor until now. This first attempt displays attention to detail typical of the brand. It’s a ripper. This is major news for anyone who has ever fantasised wistfully about the big trip – you know, the daydream about telling the boss to shove it, throwing the bare necessities in the car and heading off on an odyssey around this wide, brown land with only the vaguest of schedules in mind. For anyone contemplating such an epic, this car is a sensible proposition. I may have only

had it for a week but I racked some serious kilometres out where the crows fly backwards and fuel prices are measured in arms and legs. The Outback is a wagon with raised suspension and a bit of extra underbody protection. It’s all-wheel-drive but it doesn’t have a low-range gearbox like the serious contenders. So it’s more an all-road vehicle than an off-road vehicle. This will suit most big trippers. You can drive clear around the country without leaving the bitumen these days, but if you want to see the Bungle Bungles or Wolf Creek, or explore the tracks in Kakadu or drive along the beach on Fraser Island, the Subaru has surprising ability. And for the other 99 per cent of the

time, it’s comfy, reasonably quiet and, bestof all, extremely economical. That’s because it’s more a car than a four-wheel-drive. It’s humane, easy and relaxed. OK, the suspension is a little tighter than normal, making the ride a bit firmer than a typical car, but it rides quite nicely. It handles like a car too, without a top-heavy feeling. The steering doesn’t get vague when you push through tight corners and the boot’s loading height is lower than an SUV despite the fullsize spare. The diesel motor is on par with anything from Europe. It’s nicely flexible and winds up quickly for highway overtaking, the continuously variable transmission making

excellent use of the motor’s power and torque. You’ll hear that distinctive clatter of a diesel outside, but in the cabin it’s quiet. There’s a reasonable audio system, good equipment levels and generous interior space. What a good thing this is.

Things you didn’t know about motoring What’s the biggest English-owned car company right now? It’s Morgan, building about 16 cars a week.

‘Pride and bragging rights were on the line for the Victorian teams’

Michael Copp

Persistence paid for Vic Metro as it broke through a dogged Vic Country defensive set-up to win its final AFL under-18 national championships match by 19 points at Etihad Stadium last Wednesday. On Sunday, the Western Jets continued their march towards TAC Cup finals with a thrilling two-point win against Gippsland Power. Metro and Country were playing for pride after South Australia had earlier sealed the division 1 title with its 10-point win against Western Australia at the same venue. Pride and bragging rights were on the line for the Victorian teams as Metro won 9.7 (61) to 6.6 (42). The Wednesday results meant South Australia’s three-point win against Vic Metro in Geelong the previous Friday was the decisive game on the way to the state’s first division 1 title. Metro’s Jack Billings (Oakleigh Chargers) was the dominant player in the first half as he kicked three of Metro’s five goals to the long break. Country dominated most of the third term, trapping Metro in its defensive 50 metres. But Country would never hit the front, with two

goals late in the quarter proving the decisive break for Metro. Vermont’s Mitchell Honeychurch kicked the first from a stoppage, then a poor kick across half-back by Vic Country was picked off and passed to Western Jet James Sicily, who converted from the set shot. Sicily and Jake Greiser (Keilor/ Western Jets) were the only two Jets to get a run for Vic Metro. TAC Cup action continued on Sunday with the Western Jets beating Gippsland Power in a thriller by two points at Preston City Oval. Melton’s Mitch Norton kicked three goals as the Jets won 11.11 (77) to 10.15 (75) to further strengthen the team’s top eight standing. Melton’s Mark Orr and Darley’s Billy Myers were also named in the Jets’ best. Western (fifth, 6-1-5) is now six points clear in the eight heading into this Saturday’s match against Calder Cannons (ninth, 5-7). The Cannons-Jets clash starts at 11.30am on Saturday at Highgate Reserve in Craigieburn. Torn down: Vic Country’s Matt Crouch turns the ball over in a tackle from Vic Metro’s Jay Kennedy-Harris.

Romsey gives Diggers a scare By Daniel Paproth The game hung in the balance early in the final quarter, but Diggers Rest came away with a crucial 20-point win over injury-riddled Romsey in the Riddell District Football League on Saturday. The win ensured Diggers Rest (11-1) held onto its spot in the top two, with the top four to be hotly contested with finals on the horizon. Romsey (9-2) slipped to fourth. The first 10 minutes of the final term were intense. Romsey, having trailed all day, hit the front with two behinds, but despite a majority of possession it couldn’t kick a major. Diggers Rest’s Tom Gleeson got the first goal to give the Burras back the lead, but the Redbacks levelled the scores minutes later. The man to break the deadlock

was Brent Tuckey. He was Diggers Rest’s main target, finishing with six goals and received a free kick inside 50 midway through the term to give the Burras the lead again. Two more goals put the result beyond doubt. The Redbacks lost Chris Petroro in the dying minutes. He was stretchered off with a knee injury, though the club is confident it won’t require a reconstruction. Jackson Mills and Steve Burlak suffered hamstring injuries and won’t play this weekend. Blake Henderson (groin) will also miss. Diggers Rest coach Jamie Elliot said his side was “10 to 15 per cent off” and “we nearly paid the price”. “It’s always good to have a win against Romsey, but I was pretty disappointed with a few areas. They didn’t follow instructions well at all.

‘It’s always good to win ... but I was disappointed with a few areas’ “When I put it on the players at three-quarter time I just think they responded, which was good.” At the weekend, Romsey had 29 players injured. Coach Mark Pedersen said he was proud of the effort given the crowded injury room. “They had a never-say-die attitude and kept putting their head over the ball, which was pretty gratifying. “We were in an opportunity to win and we didn’t, so that was disappointing. But it was a good effort against the odds.” Around the grounds, Barry Hall’s absence didn’t hinder Broadford as the Roos rolled Melton Centrals by

inbrief RDNL netball Melton Centrals continued on their winning ways in A-grade with a 67-22 victory against Broadford giving the Blues a 12th straight win. But Diggers Rest is slipping from the finals frame after a 66-36 loss to Romsey. Amelia Ralph was the Burras’ best as Diggers Rest (3-1-7) fell 10 points off the pace of sixth-placed Rupertswood (6-5). In other matches, Rockbank was on the wrong end of a 71-19 hiding against Macedon, Rupertswood beat Woodend Hesket 57-33, Wallan edged Lancefield 45-44, and Riddell beat Sunbury Kangaroos 56-34.

18 points in a result that leaves the top-six race wide open. Centrals (6-6) is fifth by a game from Rupertwood (5-6), while Macedon and Lancefield are out of the top six on percentage. Rockbank and Broadford are a game further back (4-7). Rockbank moved a game closer to sixth spot and a finals berth with an 11-point win against Macedon. Anthony Long was the Rams’ best with three goals, while Jake Armistead, Harley Cameron and Matthew Krul were other stand-outs in the 9.8 (62) to 8.3 (51) win. Elsewhere, Lancefield beat Wallan by 42 points and Rupertswood downed Woodend Hesket by 57. In Sunday’s blockbuster, a 10-goal second quarter put Riddell on course for a 29-point win against Sunbury Kangaroos.

Soccer Melton bounced back from its first loss of the FFV state league 5 west season, thrashing Sunshine Heights Western Tigers 16-1 on Saturday. Chris Briggs and Jason Moody scored six goals each, while Carlos Velasquez, Neil Keltie, Robert Bebenek and Jason Cossai all found the net. The win has pumped Melton’s goal difference up to plus-38, with Phoenix top on 31 points from Laverton Park (26) and Point Cook (24). Melton plays Spring Hills (11th, 14 points) at MacPherson Park from 7pm on Saturday.

BACCHUS MARSH pulled off the unlikeliest of victories against Lake Wendouree on Saturday, coming from seven goals down late in the third term to snatch a five-point win at Wendouree Reserve. The Marsh momentum was irresistible in the final quarter as seven unanswered goals set up the 11.12 (78) to 10.13 (73) win in Ballarat Football League Trailing by one point with only seconds remaining, the Cobras’ Leigh Wilson lived out every boy’s dream by kicking a match-winning snap from 35 metres out. The siren sounded as the ball sailed through post-high, resulting in grand final-like celebrations. Just metres away, the Lakers were stunned into silence, with many players lying flat on the ground, hands over heads, wishing it was all a bad dream. “It’s an amazing feeling. As soon as I kicked it I knew it was a goal,” a euphoric Wilson said in the rooms afterwards. Bacchus Marsh’s finals hopes remain alive thanks to the win, with Ballarat (5-5) holding sixth from Melton South (4-6) then Lake Wendouree and the Cobras (3-7). Cobra forwards Daniel Velden and Trevor Hilton instigated the revival with several strong marks inside 50, while Mike Suban and Tyson Shea were busy around the packs. “We got out of jail, simple as that. They lost the match, but our

boys showed a lot of heart to fight back,” Bacchus Marsh coach Doug Hawkins said. “It was a sensational finish and I’m very proud of the boys. It keeps our hopes of finishing sixth alive.” Lake Wendouree led for the entire match bar the first five minutes and final second. Skipper Tim Malone was seemingly everywhere and Matt Tuminello

continued his stellar season with a dominant display in the ruck, while Lane Buckwell impressed with four majors as a floating forward. Coach Gavin Webb, who missed again because of concussion, struggled to find words after the match and although unwilling to admit it himself, his on-field presence would have likely been the steadying hand needed.

“We should have won today. It’s a loss that really hurts,” Webb said. “We stopped doing what had got us in front and then when they had the momentum, we didn’t know how to stop it. “It’s a really tough lesson and the boys have to hurt and use that emotion to make us a better team for the rest of the season and beyond.” — Ballarat Courier

Gordon’s up-and-down form continued for the better on Saturday with a 21-point win against Daylesford. The 17.16 (118) to 14.13 (97) victory lifted the Hawks to eighth with six wins and five losses. Ballan lost 8.5 (53) to 7.5 (47) against Beaufort to slip to 13th on the 18team ladder.

Football Victoria suffered a shock thrashing at the hands of South Australia in the opening match of the national under-16 championships, beaten by 128 points. South Australia showed no mercy at Blacktown International Sportspark in Sydney with its 22.16 (148) to 3.2 (20) victory. Victoria plays its second match of the championships against Vic Country at Skoda Stadium.

Netball title hopes shoot clear of pack

East Point triumphs in duel of the playing coaches Spearhead playing coaches Matt Sutton and Dan Jordan went headto-head in a Ballarat Football League shoot-out that fell East Point’s way at Melton South’s expense on Saturday. The key forwards kicked eight goals each as East Point won 19.11 (125) to 17.9 (111) at Melton Recreation Reserve. The loss was another blow to South’s top six chances, with the Panthers (4-6) left sitting at seventh, a game behind Ballarat (5-5). After going goal for goal through the first half, the class of East Point began to show with players such as Jason Delaney, Toby Boyle and Brad Whittaker leading the way. With scores level at quarter-time, the Roos were able to kick six goals to the Panthers’ four in the second quarter to break out to a nine-point lead by half-time. The third term was similar to the second, East Point kicking six goals to Melton South’s four as the East Point midfield, led by Delaney, Boyle and Chris Banwell, started to get on top. With a strong performance by Jordan and Tom Cashin, the visitors were able to open up a 23-point advantage at the final change. Shaun White continued to battle hard for the Panthers throughout the day, an effort that was praised by his coach. East Point had to defend well in order to withstand a strong finish by the Panthers. Coach Sutton put Melton South’s loss down to a third-quarter lapse. “We had to start chasing the deficit back, which was always going to be tough,” he said. “We knew it would be a hardfought contest and it was just a matter of who worked harder.” — Michael Hankin, Ballarat Courier SHAWN SMITS

Ballarat Netball League title contenders continue to pull away from the rest of the pack, with a decreasing likelihood that the top four will drop a game to the other seven teams in A-grade. Melton put on a stellar defensive display on Sunday to strangle Ballarat and win by 50 goals. Ballarat was still in single figures at three-quarter time and shot just 11 goals for the game as the dominant Bloods scored 61. Melissa McCauley was an unstoppable force under the ring for Melton, shooting 56 of 67, while Amy Conroy and Brooke Thompson kept the mid-court ticking over. Melton is third after the win (8-2) and behind top pair North Ballarat City (40) and East Point (40). Sunbury (34) is fourth after having the bye. East Point was challenged in the first quarter by Melton South on Saturday but broke away with a 13-4 second quarter to set up a 50-33 victory. Andrea Tai (21 goals), Jenna Nicolle and Bonne Hobson were Melton South’s best in the defeat. Top team North Ballarat City welcomed back its Victorian Netball League players to field a full strength outfit, beating Redan 56-47. The battle for sixth spot took a turn for the worse for Bacchus Marsh, which lost 62-25 to Lake Wendouree. The Lakers (5-5) hold sixth place ahead of the Cobras (4-6). Jennifer Lawford was Bacchus Marsh’s best. Sunbury Lions and Darley both had the bye and will return to court against each other at Darley Park this weekend.

Melton backs off and misses by a point By Luke Griffiths MELTON was left pondering ‘what might have been’ after it outplayed Ballarat for three quarters only to fall a point short at MacPherson Park on Sunday. A rushed behind in the dying minutes was ultimately the difference between the two sides as Ballarat won 12.8 (80) to 10.19 (79).

Melton remains 10th on the Ballarat Football League ladder (1-9), ahead of winless Sebastopol (0-10) but missed the chance to boost its own chances of avoiding the wooden spoon and doing a favour for teams chasing the sixth-placed Swans. Ballarat’s kicking of nine goals to Melton’s two in the third quarter, swinging it from 22 points down to 24 up, proved the difference.

Melton coach Bob Heaney was perplexed by his players’ lapse in concentration after half-time. “I really don’t know what happened,” he said. “We spoke about playing four quarters during the week and even during the game. “It’s frustrating because they are the games we have to win and we have to find ways to do that. “Our supporters were happy

with the performance, but we can’t be. And we can’t carry passengers, because we had a few today.” In a first half in which both teams struggled to consistently hit targets in the blustery conditions, Melton, buoyed by its first win the previous week, looked likely to cause an upset. Darren Haby continued with his good form by providing a focal point up forward. He finished with three

goals but would have had more had he had kicked straight. The Swans were led by Braden Deary, who finished with five goals, including three in the third term, and Daniel Kennedy, whose pace across half-back and the wing was critical. Ryan Davis, John Prudek and Daniel Walker were also among the better Melton players. — Ballarat Courier
