My favourite part of school … the extra-curricular activities are awesome. I also really love being a house leader, working with students from the different year levels. Greensborough College also offers excellent leadership opportunities across all year levels and it is fun to be involved.

My community involvement includes … netball coaching, netball umpiring, calisthenics coaching, and an annual “Politicians breast cancer tournament that I umpire and play in. can always

do more”

The least fun part of school is … the pressure of year 12. When I finish school I want to be … a primary school teacher. Apart from class work, at school I enjoy … organising various house events, spending time with all my friends, coaching sports teams and working with teachers and peers. I really enjoy being the Cooper senior house leader and (I enjoyed) our school trip when we went hiking in Nepal during the last school holidays.

My main responsibilities in these roles are … umpiring, playing, coaching, motivating and being a positive role model.

I enjoy community work because … you get something back, as much as you give, sometimes more. I like working with the younger kids, who I coach. When I’m not volunteering, in my spare time I … study, do calisthenics and play netball. Mostly I focus on school and spending time with my family and friends. Are Australians volunteering enough? They are but their involvement is not promoted or publicised enough.

My community hero: My mum. She was the one who got me involved in the volunteer work that I do. I have followed in her footsteps – she also does what I do. Are politicians doing enough for the underprivileged? Politicians can always do more.

If I was Prime Minister for a day I would … showcase programs for people to be involved in, highlight volunteer and charity opportunities, and take time to recognise real heroes. So many people are making a difference; these people need to be recognised. As well as providing good governance, of course. \ ccritchley@theweeklyreview.com.au

Should celebrities be linked to charities? Yes and no. Yes, because they are well known and can promote charities and their causes, but no as they don’t represent everyday people or the people who need the advocacy or charity to support them.

I would encourage young people to volunteer by … getting people involved. I started by shadowing a senior coach. This developed my skills and when I was ready I was able to work independently.

At school I now study … English, health and human development, psychology, further maths and business management.

My school’s community involvement includes … our trip to Nepal this year, where we handed over $3500 – after our fund-raising efforts – to a village school. I have also been involved in cross-age tutoring in LOTE with our local primary school during years 7 and 8, coaching sports teams of other year levels and we also have community involvement as an elective in year 10.

My first memory of school is … year 7 camp. It was my first camp. Second day of school and off we went to camp – it was a great way to make new friends and feel a part of our new school.
