JOANNE SIM jumps in the deep end at an aqua aerobics class run by Ashburton YMCA everyone is at varying fitness levels, the enthusiasm is high.The regulars pick up instructor Mary’s routine’s quickly while Young Mum 2 and I flounder around.The first half of the 45-minute class is cardio with lots of underwater jogging and kicking.Then we are tossed polystyrene dumb-bells for a weight session. Pushing them deep under the water, it’s amazing how their floatation makes them hard to push under and I quickly feel their effects in my arms and shoulders.

The pool is packed with kids in swimming classes and lap swimmers, but for 45 minutes my focus is squarely on Mary and the Abba tunes blasting from her stereo. The following day, my sore calves are a reminder that I was an aquacise virgin, but I got through the class with little trouble and really enjoyed the experience of a work-out without the feeling of dripping with sweat.
