I’ve just returned from a few days and beyond the west is, and the east most certainly is in Perth – the only part of Australia that’s making not. Australia is about to step into a very long, dark and unmapped tunnel, along with the rest of the world, as financial institutions and economies are exposed for having been built on shifting sands. Don’t tune out when you hear political and economic leaders tell you that Australia is better placed than any other to ride out the next wave of this storm; particularly as it seems we won’t be going below with the storm sail up – we’ll be actively engaged in getting through the tempest in even better shape. The investment, infrastructure building and vision of the 1850s, the 1950s and beyond that made Australia such a suddenly rich but young country has stood us in great stead: but only one part of the country now seems to recognise that it is this vision, not caution, that will get us to the next safe place. If you want to see how they’re doing it, go west. \

of mercifully light and pillowy pasta pieces drenched in a four-cheese sauce high on Gorgonzola. The garlic, oil and parsley-scented pasta in the spaghetti marinara is the most perfectly al dente stuff I’ve tasted in ages. It turns what could have been a workmanlike marinara into a plate to savour. Even more so if you add a couple of teaspoons of chopped chillis in oil; there’s a glass of the stuff supplied on each table. It puts the mojo into a marinara. The lasagna is another steadfast dish – though perhaps a bit meaty for some – as is the crumbed veal scallopine and pretty much all of the menu’s time-honoured Italian repertoire. Even tiramisu, that much-abused dessert, is redeemed in a riot of mascarpone sandwiching sheets of deeply caffeinated and groggy sponge, all of it dusted with bitter cocoa that helps balance the sugar-hit. It’s so good we score it out of 10 and decide it’s easily an eight. But it’s not my favourite way to end a meal at Lupino. That would be the scroppino, which is basically an excuse for two more drinks under the guise of dessert. Lupino don’t blend theirs, they serve it DIY; a scoop of lemon sorbet in a long glass with shots of vodka and prosecco on the side. Pour the booze over the sorbet, mix and drink it with a straw. It’s destined to become my favourite summer nightcap. I just hope they invest in a blender to save me doing all that hard work myself. \

BEN THOMAS GOES GREY

The same grape is known as pinot gris in France and pinot grigio in Italy and winemakers here have generally adapted these terms to reflect the style of wine they are producing. But choosing the right style for the right occasion – the French like their gris to be opulent and the Italians make refreshing grigio – isn’t always as easy as going for a gris or a grigio. When it comes to this grape, there are some grey areas. For example, a winemaker recently said to me, as he poured a glass of his estate’s pinot grigio: “We call it a grigio because of our Italian heritage, but it’s really made in the gris style.” That approach certainly muddies the waters for drinkers looking for a particular style of wine. In France, pinot gris is left to ripen longer than in Italy, which produces a wine of rich texture and flavour, while in Italy the grapes are picked early to create a refreshing wine that’s crisp and dry. By picking the grapes early, a winemaker can produce a wine with lovely blossom and citrus characters and refreshing acid – the kind of wine you want to drink on a hot day. As the grapes spend more time ripening on the vines, they start to develop power with richer pear and stonefruit flavours and smooth texture, because the natural acid in the grapes takes a back seat as the

amount of sugar increases in each grape. I reckon that both styles of what could be described as a chameleon of a grape are excellent food wines. Delicately flavoured grigio is excellent with the sort of food you find in its northern Italian homeland, such as antipasto platters and seafood pasta. The richer, more powerful flavours of a gris style are able to stand up to more robust dishes and those with some residual sugar handle spicy food. Duck and pinot noir is a famous match, but next time there’s some Chinese barbecue duck on the menu, head instead for the gris – its smoky notes are the perfect match for the crispy skin. For this reason, too, I’ll often drink a gris at a barbecue, especially if the person manning the tongs tends to burn the food. It’s improved many a meal at my father-in-law’s (he has earned the nickname Charcoal Chris), where the barbecue is on full-bore or not at all. \

The grey grape Pinot gris is closely related to pinot noir and is, in fact, a mutant clone that is thought to have developed a few centuries ago. As bunches ripen on the vines, individual berries can display a pretty spectrum of colour from pink to blue to grey, which gives the grape its name – grigio and gris are Italian and French for grey. The colours of the grape skins don’t darken enough to make red wine – grape juice is clear and it’s the skins that give red wine its colour – although some winemakers do encourage a pink hue in their pinot gris.

Pretty aromas of peach, beurre bosque pear, saline minerality and smoky notes are interesting and exotic. These are replicated on the palate with subtle power. The wine’s structure is a highlight with lovely, silky, pinot noir-like texture and a drying grip. It finishes with pear, ginger and spice notes in a lengthy finish.

From the slopes of Mount Canobolas, Angullong is a winery that has a good understanding of aromatic wines. This complex wine displays floral aromas of pear, apple, lychee and rose petals. Flavour-wise, it’s full of stone fruit, ripe pear, lemon and spice. Extended time on its lees has given the wine a textural feel along with a chalky grip and a nice line of lemon-flavoured acid. Some pithy citrus notes on the finish have good intensity and add a bit of character.

Winemaker Kathleen Quealy has delivered a wine of exotic, aromatic complexity with aromas and flavours you’re just as likely to find in a Middle-Eastern bazaar as you are in a bottle. Rose petals, musk stick, peach, pear and spice lead to a lovely mouthfeel that’s opulent yet crisp and refreshing. A slightly bitter, lemon-pith flavour on the finish adds another layer to the wine’s complexity and interest.

Fermented in a mix of stainless-steel tanks and old, oak barrels, this is a seamless wine that’s about flavour as much as it is structure. Its aromas are floral, with notes of pear, quince and jasmine, while it effortlessly moves to flavours of citrus, pear and spice that build and build as the wine slips along the tongue. Creamy in texture, it has a slight grip and vibrant acidity that’s balanced and fresh. Pithy citrus and a whiff of smoke are nicely pitched on the finish.

At home or away, these girls are putting a new face on Melbourne, writes JANE ROCCA.

ready to rock: ruby rose, below. (SUpplied)

T

here’s no denying that celebrity endorsements turn heads, but this time it’s models who are fast becoming the IT girl. Look at shoe label Tony Bianco’s latest coup – working with Bambi Northwood-Blyth for its spring/ summer 2011-12 season – to see that stepping up a campaign with the right face can do wonders for your brand. The model, who now lives in New York and comes back to our shores four times a year, was spending too much of her hard-earned cash living in hotel rooms – hence the definite move this year to a Manhattan West Side rental with her boyfriend. “I’ll still call Australia home,” she says. The emerging model is photographed wearing an adorable selection of high-heeled platforms and wedges in a stream of colours, what’s more she is also a guest blogger via the Tony Bianco website [another way the brand interacts with their core market in a Generation Y kinda way]. On the blog she tells curious fans about trips to the Bahamas and holidays in India. Managing director Anthony Bianco describes Bambi’s look as “having a Kate Moss feel”, which is clearly the direction he wants to take the family-run and -owned shoe empire that celebrates 40 years in 2012. “We were after the type of girl who gets up in the morning and effortlessly looks cool. Abbey-Lee, Jess Hart, Julia Nobis – they all have this presence around them – they’re not clotheshorses like some models. They epitomise cool,” says Bianco, sounding more like a fashion editor than a guy who runs a shoe label. “We had our eye on Bambi and watched her catapult overseas, but here in Australia, although the industry knew of her, she was just being used as a model,” he says. “We wanted to create a blog around her life, to be a point of difference and

show just how normal and down-to-earth Bambi is.” Australian-born Bambi [she changed her name from Stefanie] is adored for broad cheekbones and brooding eyebrows, which have often been compared to ’80s star Brooke Shields. She is signed to Elite Models in the US and walked the catwalks for Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs and Diesel. In the Bianco campaign, she wears Isabel Marant, Acne and Phillip Lim – high-end labels teamed with an everyday shoe. For someone who grew up wearing Bianco shoes, Northwood-Blyth is proud of the association. “Generally when I get something I really like, I don’t take it off until it’s worn out,” she says of her own shoe habit. Ruby Rose, who became famous as an MTV VJ, a reporter for The 7pm Project, a club DJ and as a runner-up in a 2002 Girlfriend model search competition, is another Melbourne IT girl. This sprightly 26-year-old can now add fashion designer to her repertoire, having launched Milk & Honey [featuring slashed leggings, mini skirts and bodices] last year. Rose is everywhere and there’s a reason for it. She’s not just a pretty face with an abundance of tattoos [although the point of difference helps]; she’s managed to make a career out

of modelling, TV presenting and being an ambassador for various charities and anti-bullying causes in such a short time. She was recently in LA working on her debut album [dropping names such as Sia and The Veronicas as those she hung out with to write tunes], and is a face many brands [including Maybelline NY mascara] want to associate with. This evening Rose will launch the new WTC Wharf precinct on the south side of the CBD. In all her hipster glory, she will promote [via her role as ambassador] a new line of restaurants and prop it up as a new social calendar destination in Melbourne. Where Bambi wears designer chic, Rose is big on being rocker stylish. She’s all glitz and glam, wearing gold, glittery sneakers on the day we meet in North Melbourne. Sporting a purple Mohawk, slashed pants and a black tank top, it’s her tattooed sleeve that really amps up her message. “I am a big advocate for Melbourne,” says Rose, who recently moved back here after working in Sydney for three years. “Melbourne is where I call home; it’s my favourite place to be. Fashion is fantastic, people are friendly and it’s a multicultural city. I was the face of Spring Fashion Week last year and I jump at any opportunity to promote my Melbourne. DJing on the waterfront [tonight] will be amazing. \

TT3D: Closer to the Edge is enjoyable, engaging and, yes, frequently exciting. Part character study, part action thriller, this doco follows the Isle of Man’s obscenely dangerous Tourist Trophy motorbike race. There are explosions, wince-worthy accidents and some stomach-shuddering 3D footage that bolts us onto the front of a bike at 270km/h. We’re left in no doubt as to the cause of its high mortality rate – an average of two to three deaths per year. But really we’re here for Guy Martin, an eccentric, moody motorbike obsessive determined to win his first race. As soon as he opens his runaway gob, the race itself becomes background colour. In a film that touches on the harsh reality of dangerous obsessions, he’s simply too good to be true. Those with more refined tastes might prefer to join

Guy MaRtin Woody Allen for his best film in years. Filling Woody’s shoes (such as John Cusack and Kenneth Branagh before him) is Owen Wilson, an exiled American author in love with the mythical Paris of the 1920s. Without explanation, Wilson’s character finds himself whisked back to this golden age, where he rubs shoulders with such notables as Gertrude Stein, Salvador Dali, Josephine Baker and the Fitzgeralds. Midnight in Paris is a beautifully sentimental, suitably magical and lavishly shot film that sweeps us up in its nostalgic obsessions. Owen Wilson is a fine analogue for Allen, but the greatest performances are waiting in the wings, as a stream of famous faces pops up for cameos as 1920s celebrities. With a single word, Adrien Brody’s Dali very nearly steals the show. \

METALS \ FEIST \ (Universal)

The much-awaited new LP from Canadian songstress Feist takes the current infatuation with the folkish and the pastoral and feeds it through a cheap transistor. At once rootsy and crackling with electricity, Metals occupies a grey hinterland between skyscraper and desert plain, campfire and neon. First track The Bad in Each Other comes in surges and swings, like Feist is squeezing her heart through the speaker with each new syllable. While brass bands and whooping chorus promise a big sound, this is a record that needs a few listens to really bed in. There’s certainly a new distance here. Even on intimate tracks such as Caught A Long Wind, the singer sounds trapped inside that transistor, fading in and out against a lush, if economical, backdrop. For the most part, this distance is effective, mirroring the disconnection of big city life. A Commotion, for example, is by turns uncomfortable and astonishing, capturing something of the panic and rush of the metropolis, with her slender voice nearly trampled in the middle. It isn’t an album likely to instantly woo, but there’s enough space and nuance here to suggest it’s an album we’ll still be listening to in a few years, when other crushes and infatuations have faded. \

LANIE LANE \ Northcote Social Club, Friday October 21

Sydney’s Lanie Lane is having a good year. Having spent the past 12 months touring with some top-tier local talent, she’s now gearing up to launch her debut LP To The Horses. Somewhere along the way she’s also found time to collaborate with king-size rock star Jack White and release a single on his Third Man Records label. This sudden ascendancy should surprise no one familiar with her work – an effortless, slightly swinging fusion of jazz, country and classic rock’n’roll. \ mbartlett@theweeklyreview.com.au

FOCUS ON BERTOLUCCI \

going out ACMI, October 20 to November 8 Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci is thrust into the spotlight for this two-week season. His entire oeuvre will be screened, most on brand-spanking new 35-millimetre prints. It’s a rare chance to soak in the colour and flair of films such as Stealing Beauty and Last Tango In Paris. The latter gets particular attention, thanks to French documentary Once Upon A Time … One of three docos showing here, the film takes a peek beneath the covers of Bertololucci’s erotic drama. It’s surprisingly frank, with lead actress Maria Schneider confessing she regrets not calling the police and having director and co-star Marlon Brando arrested during filming of the infamous butter scene. While the film places its focus on sex in the context of a broken world, it’s more interesting when it focuses on Brando. Like the director, he comes across as a man of vision, whose genius almost excuses the way he acts. Other highlights include new prints of The Conformist, Before The Revolution and the uncut version of Italian epic 1900. \

AN OBJECT OF BEAUTY by Anna Funder » $29.95 (Penguin)

PAUL BANGAY’S GUIDE TO PLANTS by Paul Bangay, photography by Simon Griffiths » $59.95 (Penguin)

Anna Funder takes her readers inside the heads of those who lived in Germany in the 1920s and early 1930s and who vehemently opposed Adolf Hitler. Who spoke up in the years when they were still free to do so, and what prompted their decisions to leave their home country while they could? Funder constructs her story around three left-wing protesters: Ruth Blatt, her charismatic cousin Dora and the playwright Ernst Toller. Placing Toller, who died in 1939, in a work of fiction was a risky move, and at times an unauthentic cloud casts its shadow across proceedings. But Funder is an excellent storyteller and the book is pacey and fascinating. \

Publisher Random House has thrown massive support behind Melbourne writer Elliot Perlman’s brilliant new novel, The Street Sweeper. From its editorial team, led by Nikki Christer, to the sales, marketing and publicity departments, Random House has shown great faith in a local author. Its hefty investment is already paying dividends. After its first weekend, The Street Sweeper had sold out at many of Melbourne’s indie bookshops. Astute bookworms have picked up on the buzz via their local booksellers, media coverage and their friends. The Street Sweeper proves that Melbourne’s book ecology works, and it’s thriving. It’s a similar story with Castlemaine writer Alex Miller’s much-anticipated new novel Autumn Laing, published by Allen and Unwin, Sydney-based Anna Funder’s All That I Am (Penguin), Alice Pung’s new memoir Her Father’s Daughter (Black Inc) and ABC regular Marieke Hardy’s essay collection You’ll Be Sorry When I’m Dead (also Allen and Unwin). These are just some, we hope, of the local titles that continue to challenge the doomsayers. Of course, those doomsayers are also welcome to visit a local bookshop one Saturday morning. Then let them tell you the indie is dead! \

“This is a very personal collection of favourite plants,’’ the author writes in the introduction to his latest elegant coffee table-style book. Bangay warns readers this is not an exhaustive list of plants to use in Australian gardens, but rather “a sort of catalogue of suggested plants for those who like my gardens and would like to create something special in their own plot”. Bangay has plenty of fans and we are certain this book will be a popular Christmas gift. Accompanied by Simon Griffiths’ beautiful photographs of Bangay-esque settings and plant choices, it’s hard to resist. \

REAMDE by Neal Stephenson » $35 (Atlantic Books)

THE DISCIPLES by James Mollison » $39.95 (Chris Boot)

If we had to predict this summer’s unexpected thriller blockbuster, it would be US writer Neal Stephenson’s new tome on Chinese cyber hackers, Russian mobsters, a Fortune 500 computer game entrepreneur called Richard Forthrast, and his niece Zula, whose boyfriend sells information about Forthrast’s multiplayer fantasy game, T’Rain. When a virus spreads via the misspelt subject line “Reamde”, the world’s T’Rain community – and eventually the world – is threatened. Can Zula track down the virus writer? Will Richard lose his fortune? Will you ever again feel safe downloading your emails? \

Over three years, Kenyan-born, Venice-based photographer James Mollison snapped die-hard fans of music stars in the outfits of their various heroes. The result is a brilliant collection of images, first published in a big art book format in 2008 and now available in a smaller, more affordable hardcover format. The Disciples features 57 panoramic images of fans mimicking their particular heroes, including Iggy Pop, the Rolling Stones, Iron Maiden, Madonna, 50 Cent, and Dolly Parton. Brilliant idea, brilliant participants, brilliant book. \

Built by Darnley Homes five years ago, this double-storey residence provides modern family living. The downstairs floor plan caters perfectly to a big family. The spacious kitchen is the central hub of the space surrounded by two living areas and a dining area. Plenty of windows to the east and west and sliding glass doors to the north-facing backyard make the whole place very bright. Out the back is a terraced, landscaped space, plenty of kids’ play equipment and a decked undercover entertainment area with in-built barbecue. Three raised garden beds provide space for a vegie garden. The four upstairs bedrooms are bright with built-in wardrobes, the main with enormous en suite and walk-through wardrobe. Ducted heating and cooling, double lock-up garage and water tanks are additional features. This part of MacLeod has a village feel on the edge of La Trobe University with well-landscaped streets. Schools are nearby, as are sports facilities and a bus network. \ Emma HougHton

Step back in time with this 1927 period house. The 1920s wall telephone at the entrance reminds you that some things are just meant to stay. The floorboards, high ceilings and mustard feature walls set the scene of this three-bedroom residence that creatively mixes old with new. The lounge at the entrance continues through to the family room, which can also serve as the formal dining area. It is near the kitchen, which has turquoisecoloured benchtops and large windows. A bedroom nearby has treetop views. Two more bedrooms are at the front of the house and share a bathroom. Leave the 1920s and head downstairs, where you step into the 2000s. A modern renovation and extension has transformed this level into a contemporary, self-contained apartment. The neutral colour scheme throughout the bedroom, bathroom, kitchenette and lounge/dining areas means you can jazz the place up any way you like. Glass sliding doors open to the undercover entertaining area. \ BIANCA VILLAROSA

This well-maintained property has been spruced up, so all you and your family need to do is move in. The large windows provide plenty of natural light and the polished floorboards and quality fixtures are bonuses. The hallway continues through to the main hub of the house where all the action happens. The kitchen has a red feature wall, stainless-steel appliances and steps up to the lounge/dining area. In summer, spill outside to the undercover patio and entertain friends. You can also step up to the lawn where the kids will have plenty of room to play. Upstairs is a perfect retreat area, or it could be an oversized bedroom. Doors open onto a large balcony that overlooks the backyard. Two bedrooms are at the front of the house and have built-in wardrobes. The main bedroom also has built-in wardrobes and an en suite with teal-blue tiles. This house also features ample storage and a workshop. It is close to Montmorency station and Were Street shops. \ BIANCA VILLAROSA
