Spring racing

puissance de lune’s story is irresistible, writes STEPHEN HOWELL

R

egardless of whether this spring’s hype horse, Puissance De Lune, makes it to the $3 million Cox Plate at Moonee Valley on October 26 and/or the $6 million Melbourne Cup at Flemington on November 5 – let alone wins one or both – the story of the grey import and those involved in his campaign is the stuff of folklore that Victoria’s spring racing carnival throws up each year.

There’s the megarich owner, Gerry Ryan, who bought Puissance De Lune, almost under sufferance, to win a country cup. There’s the extroverted jockey, Glen Boss, who is Melbourne’s reigning champion years after cheating death in a track fall. He went on to win three Melbourne Cups on the great Makybe Diva and two Cox Plates, one on Makybe Diva and the other on So You Think, the star of Melbourne’s spring in 2010, and five-time group 1 winner in Europe. There’s the workaholic country trainer, Darren Weir, who, early in his career, more than once earned the wrath of the stewards (racing’s police) and was suspended and fined, but now sits among Australia’s elite as a group 1 winner and reigning Victorian (statewide) champion. Of course, there’s Puissance De Lune himself, bought for just over $100,000 in France in the year that country won a second straight Melbourne Cup and at a time when Australians were (and still are) paying well into seven figures for animals less talented. With all that comes the surf and turf aspect, with Puissance De Lune being trained away from the madding crowd of horses at Weir’s busy Ballarat stables, at a satellite yard in Warrnambool, where he does his main work on the beach, among the dunes and in the water at Lady Bay. And there is the patient defeat of injury, that constant adversary of trainers and owners everywhere. In this case it was confronted swiftly with arthroscopic surgery on fetlock bone chips, and patiently with measured and confined rehab on a treadmill at Ballarat and then in the freedom of sand and water at Warrnambool. The story, too, will not end with running in the plate and/or the Cup. For it is to future springs, as well as this one, that the entrepreneurial Ryan is looking – to the breeding barn, in fact, where he already has his 2010 Melbourne Cup winner Americain standing. (Americain, owned with wife Val and another Melbourne couple, Kevin and Colleen Bamford, and trained by Frenchman Alain de Royer-Dupré at Chantilly, was the first of the successive French winners, with Dunaden in 2011 the other.) That Ryan already has a 3200-metre stallion is the reason for dual targets, with the emphasis at this stage on the shorter race, the 2040-metre Cox Plate. The 62-year-old owner of the caravan maker Jayco and a raft of other businesses, explains: “He’s still got his nuts and he’s got the potential for stud. If we get a group 1 win (at 1600-2000 metres) it just helps his profile as a stallion.” That profile already is impressive, with Puissance De Lune described as extraordinarily well bred, being by Shamardal (United States), one of the best stallions in the world, from a mare whose dam (Serena’s Sister) is a sister to the great American race mare Serena’s Song, who had 11 group 1 wins among her 18 successes in the mid-1990s. Ryan, an investor in the breeding game as well as in racing, has Americain as a shuttler already, covering mares at Swettenham Stud, Nagambie, in the Victorian spring and at the famous Calumet Farm in Kentucky in the US season. He rates Americain the best horse he has owned, but of this spring’s boom runner he says: “This is the second-best with the potential to do better.” Initially, Ryan didn’t want Puissance De Lune, a winner of one of four starts in France. He says: “Rob [Roulston, bloodstock agent and now chairman of Racing Victoria] rang me up and said, ‘I’ve got another horse for you’. I said, ‘I’ve got enough horses’.”

$60 million; his investments in wine (the Mitchelton winery), in the worldwide puppetry success story Walking with Dinosaurs and in the new stage show King Kong; and his other sporting involvements, from AFL (St Kilda) to the NRL (Melbourne Storm) to basketball (the national women’s team, the Opals – one of the world’s best). Ryan’s racing manager, Deane Lester, says that his boss had probably 100 racehorses, with up to 25 in work with several trainers, particularly Weir, Robbie Griffiths and Robert Kingston. He also has a large team of broodmares on his 220-hectare Limerick Lane Stud, and part-owns another stallion, the miler Dash For Cash, at Swettenham Stud, just across the Goulburn River. Hard work and perseverance have made Ryan a rich man, but there have been hurdles. “I sold out [of horses] in the recession going back in the late ’80s,” he says. “I was flyblown like the rest and the horses had to go. I didn’t have horses for, you know, another five or six years …”

H stuff of legend \ Stable foreman Mitch Freedman rides Melbourne Cup favourite Puissance De Lune during an early morning workout at Warrnambool.

Then Ryan asked Roulston, “Could it win a Bendigo Cup?” As Puissance De Lune was going to the barrier for the P.B. Lawrence Stakes at Caulfield on August 17 – his first-up win over 1400 metres this campaign, which fuelled even more hype on the grey – Ryan recalls: “I went up there [Bendigo] a few years back with three horses and didn’t do any good and the next day in the paper they bagged me, ‘No luck for Jayco supremo’ … “Anyway, I said, ‘We’ve got to get a Bendigo Cup horse, because I grew up in Bendigo, selling newspapers’.” Jayco, which has almost 50 per cent of the Australian caravan market, has sponsored the race since 2009. Ryan says he realised during the build-up to Bendigo late last year that Puissance De Lune was more than he had bargained for when Roulston bid €90,000 at Deauville in 2011, a figure that was then worth about $A120,000. “Then, after the Bendigo Cup [which it won by eight lengths], we said, ‘Well, we might have a Melbourne Cup runner’.” Just 10 days later, after a five-length romp in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600 metres) on the final day of the Flemington carnival, Boss couldn’t hold in his enthusiasm and said it would win the Cup. Now, after the Lawrence win and a strong second in the group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600 metres) at Flemington three weeks later, he is Melbourne Cup favourite and high in the betting for the Cox Plate. And Ryan is loving the ride, which is saying something considering his other action-packed interests, such as: his recent Tour de France successes with the Orica-GreenEDGE cycle team, which he set up and has bankrolled for a reported

ow does he treat his racing and breeding interests? “With the number of broodmares, it is a business. All the businesses I’m in, it’s about fun – caravans, show business, wine and horses are fun. That’s what I enjoy, and the people side.” Trainer Darren Weir describes Ryan as “the best owner” with a “that’s what I pay you to do” attitude. “Every now and then he just says, ‘I’d like to, if we could, head to this race’. He said [with Puissance De Lune], ‘Head towards the Cox Plate, if it doesn’t work out, change the route on the way and go to the Melbourne Cup’.” Jockey Glen Boss, who admits to being the “Minister for Rash Statements”, seems to think the Plate and/or the Cup are the horse’s to lose. Ryan, responding to a comment that he wasn’t of the Boss school of hype, says: “You’ve got one extreme, you’ve got the trainer who doesn’t tell you too much; and Bossy’s the other way. “The trainer knows not to tell me too much. I get very excited very easily, but very disappointed [laughter] … I leave it to them.” Weir, who fulfilled his part of the Puissance De Lune deal with the Bendigo Cup win last November, would love to win the greatest race of all this November, having finished second to Boss’ darling, Makybe Diva, with the unheralded stayer She’s Archie in 2003. His young foreman at Warrnambool, Mitch Freedman, has been entrusted with the day-to-day work with now six-year-old Puissance De Lune, whose switch from Ballarat to the beach not long after Weir took him over came because, as a bull, he became loud and excited and wouldn’t settle at the trainer’s busy stables. Furthermore, the beach, the dunes and the salt water are comforting training tools. The trainer also listens to Boss, as the man with race and trial responsibility; and to Lester as Ryan’s racing manager; as well as to Ryan, who pays the bills and has always had half a dozen horses with him over the past 10 or dozen years. Weir doesn’t see Ryan’s Cox Plate goal as secondary to his own Cup ambition, rather as the first of two tough and lofty targets that depend on lead-in results. “The plan is to do both, but Gerry’s a realist,” he says. \ editorial@theweeklyreview.com.au We Welcome your feedback @

Grey matters \ every crowd has a silver shining

G

reys make up only about 3 per cent of the world’s thoroughbred racehorse population, but they are among the most popular with racegoers: the British had the great and much-loved jumper Desert Orchid; the Americans had their champion Native Dancer; and Australia has had a succession of favourites that include the gregarious Gunsynd and the Melbourne Cup hero and racing ambassador Subzero. Toryboy, in 1865, was the first grey to win the Melbourne Cup, four years after the bay Archer won the first cup. Only another five greys have won since: Hiraji 1947, Baghad Note 1970, Silver Knight 1971, Subzero 1992 and Efficient 2007. Six wins in 152 cups suggests, on pure figures, that the odds are long that this year’s early favourite, Puissance De Lune, can make it No. 7. Fortunately, “pure figures” don’t determine the cup winner so there is no need to put a line through this grey simply because of his colour. Many who were at Flemington on the final day of the Victoria Racing Club’s 2012 carnival and saw him win the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2500 metres) – the race Makybe Diva won before she won her first of three Cups – believe Puissance De Lune can win, not the least jockey Glen Boss who “declared him” 12 months out. If he does win, he is sure to be more popular than your run-of-the-mill bay with small punters, on looks and on point of difference/novelty – bays (brown with a dark, almost black mane and lower legs) have won 67 Melbourne Cups, nearly double the browns (darker than bay and can be almost black) with 36 and chestnuts 34.

Greys usually start out dark with a dapple effect and whiten with age. The British racing body Weatherbys states: “The body coat (of a grey) is a mixture of black and white hairs, with the skin black. With increasing age, the coat grows lighter in color.” Efficient, the most recent grey Cup winner, was a gun-metal shade when he won the 2006 Victoria Derby, just a touch lighter when he won the Cup the year later, and whitening (dark mane aside) when he had his last race, as a nine-year-old in early spring last year. He is now kicking up his heels in retirement with other turf stars at Living Legends near Melbourne Airport. But the most-loved grey Melbourne Cup winner, by a longshot, is Subzero, who became even more famous in retirement from racing, first as a clerk of the course’s horse (which traditionally are grey) and then as an “ambassador and educator”, with his “best mate” Graham Salisbury, a clerk of the course who has guided him through these late stages of his career. “Subbie” visits schools and old people’s homes as part of a Racing Victoria program, and has been the star of functions throughout much of Australia and in Dubai, Hong Kong and Singapore. He loves his work and Salisbury has cared for him so well that, despite some serious health problems, he is still soldiering on, aged 25. Ming Dynasty, trained by the legend Bart Cummings, is one of six greys to win the spring’s other great handicap race, the Caulfield Cup (1977 and 1980). Gunsynd, originally from

Queensland and a star of the early 1970s, is one of three Cox Plate winners. He was known as the Goondiwindi Grey. Country singer Tex Morton sang of Gunsynd, loved for his “personality” as well as his wins: “We’ve cheered him from the grandstand And we’ve cheered him from the flat We’ve cheered a little beauty A real aristocrat He’s never thrown the towel in Been a trier all the way A horse we’re really proud of The Goondiwindi Grey.” Each Oaks Day since 1996 at Flemington the big crowd has cheered lesser greys in an all-greys race, a 1400-metre handicap that is part of the support card to the Crown Oaks, the classic for three-year-old fillies. “The Oaks Day all-greys race was the brainchild of VRC committee member Doug Reid,” said VRC racing manager James Earls. “Greys’ races had been held at Flemington (at a July midweek meeting) prior to 1996, and also had been run in Sydney. “Putting one of these races on in the Melbourne Cup carnival was a bold initiative; one that’s been very successful.” Reid retired from the committee after 28 years, in 2006. Lady Josephine was the 1996 winner. She was trained by Cranbourne’s Robbie Griffiths, who also prepared the 2011 winner Dash For Viz.

GREY MELBOURNE CUP WINNERS 2007 \ Efficient ($17 or 16/1) 1992 \ Subzero (4/1) 1971 \ Silver Knight (10/1)

Last year the Rosehill mare Arinosa came to Flemington especially for the $100,000 race, premier Sydney trainer Chris Waller, telling the media after the win: “You don’t have to be the best horse in Australia. “She probably doesn’t have the class just yet to be down here competing in the better quality races, but this is a great concept that allows owners to be involved in the carnival. It is the pinnacle if you have a grey horse.” Echuca trainer Gwenda Johnstone is another who enjoys coming to Melbourne for a grey slice of the spring pie. She prepared the 2003 and 2004 winners Shadowmaker and Shadowpark, both from the grey mare Be My Pride (at least one of the sire and dam must be a grey for a foal to be grey). In 2006 Theresnothinglycra (from the grey Lofty Place) gave Johnstone her third winner. “There’s nothing like winning in the spring,” she said. “You’ve got all your owners with you and it’s just awesome. But it’s constant hard work and you’ve got to have a horse that’s got the ability to go down.” \ STEPHEN HOWELL editorial@theweeklyreview.com.au

royalty \ tony bourke has spent a lifetime beating the perils of the punt

S

ince I left The Age at the end of 2008, the hardest thing has been to convince people that I have not retired. Sure, I was there for 42 years (good grief – how time flies) and had zoomed into the upper reaches of my 60s, but I had at no time seriously contemplated giving up “work’’ – if being involved in horse racing can be considered as gainful employment. It was really my accountant who convinced me that voluntary redundancy with its large financial “package’’ was the way to go. “You may not get such a good result later on,’’ were his ominous words. Of course accountants are, one hopes, naturally cautious, but any suggestion of a “good result’’ is almost irresistible to anyone with a punting bone in their body. Anyway, my response to the inquiries about my “retirement’’ became almost clichéd: “Working in horse racing is like working at your hobby” and “I don’t do gardening”, so I wasted no time in setting up a small company, All Things Racing, with the idea of offering my services as a freelance writer or adviser to anyone wanting to take advantage of my experience. I had gained my grounding in racing by working on the famed Truth form guide in the late 1950s. For those who can

remember, anyone caught reading the Truth, with its lurid headlines and sexy pictures, “only bought it for the form guide’’ – that became a standing joke. But, it was usually true because with its six to eight runs per horse, it was the best form guide available and it was put together by hand because it was still about 30 years before computers. It was little more than a sweatshop indexing all the race meetings (thankfully, not as many as now) but it was a fantastic experience, and the Truth did over the years produce some of the best racing writers and tipsters of the era. Enough of the past. Keeping up with all the racing today is nothing less than a nightmare and, if you manage to “do the form’’ properly for more than two or three meetings a week, you deserve a medal. As far as writing about racing was concerned, I came through a school of hardened professionals including Tony Kennedy, Jack Elliott, Ron Taylor, Jack McPherson, Rollo Roylance, Bill Casey, Keith Robbins, Bert Lillye and Bill Whittaker but, as a matter of necessity and computer skills, it is a different business today. At The Age I was fortunate to have Les Carlyon, one of the great Australian writers of any period, as editor for a short time after the sudden death of Graeme Perkin. The Age tended to have senior executives who regarded racing as a necessary hindrance. But Carlyon, if not a punter, is a lover of the thoroughbred and the characters involved in racing and the romance of the turf. It was Carlyon who sent me for the 1976 Epsom Derby (my first overseas trip) and, as it turned out, asked me if I wanted

to also cover Wimbledon, an offer I could hardly refuse, although I knew very little about tennis. In the lead-up to Wimbledon, I went to various tournaments and naturally became an instant expert. In Nottingham I saw Romanian Ilie Nastase play John Newcombe in an exhibition match and declared him a freakish performer, certain to win at Wimbledon, although my enthusiasm was not supported by the far wiser heads on the tennis tour. As I scoured the betting shops to secure the best odds (about 7/1) on Nastase, the general feeling was that his fiery temperament would be his downfall in the two weeks at Wimbledon. Nastase swept through the early rounds and I could hardly contain myself from going the “early crow’’ for being so smart, despite the warnings that I should be thinking about “laying off’’ my bets, particularly because in the final he was playing, at that time, a virtual unknown in Björn Borg. Nastase started 6/4 on favourite and was swept aside in straight sets by Borg in the first of his five successive Wimbledon titles. So much for my career in tennis – I’ve stuck to horse racing since. Incidentally, my first experience of English racing at Epsom was an eye-opener in terms of the contours of the track, where one of the world’s most famous races is run. Any horse should be forgiven for not handling Epsom, which has a up-hill-and-down-dale nature, but equally some of the great horses who have won at Epsom deserve every accolade. The carnival atmosphere of Epsom is in contrast to the

pomp and pageantry of Royal Ascot. You don’t have to don the top hat and tails but the atmosphere lends itself to joining the traditions that go back 250 years. Even those with republican leanings will take the opportunity of watching the Queen and her entourage come up the long straight on each of the five days at Ascot. Earlier this year, properly attired I believed, I was in the parade ring after the Queen’s horse Estimate won the Gold Cup – making her the first reigning monarch to have success in the race in 207 years. After the presentation, the Queen left the dais and was almost lost in the crowd – a path was cleared so she could get a glimpse of a horse she had running in the next race as it paraded around the ring. For a few moments, I was opposite Her Majesty, only about five metres away, and she appeared to have a stern frown on her face. At that moment, a senior official brushed past me and just flicked my top hat and I realised that I should have removed the hat, which I did immediately, suitably chastened in her presence. The traditions can sometimes be confusing. There is plenty to enjoy in most of the other great racing venues in Hong Kong, Japan, France and Dubai, but the races in Vienna are something else. Held in a beautiful public park, amid other public activities on a track about the size of an AFL oval, the feature race was for unraced Arab stallions ridden by amateur jockeys. They had tote betting, provided by the local casino, for those desperate for a bet. Trying to get some idea of the fitness or otherwise of the runners was fraught with danger because the parade ring was in the shade of large oak trees and you had to avoid being hit by falling acorns. So much for the perils of the punt, but I couldn’t imagine it any other way. \ editorial@theweeklyreview.com.au

B

eing the most glamorous girl at the gallops requires as much preparation as any trainer with their sights set on winning a group 1 race. For entrants of the fashion competitions at Flemington and Caulfield, the moment of judging is the climax of months of preparation – first choosing a theme, then engaging a milliner and dressmaker, and finally selecting the optimal accessories. Flemington’s Myer Fashions on the Field and Caulfield’s Chadstone-backed equivalent are Australia’s richest and most prestigious style titles. From cigarettes, hosiery and chocolates in the early days to a modern prize purse of luxury cars, overseas holidays, dazzling jewellery and shopping sprees, Fashions on the Field booty now tops $400,000. Over its 50-year history at Flemington, shop assistants to lawyers, students and emerging models have won Fashions on the Field in everything from home-sewn ensembles to European designer garb and locally tailored couture. To stand out among thousands of well-heeled women and drive home in a Lexus convertible (to which the national winner at Flemington is treated), a military-style level of planning is essential. Fashion competition judges – editors, socialites, milliners and designers – emphasise individuality and the old-school pillars of deportment, such as grooming and poise. Judges even consider an outfit’s weather appropriateness as part of the criteria. A vaporous silk frock on a stormy afternoon at the track, for example, will certainly spell elimination. Serious entrants are known to prepare up to three outfits – one for a sunny day, one for a cold snap and another vintage, in case the mood strikes – for the major spring carnival days. The yearly investment can run into the tens of thousands of dollars for the so-called serial contestants, for whom the competition is their racing raison d’être and more than just a casual hobby. Fashion journalist and former style scribe for The Age, Janice Breen Burns, has judged at Flemington for more than 30 years and at Caulfield since the mid-1990s. Breen Burns says all winners have shared a fastidiousness, from hats down to heels. “There are so many contestants who are paying attention to grooming that you notice the slightest scuff on a shoe or a wrinkle in a hemline,” she says. Fifties glamour, such as full skirts with nipped-in waists, has been the dominant racewear silhouette over the past decade, Breen Burns observes. However, she says more entrants are now opting for a modern spin, such as a ’60s neon shift with a collectible Chanel plastic jacket. “I honestly don’t think in the 30-odd years I have been judging that the genuinely best-dressed woman has won, because there are so many different opinions – it is so subjective,” she says. Flemington Fashions on the Field judge and former design winner David Medwin, whose couture clients at his Toorak salon include prominent horse owners, says his eye is captured by a contestant who blends spring’s trends with tradition. A structured hat and not a flimsy fascinator is another must in Medwin’s rule book. “If the person who is entering has started with an unusual or smart colour from what is happening in Europe, I look for that first,” he says. “I think that things can be fashionable but not to be in the extreme, not to be outrageous and stray into costumery. The fine line is there. “I am very much for hats. I don’t mind if they are big or small hats, I am just not very keen on a bit of feathers stuck behind the ear.” Designer Jenny Bannister, an adjudicator at Caulfield and a long-time Flemington racegoer, declares “table-top dancing shoes” and “cocktail hour” dresses are unforgivable faux pas. For Bannister, tailored, knee-length frocks with covered shoulders are more on the money. “Think elegance and get some role models in place, like Grace Kelly or Audrey Hepburn, and have a theme – it’s a great way to stay on track,” Bannister says. “When entrants are not 18 and not a model, I like to see them in a dress coat and a really good hat that works with the clothing. “You can add a bit of chrome or brass on the shoes so then it is modern but not disco.” \ Emily powEr epower@theweeklyreview.com.au OCTOBER 9, 2013 \ The weekly review 17

Billecart-Salmon Brut Reserve NV

(Champagne) $199; 12 per cent ★★★★★

(Champagne) $108; 12 per cent ★★★★★

From a single vineyard in the grand-cru town of Cramant; it’s made from chardonnay only, with lower pressure inside the bottle to create a creamy texture and retain fruit purity. There’s wonderful complexity and intensity to the stone fruit, lemon and mineral flavours, while crispy, refreshing acid powers the finish.

One of the best non-vintage champagnes around, this is packed with cherry, fennel seed, stonefruit, spice, buttery almond biscuit and grapefruit. It’s a Champagne of real composure that’s gentle in the mouth, but builds in intensity – restrained power – with lemon acid, grip and a depth of flavour that continues well past the last sip.

Doyard Oeil De Perdrix grand cru rosé 2007

(Champagne) $110; 12.5 per cent ★★★★★

Veuve Fourny & Fils Grande Reserve premier cru Champagne (Champagne) $65; 12 per cent ★★★★★

From a small family-run producer whose wines are imported by De Bortoli. Complex apple – red and green – scotch finger biscuit, lemon zest flavours are concentrated and fresh. Its intensity and balance are really impressive. Zippy and fresh, there’s a roundness that you only get in good Champagne. Dry and slightly grippy, it finishes with some length.

Louis Roederer Cristal 2005

(Champagne) $110; 12 per cent ★★★★★

A 60/40 blend of pinot noir and chardonnay – Pol Roger’s traditional blend – from 20 grand and premier-cru vineyards. Layered, complex aromas of green apple, red cherry, strawberry, lemon and lime are incredibly fresh and pure. There’s drive and restraint to the citrus and mineral flavours, a creamy mousse and fabulous focus, especially on the back palate that spreads to a long finish.

(Champagne) $360; 12 per cent ★★★★★

Oeil De Perdrix, meaning eye of the partridge, is a 75/25 blend of pinot noir and chardonnay from grand-cru vineyards with a golden colour and just a touch of pink. The pinot is dominant with strawberry and cherry, plus honey, nuts, orange zest, vanilla and biscuit. It’s elegant, has subdued intensity, and red cherry notes flowing through the wine. With zippy, focused acid and a light grip, it’s a joy to drink. G6069850AA-a19Jun©FCNVIC

The Champagne of hip-hop stars. It’s a powerhouse, with some subtlety to the flavours of grilled nuts and buttered brioche that lay under a bed of macerated berries, pink ladies, saline and a shaving of lemon zest. There’s a real focus to the chalky, lemon-flavoured acid. A little smoky, too, on the lengthy finish, which adds an extra layer of complexity rather than any sort of distraction.

Blue Pyrenees Midnight Cuvée 2009

Sporting a serious new label, this is a blend of pinot noir, chardonnay and pinot meunier. Aromas of red apple, lemon, brioche and a touch of honey have nice complexity. Intense lemon, Granny Smith apple and biscuit flavours have a driving line of refreshing acid and a finish that’s reminiscent of mineral water with a squeeze of lemon.

One hundred per cent chardonnay, the Midnight Cuvée is picked at night, hence the name, to preserve freshness in the grapes. Complex peach, cantaloupe, citrus and blossom – all classic chardonnay aromas – along with buttery biscuit notes, lead to a smooth, creamy mousse and intense lemon and stonefruit flavours.

Krug 2000

(Champagne) $495; 12 per cent ★★★★★ The wine in the distinctive bottle – it can’t be disguised in a blind tasting – tastes like a croissant spread with lemon curd, but there’s much, much more to this. There’s a wave of complexity through the mouth with oxidative, buttery brioche, nutty notes, mixed with powerful lemon-zest freshness. Beautifully smooth, the mousse is like liquid velvet. It’s seamless.

(Mornington Peninsula) $30; 11.5 per cent ★★★★

Pierre Peters Cuvée de Reserve NV (Champagne) $70; 12 per cent ★★★★★

One hundred per cent grand-cru chardonnay from Le Mesnil sur Oger and a long-time favourite in our household. You can smell chalky soils in this, along with sweaty, zesty lemon, white peach and minerality in spades. With a low dosage, this is bone-dry, grippy and refreshing, with a wave of flavour on the finish. \

(Pyrenees) $32; 12.5 per cent ★★★★

Stonier shares the same owner as Bollinger. This sparkling is a blend of 85 per cent chardonnay with pinot noir. Peaches, buttery biscuits, seaspray, lemon zest and juice smell great and taste better. This is super creamy, with a delightful balance and a flow of flavour that builds and builds along the tongue to burst out at the finish.

From a single vineyard in the Coal River Valley, this complex sparkling has creamy strawberry and raspberry, lemon zest, biscuit and aniseed spice aromas. It’s loaded with lemon, followed by red berry, cherry and Granny Smith apple. It’s creamy, with a lovely mousse and mouthfeel, a chalky grip and a bright line of acid. \

SpRING RAcING

ARRIVING IN STYLE \ the tradition

T

horoughbred racing is the sport of the rich and famous, but arriving at the racecourse in A-list fashion is not just for the privileged few. Sashaying on course after a swish trip in a boat or helicopter goes hand-in-hand with popping champagne corks and stepping out in your best designer dress. When Princess Diana and Prince Charles visited Flemington on Melbourne Cup day in 1985, they meandered up the Maribyrnong River by ferry. Their arrival by boat was mostly for security reasons, but caused a stir among the crowd, who were there to catch a glimpse of Diana and her impeccable outfit as much as to cheer home Cup winner What A Nuisance. Today, many punters putter to the Melbourne Cup carnival along the river from the city to avoid lengthy traffic snarls and safely indulge in a few glasses of bubbly. Melbourne River Cruises run seven boats on carnival days, with the exception of the final day of the carnival, Stakes Day, transferring punters from Southbank to Flemington. Some vessels dock for the day as floating marquee, with guests able to come and go as they please between the racecourse and the boat. But helicopter is the transport à la mode for the biggest celebrities visiting the track during cup week. Texan actress and supermodel Jerry Hall and her daughter, Georgia May Jagger, who judged Myer Fashions on the Field in 2010, and music superstar Liza Minnelli, who partied at the track in 2009, are among the glittering

decked out \ Stylish Nicole Wattie sails in. (JaSoN South)

stars who have opted for the seven-minute chopper ride to Flemington from the CBD. For celebrities, a helicopter journey avoids prying eyes but, at $410 return for Oaks or Stakes days ($480 on Cup and Derby days), any punter can be a high flier. Heli-Serv has the exclusive contract to operate helicopters to and from Flemington during the Cup carnival, and counts everyday racegoers among their passengers, as well as the cream of Birdcage celebrities.

The trip takes in the city skyline and the colour and buzz of 100,000 punters partying at the track below, and beats the battle for a seat on a crowded train. Vitamin giant Swisse, which has hosted celebrities such as Sex And The City star Kim Cattrall and Hollywood actress Nicole Kidman at Flemington, is one of the corporates that prefers to delivers its guests to the track by chauffeured car. Former Miss Universe Jennifer Hawkins – a regular racegoer as the face of retail giant Myer – also elects for a limousine. Uber Melbourne, a car-hire service that launched in Melbourne in January, has a fleet of well-dressed drivers in luxury cars on standby. “Our goal is to be a classy and reliable alternative to taxis and spring racing is when people are looking for that,” Uber’s spokesman David Rohrsheim said. Bookings for an Uber car, which costs about 30-40 per cent more than a regular taxi, are done by app and charged to an account, so no money changes hands in the car. But not every racegoer of wealth and status opts for fancy transport. The Japanese owners of Delta Blues, after winning the Cup in 2006, were advised that the train would be the quickest way to the after-party at the Flower Drum restaurant. The Cup trophy, worth $125,000, left the track in a limo, but three of the part-owners boarded a train bound for Flinders Street, and rubbed shoulders with everyday passengers, who were thrilled to share in their excitement. \ Emily PowEr epower@theweeklyreview.com.au

IRONIC ICONIC \ RACHEL BERGER RAisEs somE towERinG issuEs in Victoria in 1876 (merged with National Mutual Life in 1983), expanding their offices through Australia and New Zealand in the 1920s and 1930s. Given that insurance is a form of risk management, knowing the building’s original tenants only reinforces my fear and loathing around towers, even when they’re ornamental. Described as “Melbourne’s most beautiful building” in a competition run by The Herald in 1930, it’s a potent reminder of the strength of Australian commerce during this period. Interestingly, almost all the T&G buildings around the country had the same distinctive characteristics – multistoreyed, on corner sites and with a tower; an early example of corporate branding. Originally the building had two towers rising to about 60 metres. In 1938 A&K Henderson extended the building, removing one of the towers and increasing the size of the other; the building occupied 56,635 cubic metres of space. Using mostly Australian materials in the construction, the building was finished in Harcourt granite on the ground floor, and the Collins and Russell streets entrances were panelled in Victorian Buchan marble and New South Wales Caleula marble. In the early 1990s, the upper floors were gutted when architects Metier3 incorporated the structure into KPMG House, resulting in the largest façade retention project in the southern hemisphere. Many of the original features were retained, such as Napier Waller’s 1928 significance-laden mural, titled Better Than to Squander Life’s Gifts is to Conserve Them and Ensure a Fearless Future. \ boomboom@rachelberger.com Follow Rachel on Twitter @boom_berger

T

owers give me the heebie-jeebies; nothing good ever happens in or around towers. Remember Rapunzel’s code for access to her tower? “Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair.” A PIN would have been safer. When the witch (her captor) discovered Rapunzel’s betrayal (for a prince, naturally) she not only threw the girl from the window of the tower but cut her hair off too. Remember Quasimodo and his gig in the bell tower with no OH&S equipment to protect his back? Oh and let’s not forget Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII’s second wife beheaded for treason, witchcraft and incest in 1536 in the Tower of London. Historically towers could be good for defence – platforms from which a defending army could hurl spears, stones and abuse. Or they could be good for offensives and sieges – raised platforms for attackers to hurl themselves over high city walls. Towers were also a feature of the churches and cathedrals built during the Romanesque and Gothic periods, possibly based on the notion that the higher the tower, the closer to God. Look up when you’re on the crest of the Collins Street hill in Russell Street and you’ll see one of Melbourne’s landmark towers at the top of the T&G Building; once affectionately called the Tooth & Gum building because it was populated by an amalgam of dentists. Designed by Anketell & Kingsley Henderson and built in stages (1929, 1938 and 1959), the building became the largest and most prominent interwar office block in Melbourne. The T&G Mutual Life Assurance Society was an insurance company (Temperance & General) founded

IllaWarra Designed by James Birtwhistle for prominent land-boom giant Charles Henry James (1848-1898) and constructed in 1889-91 by builder CB Leith, this lavish two-storey Toorak mansion is a testament to high risk. James was one of the most flamboyant of the land-boomers of the 1880s. Starting out as a North Melbourne grocer, he made bucketloads of money through land speculation. It was said he built the tower to see his land in St Albans! Illawarra reflects James’ nouveau-riche desire to spend money conspicuously, like many of his land-boom contemporaries. He was a banker, entrepreneur, grazier and MLC before the boom turned to bust. \

coop’s sHot toWer What a brilliant idea to enclose this, one of only five shot towers built in Australia, in the 77-metre tall cone of the Melbourne Central shopping complex. Among the window displays and credit-card terminals it stands tall, a gritty reminder of the city’s early history. Designed for the production of shot balls (molten lead was poured through a sieve then dropped into water for use in firearms), the structure erected in 1889-90 is a two-storey, three-bay-brick structure dominated by the 50-metre high tower. It was in use until 1960 and most of the shot-making equipment still exists. \

croquemboucHe This tower holds unprecedented devastation within its sticky walls; if you see a Croquembouche, walk away. Think of it like a lighthouse beacon warning you to keep away from the choux pastry rocks or you’ll find yourself entangled in threads of caramel fighting for your waistline in the rough seas of Grand Marnier-flavoured custard. This tower of evil was allegedly invented by French pastry chef Antoine Carême (1783-1833) in the late 1700s and became popular as a wedding cake. Your quest, should you be brave or stupid enough to enter this tower, is to break through the shards of glaze and conquer the profiteroles. I recommend a heavy knife or a sword. \

BACK AT THE BOX OFFICE developing our city \ There’s life in the George Cinema yet, writes Jo Davy

A

lmost 20 years have passed since St Kilda’s George Cinema opened with sold-out screenings of Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction. Local filmmaker Gus Berger says the 1994 cult classic was perfect for the St Kilda audience, which was, at the time, among the edgiest in Melbourne. The film was an obvious choice for the launch of the George Revival in August, when Berger opened the theatre’s doors for the first time in two years in an attempt to give St Kilda back its cinema. “I don’t think St Kilda is as edgy as it used to be,” he says. “But there’s still an eclectic audience here with a lot of people who are into film.” Certainly this seems true of the passers-by who stop to scan the weekly program of films posted at the cinema’s entrance, who include a well-groomed older woman, two European backpackers and a middle-aged man also scouting for loose change. Berger secured a six-month lease of the cinema from owner, St Kilda businessman Ralph Taranto, who sold the site to developers earlier this year. The new owners will take over in February, at which point the cinema’s future becomes uncertain. For his part, Berger is hoping to take the George Revival well beyond its first six months. He has given careful consideration to the diversity of his audience when programing the sessions, scheduled from Thursday to Sunday. Documentaries will screen on Thursday nights; new releases on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, and classics and family films are scheduled for Sundays. Alternative and arthouse movies on 35-millimetre film are also scheduled for Friday and Saturday nights, as part of Berger’s Spotlight program,

showcasing the work of a specific actor or director. “I want to put on a program where, in any given week, there’s a film that would appeal to every person in this area,” says Berger, who runs back of house, while his wife, Louise, looks after the bar. “The idea is to get the community behind it, get people used to seeing films here, and then see how we go.” The George hasn’t screened a film since 2011 but signs for its revival are promising; more than 700 locals turned up to opening weekend on August 17. “A few will stay for a glass of wine and a chat and we’re getting to know the audience and finding out about some of the films they want to see,” says Berger. Port Phillip mayor Amanda Stevens says that while the council doesn’t have a funding program in place to support projects such as the George Revival, it is looking to encourage such initiatives. “Council will explore options to support businesses in the creative industries,” Cr Stevens says. “We hope to have these mechanisms in place for the next budget cycle.” From 1994 to 2010, the George was tenanted by Palace Cinemas. Berger, a local at the time, credits the cinema’s early success to the guidance of former Melbourne Film Festival director James Hewison. “[Hewison] really knew his audience, and the program reflected that, but after he left, there wasn’t much thought put into the curation of films and the audience dropped off,” he says. Palace left the site in October 2010 and the cinema has remained empty, with the exception of a brief period in April 2011, when Taranto flirted with the

idea of running things himself. Operating under the name Aurora, the George lasted just two weeks. Berger will draw on a wealth of experience to avoid the same fate for the George Revival, which he hopes will continue beyond February, if its developers are prepared to negotiate. The 41-year-old got his start in business opening record shop Rising Sounds in the subway below Flinders Street station in the mid-’90s. His first foray into film was working for a documentary organisation in Britain while producing his own documentary, Duke Vin and the Birth of Ska. Berger returned to Melbourne and began organising film events including Red Hot Shorts, a showcase of short films and music videos from international film festivals, screened at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image. “I always had in the back of my mind, ‘God, it’d be nice to do this in my own place’… a friend encouraged me to check the George out and here we are,” he says. With the support of locals through a Pozible campaign, Berger secured a six-month lease on the digital projector he needed to play new release films. But he’s adamant few things equate to seeing a classic on 35-millimetre film, which is why he was delighted to find an original working projector in the George’s projection room. “Seeing a film on film is like listening to great music on vinyl, it’s just got that little bit more there,” he says. Despite cinema’s uncertainty in the digital age, Berger is confident he can re-establish the George in the hearts and minds of St Kilda locals. “There’s always going to be a market for a cinema that’s a little bit more localised, a little more personal and that is run by people who love film.” \ jdavy@theweeklyreview.com.au OCTOBER 9, 2013 \ The weekly review 39
