t must be all the sugar. How else to explain the visceral and vituperative reaction by so many otherwise mild-mannered citizens to the arrival of October 31, otherwise known as Halloween? I prefer to call it All Hallows’ Eve, and it’s a tradition that I love, but we’ll get to that. That deep and unreconstructed vein of antiAmericanism in Australia that seems to coexist quite knowingly with an equally deep vein of happy pro-Americanism was knotting itself into a DVT of rage on Thursday. On News Breakfast a large number of viewers were not happy that this day was even being mentioned: Halloween was just cheap American commercialism, went the complaints, and had no connection to our culture. Where was the festival of Ned Kelly? And what does begging for lollies have to do with it? So much anger; so many questions. Let’s try to take them in order. First, a history lesson. As anyone with even a little religion in their background will know, the day of remembering those near and dear who have departed for a better place, All Souls’ Day, is a central part of the calendar – the night before All Saints’ Day. Before the idea of one single god came along, this day was simply an article of faith for pagan worship, with feasting and celebration at the end of harvest (hence the pumpkins)

YOU BETTER NOT SHOUT

and before the long, cold winter set in – a time of death. Over many centuries, as these things always go, different elements of celebration and commemoration become combined into the one: hence the tradition of keeping vigil for lost souls becomes combined with harvest festival, which mixes with the ancient English custom of knocking at doors to beg for a shortbread known as “soul cake”, in return for which beggars promise to pray for the dead of the household. And as anyone who has travelled to Latin American countries will know, the Day of the Dead is a big deal and a hell of a festival, and its influence on the American tradition of Halloween is immeasurable. Here is where the party bit comes in. And the skeletons. And the dressing up. Which brings us up to the present day, just add the usual marketing and commercial opportunities that any quasi-religious festival brings. Halloween can also be a really terrific community, neighborhood event where – for once – you see children happily walking the street, often with parents, visiting houses and celebrating their connection to each other with costumes, sweetmeats and the kind of excitement that only children can ever bring to a high holiday. Which only leaves the Ned Kelly festival question begging, and I must admit this culturally purist argument really does bewilder me.

Apart from this country clearly being able to celebrate many different kinds of traditions and festivals at one time, I really don’t understand the resentment of a tradition that hasn’t grown exclusively from the red earth of the Australian desert. Christmas certainly didn’t; nor Easter. And those Christians who came to this country, bringing that tradition with them, would have had an equally strong connection to the All Souls remembrance from which modern-day Halloween has grown. On News Breakfast some were suggesting that we had a greater connection to Guy Fawkes night and that it should be brought back: but how is a failed English assassination plot from 1604 more meaningful than Halloween? In the end it seems to me the anger over Halloween all comes back to an anti-American resentment that many Australians just can’t get past. I’m sure they have their reasons, but to them I say … it’s just a few lollies. And pumpkins. And some truly fascinating human history. \

JANA PITTMAN does everything straight ahead

Cover Story

It was true for her hurdling and running career – she was twice world champion in the 400-metre hurdles – true for her new career as a bobsledder, and certainly true in the way she speaks. You are not left wondering what is in her mind, a trait that has often got her into trouble.

A

fter all the negative press – more on that later – I ask Pittman whether there was a moment when she decided she didn’t care any more about what people thought. “I don’t think I’d say I never care, I’m too sensitive for that,” she says. “A lot of public people get backlash and don’t care, but I wouldn’t want to change the way I am because I like my sensitivity. I’m going into medicine and that will be a good thing to show empathy.” Empathy is something Pittman, 30, clearly has a lot of. Just an hour with her and you’re pretty confident she’ll be a great doctor. A career in athletics, where you’re meant to think only of yourself, is giving way to a career where it’s all about everyone else. That’s exactly how Pittman wants it. We’re talking at the New South Wales Institute of Sport in Sydney, where Pittman is training every day for bobsledding at the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, in February. In an interesting U-turn, she’s switched from athletics to snow sports and will compete in the bobsledding with Astrid Radjenovic. She chose bobsled after first considering boxing and rowing. “Mainly because it still has a running component,” she says. “I love to run. I wouldn’t have done it for 20 years if I didn’t like it.” For bobsledding, Pittman needed to bulk up. “In track and field the goal is to be your minimum body weight, very low skin folds, quite unhealthy really, if I’m being honest. In bobsled you’re encouraged to be as lean but as big as you can be – it’s all about muscle mass. “That’s hard to do clean, as a girl. Boys put on weight really quickly. Us females take a little longer to do it.” The major change in swapping sports was, she says, psychological. “I’ve always been No. 1 in the world. I’ve always been the best at what I do. And transferring to a sport where you’re rubbish, it was a real challenge to not be so hard on yourself and realise you’ve been doing the sport a small amount of time. The realistic chance of Australia winning a gold medal in the Olympics in bobsled is very, very low, whereas every time I stepped on the track in athletics I was there to win. “We don’t expect to win gold. A few sleds would have to crash. You never write it off. I think Astrid and I are very good athletes, but the German girl has been sliding for over 20 years. In Europe you get thrown in a sled when you’re 15, 16 years old. Both Astrid and I are 30. We don’t have the experience. If we come top five we will have done very well.” Pittman met Radjenovic 18 years ago when they were both hurdlers. Radjenovic swapped to bobsled when she was 18, while Pittman stayed in track and field. “She hounded me a few times last year saying, ‘Would you swap over?’,” Pittman says. “I said, ‘Absolutely no chance’. But as soon as I had a go the bug bit, it felt amazing. It’s a brilliant sport.” Pittman is a different person from the days when she was an Australian household name and in the headlines, as much for her off-track controversies as her athletic victories. Being a single mother to six-year-old Cornelis has changed her immeasurably. “For me, he’s very grounding,” she says. “I had a very turbulent career as a young person. I was world champion in athletics when I was 19, so was thrust into the spotlight, no idea how to handle it, spoke too often at times, then didn’t know what was important in life. Then you get a little boy who changes that whole thing for you.” In 2012 she did an entry exam to study medicine. “I remember the day I got the exam results, I can honestly say I was happier than when I won the world champs.”

Back on track Cover Story

PETER WILMOTH meets controversial track star turned medical student and Olympic bobsled contender Jana Pittman

But things haven’t always been so happy. In 2004 she tore artilage in her right knee and underwent surgery in London a week before the Athens Olympics. She ran fifth in the 400-metre hurdles, but her teammate Tamsyn Lewis later said Pittman “loved all the drama”. Pittman responded that Lewis, who had posed for Ralph magazine, was more focused on being a “bikini babe” than running. The rivalry flared again the next year when Pittman accused Lewis of creating a “very evil atmosphere” before the 2006 Commonwealth Games. Pittman says she always hated her drama-queen public image. “I was very young and I don’t think I had a filter, so if someone asked me an honest question I gave them an honest answer. I’m still like that and I wouldn’t change that about me. It still hurts. All I’ve ever wanted to do was represent my country and be a

proud Australian. My whole goal is to help other people, which is why I’ve gone into medicine. I’ve always wanted to be a positive role model for people and it’s difficult to do that if you have somewhat negative things written.” The alleged “catfight” with Lewis saddened Pittman. “It was a very sad story. The only things that ever came out about Tamsyn and I were that we were having some kind of bicker, but the things that don’t come out was that Tamsyn was the very first friend I had in athletics. The first time I ever ran a 400 metres, I was vomiting on the start line and she carried my spikes and drink bottles to the start line, so she cared more about me than anything else and helped me get through the race. “When I did my knee in Athens, she was the one who came all the way to England with me and sat by my side while I had the operation and looked after me

out and win worlds in Osaka in ’07, seven months after having a baby. I look at a lot of people who are quite good at what they do, they can often be a little bit quirky. I am definitely not normal. I’ve got some very quirky sides to me. I’m very spontaneous, I’m very very, very passionate. I can be very single-sighted on things, so if I have a goal in mind I’m very headstrong and driven towards that. My greatest love in life is to help other people, so I will often put my foot in things when I’m trying to help someone else.”

S

he says she doesn’t know why she attracts negative publicity. “I’ve always wanted to know. If I could know I could change it and not have it happen again. Or I could teach my son not to do it … I would love to know what I did wrong so I could help somebody else not to do it.” When injury forced her out of the London Olympics, she became fed up with all the ups and downs of athletics. “It’s a horrible roller-coaster, sport. After Athens I wanted to retire, ‘I’m done, I can’t do this any more. It’s such a roller-coaster – I’ll go and be a doctor’. And then you love it and you go back to it. You stop, you start. With anything worth doing, it’s hard but with sport it’s particularly hard because the Olympics are on every four years. That’s one of the reasons I went to bobsled, because Rio was so long away. When London was over I thought, ‘Wow, I’m not waiting four years, I’ll try to find something in the interim’.” Pittman is the “brakeman” on the team, Radjenovic the pilot. “She’s the real gun on the team,” says Pittman. “I’m very substitutable, she’s not. She has to drive it. She’s the skill, I’m just the big muscle at the back.” Last year Pittman coached athletics at Haileybury College in Keysborough. “It was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever done. It was another reason I wanted to go into medicine – you can lose yourself in an environment where it’s not about you at all, it’s about someone else. And they didn’t know who you were.’’ She is deeply indebted to her parents, who live close to her in Sydney. “I became an athlete because I was obsessed with my dad,” she says. “He’s like me, he’s a workaholic, very little time for anything but work and his kids, and he would always take a day off work to come to carnivals with me. I saw that as way of getting into my dad’s heart so I trained to impress him and then my body was the right shape. “Sometimes I leave at 5am and they get my little man up and give him breakfast, which allows me the time to pick him up from school. When he goes to bed, I go to physio. I couldn’t do it without them.”

“i was thrust into the spotlight and had no idea how to handle it. I didn’t know what was important in life. then you get a little boy who changes everything”

post-operatively. But nothing like that ever got said. I was told to say nothing, to shut up, not to comment in the media … and I think if I had my time over I would have said, ‘Look, she was one of my best friends’. We almost lost our friendship over it. We’re lucky we’re friends again now. What she said as a joke was played out to almost ruin a friendship. “It was something to do with who was going to beat who, said as a jesty joke and it should never have been anything more than that. Both of us got painted in a negative light and none of the beautiful side of Tamsyn came out.” A 2006 cover line in Ralph magazine said: “It’s alright Tam, we don’t like Jana Pittman either.’’ Soon after, Pittman was booed off the stage at a nightclub: “That was hurtful.”

Is she misread? “I think I’ve allowed it to happen … I was the one who answered the questions when I was asked. I was just a little young to understand the repercussions of it.” Pittman is studying first-year medicine at the University of Western Sydney, juggling full-time studies with Olympic training. She hopes to be an obstetrician. “My whole passion in medicine is in obstetrics and babies and delivery.” She started out in midwifery and transferred to medicine. “I’ve always had a real love for children and maternal health, which automatically meant when I had my own son he became very special.” Pittman, divorced from British athlete Chris Rawlinson, talks about her “turbulent” life. “On track it was brilliant. I won five world titles and was undefeated for many years. Among it all I still managed to come

Changing lanes: Jana Pittman at the NSW Institute of Sport where she is training for the 2014 winter Olympics. (MIck TSIkaS)

She’s been reflective and characteristically candid. “I did a lot of media, didn’t have a lot of support in terms of what to not do and say. I think I got caught up in the whole, ‘People don’t like you or people do like you’. I found it really hard to deal with. Then Cornelis comes along and he doesn’t care who you are. He’s far more proud that mummy’s going to be a doctor. “The other day he was asked ‘What does mummy do?’ and you’d think kids who have an Olympian mum would say, ‘Mum’s an Olympian’. He said, ‘My mummy works in a hospital’.” \ pwilmoth@theweeklyreview.com.au We WelCome your feedbaCk @

I have learnt over the years never to underestimate the power of scents; they have the power to tap into memories and evoke fantasies, lust, fear and longing. But for me, what can be more captivating than the smell of the skin of your loved ones? Here is a challenge for you. Instead of following the crowd, why not lead by personalising your scent? This is a great way to express your personality and leave a lasting impression. Tackle the bully: spray your bathroom with two scents you think will work. Shut the door, leave for a few minutes and return. The smell that is overpowering should be excluded in your mixes as it is a scent bully and will overpower any cocktails you come up with. Layer your scent: pick a fragrance group you like and start layering – shower gel/soap /body moisturiser. Know your concentrates: start with the strongest concentration eau de parfum and finish with either an eau de toilette or cologne – the lightest. Never decant several scents into one bottle. Instead, wear different scents all over the body. The heavier scents should be worn on your pulse points – wrists, décolletage, behind your knees and the crook of your arms. The lighter fragrances can be spritzed all over.

customer demographic, changing the product”. Cracking down on anti-social behaviour was top of the to-do list. Carnival introduced closed-circuit TV, security and responsible service of alcohol guidelines, and it began making examples of passengers who behaved badly. “We take people to bed, we stop them drinking, we block their cards, we shut the bars,” says Sherry. “We are very diligent now in managing the environment for the enjoyment of all. If people are really poorly behaved and don’t shift their behaviour, then we disembark them.” Sherry also introduced Australians to new brands – such as the 2667-passenger Carnival Spirit, now based permanently in Sydney Harbour – and promoted the diversity of itineraries available. More choice of destinations, ship sizes and types of cruise. “It was about segmenting the market, getting the right product for the customers, modernising the product,” Sherry says. Australianising it, too. Carnival realised that what floats the boats of its American and British patrons would not work in Australia. Food, drinks and entertainment have all been tailored to the local market. Everything from beer to coffee has a local flavour, and dining features more Asian dishes, grass-fed rather than US-style grain-fed beef, and Luke Mangan-branded restaurants on all P&O ships. “A Luke Mangan restaurant on a ship sends a signal about the sort of product that it is,” Sherry says. Likewise, having food-and-wine cruises where

vignerons showcase local vintages attracts a different demographic to “people who once came on board to drink cheap alcohol. You change the product and that then attracts a different group of passengers”. Another key ingredient in Carnival’s turnaround has been opening new destinations in Australia and regionally. Recent additions to the ports of call include Moreton and Kangaroo islands, Exmouth – gateway to the Ningaloo Reef – Broome and, coming soon, Norfolk Island. Last month, P&O ventured into the wilds of Papua New Guinea, a stark departure from its usual destinations. The Pacific Dawn sailed out of Brisbane for nine-night adventures calling at Alotau, Milne Bay and the Trobriand Islands. A highlight was local communities banding together at Alotau to stage their canoe festival – “an incredible event”, says Sherry – and exotic tribal handicraft markets. Closer to home, in another first, Carnival will bring shiploads of passengers to Melbourne for next year’s Australian Open tennis. P&O routinely brings punters into Port Melbourne each November for the Melbourne Cup, but in January it will have three ships here for the annual grand slam. New experiences, new ships and a new attitude have contributed to cruising’s improved fortunes. “We would not have had the growth if we hadn’t built confidence in the local market,” Sherry says. \ khill@theweeklyreview.com.au » www.carnival.com.au NOVEMBER 6, 2013 \ The weekly review 17

MIDDLE PARK \ 181 Beaconsfield Parade For nearly 150 years, this grand Italianate Victorian has looked over Beaconsfield Parade. Just one of two, it has a historically significant façade that features an asymmetric design with arches, a colonnaded loggia area, bay windows and walls of white-rendered brickwork. With its high ceilings, large interiors and polished floorboards, inside has all the luxury and amenity that current standards require. The formal living room at the front has three large windows. Decorative wall panelling, a marble fireplace and a sparkling chandelier establish a slightly imperial ambience. Originally designed for a wealthy 19th-century family, the house has a huge formal dining room that can seat 12 comfortably. The transition from floorboards to carpet gives this room a warmer feel. The more recently updated kitchen is at the rear and has granite benchtops, white cabinetry and tiled floors. It looks out to the conservatory-style family living room, which features many of the shapes found in the original heritage architecture. The gigantic back garden offers a spa bath, barbecue area and a two-car garage. Upstairs there are four bedrooms and two bathrooms. The main bedroom has built-in wardrobes and an open fireplace. It opens to a private balcony and has spectacular views over the bay. \ FRANCESCA CARTER

The young man who rented a flat in Dickens Street, Elwood, in 1941 liked it so much he did more than buy it … after 16 years as a tenant, he bought all four in the block. He and his wife added two rooms to flat No. 1, where they raised their four children and lived into their 90s. Now Dickens Court, sitting on 810 square metres in a wide street and a prime location, is someone else’s opportunity. The rarity of a block of four on one title gives the buyer possibilities that include interior modernisation or major redevelopment. Immediate re-letting is the easy option, as the flats are beautifully maintained and have had cosmetic improvements yet retain interwar character. The two downstairs flats step out to a large garden with lawns and sunny garden beds, while the two upstairs each have a north-west balcony and front and rear stairs. There are slightly varying configurations of two bedrooms, lounge, dining area, bathroom and laundry space, plus shared garaging for five cars via a rear lane. \ JACQUI HAMMERTON

This spectacular residence designed by Mentone’s Place Architects is in a quiet court next to Landcox Park. A sophisticated exterior combines light render, tiles and a timber feature wall. An enormous pivot-opening front door is a dramatic first contact. American oak floorboards, phenomenally high ceilings and clean, refined architectural lines feature throughout the new house. Commanding much of the ground floor is a spectacular open-plan kitchen and lounge area. The kitchen has a full range of Bosch appliances, including two ovens and a built-in coffee machine. Three teardrop lights are suspended over a floating Caesarstone bench, with a butler’s pantry hidden behind a nondescript door. To one end of the space is a home office; to the other is a separate living room. Outside is an undercover entertainment area and lawn. A first-floor retreat joins three double bedrooms with built-in wardrobes that share a beautifully appointed central bathroom. The luxurious main bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and equally impressive en suite. \ DANIEL McCULLOCH

mal James \ BIG SHIP OF BUYERS FUELLING MARKET MOMENTUM

T

he weekend before last we had the biggest day for $1 million-plus auctions on the Melbourne property market I can remember. With about 250 auctions of more than $1 million in inner-east and bayside, this was some Super-Super Saturday! It wasn’t just about the large number of properties on the market. At times a flood of properties can be a killer for the market, thinning demand so that you end up with lower clearance rates, which discourages would-be vendors from putting their properties on the market in future. But not this time – there was depth in the market even across 250 auctions. Our Bidderman rate was an average of 2.3 bidders per auction – that’s strong. Interestingly, more than half the auctions had two or three bidders, indicating that bidders were spread evenly across the properties on offer, rather than concentrated on a popular few. There were a few that did tip the popularity meter – such as the classic 1960s house at 56a Dendy Street, Brighton, which had eight bidders and sold under the hammer for $2,272,000 (Robin Parker). In South Melbourne, there was a big

crowd and six bidders for the double-storey Victorian terrace at 168 Nelson Road, which sold under the hammer for $2.4 million (Kaine Lanyon). In Hawthorn, there were five bidders for the contemporary house built in 1984 in the highly desirable Scotch Hill precinct at 79 Illawarra Road (James Tostevin). But the story is not just about a small increase in price in the market – the real story is about the huge increase in interest in the overall market. Last year we were on low stock with only about 50 to 70 auctions, and Bidderman was a mere 1.5 bidders per auction. That meant the market was a little putt-putt boat that could be upset by any sign of inclement weather. But right now the market is a big ship. Here’s some basic maths: if you multiply the number of auctions by the number of bidders per auction, early last year that added up to 90 active bidders. As I said – just a little putt-putt boat. This year on the Super Saturday just gone, with about 250 auctions at that million-dollar-plus level in the inner-east and bayside, and Bidderman at 2.3, that means you’ve got 575 active bidders. Does this mean the market last week was five to six times the size it was earlier last year? That may well be (though I’m sure

SOLD $2,272,000 56a Dendy Street, BRIGHTON

there will be readers who take issue with this conclusion). If that is the case then the market has moved from a putt-putt boat to a big ship – and as we know, big ships can take some time to turn around. Another thing is that many of those wanna-be buyers are still out there. Even if you subtract the successful 200 buyers for the properties that sold that weekend or soon after, that still leaves about 380 unsuccessful bidders still wanting to buy a house in Melbourne for $1 million or more – no doubt hoping to do so before the long Christmas break. And that doesn’t count newcomers who have only just now twigged that this is a market on the rise, one they had better get into now before it’s too late. That’s the ingredients for a very

strong property market ahead of us until Christmas. So why is this happening? To a large extent it is a matter of sentiment. For the past five or six years, buyers and sellers have been waiting on the sidelines, thinking either that the market might drop further, or that it was just a matter of time before it took off again. There is also the fact that we are seeing increasing interest from the Chinese community across wider parts of the market – all the way into Caulfield and trickling down to Bayside. So what does this mean for buyers? Strategies! Strategy one: Remember that not all properties are the same in quality, even if they are about the same price. Strategy two: Think strategically with your bidding. In the past eight days we’ve bought 14 properties on behalf of our clients out of 18 for which we have bid. We can’t be that lucky in client selection. The fact is that auctions are more than just having the most money. \ Mal James Principal Buyer Advocate 0408 107 988 \ 9804 3133 We Only Buy Homes www.james.net.au NOVEMBER 6, 2013 \ The weekly review 31

This family house is all about craftsmanship, as you would expect from an postcode owner-builder. Despite the subdivided block, the interior spaces of the elevated, double-storey house are expansive, from the living room, dining zone and kitchen downstairs with their gleaming Tasmanian oak floors, to the upstairs L-shaped balcony with views of treetops and the bay, and the main bedroom with its dressing room and luxurious en suite. There’s another balcony – small and private – off the fourth bedroom, two other bedrooms, a family bathroom and a casual living area opening to the large front balcony. Back downstairs – even the timber staircase is a thing of beauty – the Miele kitchen is a glossy stunner, and serves a courtyard with built-in barbecue. Among the many features of this house are a six-plus star rating, hydronic heating and refrigerated cooling – and great location near the beach, schools, Black Rock shops and golf courses. \ TERESA MURPHY

Three palm trees herald the creamy stucco exterior of this Spanish mission-style block known as Saint Marlo. On ground level, apartment No. 2 has recently been refurbished, with new beige-coloured carpet and cream-coloured walls throughout. Visitors are greeted by the extra-wide double-arched hallway, where high ceilings add to the feeling of space among the grace. At the front is the lounge room, with front verandah views. Here, a new gas fireplace sits within the original cast-iron surround. The light-filled main bedroom overlooks the side garden. The bathroom has white floor and wall tiles with a sea-themed border, plus a corner vanity and shower. The new kitchen has cream cabinetry, laminate benchtops and tiled splashbacks. Set back from the street on a large block, this two-storey art deco house is stunning. Established magnolias against the brick façade make a fantastic first impression. Expansive windows in an east-facing lounge room fill the airy space with sunlight. Alongside a fireplace with incredible green tiles are doors that open to an enormous side garden. Two chandeliers give the adjoining dining room a formal edge. St George appliances and a walk-in pantry feature in the kitchen, which has plenty of bench space. A meals area opens to a courtyard bordered by camellias, with citrus trees espaliered against the side of the house and garage. Nearby, a rumpus room is an additional entertainment area. The first floor is roughly divided into two wings. In the first are two bedrooms with built-in wardrobes that share a retreat, bathroom and rooftop terrace. In the other is a good-sized bedroom, and the main bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe. Also in this zone is an original bathroom in fantastic condition and a nursery with balcony access. \ DANIEL McCULLOCH

It’s up to the buyer, of course, but the upwardly mobile who put up their hands for this Bridge Street gem will have an upper storey uppermost in their minds. Not that its current accommodation, which includes two bedrooms, lounge and kitchen/meals – all renovated in recent years – isn’t delightful. Even its courtyard garden speaks appealingly of lazy, sunny Sunday afternoons. But its position is worth so much more. Snuggled in a row of single-fronted terrace houses, the house sits on a wide, tree-lined street ringed by facilities. Within 15 minutes’ walk you’ll find Bay Street, Gasworks Arts Park, the beach, South Melbourne Market, transport, schools and Albert Park Lake’s recreational smorgasbord. Along with the house on 140 square metres, the buyer gets plans and a permit valid until 2015 to upscale it into a three-bedroom family showpiece. The plans include a living area that spills out to the garden and, above the upstairs main retreat, a sunken rooftop deck designed to catch the sunshine and city views. \ JACQUI HAMMERTON

Almara Cabinets

Linda Black - Vintage Furs

At iSpex we’re all about fabulous glasses. We value good design

and our clientele comes from far and wide.

Almara Cabinets is a family business established in 1995 with several years previous experience in the wardrobe industry. Almara’s core business is the manufacture and fitting of primarily wardrobes, however, they manufacture other products in the line of custom-built wall and entertainment units, desks, cabinets, laundry cupboards, shelving and garage storage. Have an experienced designer come to you, for a no obligation quote. They also deal direct with builders.

Owner Jon Jackson opened Linda Black in Chapel Street in 2002, and it quickly became a popular retail destination for locals and tourists alike. Experienced furriers and licensed second hand dealers, they recycled beautiful high quality fur, well before its’ recent resurgence in popularity. Now situated in the charming 1920’s shopping village of McKinnon Road, McKinnon, we have become Melbourne’s ‘go to’ shop for every aspect of vintage and classic furs.
