that open with a gentle push. But don’t expect limousine knee and head room – the space is Commodore sized. The Panamera is a liftback design, with a big glass rear hatch hoisted aloft by powerful struts at the push of a button. This means the cabin is open through to the boot for an airy ambience. The cargo area is relatively shallow but, at 445 litres, is bigger than the usual Porsche luggage space. The biggest differences between the Panamera and traditional Porsches such as the iconic 911 is that the engine is in the front instead of behind the seats, and employs V8 and V6 powerplants instead of the flat six “boxer” design (and soon, a four) of the two-door models. Before anyone leaps to the conclusion that these “V” engines are scrounged from sister company Audi under their mutual ownership by Volkswagen Group, we can tell you they were designed by Porsche, with the petrol V6 effectively the V8 with two cylinders lopped off. When the Panamera received its first major reworking last year, Porsche – with one eye on its environmental credentials and another on performance – introduced a thrifty hybrid model and a twin-turbo V6, with the latter replacing the naturally aspirated 4.8-litre V8 in the mid-range rear-wheel-drive Panamera S and all-wheel-drive 4S. Our test car was the 4S, armed with the blown 3.0-litre V6 that pumps out 309 kilowatts of power – more than the standard V8 – while slicing fuel consumption by 18 per cent for a reasonable return of 8.9 litres per 100 kilometres. The engine achieves peak power at a lofty 6700rpm, but the real action comes from the lusty torque that kicks in fully at just 1750rpm and goes right on churning all the way to 5000rpm. This moves the weighty Panamera along in breezy style, although you will never confuse it for a 911 Turbo. Putting the power to the ground via all four wheels, the 4S is as calm and well-mannered as any car on the road. Floating along on adaptive air suspension that operates either

“the big luxury car for the person who wants sportiness in the Porsche tradition” automatically or manually, the Panamera 4S maintains its composure remarkably well for a vehicle that exceeds five metres in length and two metres in width. While the Panamera’s big German rivals feel bulky at any speed, the Porsche gives the impression of a car one size smaller. However, the road noise coming up through the body is more pronounced than that of the vault-like Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7-Series or Audi A8. The sportiness of the Panamera is enhanced by the slick dual-clutch automatic transmission – called PDK in Porsche land – which makes manual-style gear changes a snap. The driver is faced with a typical Porsche array of instruments and controls, which do the job although without the simplicity of BMW’s concise, stark layout. The Panamera has more buttons than a NASA control centre. At least it has a touch-screen system for audio and sat-nav set up. As you would expect in a car costing more than $300,000, the Panamera has all the driver assistance gear, from adaptive cruise control to reverse parking assistance, along with features such as multi-way electric seat adjustment, high-end audio system and stunning leather-and-chrome trim. Keyless entry is standard but, once inside, the key – in the shape of a Porsche sports car – is required to start the car. In all, the Panamera 4S is the big luxury car for the person who wants sportiness in the Porsche tradition – including all-wheel grip – without V8-style pain at the pump. \ rhammerton@theweeklyreview.com.au

SANDRINGHAM \ 22-24 Green ParadE You wouldn’t really need to go on holiday if you lived at this remarkable property. With pool, large spa and floodlit tennis court – and world-class golf courses nearby – it’s practically a resort. For outdoor dining, there are two decks at ground level and a large balcony upstairs, where you can survey all that you own. And that’s quite a chunk of Sandringham real estate: 1323 square metres, in fact. There’s also a beautiful garden to wander through, leading to the slate verandah that runs halfway around the house. Built of brick with deep eaves on both levels and a double-height entry, the recently renovated house has three living areas including a TV lounge upstairs, and a vast lounge/dining room downstairs, next to more casual living. Both zones open to the covered deck that overlooks the blue-tiled pool with slide. The central kitchen, which opens to a large side deck with tennis-court views, has stone benchtops, island with double sink, Smeg appliances and a butler’s pantry. Four bedrooms are upstairs, including the main retreat with en suite, walk-in wardrobe and balcony with those fabulous views. Green Parade is a walk from Sandringham College and Tjilatjirrin Reserve, home to baseball, cricket and junior soccer clubs. \ TERESA MURPHY

ST KILDA WEST \ 14A Park Street At first glance, this double-fronted house looks like any other terrace. But look a little closer, and you will notice that it doesn’t quite possess the patina of its neighbours. That’s because this property wasn’t built in the late 1800s, but rather a century later. With its grand windows, decorative lacework, high ceilings and sheltered upstairs balcony, the façade uniquely complements the streetscape. Inside, however, the house has included more modern touches such as polished timber floorboards, a neutral colour palette and a contemporary rear. The entry leads to a formal living room, which features a modest fireplace very similar to the ones found during the Victorian era. The kitchen has white cabinetry, glazed splashbacks and stainless steel appliances. It looks out to the family living room, which has a visually arresting conservatory glass backdrop. This architectural feature ensures plenty of light and also invites in views of the private courtyard and tiered decking. The bold geometric shapes continue upstairs with triangular windows and rooflines. The main bedroom has built-in wardrobes and cabinetry. It overlooks the tree-lined streetscape and opens to its own balcony. There are two more bedrooms – one with a Juliet balcony – and a large family-sized bathroom. \ FRANCESCA CARTER

Just a minute’s stroll from the cafés and homewares shops in Armstrong Street, this art deco apartment is bigger than most. Once divided into two apartments, the residence was made whole again many years ago and is now practically a townhouse with its own private courtyard. At the back of a block, its façade features polychromatic brickwork, picture windows and a steeply pitched roofline. The interiors retain the original combination of timber fireplaces, large and elaborate skirting boards, architraves, cornices and art-nouveau ceilings. A dramatic staircase with a timber handrail leads upstairs, where there are three generously sized bedrooms. In the main bedroom, french doors lead to a sheltered balcony that overlooks the surrounding Edwardian rooftops. The back bedroom has exposed beams, revealing the architectural heritage of the building. The L-shaped living room is grand, with chandeliers and soft carpets; french doors open to a leafy, shaded courtyard. Midway between Albert Park Lake and Beaconsfield Parade, this apartment encompasses the best of seaside living. \ FRANCESCA CARTER

Just a block from the hustle and bustle of Fitzroy Street, this terrace house is wider than average. A long hall with polished floorboards and a detailed archway reflects the house’s Victorian heritage. Other references to this style of architecture can be seen in the high ceilings, intricate ceiling roses, cornices and skirting boards. The floor plan is relatively straightforward, with two bedrooms at the front and a living room, kitchen and bathroom at the rear. The main bedroom is spacious and looks out to the tree-lined street. With built-in bookshelves and cabinetry, this room can serve many purposes – formal dining room, relaxed study or a sitting room. The second bedroom, which is similarly generous, has built-in wardrobes and a window to an internal courtyard. This strategically placed courtyard ensures light is filtered through to the main living room, which has a beautiful fireplace. The kitchen has granite benchtops, Bosch appliances and deep cabinetry. It opens to a small courtyard, which has a servery window, ensuring a great place to have outdoor meals. There is also storage in the attic and ducted heating. \ FRANCESCA CARTER

Installing a pool a few years ago was the icing on the cake of this beautifully renovated and extended interwar property, where old and new are seamlessly matched. Gleaming floors, new carpets and plantation shutters throughout add modern glamour to this art deco beauty, where even the air vents are detailed. At front are the formal lounge and dining rooms, with open fireplaces and high, detailed ceilings, main bedroom with walk-in wardrobe and en suite, and three more bedrooms and a bathroom. Open-plan living at the back is a triumph with indoor dining set in a bay of three french doors to sandstone terrace, verdant lawn and formal garden and a blue jewel of a pool with waterfall. A large family lounge area is next to the brilliant white kitchen with stone benchtops, island, Smeg appliances and servery to the outdoors with a bifold window. Cooking must be a pleasure with the soothing sounds of trickling water as an accompaniment. Tightly held Keats Street was once home to former prime minister Bob Hawke, before he entered politics (he moved around the corner to Royal Avenue in 1964). \ TERESA MURPHY

STAR TREATMENT FOR ONE AND ALL AT HOCKINGSTUART From the moment hockingstuart’s highly experienced auctioneer David Wood welcomed novice renovators Steven O´Donnell and Chantelle Ford, not to mention the assembled crowd - to the auction of their property at 1/47 O´Grady Street Albert Park, it was clear that they were in the very best of hands on The Block. But nobody watching on that memorable night had any idea just what an incredible event they were witnessing, or how many records were about to be shattered. About 3.1 million Australians watched as David Wood brought the hammer down on Steve and Chantelle´s stylish and classy property for a record breaking $2.47 million! Ford and O’Donnell - a milliner and a chimneysweep explained that they had never designed a room before appearing on the top-rated program. “We didn’t know - with no background - if anything we did was of value, and now we know it was,” O’Donnell said. “I’m still in shock, I don’t get what’s happened,” Ford said soon after the couple’s win. “We just wanted to sell it.”

And, with our help, sell it they did - the apartment went for $636,000 above the $1.834 million reserve! It goes without saying that we were absolutely thrilled to have been the winning agents on The Block! Not only did we represent Victoria’s first-ever winning couple, we achieved the highest ever sale price in the history of the show. It was also the highest price over the reserve in Block history. A lot of hard work from the contestants and the agents alike paid off superbly. To celebrate the moment, Steve and Chantelle gave each other a big kiss. We´re pleased we could contribute to Steve and Chantelle’s success through the hard work and professionalism of the team at hockingstuart Albert Park. We are also pleased to represent many other outstanding properties in and around Melbourne’s Bayside. And if you’re considering selling your property, contact us today - we’ll treat you like a celebrity.
