Founded in 1992 by avant-garde visionary and theater director Robert Wilson, The Watermill Center is an interdisciplinary laboratory for the arts and humanities situated on ten acres of Shinnecock ancestral territory on Long Island’s East End. With an emphasis on creativity and collaboration, Watermill i​ntegrates performing arts practice with resources from the humanities, research from the sciences and inspiration from the visual arts. ​The Center is unique within the global landscape of experimental artistic practice and regularly convenes the brightest minds from across disciplines to do, in Wilson’s words, “what no one else is doing.”

2019 YEAR IN REVIEW

ARTIST PROGRAMS In 2019, our Artist Residency Program hosted 22 residencies, welcoming more than 50 artists from over 10 nations, including Inga Maren Otto Fellows Marina Rosenfeld, Lucien Smith, Lars Daniel Rehn, Shaun Gladwell, and Dawn Kasper. The International Summer Program saw 85 artists from 24 nations come together to live and work for five weeks exploring what it means to be a “global artist.”

EDUCATION PROGRAMS This year, our Education Programs reached over 1,000 kids and 150 professionals through workshops with over 25 artists as well as field trips, tours and collection visits. Our partners included Bridgehampton Child Care & Recreation Center, The Hamptons Arts Network, The Retreat and Bridgehampton HeadStart.

PUBLIC PROGRAMS Over 1,800 community members visited The Watermill Center in 2019, engaging with our Artists-in-Residence through open rehearsals, workshops, studio visits, lectures and artist talks, providing unique insight into the artistic process.

SPECIAL EVENTS This year, proceeds from our Special Events supported The International Summer Program and raised over half of the operating costs for our year-round Education and Artist Residency Programs. Our Second Annual Winter Benefit treated guests to a special performance by Nico Muhly; Tabula Rasa: The 27th Annual Summer Benefit & Auction welcomed over 1,000 art enthusiasts to explore over 30 installations and performances; and our inaugural Artists’ Table Dinner highlighted produce from local farms in an evening curated by Watermill Alumni.

THE INGA MAREN OTTO FELLOWSHIP Created with a generous gift from philanthropist Inga Maren Otto, the fellowship provides support for outstanding artists who have demonstrated exceptional creative ability in the arts.

SHAUN GLADWELL Shaun Gladwell, an Australian-born, London-based artist, developed LIBERTAS VANITAS, a new virtual reality experience engaging American iconography through recordings of famed sites such as The Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty.

DAWN KASPER New-York interdisciplinary artist Dawn Kasper used her residency at The Center to create The Bells, a new kinetic sound sculpture, exploring the movement and composition of a chandelier comprised of individual bells.

LARS DANIEL REHN Swedish visual artist Lars Daniel Rehn spent his time at The Center foraying into his first sculptural project. Known for his dystopic and enchanting paintings, Rehn built a large-scale three dimensional version of one of the enigmatic cubes that intervene on his provincial landscapes.

MARINA ROSENFELD American composer and artist Marina Rosenfeld continued her research into experimental sound and performance practice through her latest work, Music Stands in which metal armatures support a constellation of microphones and speakers.

LUCIEN SMITH The Watermill Center and the Parrish Art Museum partnered to support the work of Montauk based artist, Lucien Smith.

Smith spent his time at Watermill developing new large scale works that then were displayed at the Parrish’s Artists Choose Artists exhibition.

THE ARTIST RESIDENCY PROGRAM Each year, collectives and individuals take up residence at The Center to develop works that critically investigate the existing norms of artistic practice.

AFUA ANSONG Ghanaian American writer, Afua Ansong continued work on her manuscript African (American), exploring what it means to be a Black African and Black American in the United States, and why people and animals relocate yet remain firm in a desire to always return to “home.”

MALLORY CATLETT (RESTLESS NYC) Mallory Catlett of the New York based theatre company, Restless NYC delved into Watermill’s archives to continue development of DECODER, a concert series based on the writings of William Burroughs that exposes our complicity in the systems that control us.

COLECTIVO ZOOLÓGICO The Chilean/French theatre group came together to develop NORA, an adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s House of Dolls, exploring the idea of love and heterosexual marriage in the context of our capitalistic society.

EMILY FURR American visual artist Emily Furr created Microcosms: Works on Paper, a series of small collages using paper ephemera, paint, graphite, and ink. Each work examines tiny worlds found in humankind, nature, and the cosmos.

JUDITH HERTOG Amsterdam-born, Vermont-based essayist, journalist and teacher Judith Hertog spent her residency working on her newest nonfiction book, Circling Lhasa, about her journey of discovery and disillusionment during her travels through Tibet.

THE ARTIST RESIDENCY PROGRAM RAJA FEATHER KELLY + THE FEATH3R THEORY New-York based performer and choreographer Raja Feather Kelly and the feath3r theory developed WEDNESDAY, a remaking of Dog Day Afternoon as a speculative documentary dance theater queer-fantasia where psychological realism meets pop soap opera.

KIRK KNIGHT Brooklyn rapper, songwriter, and producer Kirk Knight spent his residency developing his latest EP with producer Adrian Lau and Matt Marvin (of Phony Ppl).

LAURIE LAMBRECHT + TONI ROSS East End natives, Laurie Lambrecht and Toni Ross used their residency to further develop their individual and collective practices. Exploring pattern and texture found in tree bark, the duo created a series of new works, including a large scale tree made from hand-dyed bark.

MOUNTAIN TIME ARTS Based in the Rocky Mountain West region of the United States, Mountain Time Arts creates research-based artworks that engage local social and environmental concerns.

STANDBY SNOW: CHRONICLES OF A HEATWAVE continues this practice through a new site-specific opera.

EILEEN O’KANE KORNREICH New York based visual artist, Eileen O’Kane Kornreich explored The Center’s Library of Inspiration to create a new series of collaged drawings exploring how human mortality relates to and shapes the natural environment around us.

LYNSEY PEISINGER American performer and choreographer Lynsey Peisinger worked with members of the Hamptons community to create Citizen’s Cabaret, an immersive work weaving together individual and group histories and individual creative impulses.

THE ARTIST RESIDENCY PROGRAM JEFFREY PERKINS American poet Jeffrey Perkins explored themes of queer identity and spirituality as he worked on his second book of poems. Using his rural roots and adult urban experiences, Perkins investigated how identity grows in relation to context and how perceived divisions can be bridged toward new ways of relating.

CLEEK SCHREY + THE DAXOPHONE CONSORT American musicians Cleek Schrey, Daniel Fishkin, and Ron Shalom created an ensemble of daxophones, a German instrument who’s sound, somewhere between a cello and badger, ranges from furtive gurgles and delicate whistles to wild screams.

ANDRINA SMITH Shinnecock writer and actor, Andrina Smith spent her residency researching historical documents, traditional stories, and historically relevant consultants to share the story of the indigenous people of Long Island from colonization to present day.

MAYA WATANABE + AGUSTINA MUÑOZ Peruvian visual artist Maya Watanabe and Argentinian performance and video artist Agustina Muñoz explored staging nature as a dramatic event. Through examining how we view natural phenomena, Watanabe and Muñoz question how we define life.

NI’JA WHITSON Based in New York, interdisciplinary artist and writer, Ni’Ja Whitson developed an technological and interdisciplinary performance diptych, comprised of interconnected and individual works that explore “the vaporous body”: an inquiry into Blackness, astral geographies, shape-shifting technologies of space and indigeneity, and futurity.

SASHA WORTZEL New York based filmmaker Sasha Wortzel continued development on River of Grass, an essay-style film and installation examining how Florida’s vulnerability to climate change is historically rooted in the Everglades’ legacies of colonization, drainage and development.

PUBLIC PROGRAMMING Public Programs at The Watermill Center invite the local community to engage with artists and thinkers from around the world through our unique and innovative programming.

IN PROCESS In Process @ The Watermill Center is our ongoing series of open rehearsals, workshops, artist talks and studio visits that invite the community to engage with the work of our international Artists-in-Residence. The Watermill Center invites audiences of all ages and backgrounds to gain unique insight into the creative process of artists, cultivating an understanding of how artists from across the globe develop new work.

VIEWPOINTS Viewpoints is our year-round conversation series, granting artists and art enthusiasts the opportunity to gather and discuss creative themes vital to the contemporary moment.

This year included Oliver Beer, Robert Wilson, Penny Arcade, Isabella Rossellini, Shane Weeks, Eddie Peake and David van der Leer.

DISCOVER WATERMILL DAY Discover Watermill Day annually opens The Center’s ten acres for the public to freely explore site-specific installations and performances, providing a unique opportunity for the Hamptons community to meet artists from over 30 countries participating in The Watermill Center’s International Summer Program.

FAMILY DAY + COMMUNITY DAY Family Day + Community Day both engage the local community through hands-on workshops with our Artists-inResidence and international roster of alumni.

This year, Cleek Schrey and the Daxophone Consort turned our dining room table into a giant daxophone for families to play, and Afua Ansong led a printed tapestry workshop inspired by Adinkra symbols from Ghana.

SPECIAL EVENTS Special Events at The Watermill Center engage a unique and international network of artists, organizations, and arts enthusiasts and professionals in support of our year-round programming.

ARTISTS’ TABLE BRUNCH Artists’ Table Brunch includes a farm-to-table meal prepared by local chef and restaurateur Jason Weiner (Almond Bridgehampton) and features an intimate presentation by our Artists-in-Residence.

ARTISTS’ TABLE DINNER Engaging a network of local innovators, creatives, growers, producers and art enthusiasts, Artists’ Table Dinner pays homage to the rich traditions, artistic heritage and food culture of Long Island’s East End together with the legacy of The Watermill Center.

This year’s theme of ICAROS was curated by Watermill Alum Carlos Soto and featured a performance experience directed by Artist-in-Residence, Lynsey Peisinger.

THE SECOND ANNUAL WINTER GALA The Watermill Center Winter Gala is an intimate evening hosted by Robert Wilson, celebrating our Artists-in-Residence and the 2020 season. The evening features a seated dinner special performance by an artist from our international community.

This year we welcomed guests to Legacy Records, where they were treated to a special performance by Nico Muhly.

TABULA RASA: THE 27TH ANNUAL SUMMER BENEFIT Described as “an enchanted forest” and ”performance art extravaganza,” the Annual Summer Benefit unites the worlds of art, performance, music, theatre, design, architecture and fashion.

This year, presented by Van Cleef & Arpels, honored Katharine Rayner and Carrie Mae Weems and featured installations from artists such as Bianca Casady, Graciela Sacco, LEIMAY, Gillian Walsh, and The Queen of Krump.
