Preparing this report has given me the opportunity to reflect on the story of our ministry. The origins are simple – a few pastors sitting together dreaming about what it would look like to encourage and support other pastors and churches across Canada. It was shaped by a love for the local church and a love for Canada. It was also fueled by an awareness of real need in our time.
On a national level, we saw what the research has been showing: many churches experiencing attrition, a shortage of pastors, and younger generations disengaging with the local church. On a more personal level, we saw friends we loved in pastoral ministry feeling exhausted, fearful, and lonely.
We were inspired to do something about all of it; we dreamed of seeing less pastors quit and more pastors serving joyfully over the long haul. Our desire was to see less pastors lonely and unseen, and more pastors experience life-giving communities and friendships. And, through it all, we longed to raise a flag of hope that God is still on the move, building His Church in Canada.
We also knew that there were many others who had a similar dream. So we launched the Canadian Church Leaders Network — an inter-generational, interdenominational community of pastors scattered across Canada.
Now a couple of years later, so many conversations, emails and pastors gatherings have testified to the fact that pastors truly need people committed to being in their corner, championing the work they are doing.
In this past year, we were able to provide accessible digital content to fire up the imagination of pastors to innovate in their context, while also remaining rooted in the deep truths of scripture and the daily realities of faithful, pastoral work. Smaller cohorts were created, both online and in-person, allowing pastors to build friendships with one another and share the joys and struggles of ministry. We
facilitated dynamic environments where pastors could collaborate, connect and experience ministry in the power of the Holy Spirit. And in all of this we are seeing significant signs of hope for the church in Canada.
Together as we look back at the year that was, we are reminded again that God cares about this mission more than we ever could — a reality that propels us into the future with conviction and courage. Please continue praying with us for the Canadian Church. God is on the move in our nation and we have so much to be hopeful for.
We also couldn’t do any of this without the generosity of our partners, supportive churches and trusting pastors. If you’re a part of one of those groups, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You are making a real difference for pastors and churches in Canada.
Ballard, Executive Director of CCLNThe Canadian Church Leaders Network exists to see future generations of vibrant & faithful churches for the renewal of Canada.
It is no secret in Canada that the local church and the pipeline feeding into is hemorrhaging.
It has been estimated that for every one pastor that becomes a Senior Pastor, there are seven Senior Pastors retiring.
A study done by the Barna Group in 2017 revealed that over 50 years ago, “55 percent of all Protestant pastors were under the age of 45 that is, the majority of all church leaders were in their 20s, 30s and early 40’s. In 2017, just 22 percent are under 45.”
55% of pastors under 45 22% of pastors under 45
This is a picture of a church in need. So, if we want to see vibrant and faithful churches in Canada in the face of that bleakness, we need healthy pastors leading them.
Our team often reflects on Jesus’ reference to His Bride and Church as “salt” and “light” in Matthew 5. When we follow Jesus’ thinking, it goes like this:
If food goes bad, you don’t blame the food, you ask ‘where was the salt?’
If a room goes dark, you don’t blame the room, you ask ‘where was the light?’
Thus emerged the well-repeated maxim amongst our team:
Healthy cities need healthy churches, and healthy churches are always led by healthy pastors.
We love Canada and are convinced that our role is to come alongside pastors in every village, city, and shore of our nation to see them thrive for the sake of these pastors themselves, the places they serve, and the future generations who will live there.
We do wonder …
When Nathan Weselake’s imagination becomes immersed and shaped by an unshakeable, unchanging Kingdom, how will Portage la Prairie, Manitoba experience more hope in the face of darkness?
When Tia Morey is better equipped for the task of pastoring in our time, will her grandchildren inherit a more vibrant Church in Bonne Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador?
When Jason Charles comes to life in a web of deep, local friendships, what fruit will he be able to witness in Langley, British Columbia well into his older years?
We want to increase the health, effectiveness & longevity of pastors, and we are committed long-term to see the negative trends at hand reversed in our time and beyond.
So, join us as we serve pastors and seed a hopeful future for our nation.
We care about coming alongside pastors at every stage of their ministry journey. So, we have developed intentional ways for all pastors, wherever they are, to experience value in the CCLN world. We want to ensure that there is always a place for the Youth Pastor in Halifax, the Senior Pastor in Whitehorse, the Executive Pastor in Vancouver and many others to be helped and encouraged as much as they would like to be in their pastoral journey.
CCLN WE:
Invest in focused subsets of pastors by facilitating tailored and collaborative learning communities.
Engage select groups of pastors by hosting relationally and spiritually formative gatherings both in-person and online.
Serve the wider Church and pastors in Canada by creating and curating culture shaping content.
Our learning communities enable us to walk deeply with a smaller group of pastors over a longer period of time. They are designed to deepen character and develop necessary competencies in pastors, while allowing us to have a measurable impact on future decades of ministry in Canada. It is easy for pastors to become siloed and feel alone in the important work they are doing. These focused learning communities help combat that tendency by inviting pastors into collaboration not competition, creating a web of relationships that cross regions and denominations.
This year, our primary learning community was our Church Leaders Incubator — a two year program for young senior leaders who have a vision to influence the church in Canada.
Online Gatherings | September 2021 - Present
Twice a month incubator participants gather online to strengthen their character and pastoral competencies and learn from each other.
Sessions rotate between biblical teaching on pastoral leadership with Darrell Johnson and thematic sessions with guest facilitators.
Themes have included:
+ Leading from Spiritual Gifts
+ Church Governance
+ Leading Staff
+ Design Thinking + Prayer Ministry
+ Mentorship
At the beginning of May, we took our Church Leaders Incubator on a trip to the UK to meet with different church leaders. With a long history of Christian tradition, England has experienced the decline and resurgence of engagement with the Church over hundreds of years. A trip like this is meant to provide a wider perspective on the historic and global church so these pastors could return to Canada with more hope and imagination for how we can serve the Canadian Church in our moment.
LISTEN TO SOME OF OUR FAVORITE MOMENTS FROM THE TRIP
We started the retreat by continuing our work on defining both the call of pastors and our unique calls to pastor in our contexts. Darrell Johnson worked with the participants on understanding how we can more deeply abide in Jesus in our work as pastors. Chris Price unpacked how bitterness and unforgiveness can grow and hurt the souls of pastors. Jason led them in an exercise to strengthen their conviction and sessions to grow their character and competencies.
“Being able to journey over two years with other pastors through the Church Leaders Incubator has brought a real depth to those relationships. As I went into the second fall retreat with this group, it felt as though I had brothers and sisters in ministry, not just acquaintances or colleagues.”
- James Clarence, First Assembly Church, Alberta
A key facet of the Church Leaders Incubator is pairing pastors with a coach and a pastoral mentor to help guide them and focus their growth. These relationships are one of the ways we provide a highly tailored and adaptive experience for the unique contexts each pastor comes from. They also help to emphasize the importance of these rhythms beyond the program timeframe to continue their development.
“I’ve most benefited from the coaching aspect of the program in two ways: (1) He has provided me with a confidential thinking-partner to help me wrestle with leadership questions and insecurities I was aware of, but unsure move forward on and then (2) helped me develop personal strategies so that when I recognize certain patterns of thinking, I can challenge them and replace them with what I know to be true and good. “
- Alex Perello, Cascades Church, British Columbia
It has been such a privilege to have the opportunity to invest in other pastors through the CCLN incubator program. The landscape of the church has changed drastically over the last few years and to have an opportunity to offer encouragement, support, and guidance to other pastors is as much a gift to me as I hope it is to them. I believe that the more we support, encourage, and learn from each other the stronger and more effective the church in Canada will be.
- Tammy Giffen, Groundswell Church, Nova Scotia
There is something profound about gathering pastors from different traditions, regions and styles under Jesus, in the same room together. We believe it is not just important, but needed for pastors to be beside and in front of one another con necting, worshiping and learning. Today, we are finding that these gatherings serve as rallying points for influencing church culture, catalyzing unity amongst pastors and casting a vision for pastoral leadership tuned to Kingdom values and the unique tensions of the time.
On June 3rd, we invited pastors from the Vancouver area and online from across Canada to learn from Darrell Johnson on one of the things he loves most: preaching. With over 50 years of faithful ministry and service to the church, we always relish the opportunity to hold up Darrell’s example and wisdom whenever we get the chance. In this full day event, Darrell shared a biblical vision for preaching, how he structures a message and how to deliver a sermon that captures the hearts and minds of people.
From August 24th-27th, we invited lead pastors and their spouses from across Canada to beautiful Malibu, British Columbia for a time of retreat. Our goal was for this time together to be about refreshment, connection and fun. Throughout these four days, we saw hope reignited in these pastors and a recovery of that first love for the Lord and the Church. We witnessed pastors feel renewed in their commitment to faithfulness in ministry with a refueled vision and passion to impact Canada. And with these newly formed friendships, the ongoing impact in our nation could be more connected than before.
“The Malibu retreat was some of the most meaningful days my wife and I have experienced in our 10 years of marriage. She made a couple of connections with other women that have left her feeling so supported and encouraged in life and ministry. We experienced the presence of God so tangibly when we were prayed for as a couple. I will be forever grateful to CCLN for the friendships and the time of connection with my wife, God, and nature that the Malibu retreat left us with.”
- Joel Varty
“I am so grateful for the time we had at this retreat. I felt sooo taken care of during this time. We often do the taking care of, so it was truly appreciated all the care that was put into this intentional time. It was a time of true rest and also some great fun and I feel blessed and rejuvenated to face this year ahead — glory to God for all things!
- Krista Franci
Mark Buchanan, long-time pastor, writer, “pastor to pastors” and our retreat’s guest speaker shared his reflections after a morning session on the ministry that happened.
“I have been involved with pastoral events and work for 30+ years and have never experienced anything like this retreat. The team genuinely loves pastors, and believes in them and their work.”
- Mark Buchanan
In the sunny days of early October, we welcomed 105 youth pastors to Vancouver for our first-ever Canadian Youth Pastor Summit. This gathering was about inviting youth pastors into a space of collaboration, connection and worship – all for the sake of the next generation. Many of the lead pastors of tomorrow are the youth pastors of today. So this time together was an investment in both the faithfulness and fruitfulness of these pastors now and in the decades to come.
105 Youth Pastors | 83 Churches
Representing roughly 8000 students between B.C. and Ontario
We are always looking for excuses to pull pastors into the same room to learn alongside and connect with one another. Our digital gathering in November was an excuse to do that on a national scale, in a low-barrier way. After hearing Darrell Johnson share on themes unique to pastoral leadership, we divided pastors into role-based small groups of 4-6 pastors. We were deeply encouraged as pastors were able to share what they learned, express pain points and encourage one another in prayer.
For every 10 pastors who attended, there were:
Provinces represented:
We are using creative content to shape the conversation around what it means to be a pastor today with the goal of provid ing a vision for local church leadership that is hopeful, self-effacing and centred around the example of Jesus. Our digital content gives us a wide reach to spark conversation, share resources, and celebrate stories from Canadian churches. For every scroll a pastor does through their feed or their inbox, we make sure there is something there from us to serve them.
Once a month, we provide curated resources directly to the inbox of pastors. These emails are one of the ways we speak to important themes on the minds of pastors and equip them with practical tools that can strengthen them as they lead.
Our social channels are all about helping pastors feel seen, built up, and celebrated. By offering content that paints a compelling vision of pastoral ministry and highlights the ways God is moving across Canada, our hope is that pastors feel encouraged and inspired in their daily work.
We sit down for conversations with Canadian and global voices to help draw pastors into what it means to lead in the way of Jesus. On the Canadian Church Leaders Podcast, pastors are inspired by stories of the inbreaking Kingdom, challenged around important matters of the heart and compelled towards faithful, long-time service to Jesus, their families, churches and communities.
“Most of my life as I’ve listened to and learned from other Christian leaders I have to fight through envy and pride. But not with CCLN. The CCLN stuff usually makes me long to be a better husband, father, and pastor. It makes me want to know Jesus better than I do. It doesn’t make me feel insecure or incompetent or less than.”
“The work of CCLN has been one of the most impactful sources of insight and encouragement for me since April 2020. On a professional level, I have found valuable and practical wisdom. But, more importantly, on a personal level, I have repeatedly heard the voice of Jesus through my interactions with the content and leadership of CCLN.”

John Lamos is the lead pastor of Lighthouse Church on Grand Manan, a small island in Atlantic Canada, off the coast of New Brunswick. He is married to Jesse and has two beautiful daughters, and a son on the way. John is a long time listener of the Canadian Church Leaders Podcast, and a part of our Church Leaders Incubator.
Around 5 years ago, there were three distinct Wesleyan churches on Grand Manan that were trying to figure out what the future looked like. Eventually, the idea came forward to merge into one church. Fast forward 3 years and, as I was coming out of a different church in New Brunswick, I heard about this hurting, but beautiful community through a friend. After considering how I might be involved, I spoke with the lead pastor at the time. Instantly, my heart was gripped by their story and this community of people. During the conversation, this one question kept going through my head: “What could it look like if these three communities came together for the betterment of the Kingdom of God on this island?” Without even visiting, my family and I packed everything and moved for me to be the Assistant Pastor. Through a series of events, less than a year later, I became Lead Pastor of Lighthouse Church.
They were difficult. I didn’t feel like I exactly had a place to belong, especially before pastoring at Lighthouse Church. I spent a lot of my time searching for where I fit as a pastor in these common forms of success – forms that were unhealthy and unsustainable. I was incredibly busy, rushed and increasingly less and less at home. I was serving the church at the expense of my own soul, and my family’s health. At one point I remember my wife basically saying
Ever since I sensed the call to pastoral ministry, I always saw myself planting a church in the downtown core of a more influential city. It seemed more fun and attractive to me. I never thought I would end up in a place like Grand Manan. But alongside the move to Lighthouse Church, I sensed my paradigms of “success” as a pastor or having a “successful” church beginning to change. Deep down, I longed for something different; something deeper and more personal.
“ if this is what ministry is like, I don’t want a part in it.”
I really hit a wall in January, 2022. I felt like I was running on reserves, I felt restless and I didn’t know what the next step was. I remember going on a walk and listening to an episode of the Canadian Church Leaders Podcast. I heard this pastor (Tyler Staton) calling other pastors to personal holiness and consecration, and naming that as the starting place for transformation in our churches. As I listened, I felt this invitation towards health and holiness and away from “big” or “cool.” It was awakening something in me that I knew was most deeply there.
Then in other interviews on the podcast, I started to notice pastors who I looked up to sharing way more about the state of their hearts and their longing for Jesus than than their best practices, statistics or programs. My heart was drawn to that different set of metrics. So while I was hearing heartbreaking stories of pastors falling around me, at the same time I was listening to these conversations that made me think my personal transformation is the most important thing and that it will actually be the greatest gift to me, my family and the church I am leading.
Over the last two years, the community within the Church Leaders Incubator has been the biggest game changer. The Incubator has brought me into proximity with men and women who hunger for more than great churches, but for God Himself. Everything else is secondary. And it’s not a community based on denomination, age, style, or gender – but people who long for more of Jesus in themselves and in their churches. It’s given me a family of pastors way outside my context, who understand the cost of pastoring and I feel less alone than I ever have because of it. Some of my friendships in this community have grown quicker than with people I’ve known my whole life. This Incubator family has also helped me slow down even more to realize where I am planted, encouraging me to let my roots grow deep and to ask God how He wants me to help the people in my sphere see Him more clear ly. Now, it’s way more about seeing people experience Jesus, be made into disciples and their families being transformed than anything else. And with that as the vision of success, it doesn’t matter where I am – rural communities like Grand Manan need God just as much as the large cities I once wanted to lead in.
The other night we were talking and she said something to the effect of “you’re different.” She is seeing that I am carrying more responsibility and weight than I was years ago at my unhealthiest, but that my family and I are doing better than we’ve ever been. She has seen me grow and change in real time in the environments created by CCLN, and it’s caused her to only want me to invest more in those relationships and spaces. Funny enough, she’s now listening to the Canadian Church Leaders Podcast with me. The other day she listened to one of the episodes with Darrell Johnson, telling me that we need to step more into shepherding our church as a family. For the first time in our lives, we both sense the importance of going deeper into this call together.
By CCLN investing in my health as a pastor, they’ve invested in the health of my wife and kids. By investing in pastors, I am seeing CCLN actually lifting up families across Canada, and my family is just one of the beneficiaries.
“Being a Lead Pastor comes with many challenges. Being a NEW Lead Pastor is a whirlwind. As I stepped into the role of Lead Pastor this year, CCLN has been a constant reminder of God’s heart and vision for the world, and has served to empower and equip me as I step into the places God has called me to step. Throughout this season, CCLN has come alongside me (and other staff in our church) to ensure that I am not ‘fighting the good fight’ alone. They have provided community, resources, insight, and a strong sense of collaborative mission. I can’t really picture what this year would have looked like without the support, prayers, and partnership of CCLN.”
- Mike Perks, Lead Pastor, CRCF Church
“I spent many years serving the church without a mentor to help guide and encourage me. Through the Church Leaders Incubator, I was connected with a pastor near me who deeply understands the culture and context I am in. Having the opportunity to connect, develop new ideas and express pain points with this pastor has been instrumental in helping me become healthier as a young lead pastor.”
- Tia Morey, Lead Pastor, Birchy Head Pentecostal
“As someone who served our church family as a pastor alongside my husband for 35 years, I was so grateful for those who walked with me, encouraged me and challenged me on my journey. I often felt lonely in my role, but I knew I was never alone as there were faithful mentors close by at all times. When I was asked to serve in a mentorship role through the Incubator Program, I was delighted as I knew my life experiences could help encourage a young leader who would face similar challenges in their leadership role. Not only have I developed a beautiful relationship with my mentee, I am also learning so much from her at the same time. She inspires me and blesses me immensely”
- Helen Burns, Founding Pastor of Relate Church
“In a post-covid landscape, the nature of pastoral ministry has become an evolving question. CCLN has been a great anchor point as it doesn’t hesitate to engage with the new challenges we face, but provides helpful resources for pastors to carve a clear way forward. The scope of pastoral voices that CCLN rallies in provides a resounding assurance that we are in this together as each pastor leads through a new climate of ministry.”
- Victor Maynard, Lead Pastor, Village Church Surrey
“I’ve been deeply encouraged by the investment of CCLN in pastors. Canada is such a broad and diverse landscape, and it’s a beautiful thing to feel the support of an organization that champions and unifies the Church and its leaders across our nation. Our team is stronger because of it!”
- Angela Doell, Lead Pastor, Relate Church
“Over the years as a pastor, I have looked for mentors who would be willing to step into my life to pray for me, to speak truth into my life, and to join me on the journey of faith. God has been good and has provided me with deep mentoring relationships. I can honestly say that I wouldn’t be who I am or where I am without them in my life. When asked if I would mentor a pastor within the CCLN Incubator program, I was thrilled! What a joy to walk alongside a pastor to encourage, pray for, and learn together. I am so looking forward to this journey over the coming months.”
- Jay Ewing, Pastor of Spiritual Formation, Redwood Park Church
“Pastors are my heroes. I have believed that since I was a teenager. CCLN exists to strengthen pastors and so, for me, it’s an incredible honour to be part of this ministry. These are significant and challenging days for the church in Canada but I am full of hope and anticipation for the days ahead — God is doing a wonderful work, His church is alive, and His Kingdom is at hand.”
Darrell Johnson Pastoral Overseer“I am so grateful for how the Spirit of God has been moving in the ministry of CCLN this year. He enabled me to present a three hour seminar on expository preaching that has encouraged many; He has build a very caring, supportive community among the Incubator participants, wherein all are free to ask the hard questions and share the deep things of the heart; and He has pulled together a team of incredibly gifted leaders of the ministry, with whom I experience great joy when we meet. Thank you Lord!”
Anne Miranda National Ministries Director“I am witnessing God restore hope throughout Canada. He is awakening an unquenchable “fire in our bones” as pastors positioned in this country are messengers of the good news. The faithful church leaders who shepherd Canadians from coast to coast to coast remain passionate as ever to till the soil of this land.”
Daniel Roe Creative Director“Over this past year, we’ve been able to see genuine connections and friendships between pastors as a result of the different events and programs we’ve run. So many pastors travel the journey of ministry alone, and I love that we’re able to help pastors build deep ministry friendships for the long haul.”
“My favourite part of this year was being able to serve more young pastors through events like our Summit. It’s beautiful seeing the deep impact in their lives today and to think about how that investment over time will shape the health of Canadian churches well into the future.”
Ralph Alvaro Communications Manager“Every day we get a peek of more and more of what the landscape of churches and pastors in Canada looks like. There just seems to be an endless amount of untold stories of God working and his faithfulness in pastors’ lives. The highlight has been uncovering those and telling them.”
Thompson Partnerships & Programs Manager“It is such a gift to do this sort of work and to be reminded that throughout our country, God is moving powerfully in pastors, churches, and communities. I love our team and the joy it is to invest together into the Church with them!”
Mariah Smith Event Coordinator“This year, I’ve loved being able to create environments where pastors could connect with God, connect with one another, learn, and rest. Specifically, it was a privilege to honour Youth Pastors at the Canadian Youth Pastors Summit through providing space for them to be resourced for this unique time, eat great snacks, and build strong relationships.”
JoshLet’s seed a hopeful future for the Canadian Church.
“Being a ministry leader in Toronto, CCLN has been an incredible source of encouragement, sharing stories of faithful leaders and thriving churches from all over Canada. I give because I believe in CCLN’s mission to equip and build Jesus’ church, together, in our nation.”

“The team at CCLN is deeply committed to seeing healthy, vibrant church communities rise up and go deep in their walks with the Lord. They intentionally provide edification for our leaders and work towards unifying the body of Christ across denominational and generational lines. What God is doing through this team fills my heart with hope for the future of the Church and is a genuine delight to partner with.”
