Swinburne staff bans set to bite BY EDDIE MORTON and BRIDGET FITZGERALD SWINBURNE University staff are no closer to a resolution over a new collective agreement, six months after negotiations began, according to the Victorian National Tertiary Education Union. Frustrations boiled over last month when 150 staff members from the Hawthorn campus voted for a series of bans and 10-minute stoppages on May 14. Talks between the union and Swinburne senior management began in October over a new collective agreement, which expired last June. The union described the old agreement as “flawed”. The union is calling for a 7 per cent annual wage increase, up from 4 per cent, and changes to workloads and increased funding
for professional development programs. “The first ban is on the unfair and inappropriate performance-appraisal system at Swinburne,” union assistant secretary Ryan Hsu said. Swinburne University staff will cease online duties and will not respond to inquiries through the student services portal Swinburne Online on May 14. Mr Hsu said the bans had been chosen to have minimal impact on students. Further action was on the cards if union requests were ignored. Swinburne University vicepresident Andrew Smith said the industrial action could be disruptive, but this month’s bans and stoppages would not affect classes. He said the union claims would have a financial impact of more than $30 million on the university.

ISLA Hallam has had a tough start. The Glen Iris three-year-old was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia when she was 17 months old. She spent two years and four months having treatment, including chemotherapy, and has been admitted to the Royal Children’s Hospital more than 20 times.
Isla’s mother, Anne, said their journey had been made easier by cancer charity Camp Quality, which provided support for her elder daughter Chelsea, 6, through its camps and fun days and offered the family special events. ‘‘I didn’t leave Melbourne for well over 12 months after Isla was diagnosed because I was worried
about being too far from medical treatment,’’ Anne said. ‘‘But Camp Quality has medical staff that can help if you have problems, and last year we went on a family camp to Phillip Island. Camp Quality holds its annual Supper Club fund-raiser on May 16. Details: visit supperclub.org.au.
