The council report noted it would cost almost $120,000 to make Koolyangarra useable again.

But Cr Gill said it was the cheaper option long-term because there would be ongoing pricey maintenance costs for the older building.

Koolyangarra has been valued at $850,000 — down from $1.3 million just a year ago — but money from that site wouldn’t necessarily go towards the council’s contribution to the new preschool.

Any sales of council land must be allocated to the asset renewal fund until it reaches $2 million— then the money can be used for other projects.

A decision on the state government funding is expected by the end of the year.

A PRESCHOOL at Bayswater Primary School is a step closer after Knox Council committed $330,000 to the project last week.

The school is seeking to modify its early learning centre — built as part of the Building the Education Revolution — where the preschool would be located.

The council and school are working together to try secure $600,000 in state government funding.

The council had already allocated $100,000 towards the $1 million-plus project in its 2012-13 budget but had to commit the additional amount to be eligible for the funding.

Principal Ian Michelson said the introduction of compulsory 15 hours of preschool for four year olds from next year meant more centres were needed, particularly in Bayswater.

Bluehills is the only preschool in the suburb.

Koolyangarra, which is on the north side of Mountain Highway, stopped operating as a preschool several years ago because of a lack of enrolments.

Mr Michelson said he was confident enrolments would pick up at the proposed new site.

He said there had already been 13 official expressions of interest from school families for 2014 enrolments.

Bayswater parent Anne Bell believes the preschool is vital for the area.

Mrs Bell said having the preschool in the ELC meant children would be more comfortable moving onto primary school and

Advocating for youth

BY TARA McGRATH THE first meeting of the outer east headspace consortium last week saw new chairman, Knox councillor Sue McMillan, take her seat for the first time.

Cr McMillan was nominated for the role after her decision not to stand again as councillor in Dobson Ward in next monthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s council elections.

She said the councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s youth services coordinator, Tony Justice, had nominated her for the role because of her involvement with the youth advisory committee for the past four years. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s good because I can stay involved with what I am passionate about, while not necessarily being on council.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;&#x2122; Cr McMillan said her passion for helping young people and her business expertise were what got her the job. Her background is in marketing and finance, and she also holds a diploma from the Australian Institute of Company Directors which allows her to be a chairman for any of the Top 200 companies on the ASX. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be making a lot of governance and strategic decisions. My expertise will be in finance, managing risk, things like that,â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;&#x2122; she said. She

would be the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;frontmanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;&#x2122; for the new headspace site â&#x20AC;&#x201D; â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;just like the mayor in councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;&#x2122; â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and do all the publicity and attend meetings.

Cr McMillan said the consortiumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first meeting covered a multitude of issues, including how to make the Knox site accessible to young people in Maroondah and Yarra Ranges as well. A report will be presented at the next meeting highlighting some of the ways to raise awareness of the centre.

Cr McMillan said it was a priority to ensure that Maroondah and Yarra Ranges councils were â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;engaged and listened toâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;&#x2122; just as much as Knox.

The centre is expected to open by the end of the year. The old Centrelink site at Knox City is now being fitted out to make way for the youth mental hub, and Eastern Melbourne Medicare Local â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the lead consortium agency â&#x20AC;&#x201D; is interviewing for a site manager.

Smoke alarm saves family A family of five had a lucky escape on Monday morning when fire destroyed their Rowville home. The CFA was called to an address in Westminster Drive shortly after 3.30am and found the house engulfed in flames. The family were alerted by a smoke alarm and escaped unharmed. The cause of the blaze has yet to be determined but it is believed to have started in a bedroom, and is not being treated as suspicious.

Youth funding fear

BY DAVID SCHOUT VITAL funding for vulnerable students in the eastern suburbs could be slashed when the state government reviews its current spending.

Schools in Melbourne’s eastern metropolitan region (EMR) — including Knox, Maroondah and Yarra Ranges — are now able to provide on average $119 per student to support at-risk 10-18 year olds as part of the School Focused Youth Services program.

This is now subject to review by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.

Although the government has so far shown no indication of cutting the service, a joint statement by local providers of SFYS does not show any optimism that funding will continue beyond June 2013. ‘‘With little information known about this review there is concern that the SFYS program is in danger of losing funding without all stakeholders having the opportunity to demonstrate the program’s value,’’ EMR representatives said in a statement.

The SFYS program began in 1997 and has provided prevention and early intervention support for students with personal or family troub-

les. The EMR says funding for these programs has not always been straightforward. ‘‘Since program inception in 1997, funding rounds appear to have been approached in an ad hoc last-minute manner that has created a highstress environment where the retention of quality staff has been difficult.’’

The EMR also argues that these programs, including mentoring and relationship counselling, have been independently assessed to be low cost and cost-effective.

It has also stated these programs would cease to exist should state funding end.

The state government has remained tightlipped over any potential budget cuts. ‘‘The Victorian government is committed to providing the very best and most effective support to any student experiencing welfare issues or who is at risk of disengaging from school,’’ a spokesman for the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development said. ‘‘External programs designed to provide extra support to students experiencing welfare issues are being considered.’’

At present the government sets aside $7 million annually for SFYS programs, of which the Eastern Metropolitan Region gets $1.08 million.

All in a life’s work at the funeral business AT the age when most young girls were playing with dolls or climbing a tree, Ellese Templeton was visiting cemeteries and reading headstones.

Despite never attending a funeral as a child, or even knowing anyone who had died, Ms Templeton developed a fascination with death and the funeral industry from about six years old.

It’s a passion she has never been able to explain, but the 28 year old from Ferntree Gully now has her own funeral business — Templeton Family Funerals — and has been nominated for a Telstra Young Business Women’s Award.

She’ll find out tomorrow whether she’s taken out the gong, but she said even being nominated was an honour — ‘‘getting to do what I love is my prize’’.

When she finished school, Ms Templeton got a job at the Royal Hotel in Ferntree Gully and it was there she saw a ‘transfer job’ advert-

ised. ‘‘It turned out to be a coroner’s pick-up job. So I picked up the bodies of people involved in murders, suicides and car accidents and took them back to the funeral home.’’

That was the start she needed, and after several years she decided to branch out and established her own company. ‘‘My mentor said I had such a passion and drive for it, and that I was good at it, so I went for it.’’

At 23, Ms Templeton didn’t have a car, phone or computer — but she did have the support of her family. ‘‘My mum and grandma said they believed in me so mum gave me $6000 for a small car and my grandma gave me some money for a computer,’’ she said.

Since then, the business has ‘‘grown and grown and grown’’. She bought her first premises in Dandenong at the end of last year and her own hearse before that.

Ms Templeton believes she is one of the youngest — if not the youngest — funeral owner/directors in Australia

and aims to keep her business ‘‘boutique’’.

After each funeral, she makes a donation to a charity that the deceased person was passionate about. Some of the recipients have included the RSPCA, Lost Dogs Home and tennis clubs and fire brigades She also spends plenty of time with the family to ensure the funerals aren’t a traditional ‘‘old-fashioned’’ affair and have plenty of personal touches. ‘‘We were talking with a young girl who had cancer and she said she loves bright colours and heels. So at her funeral, everyone will wear brightcoloured heels.’’

Ms Templeton said she often bumped into primary school teachers who were never surprised to hear about where she ended up. ‘‘I’ve just always intrigued by the death industry.’’

The winner of the Victorian award will be announced tomorrow.

Concern on zoning

BY TARA McGRATH KNOX Council has expressed concern over the proposed planning zone reforms put out by the state government, especially changes to commercial and rural zoning.

The sweeping reforms by Planning Minister Matthew Guy’s office are some of the biggest changes to Melbourne’s planning schemes in decades.

The council is particularly concerned by proposed changes to rural zones. A council report submitted to Mr Guy states Knox’s rural land is very different to that across the rest of the state and needs ‘‘careful consideration’’.

Among the differences noted are Knox’s close proximity to Melbourne, smaller land lots and most rural land being within the urban growth boundary.

The report, prepared by the council’s strategic planning department, stated proposed changes to commercial zones could ‘‘undermine council polices’’.

It specifically referred to the proposed commercial two zone, where a supermarket no bigger than 2000 square metres could be built without a permit. ‘‘Council won’t be able to assess the

appropriateness of the use,’’ the report stated.

Councillors expressed particular concern over the proposal at a meeting last week when it was decided to send a letter to business owners in Knox highlighting the issue. ‘‘It could undermine existing retail precincts if big supermarkets pop up everywhere,’’ mayor Adam Gill said.

Commercial two zones could potentially allow accommodation to be built — such as retirement homes, boarding/rooming houses and hostels — without attention to the necessary infrastructure and amenities such as public transport. ‘‘Many of the investment-based changes proposed under the reforms will generate short-term economic gain at the expense of a designated activity centre’s long-term viability,’’ the report stated.

It also lashed out at the ‘‘hurried’’ consultation process and this Friday’s deadline for feedback.

The deadline is just days before the council goes into caretaker period before next month’s municipal election, which means there is no time to consult the issue with the new council.

However, the report also stated the council was pleased by the changes to residential zones because they would ‘‘provide clarity around development’’.

Tatting in memory U3A teacher Wendy Boyle last week helped students at the Knox U3A centre contribute to a special exhibition in the USA. The class is tatting butterflies for an exhibition of 1.5 million of the insects at the Holocaust Museum in Houston, Texas, each butterfly representing a child who died during the Holocaust. Mrs Boyle said her group had tatted about 15 butterflies for the museum. Tatting is a craft technique used to make lace through a series of knots and loops. MPs face ire over ‘backpack beds’

A good laugh is healthy, and that’s no joke

BY KLAUDIA MIZIOLEK THE statistics are alarming — while children laugh 400 times a day, in some cases adults laugh as little as only four times.

It’s a figure Knox’s Lynette Mitchell is preparing to tackle head-on in her role as ‘laughter coach’ at the Day of Joy and Optimism in Ferntree Gully next week.

The event organiser, Mrs Mitchell said the day was for people looking to enhance their lives as well as their relationships with others.

Mrs Mitchell is also the leader of the Ferntree Gully Laughter Club, which specialises in relieving tension and lifting people’s spirits.

The association formed in 2005 and was originally based in Boronia before moving to its new home behind Ferntree Gully library. The club has between six and eight regular participants but Mrs Mitchell would love to see more people coming for a laugh. ‘‘I’ve noticed that people come for a while and then they sort of drop off. It’d be nice to have at least a dozen

A GROUP of angry homelessness activists protested outside Scoresby MP and Treasurer Kim Wells’ office on Monday afternoon.

They vented their anger over the failure of Mr Wells and Housing Minister Wendy Lovell to commit to providing a ‘backpack bed’ for up to 2800 homeless people. A backpack bed is a lightweight, emergency relief, fire-retardant outdoor bed for homeless people without shelter.

Swags for Homeless founder Tony Clarke, who developed the backpack, led the protest and said he wanted the two MPs to be accountable for what they had promised. ‘‘Before treasurer Wells and minister Lovell won the election they wrote letters of glowing support. Now in government they ignore the evidence of over 200 charity experts who support our program.’’

It would cost the government $238,000 to implement the program. ‘‘It’s common knowledge that homeless people [can] die of hypothermia. When faced with spending a night on the streets, people deserve the respect and dignity of suitable outdoor bedding, and a blanket is not going to cut it.’’

Radio offers field day for sporty volunteers

BY TARA McGRATH AN online radio station â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the first of its kind in Melbourne â&#x20AC;&#x201D; is on the lookout for volunteers who are passionate about womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sport.

Boroniaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Will Taylor started Smash FM in 2010 and since then has been covering a variety of sports through weekend commentary and a weekday chat show. The station can only be heard through the Smash FM Facebook site and the page has almost 1500 likes.

Taylor, 22, launched the station because he believed womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sport needed to be promoted more.

And while he knows some of his colleagues at the EFL might not agree, he said womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s football at state level was better than menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x201D; â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;we just need to give it a fair goâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

After almost two years of working solo, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s now recruiting volunteers who want to learn about radio and are equally passionate about sport.

Taylor said he â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;pretty much does everythingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;&#x2122; for the station from commentating at games,

talking about sport on the three weekday programs, sourcing information and monitoring social media.

The station covers a range of sports including basketball, football, soccer, hockey and ice hockey, and he broadcasts the weekday show straight from his Boronia home, using social media to interact with listeners. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had a lot of good feedback about the station from clubs and players,â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;&#x2122; he said.

Some of the coaches even told Taylor they had some new recruits because of his show.

Throughout the year, he has club representatives in his studio to talk about their sport.

History grants available Ferntree Gully MP Nick Wakeling is urging community groups to apply for a share of funding for local history grants. Far from their homeland, a new landscape

AS far as father-and-son combinations go, Croydon South’s Pahay Htoo and Lay Htoo could stake a claim to being one of the best.

After fleeing war-torn Burma and settling in a Thai refugee camp, the pair — along with their family of nine — came to Australia in 2008.

Now Pahay and Lay’s remarkable journey has culminated in a fresh start and full-time work with Knoxfield-based landscape restoration company Recoland.

They have become an inspiration among the many migrants who have left Burma to start a new life in Melbourne’s outer eastern suburbs.

In 2010 Beth Dooley, a volunteer for multicultural language group AMES, told Recoland director and friend Michael Gitsham about the untapped gardening talent in these newly arrived migrants.

Mr Gitsham’s ears pricked up, and he employed Pahay and Lay as part of the company’s casual planting crew. ‘‘From day one they showed incredible initiative,’’ he says. ‘‘They really wanted to show us they were hard workers, make a difference and give back for showing faith in them.

‘‘That’s just how their culture is — they don’t like to take anything. ‘‘We would tell them to have a lunch break and they would be back working within five minutes.’’

Pahay, 20, and Lay, 45, were then given fulltime jobs — something seen as a crowning achievement for newly arrived migrants.

The Htoos are Karen people, an ethnic group based mainly in Burma but also in Thailand.

While their English is fairly limited, Pahay can tell you the exact date his family arrived in Australia and that he enjoys the exercise as part of his job at Recoland.

Recoland’s business systems manager Adam Cole, who has co-ordinated their development within the company, says their hard work and polite attitude is a credit to them. ‘‘If we tell them to be at a job site at 6.30am, they’ll be there at 6am,’’ he says with a laugh. ‘‘Sometimes I tell them the job starts later so they can arrive on time. ‘‘We all really enjoy working with them, and it’s great to simply employ good people, no matter where they’re from.’’

An app a day, every day slingshot that has birds flying through the air smashing into pigs. A samurai sword that slices and dices fruit.

Simple ideas. Big money.

But among all the success stories of apps for smartphones that have gone on to become a global phenomenon there must be many that never really took off.

So is it worth taking a risk by dipping a toe into the world of app development — and how do you go about this?

Recent statistics show there are now more than 650,000 apps in the iPhone app store and more than 30 billion apps have been downloaded.

Google’s store for Android apps offers more than 500,000 apps and has been around for a shorter period than the Apple model.

Rowville resident Dexter Eugenio is in the process of developing his first app.

He came up with the concept and has outsourced the building of the app to a company based in India.

During the development process Mr Eugenio, 35, has been in touch with the developers every day, mainly via Skype conversations. ‘‘I feel like I have 100 per cent control,’’ he says.

His is an entertainment app that is a questionand-answer situation posing different challenges in life such as: ‘‘Would you rather earn a lot of money in a job you hate or make little money doing a job you love?’’ The questions and answers can then be shared via social media. ‘‘The app is still about a month away,’’ says Mr

These days it really seems there is an application — or app — on your phone for everything. You can watch a baby grow, use a timer to cook the perfect egg and get advice on local restaurants. But have we reached an app saturation point or are there still good ideas to be had? CLAIRE THWAITES investigates what Melbourne’s east is up to when it comes to app development.

Eugenio, who works in IT and has toyed with app ideas before. ‘‘But I wanted something that is very easy to share.’’

He said there will be both a free and paid version of the app — named Chooze — with the free app having banner ads incorporated. ‘‘I didn’t think I was just going to create this app and make millions straightaway. ‘‘But I did some research and found the marketing of the app is more important than the app itself. I want this app to get me noticed. ‘‘I can’t wait for it to be finished.’’

Clayton resident Lei Feng is an app developer who works for Armadale-based business B2Cloud.

He says the biggest goal for him when developing an app is to ensure it is user-friendly. ‘‘It’s all about maximising user experience. ‘‘You really want to hide that technical detail from users and make it engaging.’’

He says anyone thinking of creating an app needs to have a clear direction about how the app will work and that it will be simple to use.

Recent apps Mr Feng has worked on include

an Ambulance Victoria app that instructs people on CPR procedures and other first aid tips, a guide and tourism app for the Great Ocean Road and Thinking Of You, a social networking app that has been available for the past two weeks and helps people buy presents for special occasions such as birthdays and anniversaries.

The apps can take anywhere from one to three months to create.

He says offshore app creators like the ones Mr Eugenio is using do not pose a huge threat to local business as many people still prefer face-toface consultation. ‘‘If you go overseas then they are not going to be as efficient and accountability will drop.’’

Mr Feng, who studied at Monash University, believes the market has not been saturated yet — particularly among Australians, who are keen consumers of apps. ‘‘We still have a long way to go. It’s a huge market.’’

Deputy chief executive officer at Yarra Ranges Regional Marketing Lincoln Wilson has been in the app game for a while now.

His was the first regional tourism body to have

an app — a tourism app, launched in June 2010, that is a visitor’s guide to the Yarra Valley and Dandenongs.

Since then the free app has been downloaded more than 6000 times.

Mr Wilson says the biggest challenge YRRM faces with the app is waiting in queues at Apple for updates to go through.

He says there are ways around this when creating a new app by making it manually updateable — something he highly recommends. ‘‘They are not always that easy to be updated,’’ he says. ‘‘Your updates go into a queue at Apple and then you have to wait until it gets checked by an actual person on the other end. ‘‘It used to only be about nine or 10 days — now that there are so many apps it is months. ‘‘There was a period when the wait was four or five months. It can be quite painful.’’

He says as Apple gets a commission on the paid apps they tend to get priority over free apps.

Yarra Ranges has also joined with the Mornington Peninsula and Phillip Island in the app named Melb Touring, which was released just over a fortnight ago.

So whether it be finding love or finding a decent coffee — there are apps out there to make our lives easier, more organised and to keep us entertained.

And with reports of a nine year old in Singapore writing his own app — you are never to young to give app development a go — it could be your ticket to financial success.

From student to captain

BY TARA McGRATH he first year of university couldn’t have gone any better for Wantirna resident Courtney Fraser.

After stumbling across a performing arts stall during Monash University’s O-Week at the start of the year, she auditioned for the musical Return To The Forbidden Planet and scored the lead role of Captain Tempest — usually played by a male. ‘‘In this production we play on gender roles. It’s quite an ambiguous role and is a mix of male and female. We’re taking a different view to the typically misogynistic view of ’60s sci-fi movies.’’

The original Forbidden Planet came to cinemas in 1956 but the Bob Carlton musical version features many great rock’n’roll numbers from the 1950s and ’60s including Born to be Wild, Great Balls of Fire and Good Vibrations.

Fraser comes from a musical family and plays piano and violin, and is also a talented singer. ‘‘Music is an inherent part of my life. I took up singing in high school and it’s been a love affair ever since,’’ she said.

BY ROY WARD ROWVILLE Eagles’ title hopes will go down to the last game of the FFV provisional league 3 season.

The Eagles thrashed White Star Dandenong 6-2 at Park Ridge Reserve on Saturday and lead the league by just one point ahead of Old Brighton Grammarians entering the final round.

Whichever team finishes the season on top wins the competition.

In the clash with the bottom-placed White Star, Sebastian Goyenechea scored a brace and Paul Maghiar, Nemanja Salamandic, Onur Tufan and Adrian Gheorghiu also made the scoresheet.

The Eagles were set to seal the league earlier this month but lost coach Alex Halikias, one of the men credited with bringing greater professionalism to the club, after a dispute with club officials following a game against Baxter.

The Eagles will need to beat Old Trinity Grammarians at Old Trinity this Saturday to win the league, a draw or loss could allow Old Brighton to overtake them for the title.

Having covered almost 2000 kilometres to date, we have found the Honda Civic hybrid using fuel in the range of 5.6 to 6.2 litres per hundred kilometres in commuter driving in town.

This can be pulled down to the high fours on motorways. A mixture of city and country driving usually had the fuel meter sitting in the low to mid fives.

Owners of turbo-diesel cars will point out that they can achieve similarly low fuel figures.

However, diesels put out significantly more CO2 than petrol-hybrids. The Honda Civic hybrid is rated at 104 grams per kilometre in the Green Vehicle Guide, whereas diesel cars of this size typically push out 150 to 160 grams — a huge difference.

The Civic hybrid loses a little boot space to house its battery.

onda brought the first mass-produced hybrid to Australia early in 2001. The Honda Insight was something out of the ordinary, not only in its petrol-electric powertrain but also in its radical styling.

Hindsight says Insight didn’t make a lot of sense in our somewhat conservative market and sales were slow. Its $50,000 price tag didn’t help either. You could get into a mid-range Honda Civic for less than half of that.

Honda quickly learned its lesson so from 2004 began to import Civic hybrids rather than Insights. These have been moderately successful in the sales race over the years.

With the new-model Civic hybrid for 2012, Honda is making a strong sales and marketing push. It gave several motoring journalists the opportunity to live with a Civic hybrid for six months. We are halfway through that period and are thoroughly enjoying the experience.

Eagles storm home for emotional win FERNTREE Gully under-19s came from behind to win the Eastern Football League division 4 under-19s grand final on Sunday.

The Eagles fell behind by 21 points in the third quarter but in the final term stormed home to claim an emotional five-point victory over Park Orchards.

The premiership win followed the death of an Eagles playerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s father a few weeks ago, with the Eagles players banding together in the finals and going on to win an unlikely flag.

The Eagles entered the finals in third place on the ladder, 16 points behind top two sides Surrey Park and Park Orchards.

That rage, that drive to avoid disappointment, has sat close to the Bears’ hearts since that day.

It has been as close to their chests as their red and green jumpers, with the Bears completing an undefeated EFL division 4 season with a 53-point win against South Belgrave in the grand final at Walker Park, Nunawading on Sunday.

But the grand final was hardly a one-way street as the Saints and Bears exchanged leads early in the third term before the Bears took a 22-point lead at the final change.

In the opening seven minutes of the last term the Bears took hold of their long-awaited premiership with five goals in a furious stretch to take the lead to 46 points and give their supporters 15 minutes of jubilation before the siren confirmed the result.

Bears coach Michael Glassborow said the premiership was years in the making.

Killian celebrates dual premiership wins THE Basin veteran Matt Killian had waited 10 years to play in a second grand final.

On Sunday he was involved in two of them.

The 32-year old spent his season coaching the Bears reserves and playing in the seniors, so when his seconds won the Eastern Football League division 4 reserves premiership on Sunday, Killian was nowhere to be seen.

Not on the field celebrating, nor in the coaches box shaking hands and not even on the podium when his side lifted their premiership cup.

Instead, Killian was with the Bears seniors getting ready for their grand final clash with South Belgrave.

Luckily for Killian, the Bears seniors also won their grand final, allowing

him to celebrate at least one of his two premierships for the day.

“I never thought this would happen,” he said.

“It’s fantastic. I played in a grand final 10 years ago and never thought I’d get the chance to do it again.”

Killian coached the Bears reserves up until three-quarter-time before leaving the side in the hands of his assistant coach and joining the Bears seniors. But he didn’t spend all of that time warming up. ‘‘I missed the whole last quarter but I kept checking the scores,’’ he said.

After being around during plenty of tough seasons, Killian revelled in the post-game celebrations with his Bears teammates, from both premiership sides.

‘‘I have gone through seasons where we never won a game, now we have won the flag. This is unbelievable,’’ he said.

Two equally worthy foes set for grand final clash SCORESBY will be out to achieve one of the toughest tasks in football when it takes to Bayswater Oval in the Eastern Football League division 1 under-19s grand final on Saturday.

The Magpies will be out to win back-to-back premierships and will have to do so against Lilydale, a side with just as much finals experience following their division 2 premiership last season.

This is the first season of under-19s football following the EFL’s decision to change from an under-18s competition last year.

Magpies coach Sean Kavanagh said his side had a full list for the clash against the Falcons. ‘‘This grand final will probably be tougher than our premiership last year,’’ he said. ‘‘These two sides know each other so well and the boys are really excited about the match

and are looking forward to the weekend.’’

The Magpies hold a slim edge over the Falcons going into the grand final, having won two of their three matches this season.

But Kavanagh said all previous form and achievements would be thrown out the window when the game starts on Saturday. ‘‘Ladder position doesn’t mean anything in the long run,’’ he said. ‘‘Our speed is something we

work a lot on and winning the contested footy is also a strength of ours. But both sides have dangerous forwards so whoever can win the ball out of the middle will have an advantage.’’
