OGHS DRAMA HOSTS CHARACTER BREAKFAST FUNDRAISER by: Myles Hudson

The annual Character breakfast fundraiser for OGHS Drama was held Saturday, November 3 at Walk-On’s Bistreaux and Bar from 8:00-10:00 a.m.

“When we started this three years ago, we were not sure it would be a hit,” Volunteer for the Drama Department Mrs. Swilley said. “Everyone in the community seems to love it. It is a great way for the community to come out and get to know Oak Grove Drama.”

OGHS Drama Character Breakfast was first performed three years ago. Now a frequent fundraiser, OGHS Drama keeps the Character Breakfast alive with all the enthusiasm and joy experienced in the first year.

“We have done this now four times,” Director of the drama department, Mrs. Allmon said. “ It is probably our most fun fundraiser because everybody gets to be characters, and we get to have a lot of fun and spread a lot of joy in two hours for all the children around.”

Oak Grove High School’s Cheer Team is hosting a Semi-Formal Winter Dance next month on Saturday, December 8. The dance will be the first dance Oak Grove High School has hosted since the Homecoming dance in 2016.

The Winter Dance is open to all Oak Grove High School students, and will be held in the Oak Grove High School gym. The entry fee to the dance will be $10 per person.

Students from other schools may attend the dance with an Oak Grove student, but the correct forms must be completed and turned in before the deadline.

“We want to have more events to have students make memories during

their high school years at OG,” cheer coach Ashley Burdine said. “It’s also going to help support our trip to the UCA National Championships in February.”

Students of Oak Grove are excited about having a school-sponsored dance again.

“I’m really looking forward to it. I think it’s a great way for our cheer team to raise money for our nation cheer competition and do something fun for the whole student body,” Senior Class President and Cheer Captain, Jordan Newell said. ”I have one passion in my life, and that passion is dancing,” Student Body Treasurer, Michael Pitts, said. “Why does no one know this about me you might ask? Well OGHS hasn’t had a dance since my freshman year, and because of this, I haven’t been able to

show the school my passion. Recently, I’ve heard that the cheerleading team might host a Winter Semi-formal. This is a wonderful opportunity.”

“I think it would be fun because we really only have one dance a year (Prom),” junior Liam Breithaupt said. “I don’t think a lot of people realize how much fun it would be to have one.”

“I think we should have the Winter Semi-Formal Dance because I think it is a good alternative for not having a Homecoming dance, where all grades are included,” sophomore, Annalise Washburn said.

“I’m looking forward to it,” freshman, Stephen Mcinnis said. “It sounds like fun, and this would be my first high school dance, so I want to see what it’s like.”

BAND MARCHES TO STATE TO CLOSE OUT SEASON by: Lyric Church

The Oak Grove High School marching band competed in the Mississippi 6A State Championships at Germantown High School last weekend.

The band went into this year’s championships as defending champions of the competition. This year they placed fourth in percussion, sixth in color guard, and sixth overall.

“I became drum major to push myself and the program to be better and to continue that mind set,” senior Jalen Holloman said. “Either people thought that they didn’t need to do anything because we already won, or they got content with mediocrity.”

For the past two years, the OGHS band has placed in the top three. However, this year Hernando High School took first, Petal High School took second, and De Soto High School took

third.

“Our success is the product of our work. If we want to work like a sixth place band, then we will get the score of a sixth place band,” senior drum major Jalen Holloman said. “I can’t do anybody else’s part besides my own.”

This year’s show was entitled “Serpentine”. It told the story of a snake charmer, played by junior Caleb Perniciaro, charming snakes, played by the color guard, to do his bidding. The “snakes” eventually shed their skin and fight back.

“The season was overall great, and I feel like it was mostly the judges that just didn’t like the show at all,” junior color guard captain Zsanett Molnar said. “Our last run was actually the best run we have ever had, and everyone was so confident about it because everything went perfectly well.”

Now that marching season is over, the band is beginning to prepare for

their concert season that occurs during the spring. Auditions for concert band placement began yesterday in the band hall after school.

“I am hoping concert season will consist of people practicing and forming better habits. I think it should go well, and it will be more relaxed,” Holloman said. “As long as there continues to be growth and self improvement, I think things will be going well, and the environment will be positive.”

The band’s official concert season begins with their first public performance during a Christmas concert in December on a date that has yet to be released.

“I feel like there is gonna be a lot more pressure but not, because concert season is so much different than marching season,” Molnar said. “We’re not marching. We’re sitting down in a band, and it’s all about blending and tone.”

GIRL SCOUTS KILLED IN HIT AND RUN

Three Girl Scouts and a parent were killed Saturday, November 3 when a truck struck them while their troop was picking up trash along a roadway in Wisconsin. The driver of a black Ford-150 fled the scene, but later turned himself in. Police identified him as Colton Treu, 21, of Chippewa Falls. He admitted to “huffing” chemicals prior to the accident. He was charged with four counts of homicide by negligent use of a motor vehicle and homicide while intoxicated.

NEWS VENDING MACHINE FOR HOMELESS

As winter approaches, a new vending machine in Muncie, Indiana is being stocked with warm blankets and clothes for the homeless. The vending machine is readily available to the homeless people in the town, and all they have to do is register with local community services. They are given tokens that can be used to “purchase” the goods, which were donated by local residents who want to offer their support to the community.

11-YEAR-OLD SHOOTS GRANDMOTHER

An 11-year-old boy allegedly killed his grandmother before turning the gun on himself in Arizona on Saturday.

His grandfather and 65-year-old wife asked their grandson to clean his room, but he was being stubborn about it.

While the couple sat down to watch television, the grandson came behind them with a handgun that belonged to the grandfather and shot his grandmother. The man then heard another gunshot and saw his grandson collapse.

SWIM TEAM MAKES CHAMPIONSHIP COUNT by: Kelsey Terrell

The swim team dominated another state championship, breaking records and making their school proud.

The girls, senior Kailey Skinner, sophomore Kaylee Evans, sophomore Ora Williams, and junior Jaqui Fortenberry, were 12th overall in relay. Skinner earned ninth in the state for 100 butterfly.

The students rose to the challenge despite feeling the pressure of the big event.

“It was stressful...just knowing that if one person misses their event you’re out for the rest of the meet.” Fortenberry said.

“I felt a ton of pressure going into state. It was my last meet ever, so I knew I had to do good to finish off my swimming career well.” Skinner said.

“At south state, the boys’ relay team knew they were going to win, but at state, only top three get medals. They were really wanting medals, so they were feeling a lot of pressure.“ coach Tammy Evans said.

The boys, junior Jonathan Pack, senior Kenneth Keith, junior Oakley Camille, and senior Alex Miller, came in fifth for both medley and free-

style relay.

“It was inspiring, and hopefully we can just progress even further in the future,“ Pack said. “We’re just gonna keep putting in hard work, so we can do even better next year. It was a great feeling to represent our school the way we did, going out there and getting top eight in the state in those relays.”

Miller is now a State Champion in the 100 back as well as the 100 butterfly, and he set a new state record.

This was Miller’s fifth consecutive year to win as state champion in the 100 butterfly.

“Alex is an example of someone who has put hard work in for many years, and is seeing the positive results of his hard work. He is a great person and a great swimmer, and I wish the best of luck for him in his future swimming career.“ Pack said.

“Alex did awesome this year. He had a goal for himself and for the team.

A lot of people don’t realize that he swims a relay, two individual events, and another relay. He swam the most out of everybody,“ coach Evans said.

“He had to really dig in. I’m proud of him, and I’m so happy for him because he works really hard.

The competition allowed the team to see that their hard work and dedication was truly worth it.

“I’ve been swimming for almost ten years, so to see how far I’ve come since I started is crazy, especially since it’s my senior year.”

“It was good knowing that everyone’s work paid off in the end.” Fortenberry said “Congrats to all, I am so proud and lucky to work with these kids,” coach Evans said “They did their best, and they’re so happy,“ coach Evans said. “I was really happy for them to cut their time and do really well.”

CROSS COUNTRY CLOSES SEASON AT STATE by: Kat Thaggard

The Oak Grove High School Cross Country team traveled to Clinton last Monday to attend the State Competition. The team placed 11th out of 30 teams, and senior Clay Derrick placed ninth in the boys run.

The meet was held on the Choctaw trails track, and each competitor ran a total of five kilometers.

The team took 14 runners (seven boys and seven girls) to compete in the 6A category. These students qualified for state by being their team’s top runners at previous meets. For many runners, this was their final meet. Among these runners is senior Kailey Skinner.

“I was kinda nervous when we got to the meet because it was my last meet ever,” Skinner said. “And it was State, so I knew that I had to do good.”

The team started preparing at the beginning of the year, running during fourth block and after school. They also attended many meets to earn

their place in the championship.

The runners each have their own pre-run rituals they complete before every meet.

“Normally the girls huddle together before we run and say a quick prayer and kinda pump each other up,” Skinner said.

One of the runners biggest inspirations and encouragers is their leader, Coach Terrill.

“No matter what, no matter how bad our attitude is at practice or at a meet or anything, he always encourages us to do our best.”

Terrill was with the runners every step of the way, constantly checking on them throughout the meet and giving encouraging words.

According to Skinner, the best feeling is when you finish.

“When I finished, I felt very tired at first, but it felt like an accomplishment and an end of an era for cross country.”

Now that the season is over, Skinner and her teammates reminisce on their last cross country meet of the

“When I’m running… well, I love to run cause I kinda forget about everything else, and it’s a lot of fun to run. I love running with my team. It’s a good way to exercise and have fun.”

There’s a New Quarterback in Town

Imagine being in the NFL as a player on the practice squad for a team and finding out three days before a game that you will be the starting quarterback.

On Thursday, November 1, University of Southern Mississippi alumnus, Nick Mullens, debuted in his first NFL regular season start for the San Francisco 49ers. A great performance is an understatement.

Mullens is a former USM quarterback who broke every statistical passing record at USM. Signed by the 49ers in 2017 as an undrafted free agent, Mullens had his first opportunity to start at quarterback due to injured quarterbacks higher up on the depth chart.

Mullens ended out his first NFL start against the Oakland Raiders with absolutely phenomenal statistics. Mullens had 16 completions of the 22 passes attempted, threw for 262 yards, and had 3 passing touchdowns for the day.

The most mind blowing thing about this debut was his passer rating. Mullens broke the NFL’s record for highest first game passer rating with 20 or more attempts which is was a 151.9 rating.

Up by 14 points at halftime, Mullens was verified on Twitter. After the game, Mullens received a very special phone call during an interview from Hall of Fame quarterback, Brett Favre.

Mullens truly had what most people call a “Cinderella Game,” the perfect game everyone wants as they are growing up.

SAINTS END RAMS WINNING STREAK

OKC’S WESTBROOK INJURED AGAIN

The Rams were defeated by the Saints, ending an eight-game winning streak. The Saints secured a 45–35 win for what looks to be an impressive season. New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees threw for 346 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. Jared Goff, quarterback for the Rams, threw for 391 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. The Saints now hold a seven game win streak after a 48-40 season opener loss to the Buccaneers.

Alabama continued their rampant SEC dominance on Saturday, November 3 after a 29-0 shutout against LSU at Tiger Stadium.

Potential Heisman winner Tua Tagovailoa had another stand out game – three touchdowns, 49 rushing yards, and three carries He was able to complete an impressive 44-yard touchdown run. Both teams return to the field November 17, with Alabama playing Citadel and LSU facing off against Rice.

During a game against the New Orleans Pelicans, Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook sustained an injury, requiring him to be carried to the locker room.

Westbrook’s knee has been a recurring issue, preventing him from playing in the first two OKC games of the season. The Thunder lost both of these games in the absence of Westbrook, giving fans reason to worry over the nature of his latest injury.

WANTED: PLATFORM FOR HEALTHY DISCUSSIONS OF DIFFERENCES by: Gian Luigi Zaninelli By the time this article is published the midterm elections will have finished. The plastic forests of campaign signs on the road to Oak Grove will have been removed, and the armies of volunteers canvasing America will have gone back to their normal lives. Some will do this in joy and others in despair on the basis of whether or not their candidates won and more broadly, whether their party will end up controlling Congress.

What will persist after the midterm is an uncomfortable level of nationwide political polarization, including at Oak Grove.

We pride ourselves in our shared identity as Warriors, but I worry that this identity is becoming increasingly fractured because of the differences between us. Warriors are people of many different religions, cultures, races, and, political views. Unfortunately, we have struggled to successfully provide a platform for the exchange of ideas. If we are to restore an inclusive and coherent identity to our schools, we must directly address the differences which often push us apart and learn to respect those with whom we disagree.

When running the Political Awareness Club, I came to understand that while many different

THOSE WITH WHOM WE DISAGREE” viewpoints are represented within our student body, the discussions we had on hot-button issues were frequently much too aggressive and intense to allow any but a small minority of zealous students to want to speak out. Even a print format, found in the Political Review I established, failed to yield any submissions. Worryingly, my colleague Landry Sutton’s Turning Point USA club was not approved to exist in an official capacity. It is not normal for a school composed of as many passionate and articulate individuals to have such a dearth of discourse. Oak Grove students pour themselves into service projects and mission work, but seem to forgo examining their reasoning for doing so in a rigorous manner. An environment without argument or contention is one where a dominant narrative or approach is able to continue unabated regardless of its merits. Bad ideas stick around when people don’t get to scrubbing. Oak Grove seems to lack the steel wool of critique necessary to remove the stains that have gradually accumulated on us over time.

Recognizing the diversity of opinion is one of the best ways to come to appreciate it. Many of the people I have enormous respect for are people with whom I disagree on virtually every major political and social issue. This is not to say that these views do not have much more meaning than say, whether you think Tom Brady is the GOAT. Political views are powerful reflections of

the values we hold closest to our hearts which are themselves central to who we are as people.

However, it is because of this that the extra effort needed to understand those who differ from us in these ways is so important. When we acknowledge to authenticity of our values, shared or not, we are acknowledging the authenticity of a central part of our shared humanity. Sadly, Oak Grove seems to struggle terribly with even this basic component of a healthy political environment.

The reasons for this are innumerable, and it would be dishonest to suggest that any one or two factors are responsible. Nonetheless, our fear of disagreement, authority, change, and having to engage with our peers on more than a superficial level, seem to be common drivers for the actions of individual people. I urge you to fearlessly criticize what needs to be critiqued.

What needs to be critiqued? That question rests solely on you. I urge you to make a sizable effort to understand the views of those you disagree with, if not to better empathize than to prepare yourself for disagreement, make a commitment to organizations that further political discourse. If we want our voices to be heard as loudly as the voices of intelligent, insightful, and honest people should be, we must also learn to listen.

SICK OF IT: MEDICAL DAYS SHOULD BE EXCUSED by: Landry Sutton Schools across the nation are on a mission to end chronic absenteeism. Chronic Absenteeism is defined as when a student misses an excessive amount of days of school without any real reason. While this is a practice that schools should be fighting, they are resorting to unreasonable attendance policies to combat it, which unfortunately end up hurting higher achieving students instead of helping lower achieving ones.

It is estimated that 7.5 million US students are chronically absent every year. In many states, including Mississippi, schools are given money based on their average attendance. This has led schools to try various methods, including some questionable ones, of preventing as many absences as possible.

For example, a California school district has decided to start messaging parents with an odd request after their students miss a day. They ask that the parents donate $47 to the school, claiming that’s how much money the state subtracts from the district’s annual budget when a student is absent.

Oak Grove High School and the Lamar County School District’s attendance policies, while not as crazy as the one mentioned above, have also proven themselves to be harsh and ineffective.

The Lamar County School District (LCSD), like every school district in Mississippi, fights for ev-

ery dollar it can from the state. This has led to the current absence policy in the district, which does not excuse medical days from counting against a student being exempt.

This policy is ineffective and stressful in multiple ways, and it has also proven to be dangerous. In a poll of OGHS students, an astounding 85 percent reported attending school even though they knew they were sick. This means that for the purpose of being exempt (achieving straight As and having no more than two absences), students will come to school ill and potentially contagious. During your typical flu-season, or possibly during an outbreak of a more serious illness, this could lead to a school wide outbreak of sickness, something which has happened at schools around the country in recent years. Not only are kids coming to school and infecting their classmates, many are also driving to school in a compromised condition, further putting their lives at risk all in the name of boosting district funding.

It is important to remember that funding isn’t based solely on attendance, as grades are also a factor. This is where the justification for the policy is derailed. Exemptions are a major motivator, especially for underclassmen, to work for all-As. All of this hard work can be ruined by a simple three day stint at home with the flu. Unsurprisingly, since a semester of effort can be so easily tossed aside by the school, the student is likely

to come back to school with a diminished desire to succeed — defeating the policy’s purpose of helping school funding.

Clearly, the policy needs to change. Just like the majority of American adults, kids need sick days too. It is time for the state of Mississippi to stop putting so much emphasis on attendance and look at other areas to base school funding on, as obviously (with Mississippi consistently having the worst schools in the nation) the current system doesn’t work. Ideally, students would be given as long as the need to recover from illnesses, surgeries, and maybe even mental health troubles, but that isn’t the only solution. A fair compromise would be to allow each student in the state two or three days of doctor verified forgiven sick days. If the state won’t budge on their policy, LCSD should take a stand and enact it anyway, as most would agree it is the right thing to do, and hopefully we would be joined by other districts in protest.

Brandon, Clinton, Pearl, and Northwest Rankin are among the many schools across the state of Mississippi that have been using the modified “A/B” block schedule.

This modified block schedule has given students the ability to gain skills they will need for the rest of their lives without all of the stress.

With the modified block schedule, students attend eight yearlong classes. Four classes meet on Mondays and Wednesdays, and the other four meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Some schedules allow for all classes to meet on Fridays, while others alternate four blocks every other Friday.. Although it may seem like a heavier workload for students, Power Hour still being in effect provides students with plenty of time to take breaks, catch up on work, and complete homework.

“I like having A&B day schedule,” Northwest Rankin student Shubham Patel said. “You get extra time to get more work done including homework and studying for tests. I think it does help because if you’re taking lots of AP or DC classes you are more likely to not stress a lot.”

Those who participate in sports and arts like football and band do not have to worry about not meeting everyday. Many electives are double-blocked during their competition season. This means they still get to meet every day and hold after school practices they may need.

High school is meant to prepare students for life after high school Since many students plan to attend college, adopting the same schedule colleges use helps do just that.

Since most college courses meet on alternating days, preparing students for not attending the same classes every day is beneficial. Students who feel they need to visit certain classes everyday to be successful can use Power Hour to get their fill.

“The students are old enough to handle the academic responsibilities,” Brandon High School band director Leigh Ann Ross said.

“It prepares them for the college lifestyle.”

With the current 4x4 block schedule Oak Grove uses, students may not be able to take certain courses due to the availability of the class and their current schedule. With the A/B schedule, all classes are year-long and available on A days and B days making them much more accessible.

The modified, A/B block scheduling is just as beneficial for teachers as it is for students. All of the core classes such as English, math, science, and history are respectively scheduled during similar blocks. Therefore, core class teachers often share the same planning block as their counterparts, so it is easier for them to collaborate together without having to stay after school.

To those who have not experienced a modified block schedule, it may seem overwhelming, pointless, or confusing. For those who have tried it at other schools, they realized the benefits offered by the college preparatory schedule.

Regardless of what people may say or believe, the idea of having a modified block “A/B” scheduling system is entirely as unorthodox as it is wasteful.

The indicated issue of implicating a new-styled scheduling system, which has been used by many other schools before, and to this day, has a hefty argument to bear.

One could argue that implementing this new schedule would benefit students in terms of homework or assignments, given that they would have an extra day before the next meeting of that class. This would decrease the stress of daily demands for each class. However, one can also argue the fact that students who are given extended time between classes tend to procrastinate that time and lose a sense of time-management in order to be ready for the next day.

I know, and I am sure many students would agree with me, when I work hard all week and have a test scheduled on the upcoming Monday, I choose to squander my time away all weekend instead of preparing for the test. This is simply because I have removed myself from the organization of school.

Having a day between a single class to work on another class’s scheduled work would completely unearth the ideals of constant organization that school is founded upon. The majority of teachers at

OGHS agree with this; a recent poll showed that over 70 percent of them believe that a modified block scheduling for A/Bdays would not be more beneficial than the current system.

School is supposed to be stressful, and it is supposed to be difficult.

That constant drive that is required to be successful is what teaches students how to live in the real world. As a senior, I have realized that dealing with the daily grind, semester after semester, is so rewarding in the end. To put in the work and come out on top is truly an inspiring feeling of accomplishment every 18 weeks at Oak Grove High School.

Classes are hard, sometimes the work seems monstrous, but knocking down each obstacle and preparing for the next one is such a crucial learning experience for when we graduate and move on.

When I graduate and go onto college my schedule will change, but OG has trained me to adapt to the scheduling. I am prepared for anything college throws at me, but adopting an modified block schedule at the school would demolish that experience.

Do I get to change jobs every other day?

Can I believe that students who acclimate themselves to an A/B schedule be prepared for the true daily schedule of life?

No. School trains me for life tomorrow, it does not train me to take a break every other day, it trains me to dig my heels in the ground and keep on pushing, however heavy the obstacle will be.

“HOW DO YOU BE A LIGHT IN AN ENVIRONMENT FULL OF PEOPLE WHO LOVE DARKNESS?” If you want to be a light, shine bright no matter what environment you are in! Be the best person you can be in any kind of situation, even if all you can do is stand quietly and nod.

Sometimes all people need is a little light in their life, but they do not know how to find it. A little light never hurt anybody! The night is best enjoyed when you can see the stars and moon shine back at you.

Not everyone needs a burning bright light, and that is okay. Sometimes people just feel a certain way, and there is no cure for it. Try to guide them through it as best as you can, even if you need to dim the lights so they can find their way through on their own.

Do what you think is best for every situation. Always ask the people around you if they want the light first before shining it in their face. Some people have stayed in the darkness for so long that bringing light into their life all of a sudden will make them shy away and turn to dust. Make sure to ease the light in instead of blinding them..

Try to do the best you can to be a light for everybody’s darkness, but make sure to be careful as to not burn anybody on the way.

SHELBY SUTTON: OAK GROVE ALUMNA MAKES MAGIC

Oak Grove Alumna Shelby Sutton is making magic as a performer at Disney World.

Sutton, who graduated in 2015, has been dancing for 19 years. A few credits to her name include a World Title in Spain and two years of dancing on the Miss Mississippi pageant stage.

“I currently work in the Festival of Fantasy Parade, Fantasmic, and the Castle Show,” Sutton said.

Sutton said the most challenging part of work at Disney is the scheduling.

“The hours are kind of crazy. I don’t think people realize that. For instance, I finished work at 1 am yesterday, and I am already going

back today at 11. I think people assume that after they leave the park, everyone else does. The lights in Magic Kingdom never go off. People are working 24/7 to maintain the parks.”

Prep time for each show depends on which one Sutton is performing in that day.

“Fantasmic takes an hour, and the Castle show takes 15 minutes.”

Does working in the most magical place on Earth ever make the magic disappear?

“It has its moments where it gets repetitive because everything works the exact same way everyday, but the guests that come in do not realize how much impact they have on making the magic.”

she met just days ago who was dressed up as Carl from Disney’s Up – complete with balloons and a walker.

“The guests can really change our view on Disney without realizing it.”

Sutton’s favorite park is Hollywood Studios, where she enjoys the swing music, lights and rides.

In addition to the salary and opportunity, working for Disney comes with its perks.

“My family can come for free. We also get into Disneyland and any Disney park free. My friends and I are going to Disneyland in January,” she said.

Sutton strongly encourages students who are inspired to work at Disney to follow their dreams

through Disney’s College Program.

The College Program is a five to seven month program in which students can work in the parks, learning lifelong skills, all while earning college credit.

“You are not limited to any of the jobs with the College Program. You still get the opportunity to be a performer if that’s what you are interested in. It is a big commitment, but it is also the most magical experience. I can’t go home for holidays because Disney is open, but with the College Program it isn’t as demanding. If you really need some magic in your life it is the place to go.”

Sutton truly loves her job with Disney and sees a big future of continued employment with the company.

“I plan on staying a little longer.

There are a lot of new shows rolling out next year for Disney’s 50th anniversary. I plan on auditioning for Disney Cruise Line that will open out of New Orleans. The opportunities Disney brings are amazing. I couldn’t stand on the most photographed location in the world, the castle stage, and perform if it were not for Disney. I get to do what I have trained to do my whole life every day in Disney. I can’t even describe it.”

KEG AND BARREL TAPS INTO SUCCESS IN OAK GROVE

Keg and Barrel opened a new restaurant in the old Willy T’s location in Oak Grove. Keg and Barrel II opened officially on October 26, with the grand opening occuring on November 1. It is located across the street from the food-court entrance of Turtle Creek Mall, next to Rio Grande.

The original restaurant boasted a youthful atmosphere for the college student crowd, as the building included two bars, one indoor and one outdoor, small sitting areas, and styled with southern-traditional decor. The new Keg and Barrel offers a much more family-oriented environment, having been located closer to neighborhoods, but still attracts the young crowd as it sits near a brand new apartment complex.

As you walk inside the restaurant you are greeted by a hostess who seats you either inside or outside upon request or you can sit at the bar freely. The layout is very open compared to the original Keg, having a southern home style with bright colors and open walls decorated in a much more modern fashion. The atmosphere is very inviting, having TVs in every corner, with music playing and a warm glow of lighting. Keg and Barrel II uses as much seatable space as possible.

By taking out half of the original Willy T’s parking lot in the front, the restaurant is able to use it instead

as an outdoor seating area with an open outdoor bar attached to the main building. It also contains much larger seating areas inside, having a room that could fit up to 30 people in as a venue of some birthday party or event.

My personal experience was amazing, I have eaten at the original Keg multiple times and was very pleased with the service at the new one. I walked in and was greeted by two very nice hostesses who were eager to seat me but not in a hurriedly fashion. The place was busy for a Tuesday night, and I even went around five o’clock, a relatively early time for dinner rush. I was happy to find that they handed me the same menu as the original Keg, which is famous for its southern cooking.

The service was fast and polite, and I was in and out in under an hour.

However, I would gladly sit there for many more, as the environment was very friendly, especially if an important sporting event was on tv, or if I was with a large group.

I was glad to see the original Keg and Barrel vibe, but the modern twist and taste here and there was a welcomed upgrade. I never felt uncomfortable, but I hope to maybe see more families dingin here, as it still maintains that younger, collegeaged student vibe. The location is easy to access, due to it not being directly on any busy road, and I hope people find it as inviting and enjoyable as I did when turning into the new restaurant’s parking lot.

CATCHING UP WITH SOME OLD FRIENDS IN NEW PLACES by: Kelsey Terrell

Four former Oak Grove students now attend the Mississippi School of Math and Science and the Mississippi School of Arts where they happy, healthy, and prosperous.

Juniors Xavier Lucas-Cooper and Olivia Viguerie currently attend the Mississippi School of Math and Science (MSMS), in Columbus, and Kathy Nguyen and Emma Chisolm, also juniors, attend the Mississippi School of the Arts (MSA), in Brookhaven.

The new day-to-day lives for the former Oak Grove students include a number of adjustments from their lives in Hattiesburg.

“I wake up, and I have to sign in before 7:45,” Nguyen said “I have normal classes and two art classes a day. I’m always checking the calendar to see when club meetings are and what kind of events are go-

ing on. I’m able to do more since I live on campus.”

“Right now my day to day includes going to class, doing homework, painting/drawing, and working on our yearly haunted house until around 9 at night,” Chisolm said.

In addition to the specialized and unique curriculums the students receive, they value the learning opportunities and encouragement they receive from their new friends and classmates.

“Here I feel accepted, and I’m able to hold a meaningful conversation with anyone,” Chisolm said “I will probably meet a group of artists, who are passionate about their art, once in my life. I am so fortunate to meet them and build strong bonds with them.”

MSMS and MSA are molding students for prosperity and preparing them for adulthood by integrating

aspects of “the real world” into student culture.

“MSMS is not only allowing me to ease into a bit of the independence I will have to be used to in the future, but also challenging me to think outside the box and try to understand why things around me work as they do,” Viguerie said “Rather that simply preparing me for state tests, they help me push beyond what is required of me, giving me skills that will help me not only in college but beyond.”

Attending the two schools has changed the students for the better.

“I know MSMS has changed me,” Viguerie said. “I’m told it’s obvious, but I think the difference is that I’m generally happy here. The environment is high demand, but the stress isn’t draining. MSMS has made me feel free in ways that I hadn’t before. I no longer feel like I am in a competition, because my only com-

petition is myself. It’s refreshing, and honestly, energizing.”

“I’ve been able to make actual changes within myself. I’ve been growing as a person and it shows in my art as well,” Nguyen said “I’ve been more confident in how I approach people. I’m taking criticism from my peers and am incorporating it into my daily life. I’m learning more and more about my peers.”

“I am a lot more of an open person now than I have ever been,” Lucas-Cooper said “I guess that is due to the fact that the school only holds about 200 students, so you have time to get to know everybody – even if you don’t want to. It has also helped me to manage my time better and to prioritize assignments based on importance. In my opinion, everyone who attends this school is going to change. Almost always for the better.”

Step 6: Involve others You are going to need help as you get closer to claiming them as your own. Get your friends to mention your name around them. Get close to his/her friends, and start inviting yourself to their parties or hangout sessions.

Step 7: Eliminate competition At this point, you have had dibs since the beginning of this obsession. To any girls/guys who are in their classes, you need to threaten them out of talking to your boo. This tactic will for sure scare them out of even talking to your person.

ENTERTAINMENT

OG DRAMA DEPARTMENT PRESENTS THE AXEMAN’S REQUIEM by: Tung Pierce

The Oak Grove High School Theatre Department debuted their show The Axeman’s Requiem Thursday, November 8 with a coffee and dessert performance.

“This is a really difficult show,” director Suzanne Allmon said, “There are a lot of things in it.

There’s a lot of research be-

cause there’s creatures and characters that are not real, and it’s a really big cast. There’s 44 cast and crew altogether, and they’re having to build a couple of houses and things. They’ve been working really hard, and I think it’s going to be a really good show.”

The show is a mixture of romance and voodoo, with a twist of surprise, led by seniors Emmie Perkins and Andrew O’Quinn.

“It is set in New Orleans in 1920 in the middle of Mardi Gras,” Allmon said. “It is about a guy named Thomas who is a jazz

musician. He is in love with a girl named Elise. It is about the struggles they go through for love

and what are they willing to do for love.”

The cast of the theatre department are working hard to create a magical world filled with amazing characters.

“Since a lot of our characters are voodoo related, and they’re from New Orleans, a lot of people had to do a lot of background research,” Perkins said, “I’m kinda creating my character from the ground up. It has been a little difficult for me to try to figure out who my character is, but that comes in all of us writing a character analysis and really researching our characters in the city of New Orleans and how people lived in the 1920s.”

The cast and crew are excited to be able to finally bring the show to life and share the mysterious adventure with others.

“I like giving a chance to just share the story with other people and let them experience what we experience every day,” O’Quinn said.

“We want to be able to show that we love it to other people,” Perkins said.

While the excitement of the show is always fun and thrilling, the seniors also dread the day when it comes to an end for them.

“It’s bittersweet,” O’Quinn said.

“Of course, I love doing this, and I love that I get to do it every year. I hate that this is our last chance that I get to do this, but it’s my senior year. I’m really loving this role, and I’m really loving this show. I think it’s a really good way to close out my theatre experience.”

“It’s definitely more bitter than it is sweet,” Perkins said, “I love the aspect of competition, so I really am excited to get into that side of drama, but at the same time I don’t want it to get here because that means that we’re nearing the end.”

The Axeman’s Requiem will be performed for a few days in Oak Grove High School’s Performing Arts Center before making it’s trip into competition.

“We would love for everyone to come out and see the show,” Allmon said. “On November 9 and 15 the show will start at 7:00, and tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students.”

MAMMA MIA! DANCES INTO HATTIESBURG THIS MONTH by: Hermine Granberry

Hattiesburg Civic Light Opera will present Mamma Mia! downtown at the Hattiesburg Saenger Theatre November 15-17 at 7:30 p.m. and November 18 at 2 p.m.

Lindsay Williams is directing Mamma Mia!, with Marc Rivet serving as musical director. The musical has a cast of more than 30 people with ages ranging from six to 40 years old.

“The singing and dancing in the musical are so much fun,” HCLO president and Mamma Mia! stage manager Jenny Bolster said. “It really makes for a fun show!”

Featuring the songs from ABBA, Mamma Mia! tells the story of Sophie, a young woman searching for her dad before her wedding day.

Her search through her mother’s past leads to three possible dads who arrive the day before her wedding.

“I’ve seen some of the rehearsals

for Mamma Mia!,” Bolster said. “All of the numbers and dances are so much fun and funny, too! The cast has become very close working on this show.”

The audience also has the chance to take a home a piece of Mamma Mia!. Sophie wears a pearl jewelry set that represents the love between her groom and her. Raffle tickets for Sophie’s jewelry are $5 a piece, or $20 for five tickets, and can be purchased either online or at the show. The drawing will be held at the final performance on Sunday, November 18. The winner does not have to be present to win.

HCLO, now in its 43rd season, has produced more than 120 shows for the Pine Belt community. Founded in 1976, HCLO not only brings art and theatre to Hattiesburg audiences, but also provides a community for people to be a part of theatre.

“Everyone in the community is able to be a part of the production through various ways,” Bolster

said. “People can join the orchestra, work backstage, help with fundraising – really anything. HCLO is for everyone who appreciates the arts.”

The cast of Mamma Mia! is a perfect example of Hattiesburg’s theatre community.

“Everyone has put so much hard work into this show,” Bolster said.

“It’s going to really make for a fun and special time for the audience.”

Tickets are available on the HCLO website and the Saenger Theatre box office.

HCLO’s Mamma Mia! will be the first production of the musical in this area since the rights were released last May. The 2018-19 season began with The Rocky Horror Show: The Musical in September and will continue with Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Oliver! in the spring.

“HCLO holds open auditions for its shows,” Bolster said. “It brings together people who may not be professional actors, but love theatre.”

Up and coming musician Billie Eilish has taken the world by storm one song at a time. Fans all over the world have begun following the young singer known for her electropop style of music. At the young age of 16, Eilish is already perfroming sold out tours, has more than 750 million streams worldwide on Spotify, and released a successful, debut single, “Ocean Eyes.”

This haunting debut ballad is to thank for Eilish’s new-found stardom.

Written by her brother, a singer himself, “Ocean Eyes” was originally intended for use at the studio where she danced. Instead Eilish published it on Soundcloud, where it took off – generating over 2 million streams.

Eilish’s angelic vocals throughout “Ocean Eyes” juxtapose the dark themes of her lyrics.

Eilish claims she feels older than 16 and does not let people discredit her due to her age. When asked about her age in an interview by Harper’s Bazaar, Eilish said “Why does my age define me? Usually if no one directly asks me my age I am not going to say it.”

Eilish has an unconventional style, making a name for herself as an artist. Adorned with baggy sweat pants and silver hair, she proves that she is not a typical popstar. “I just like dressing out of my comfort zone. I want to dress in a way that if I was in a room full of people wearing regular clothes, I would be like, ‘Oh, I bet everyone’s looking at me.’” Eilish said.

Respectfully, Eilish gives praise to her fans, saying, “It’s really special for me. I don’t like to call them my fans because they’re my family; they’re the only reason I’m anything.” As a 16 year old, she shows an incredible mature and humble attitude towards fame.

Her newest single, “When The Party’s Over,” is my favorite song she has released so far. Written once again by her older brother Finneas, the heartbreaking ballad draws up many emotions for listeners. Finneas commented on the difficulty level of the song’s creation saying “This song is so important to us. After hundreds and hundreds of vocal layers later, I’m so proud of what we ended up with and I hope you love it as much as we do.”

The layering of vocals and the unique writing of the song shows that a lot of

Bohemian Rhapsody is a powerful celebration of the rock band Queen, their iconic music, and lead singer Freddie Mercury, who revolutionized entertainment with his flamboyant personality. The film follows the rise of Queen from their beginning to their iconic Live Aid concert at Wembley Stadium.

Mercury’s life is the focal point, but fans will also be delighted by the scenes offering insight into the creation of enduring Queen classics such as “We Will Rock You,” “Another One Bites The Dust,” and of course, the incomparable “Bohemian Rhapsody” itself.

There was an unsatisfactory amount of time involving Mercury’s relationship with Mary Austin (Lucy Boynton) that could have better been spent focusing more on his other relationships. The darker moments of his life and his diagnosis of AIDS felt barely touched with a quiet, but chilling montage.

If looking for a film that accurately depicts Mercury’s private life, and Queen’s story, you will probably be disappointed. The film tries its hardest to paint Mercury and his band in the best light possible – focusing on the band’s legacy and key moments of their success and music.

The movie would have fallen flat without its leading man Rami Malek and his paramount recreation of Freddie Mercury. Malek flawlessly captured not only the lead singer’s on-stage bravado but also the vulnerability of his private persona. His stellar performance could put him in contention for an Oscar.

While the script only gives viewers a surface-level look at the lives of the musicians, the dialogue is tight and quite often hilarious, with Malek giving a lot of the film’s great zingers and one-liners. Despite having protruding prosthetic teeth to the point of distraction, Malek was compelling and thrilling to watch.

time and thought went into the making of it. Eilish’s full album is set to release early 2019. Eilish puts powerful meaning behind every word that she sings. After listening to Eilish, one can understand why she is taking the entertainment world by storm.

Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the world’s largest parade, will take place Thursday, November 22 at 8 a.m. central time.

The annual parade, which takes place in New York City, is going on its 94 year.

The parade has been televised by NBC since 1952 and has continued since.

Employees of Macy’s department store have the option to march in the parade along with other iconic parade balloons and performers.

Thanksgiving National Dog Show “The National Dog Show Presented by Purina” celebrates America’s love of man’s best friend. The event, hosted by the Kennel Club of Philadelphia, airs Thanksgiving on NBC at 12 pm. The 16th edition of the annual telecast will showcase over two thousand purebred canines competing for the title “Best in Show.” In order to win the title, a dog must first be judged the best of its same breed competing in the show. $20,000 is awarded to the “Best in Show,” along with the prestigious title.

NBC broadcasted a celebration show, entitled “A Very Wicked Halloween: Celebrating 15 Years on Broadway” on October 29. The show included numbers by infamous Elphaba and Glinda actresses Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth. Many other cast members joined them to perform some of the shows most famous songs, such as Ariana Grande.

The 2018 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will take place at 9 am on November 22.

Travelling two and a half miles in 90 minutes, the parade will be watched by 3.5 million people lining the streets of NYC and 50 million viewers at home. The parade will feature performances by Broadway musical casts, 29 balloons, 27 floats, 33 groups of clowns, 12 marching bands, and numerous cheerleaders and dancers. Tune in to NBC to watch.

On November 9, The Grinch, starring Pharrell Williams and Cameron Seely, will begin playing in theaters nationwide in 3D and IMAX. The majority of the classic, heart-warming story of the Grinch, Cindy-Lou-Who, and Whoville will stay the same. However, due to advancements in animation and film technology, the new release will look significantly different than the 1966 and 2000 releases. The Grinch’s soundtrack will feature songs by Tyler, the Creator.
