y friend’s eyes widened like an owl watching a horror movie: “Everything’s just awful, isn’t it? I mean, it’s all just gone to hell!”. It hasn’t, of course. But I know what she means. You can’t say it often enough, can you? What a year. What a bloody year. This publication turns one this edition, and in reflecting on the 12 months during which the magazine came to life, I’m surprised that anything could survive and flourish. Political leaders were slain and defeated (and with them went the last vestiges of faith and trust of many Australian voters); young people stood up to old despots and were gunned down for their impudence; markets crashed and communities drowned; the earth trembled and the seas surged. Very little seemed to stay in its place. So much changed. Has it all gone to hell? I think some dearly held articles of faith perhaps have. That a well-intentioned and peaceful revolution only calling for individual freedom and hope will cow the craven tyrant; that’s gone. That the most sophisticated societies on earth can prepare for and defend against the simple terrors of water, rain and fire: no faith there any more. This time has surely left us feeling more child-like than ever before; that we are at the whim of forces, natural and self-made, that we have no defences against. That is humbling, and more than a little frightening.

we have become vicious to each other … we are losing a sense of grace One key, civilising principle that seems to have been overturned in the chaos is that basic sense of faith in people. We have become vicious to each other. The public discussion turns so nimbly now to the brutally personal, the annihilating. We are losing a sense of grace. I’ve tracked some of the incivility in this column over the past year: the young mum who is mercilessly attacked for saying that she doesn’t find parenting hard; the troubled young woman, justifiably angry at the misogynistic culture of AFL football, is belted across the Twitterverse for being that most unforgivable thing – a difficult woman. And the daily contempt and ordure that is heaped on anyone who dares to take up public life. Well, maybe some of them brought that on themselves … I fear many holds are no longer barred. I fear that for anyone even accidentally caught in the public eye, everything is now going to get viciously personal.

And what possible future arises from all this? After a year in world events, natural disasters and domestic politics that would have disillusioned even the most avid interpreters of Nostradamus with its wild unpredictability, I’m not prepared to say. But I will share this intriguing forecast with you. It comes from one of the most senior Liberals in the country, and it was made confidently and emphatically – albeit after a few. This person predicts that by the time of the next federal election, Malcolm Turnbull will be leading the party, and will go on to lead the Coalition to victory. Now, how could this be, when Tony Abbott is doing so well in the polls and the government appears to be falling apart? It’s the Menzies principle, says my informant. When you are this close to winning, you want to make it an absolute certainty, and Turnbull – with his support across the entire spectrum of Australian politics – nails that down for you, just as Menzies did. The Liberal added, that just like Menzies, Turnbull also has a remarkably large head – literally, not just figuratively – although what that has to do with anything, I have no idea. You see how personal it’s all going to get? \

Jill Baker won one of journalism’s highest awards, the Melbourne Press Club’s Gold Quill, for her moving story detailing her battle with breast cancer. PETER WILMOTH spoke with her.

I

n the time since she was diagnosed with breast cancer, Jill Baker found she was not only juggling her own emotions, awkwardness and sensitivities, but apparently everyone else’s too. “I think people don’t know what to say. When you’ve got no hair and you’re wearing a scarf, the options are that you are trying out for the new Sex and the City movie or that you’re having chemotherapy and you’ve got no hair. So everybody knows you’re sick and quite genuinely a lot of people wonder ‘Is she going to make it? How sick is she going to be? Is she ever going to be back to her normal self?’ “And I think people want to ask but they don’t know how to. My view is that I was always happy to talk to people. I didn’t really want to talk about survival odds but, apart from that, it’s a public disease.

“You walk up the street and you walk into a shop and you’ve got a scarf on and no matter how big your earrings are or how much make-up you’ve got on, you are clearly having chemotherapy. I was in a shop a couple of months ago and a lady walked up and said ‘I hope you don’t mind me asking, have you just finished chemotherapy?’ And I was a bit taken aback. I thought my hair was long enough … She was lovely. She said ‘I finished chemotherapy about three or four years ago and my hair went through a stage where it looked just like yours’. “You are desperate to look normal and well, and that’s why I’m desperate at the moment to stop looking like Mia Farrow on a very, very bad day and start looking less boy-like and more like a girl.” Jill Baker is deputy editor of the Herald Sun. Last month she won one of journalism’s highest awards – a Gold Quill – for her story in the Herald Sun detailing the unexpected death of her husband last year, followed three months later by a diagnosis of breast cancer, radiation treatment and six months of chemotherapy. We are talking in her office at the newspaper. This is a slightly odd experience because, to declare an interest, I worked with Jill for years. The day she was appointed editor of The Sunday Age, the phone rang. “Hi Peter, it’s Jill. I’m ringing to say that we’re about to start an exciting time at the paper and I want you on the journey with me.” Fifteen years later I still remember that call, and how inspired it made me feel. It was a mark of her humanity, not to mention her management skills. Loyalty to her from her staff showed every week in the newspaper. We all pushed ourselves hard for Jill. Growing up in Camberwell and attending Strathcona Baptist Girls Grammar, Jill’s parents wanted her to be a lawyer, but she was interested in newspapers and held out for a cadetship at the Melbourne Herald. She went on to write for and edit at The Age and The Sunday Age before moving to Australian Consolidated Press, where she oversaw a stable of magazines. She spent some time in book publishing before returning to her true love, daily journalism. When encouraged by a friend to write the piece, Jill knew she had to tell the whole story. She admires the courage people show with journalists. “They talk about the most important things in their lives, the things that really matter to them and often really personal things and often really terrible things about love ones that they’ve lost … and they have incredible courage and they trust us enormously to tell their story in the way they want it to be told. “So I guess part of my trepidation when I sat down with a computer was to say ‘Right, well, can I do this?’. Was I going to be brave enough to put it on a piece of paper and then see it go into every copy of the Herald Sun? There were lots of bits that I would have liked to have left out, but … I knew if I wasn’t honest that everyone who has either gone through it themselves or know someone who has gone through it … would read 6 The weekly review \ may 4, 2011

it and go ‘You know what? It actually isn’t like that’. So I decided that if I was going to do it, it has to tell everything. And I think I did tell everything.” The article was accompanied by a photograph of Jill with no hair. “I never wanted to have a picture of me with no hair in the paper,” she says. “I thought about that really hard and I decided that if the Herald Sun was going to interview a woman who had a story like mine and if I were sending a reporter out to do that, when we were discussing the story beforehand I would most likely would say ‘Look, I’m not sure whether this woman will have lost her hair or not and I’m not sure whether she’ll have a wig or a bald head or she’ll have a scarf on but ask her once and ask her politely would she be happy to be photographed with a bald head? If the answer is no, move on. Absolutely fine.’ “And I decided that if we, as journalists, will ask other people to do that, I can’t do this story and not do that

“I never wanted to have a pIcture of me wIth no haIr In the paper.”

myself. So I said to the photographer ‘Right, OK, you’re going to do a picture of me with a wig on, picture of me with scarf on, picture of me with bald head.’ I’ve actually never looked at the pictures and I suspect I never will.” The article received a strong reaction. “I was in the supermarket after work … and this lady came up and said ‘Are you Jill? I hope you don’t mind, I’ve got two of my friends over there, we all read your story and we all cried and they’d like to say hello.’ One lady said ‘Jill, we just want to tell you we think you look really beautiful with no hair and no eyelashes.’ ”

S

he speaks about those early traumatic days when, still grieving for her husband, she had to deal with painful chemotherapy. “I’d be sitting in my oncologist’s waiting room and the place opposite where you have the chemotherapy is full of all sorts of people who have terrible stories, a lot of them, and my story isn’t any more special than any of those people’s stories. And you sit there and there are young people, there are old people, there are people with kids. The doctors and the nurses try everything to make it as bearable as possible, but at the end of the day it’s incredibly difficult. “Every three weeks you are being injected with these drugs that are designed to kill cancer cells, and let’s hope they do, but they make you really sick. Before any of this happened, I knew that I had a body but I guess last year I found out I was a body, and (it) was

something that had to be fixed, and that meant a couple of lots of surgery, six months of chemotherapy. “I think some people sailed through it. I just wasn’t one of those people. I got septicaemia. I had bad reactions to one of the specific chemo drugs. It was incredibly rugged, I really felt like I’d gone from a healthy person to someone who was actually struggling on a day-to-day basis.” When initially diagnosed, Jill wasn’t certain she wanted to have the treatment. “Right at the beginning I was probably vulnerable, I was grieving … I got to the point where I thought ‘Well, can I be bothered doing this? Honestly, this is going to be six months of incredibly rigorous medical treatment followed by radiation treatment and I actually don’t know whether I can be bothered with any of that’, and I seriously thought for a few days ‘I reckon France looks really good, why don’t I just nick off over there and I’ll live in some little house with a cute garden out the front and make pots of jam and have a really nice time and we’ll see what happens?’ “I suspect quite a few people think those sorts of things. But after a few days I thought ‘Jill, you actually have to do this’. And the doing this is having the first lot of surgery because you don’t know that all the rest of it is going to happen. So you hope at that point that you have one lot of surgery and that’s going to be fine and then maybe you have to have some radiation treatment and then life resumes as normal. “I guess the problem in my case is that it isn’t quite like that … Once you get into it you think ‘I’ve come this far, maybe I should just go a bit further’. There were a few moments in the chemotherapy where I was on the verge of ringing up and saying ‘Stop the bus’.” Did she find a strength that surprised her? “I suspect a lot of my doctors and I suspect all of my friends were surprised that at the end of it all I was sort of vertical, talking, doing things, trying to come to work. At the time I just felt incredibly physically vulnerable. I was struggling to do the most basic things, like go for a walk.” She started back at work part-time, and her colleagues were great. “Everyone is trying to work out what they should say (or do). ‘Should I ask Jill about it? Should I say nothing about it? Should I say I like her earrings? Should I say her scarf looks nice?’ I just want to be treated like normal me. Nothing special.” An editor said to her: “Don’t worry about it, Jill. I’ll put a bucket in my office and you can vomit and then get straight back to work.” “It totally reassured me that I was supposed to be there and wasn’t being a burden.” But there were so many hard days. One day in January Jill took her scarf off for the first time after nine months. “The day you take it off is the day that you remember.” Without the scarf, she says, “it’s like walking around in the nude”. She went to her hairdresser and said “Desley, do I look decent?” Desley said “Yep, you’re decent, Jill.” At home Jill looked in the bathroom mirror and saw “these little tiny spindly bits of hair on what was essentially a pretty bald head”. She drove off for work and had a minor bingle with a vehicle whose owner wasn’t happy. It began to rain. “What hair there was was slicked back on my skull,” she remembers. “The man was saying things about people who run into cars. I couldn’t think of anything to say to him so I said ‘Have you seen my hair?’ and he gave me this look that men give women at Bunnings when you go in and ask for a thingamabob. I was just sobbing.

I didn’t know what to say, so I turned around and walked off.” Walking into the office, someone said, “Jill, you look like a rock chick.” “I burst into tears again. At the office it was tears everywhere, people all around and people going ‘Jill, what’s the problem?’ and I’m going ‘I’m sorry, it’s just my hair’.” Hair and eyelashes, she says, are important for a woman. “I think that’s a girly thing. Hair does matter. I think eyelashes matter. I’m sorry but for me, in the middle of chemo, my eyelashes fell out after about three months. So I had no hair for the whole time, but your eyelashes stay for a while, then fall out. “I said to my oncologist ‘Michael, can you do anything about eyelashes?’ And he gave me one of those looks as if to say ‘Why are you asking me about that?’, which I think is probably a bloke thing. Most blokes couldn’t care less about eyelashes but to me it’s hard to try and look healthy if you’ve got a) no hair, b) no eyebrows and c) no eyelashes.” Her experience with cancer has changed the way she looks at her life. “I think I’ll end up living a much simpler life than I did. Some of the things I probably would have got fussed about a few years ago I can’t get fussed about any more. Really, a lot of that stuff really doesn’t matter. There are a few things in life that really do matter, and one is obviously being healthy … most people have never been really sick, so they haven’t had to think “Well, am I going to make it through this? Am I going to live ’til I’m 80? They’ve never thought of that.

Resuming Life

“I’ve decided that you don’t have to live ’til you’re 80 to have lived a worthwhile life. I hope that I live until I’m 80, maybe a little beyond, but cancer is one of those things – you have all the treatment, you live a healthy life, but at the end of the day there’s a chance it may come back. And if it does come back, they may be able to fix it or make it go away or maybe they can’t, and I think you’ve got to find a space in your head to actually get your head around that issue. Because if you don’t, you are sitting there going ‘I am going to be well, I am going to be well’.” Jill Baker is a remarkable woman and there was a lot of love in the room when she won her Quill. And now she’s charging on. In the past three weeks she is starting to feel better. “I’ve started running,” she says. “When I say running, I’ve started shuffling. I’ve got a little bit of hair, as you can see, and I’ve got eyelashes and I’m resuming life.” \

Put your best foot forward at this new shop, writes JANe RoCCA.

I

f as the old saying goes, you can’t judge a book by its cover but you can judge a man by his shoes, then you’d better send him to Beggar Man Thief – a new men’s shoe and accessories shop in South Melbourne – where no bloke can put a foot wrong. When it comes to footwear, so many men get it wrong or simply don’t pay enough attention to shoe detailing. Many live life in one of two ways – those who appreciate quality and style; and those who don’t. If the shoe maketh the man, then there’s little point in fiddling with your image if you aren’t going to have a crack at making the change from head to toe. Beggar Man Thief’s co-founders – Scott Lewis and his long-time friend and partner Marc Godfrey – set out to make a difference when they opened their shop last year. Located in a beautifully converted site that was built in 1877, the emphasis is on quality European shoes and handpicking styles that suit the Australian male. “Our customers are understated, fashion conscious not fashion fixated, so the brands represent real quality

across quite a broad style range,” says Lewis. It stocks English brands such as Grenson and Loake (they make shoes for the Queen) as well as Australian brand Vanishing Elephant, with more local brands making their way onto the shelves for spring this year. The shop is all about mixing brands, styles and price points – to keep blokes looking good without hurting the hip pocket. “Don’t be so conservative; buy quality and the shoe will get better and look better with age,” says Lewis. “Get the proportions of the shoes right with the pants and buy a shoe that is versatile and you know you’ll wear it often. And for God’s sake get off your black-shoe fixation.” European shoes tend to suit slighter builds and fit smaller, narrow feet, and Beggar Man Thief knows this only too well. That’s why importance has been placed on selecting styles that suit the Aussie dimensions (so to speak). “Australian guys are not European guys. Most Aussie blokes are between 75 and 95 kilograms and have bodies

that have done early years of sport and later years of beer drinking,” says Lewis. “They wear pants that are broader in the leg, so it’s no use putting a 90-kilogram Australian guy who wears straight-leg jeans or suit pants into a narrow Italian shoe. I think Australian guys are just as eager (to be fashionable) but they are not being serviced like the European guys.” Lewis recommends a Goodyear welted leather brogue boot for winter (these originated in Scotland and Ireland and are known for their sturdy durability) or a classic elastic-sided Chelsea boot for everyday wear. In fact, a pair of boots are a must in any man’s wardrobe – so whether you go for a Chelsea boot, a desert boot or a lace-up style, make sure you have at least one pair to switch into midweek or on weekends. The renowned Grenson brand from Britain prides itself on using the manufacturing process known as Goodyear welted, which can be traced back to more than 300 years, means that the product lasts longer and the shoe can be resoled time and again. And when it comes to warmer months, a leather Derby shoe is a must. It’s all about versatility and comfort, according to Lewis. “It’s nice to go into a super high-end shop but a lot of typical guys find those environments uncomfortable,” he says. “Australian guys are easy, so if you make shopping easy for them, they’ll come in droves. Make them feel uncomfortable and they’d rather do something else. Not rocket science, really.” \

own to earth. It’s a phrase that has become the preserve of celebrities gorged on success, trotted out in an attempt to imply a fleeting connection to terra firma before they angle their noses firmly skywards. But, somehow, it’s the only way to describe Wayne Quilliam. Maybe it’s because he settles down for a chat on the floor of his study, the one room in his house not cheerily carpeted by his daughter’s playthings. Maybe it’s the shorts and T-shirt he’s dressed in, or his voice, low and gravelly. Or maybe it’s the humility, entirely at odds with his resumé. A list of Quilliam’s accolades would be longer than this article. His work has been shown in every continent but Antarctica, and he’s racked up more than a century of exhibitions on top of appearances in more than 600 books and magazines, from Marie Claire to the official publication of the United Nations. He’s worked with more celebrities than there are in a checkout-line magazine rack and was the official photographer for, among others, the Australian government’s apology to the stolen generations in 2008. Quilliam, 48, is a big, bald bulldog of a man, the canine comparison coming courtesy of a countenance that would be menacing were it not so likeable. There is a raw, untamed quality to his photographs, and his anecdotes and opinions are similarly unvarnished. In short, he loves having a yarn, and this trait forms the centrepiece of his photographic technique. “The camera sits down half the time, and I develop a relationship with my subject,” Quilliam says. He stresses the importance of making a “connection” – it is a word he will return to again and again. “Apparently I’m outside the box on this, immersing myself in whatever I do. Maybe it’s because I never went to photography school. I’m not saying that people who keep themselves away from the story are wrong, but I can’t do it. “I watch other photographers and see how detached they are from their subjects – I have to be involved. I want to know why I’m there; I want to know who you are. Everyone’s got a story, and the story is everything.” As a result, you’d be hard-pressed to hear a shutter click through all the chatter. This interview started out with Quilliam asking “What are your favourite kind of articles?” and it was a good while before he started answering questions instead of asking them. “It wasn’t my photo skills that were the selling point, it was the social interaction. I could work with remote Aboriginal communities out in the Kimberleys and I could sit down and photograph the Prime Minister. It’s all the same to me,” he says. “Technically I’m inept as a photographer. I do it by feel. I try never to set anything up. It tends to work better because people are more comfortable.” Quilliam says the taboo of portraying the name or image of a deceased Aboriginal person is fading in urban and some rural communities, but remains prevalent in traditional ones. “But I go through the right protocols, and 99 per cent of the time I don’t get knocked back. If someone says, ‘I don’t want you to use it’, I would never use it,” he says. “That’s why I maintain total copyright on all my images. I never sell them outright, I lease them. And I stipulate that at any time I can pull the image. I won’t break any rules. I upset people when they need to be upset, but not my own mob, because there’s nothing worse than getting speared in the leg.” Quilliam’s work means that he spends most of the year abroad, often spending time with other indigenous cultures and delighting in the similarities he discovers. “In indigenous cultures in Bolivia, Mexico, Vietnam, Cambodia, the social structure is very similar to our own. There is a kinship system, a family structure, the acknowledgement of our connection to the earth and to each other that I tend to find very strong,” he says.

Heart & Soil

For a man who takes pictures, Wayne Quilliam really loves words. Hari raJ talks (and talks) to him. Cultural connection: In indigenous cultures in Bolivia, Mexico, Vietnam, Cambodia, the social structure is very similar to our own. (WAYNE QUILLIAM)

“I’m not overly spiritual, but when I’m out there I feel something that makes me gel with the country and the earth. When I’m out bush – in the deserts or in the islands – I feel I’m at home. When I’m in the city, I love it, but I’m not connected to it.” No matter where he is in the world, the introduction is the same: “My name is Wayne Quilliam and I’m an Aboriginal photographer.” He wields the term with immense pride, like a standard-bearer marching at the head of an army, as if it is just as important for his audience to know his heritage as it is for him. “I see it that way because my outlook, my vision of this world, is from an indigenous perspective. Photography comes second,” Quilliam says.

This brings to mind recent legal proceedings against Andrew Bolt in which it was alleged that a series of blog posts by the Herald Sun writer intimated that it was politically and occupationally fashionable to insist on a racial identity not readily apparent from pigmentation alone. The posts accused many of adopting this approach. But there was one name that wasn’t mentioned – Wayne Quilliam. “The thing that offended me most about that piece was that I wasn’t included in it,” Quilliam says. Perhaps he is joking. Perhaps not. This is, after all, a man who had ticked the relevant box upon entering the navy, only to be told by a recruiting officer that he couldn’t possibly

be Aboriginal because he was too light. Growing up in Tasmania, Quilliam had no record of his ancestry other than a photograph of his grandmother, a “full-blood blackfella”. He and his siblings were told they were Aboriginal, but they had no connection. Quilliam uses the word to describe the process of a person embracing their roots. He has made the connection, as has his younger brother, but his sister hasn’t. “My younger sister doesn’t identify. But that’s her personal choice. It’s a very individual thing.” Then comes clarity. It took years of effort and study at home and abroad, time spent sitting around a campfire “like a wide-eyed schoolgirl” listening to stories of the Dreaming, for Quilliam to come to terms with his heritage. Even now he refuses to make assumptions. “I can’t just walk into communities in the central desert or the Northern Territory or Queensland and say that I’m Aboriginal and I know what I’m doing. After 20 years I still don’t. You always ask what is the best way to do something. You sit back and listen,” he says. To be Aboriginal is not a claim he makes lightly, and he does not see the merit of a debate of the genetics of the soul over the genetics of the flesh. “To me that’s irrelevant. I used to be worried about it, but now if you don’t recognise I’m Aboriginal, that’s your problem, not mine,” Quilliam says.

U

nsurprisingly, there’s a pretty good story behind Quilliam’s first encounter with a camera. “I joined the photography class in high school because there was a hot chick in there, and I thought I would get in the darkroom and, well, you never know. I started taking photos and I was absolutely useless,” he says. But photography was left behind when Quilliam left

school as a 15-year-old to join the navy, and remained just a hobby until he returned from the navy and was working as a chimney cleaner in Hobart. One day, he entered a customer’s house and was floored by a series of “stunning” black-and-white photographs. “Her father had passed away and she was going to get rid of all the stuff, so I cleaned her chimney in exchange for her father’s photography equipment,” says Quilliam. Then it all came into focus. First came a stint at the

Koori Mail, where Quilliam reported and snapped pictures. He travelled around Australia for three years, visiting Aboriginal communities, living in a van. Along the way he met his wife, Jodie. The couple spent seven years living in Canberra, at the dawn of the digital age of cameras, and Jodie decided the time had come to invest in a new one. It was a three-megapixel Kodak, costing a hefty $6000. “She just said, ‘Do you want to take this seriously or not?’,” Quilliam says, with an almost rueful shake of the head. “She’s the rock of the family. She’s an amazing woman. People write articles about what I do, and what I do is fun and colourful, but that woman has a bloody career, looks after about 20 staff, looks after the house, and she looks after our little girl. She’s the backbone of what I do.” The couple have a young daughter, Tanisha, from whom Quilliam was apart for nine months of last year. “My wife would say I’m gone far too much sometimes and not enough other times,” he says, grinning, but sobering swiftly. “When I’m away for a week at a time, when I’m lying awake in a hotel in the middle of nowhere, you can speak to your wife and daughter on the phone, but it’s not enough. You’ve got to get home. “I’ve got two grown-up sons and four grandkids and I love them to death. They live in Tassie, so I don’t get to see them, but being given a chance to have a little girl is wonderful. It’s helped with my photography, too. Everything’s special again. “The trouble is that I try to work but I end up playing tea parties. I can’t wait until she’s old enough to come with me on trips, but her mother’s not looking forward to it. I go to some very remote, very dangerous places. I’ve been bitten by snakes and spiders, I’ve fallen down cliffs, I’ve done all these ridiculous things. I know when my little girl gets older she’s going to want to come with

me, and my wife’s going to go, ‘Oh God’.” Next up, Quilliam will turn to teaching as an adjunct professor at RMIT, where he says he will be able to help people learn in a more practical manner. “I’m still in the infancy of my career. I’ve got so much more to do and so much more to offer. I’m trying to share my experiences with my people and other cultures – I could make a fortune with photography, but if I don’t share my knowledge I’m not being true to myself,” he says. To this end, Quilliam also appears frequently on the global lecture circuit. At the time of this interview, he had just completed a series in Guam, Mexico, Indonesia, Germany and Austria. “My mouth got dry but I had a ball,” he says. “Every

session was packed. If I do it here five people would rock up. It still amazes me that overseas cultures are more interested in Aboriginal culture than Australians.” This is why Quilliam isn’t worried about overexposure in Australia, despite being as prolific as he is. “We’ve all got a connection, and my connection hopefully will influence John and Mary Smith from down the road. Most people will only ever see the drunks and the deaths, but if they can see a strong, positive Aboriginal man living among them, they may think differently about who we are,” he says. “And, being totally self-absorbed, it’s very good for business. I’ve never got a cent from government funding in my life, not a grant or a loan. Exposure is everything to me, and

to Aboriginal youth. It shows them you can transition from Aboriginal media to the mainstream.” But don’t tell Quilliam he’s a role model. “Please don’t model yourself on me. I’d like to influence people to believe they can be bigger and better than what they are, but ‘role model’ is a term I think is overused these days,” he says. “I have no role models. I appreciate and respect and am in awe of other people’s work, but the reality is you make yourself. I only want to influence my kids, and hopefully to be a better man.” \

Just an ordinary man: Quilliam inisists that he should not be seen as a role model. (WAYNE QUILLIAM)

Dickson blends iPads and other semi-precious consumables to dust in a tech-eats-tech world. Besides being excellent advertising, it’s a poignant statement about our obsession with possessions; they’re so very temporary. Heedless consumption is shoving the globe into a blender and, according to Mother Earth – volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis, cyclones, flood and fire – we’re about to achieve our lowest goal yet by pulverising ourselves. It’s a fearsome call to attention, but the upheavals confronting us herald a necessary new world order. Natural disasters aren’t the only extraordinary weekly news. Headlining events in recent decades represent huge cultural shifts: the first African-American president, so many female presidents, prime ministers and premiers, the crumbling of financial institutions (stockmarket crashes, global financial crisis) and

The challenge is to live more purely

religious order (the flailing of Catholicism, the popularity of spirituality).

For those interested in all things spiritual, the world’s turning point is old news. We’re heading out of the astrological age of Pisces (humanity directed by leaders great and poor from Jesus Christ to Stalin) and into the age of Aquarius, which urges us to evolve to a new level of enlightened consciousness. The challenge is to live more purely, to raise the electromagnetic energy of our bodies and minds to a higher vibration, a lighter energy. The signs are vibrantly clear: from the yoga pandemic and the rise of professional counselling and energy-based healing modalities to the environmental and personal-development movements that encourage more conscious living. Some bemoan the rise of individualism as selfish, but at its heart is the Aquarian invocation to spring clean our personal clutter and value systems. Once your house is in order, you have the energy and clarity spare to focus on world service. Humanity is being asked to awaken collectively, to understand that our task on this planet is to live not only harmoniously as a global entity but with all living beings. Don’t just save the whales, save the bees that underpin our food supply! Become a Buddhist, one of Australia’s fastest-growing religions, and learn detachment from possessions alongside love of “all sentient beings”. Allow a dud film such as Eat Love Pray to inspire us to take stock of life and how we’re living it.

Keeping it nice and simple

As David Suzuki forcefully reiterated during February’s Great Debate, Is Environmentalism Failing?, as part of the Sustainable Living Festival: “We are one species out of 10 to 30 million species on the planet and we think we can take over 88 per cent of the planet and survive. We humans are the centre of the crisis but we need to see ourselves as part of the fabric of a mass of living things. As long as we remain human-centric (we face catastrophe). We need to be biocentric.” Bruce Lipton, the cellular biologist known for creating a bridge between science and spirituality who featured in What the Bleep Do We Know?, notes in his first e-newsletter for this year that the upheavals around the globe – political, natural, cultural, economical – signal a “state of quickening” in humanity’s evolution. And we can choose to respond in three ways: ignore or deny the collective crises, both of which equal extinction sooner rather than later, or move towards it, which is the growth response. Happily, says Lipton, fresh from worldwide speaking engagements on our evolution towards enlightenment, “a massive and ever-growing world population is now responding to the perceived darkness with a life-sustaining, growth-promoting behaviour – the creation of conscious communities”. In the wake of every natural disaster, the world has joined hands in prayer, funding and resources. But Lipton is also talking about people who volunteer, who dedicate themselves to greater causes, anyone involved in community-service-oriented or personal-growth activities. People who are lifting themselves out of the mire of consumerism to serve a higher calling – each other.

As Australian Conservation Foundation president Professor Ian Lowe, also at The Great Debate, so eloquently noted: “We will have to live more simply in the future so that others may simply live.” Which leaves the iPad in the blender and humanity hunting for an alternative. How to move forward? “If we focus our attention on the scary state of civilisation’s erosion, our energy is actually feeding the old paradigm,” says Lipton. “I don’t mean that we should put our heads in the sand … we should … channel the energy into processes designed to create a more harmonious planet. Survival is enhanced by working for something positive rather than working against something negative.” Professor Lowe agrees. Let’s articulate a new vision for a sustainable world that people can see, hear, smell and taste. This is the advice spiritualists have been handing out for years: “What you see will be.” To be part of the solution we could spend five minutes before rising visualising a peaceful, harmonious world (thoughts are energy; energy output equals action). Or learn to meditate. Adopt a value system that supports the world, not just the Aussie dream. Says Lipton: “The world is awakening to the fact that each of us is a powerful co-creator of life, and if we co-operate, like cells in a healthy human body, we can literally create heaven on Earth.” Ah, that sounds familiar. A little Beatle once told me: You may say that I’m a dreamer, But I’m not the only one I hope someday you’ll join us And the world will live as one. \

very old and rare tree produces wonderfully fragrant flowers for a short time at the end of summer. The essence of real beauty lies in its transience – a child’s laughter, a sunset, a harvest moon. For centuries poets have urged us to cherish the moment. The romantic poet, John Keats, pondered the impermanence of beauty in nature. His own passionate life was tragically brief. He died of tuberculosis aged just 26. Most readers will be familiar with the Gardenia augusta, which bears white scented flowers for most of the year. Less well known is the rare, slow-growing Gardenia thunbergia. A member of the coffee family, the Tree Gardenia originated in Africa. It can reach a height of 3.6 metres and spread up to 4.6 metres across. This elegant evergreen has broad, deep-green, glossy leaves and pretty, highly perfumed flowers. A tubular bud opens out to a single white periwinkle-shaped flower. The Vial family is lucky enough to have one of these rare beauties in their garden in Stonnington. They believe their Tree Gardenia is between 80 and 100 years old and they treat it with the respect it deserves. A rolling wave of lawn leads the eye to their prized tree, situated in a small garden of its own. The family looks forward to the appearance of the first flowers each February and delights in the tree’s beauty and perfume for the brief duration of its flowering season. Mandy Vial says: “We especially love it when the heady fragrance drifts into the house on warm evenings.” When designing her garden, Mandy didn’t want it to be “too perfect” or formal. “I wanted to be able to meander through it,” she says. The end result is relaxed and gracious.

Treasured moments: Mandy Vial (opposite page) loves spending time in her garden with the family dog.

There is a lot to enjoy in this garden. One walks beneath the arching arm of a magnificent Manchurian pear at the front gate and a pair of silver birches guards the front door. Over there is a Ginkgo biloba tree with its oriental fan-shaped leaves, here a path winds around an old pomegranate tree, its sensuous fruit just beginning to form. You’ll find ripe fruit on the apple and pear trees. A luxuriant wisteria winds around the verandah but, for the moment, forget about all these, and give your full attention to the Gardenia thunbergia. Think of Keats and simply admire the beauty of this spectacular tree in fragrant flower while it lasts. \

Eltham, part of Melbourne’s green wedge on the fringe of suburbia, is steeped in history. The builder of the house at 60 Kent Hughes Road is also remembered in a park that is named after him. The six-hectare Alistair Knox Park, once the site of small farms, became the local tip and finally in the 1970s was turned into parkland that gained a National Trust Landscape classification. The park’s designers were four major figures in urban bush landscape design – Knox, landscape designer Gordon Ford, artist Peter Glass and landscaper Ivan Stranger. Shillinglaw Cottage, a brick house built about 1859 and now used as a restaurant and café, has been relocated to the park. The railway trestle bridge, which opened in 1902, is on the northern edge of the park. Although all the timbers have been replaced and pylons and wiring for electric trains were added in the 1920s, it is one of only a few similar bridges in the Melbourne metropolitan area. Native plants, lawns, small lakes and a footbridge over the creek are part of the landscape, which also includes a playground and barbecue areas. The manna gums and candlebarks are important natural features. How this suburb has moved: Up by 1.6 per cent in the quarter to March 2011 * REIV stats

ome houses take many months to build. Some take years. This one took four years. Which is not a reflection on the builder – Alistair Knox – but rather on shortages following World War II. Knox began building the house in 1948 and it was not finished until 1952, largely because of a shortage of glass and other materials. According to the owners, Hamish Knox, the builder’s son, recalled playing on the site when he was a small boy while his father worked on the building. The timber and rendered house with large timber corner posts, is believed to have been the second house Knox built in Eltham. He later became famous for his mud brick homes in Eltham and other suburbs.

This house is part of what many people regard as old Eltham, in the part of the suburb near the famous artists’ colony of Montsalvat. There are no quarter-acre blocks here, just big subdivisions of 4046 square metres or more and roads fringed with native plants and eucalyptus trees. Many of the properties have views over the distant hills. Streets bear the names of people who owned land in the area such as Thomas Sweeney, the first person to buy land in Eltham, or Sir Wilfrid Kent Hughes, a former Menzies government minister and one-time chairman of the organising committee to get the Olympic Games for Melbourne in 1956. Kent Hughes died in 1970 – the year this subdivision was created and his name given to the street. The house at 60 Kent Hughes Road, on about

5060 square metres, is more than a just collection of rooms under a roofline. It is like a country retreat within easy reach of the city and Doncaster. The first thing you notice as you swing into the drive is the apparent absence of fences. Yes, there are boundaries, but the lack of paling fences means that the greenery seems to go on forever. The house appears discreetly behind the greenery at the end of the gravel driveway. It is not a flash house; rather, it is warm and welcoming with a great sense of connection to the outdoors. The single-storey building is reached by going up steps to a verandah that wraps around it on all four sides. Whatever the weather, there is always an area of the verandah that offers a great place to sit and look over the garden. From early-morning coffee to watching the sunset or

eating outdoors, the verandah, which the owners have extended in their 13 years here, is integral to enjoying this house. They have even created their own al fresco dining room at its widest point. The living hub extends over three rooms – the lounge/ dining room, which has an open fireplace to make things cosy in winter. Polished floorboards and heavy timber ceiling beams have the patina of age. Then there is the library that opens to the lounge through double doors. Well-thumbed books fill the bookcases, so that you feel as if you could flop down in one of the comfy chairs. French doors open the library to the north-facing verandah and garden with its brick paving and winding stone paths. The third living zone – the kitchen and meals area –

feels like a real country kitchen: simple cabinets, tiled floor, a big stove and a timber table pushed near the window to ensure there is a view over the garden. Four bedrooms are ranged off a hall leading from the library. The main bedroom has an en suite and walk-in wardrobe, and there is another bathroom and laundry with outdoor access. At the end of the hall a door opens to the west-facing verandah, which is where the owners like to sit in winter to get the last warmth of the afternoon sun. A two-storey guest house or studio built in a sympathetic style is on the far side of the turning circle of the drive. It has its own fenced garden, kitchen/meals area, bathroom, living room, upstairs bedroom or studio and garage. \

Who was it that said spring is the best time to sell? Because nothing matches red clinker bricks quite like the changing colours of old European trees in autumn. Oakdene Place, which loops around like a big circular driveway, is all the more pleasant this time of year when you can practically smell the croissants from the bakery and hear the lazy afternoon jazz from the cafés around the corner. That’s right, East Ivanhoe village is just a few paces away. This house couldn’t be a better fit for an area that is known for its art deco architecture and quiet, understated charm. It is sunken ever so slightly away from the street and has three gables dressed up with bay windows and arched entrance ways.

It has a timber fence painted white and a big shady tree in the front yard. There’s a garden path that slices through patches of lawn big enough to play on. And then there’s the house; a pretty red-brick base with rendered top storey and a front door with charming leadlight panes. Here you get the picture of a larger residence with the convenience of a townhouse. The house sits on a compact and low-maintenance 350-square metre corner block. Out back there is only a courtyard, which, in fairness, is roomy enough for dining outdoors with friends. The floor plan comprises two separate living areas: a front lounge; and family hub with a modern kitchen. There is a guest bedroom and powder room downstairs, and up top, the main bedroom has recently been added to the roof of the double garage. What was the main before is now the ideal parents’ retreat, study or nursery. The Station Road shopping village, with deli and greengrocer, is nearby. \ LIAM CARTER

The interiors are just as delightful. There are two formal reception rooms by the entrance, one with a timber fireplace. The nearby dining room and sunroom face north and are ideal places for eating breakfast or reading in the autumn sun. The kitchen has been beautifully updated with CaesarStone benchtops and Smeg appliances. The island bench is so big it is better described as a continent. The main bedroom, tucked around the other side of the deck, is of more modest proportions but has the sort of Daylesford aesthetic you would pay top dollar for just to spend the night. Like the kitchen, the two downstairs bathrooms are exquisitely finished. There are three bedrooms, a small study and a bathroom up top. \ LIAM CARTER

JELLIS CRAIG, 9490 2900 4 Oakdene Place Price: $1.1 million + Auction: May 14 at noon

Floriston, as the name suggests, is a pretty, undulating road rich in native trees. It runs down towards bustling Eltham-Yarra Glen Road. The residence at No.12 is just far enough away from the traffic to enjoy the peace and quiet but close enough for visitors to locate you with ease. It has two large living areas lined in polished boards and floor-to-ceiling windows. Glass sliding doors off the family hub, fitted with a good-sized kitchen, access the 3.5-metre-wide covered deck. But if you thought this was the only place to sit out and talk to the birds, you’d be wrong. At the base of the 709-square metre block there is an additional deck beside a lily pond and tropical, tank-fed garden that hints of Bali or Thailand. Built in the early 1970s, the house has lost none of its capacity to entertain. Back inside, there are four bedrooms, each a more than decent size, and two renovated bathrooms. There is undercover parking for three cars. The house includes ducted heating and cooling. \ LIAM CARTER

PANTON HILL You can have that dream house on the hill – you know the one with the orchard, the Jacuzzi and the massive wine cellar – without the hard slog of building the place. It was all done for you by the owner-builders of 170a Gosfield Road. Although it may feel more rural than semi-rural in Panton Hill, the shops, amenities and train station in Hurstbridge are only a five-minute (3.4-kilometre) drive away. And don’t forget that Panton Hill has its iconic country pub, primary school, general store and footy club, the Redbacks. There’s a sense of community here you’d be hard pressed to find in any suburb with a fast-food franchise or 24-hour service station. Automatic gates at the end of the long driveway heighten the anticipation upon arrival at this sprawling 7.28-hectare property. And the colonial-style brick residence doesn’t disappoint. A verandah dressed in fretwork introduces a vast family hub complete with parquet floors, fireplace and high ceilings. Big country meals prepared in the Smeg kitchen are best served here or through the double glass doors in the rumpus room, which commands views across the gardens to the hills. The three bedrooms are spacious and served by two bathrooms. While the gardens are adorned in water features, hedge rows and exotic plants, they also have practical features such as a machinery shed, greenhouse, vegie garden and a potting hut. \ LIAM CARTER
