David Ogilvie left Scotland at the age of 18 to follow his dream of playing professional golf. He was initially asked to join a golf club in Florida, but while in route he traveled through Augusta, where they had a 9-hole golf course - Bon Air Golf Club. Ogilvie was so impressed with the area and challenge, he decided to settle in Augusta.

HISTORY OF

“THE PATCH”

Ogilvie further developed the existing Bon Air Golf club with Dr. William Henry Harrison into an 18-hole course - the first in Augusta. The club was later renamed and is nowadays known as Augusta Country Club. In 1928, Ogilvie designed the Augusta Municipal Golf Course (AMGC), and you can still see the Ogilvie influence through its design.

The nickname, “The Patch,” has been attached to the golf course since the original land was used as a nursery. Several legendary caddies at the Masters are a major part of the Patch’s history, including the legendary PGA Tour professional, Jim Dent.

THE

RENOVATION Augusta, GA has a rich history of military service and is the location for Ft. Gordon, a major Army installation. Already recognized as the mecca for golf, Augusta is honoring these two major attributes to bring a new destination golf course to the city, built by veterans. The AMGC will be constructed as a signature, fully ADA compliant golf course designed as one of the most accessible golf facilities in the nation.

Phase I will involve the design, construction, and grow-in of the front nine of the AMGC. This will include the complete 18-hole course design and layout, landscape design and engineering, in addition to the construction of tees, greens, bunkers, turf, irrigation, drainage, cart paths, and bridges. Phase II will involve the design, construction, and grow-in of the back nine of and the renovation of the practice tee and green areas.

Promoting equality through the game of golf will be the cornerstone of the finished project, expanding opportunities for AMGC members, the general public, and people of all-abilities to learn, participate, and enjoy America’s favorite sport. The renovated course will provide new features that did not previously exist for friendly competition including multi-tiered tees, combined natural and synthetic turf areas, and accessible bunkers and pathways.

Future considerations for a world-class golf training center and inclusive golf programs will address ADA compliance for accommodations including adaptive equipment and carts. In keeping with Augusta’s universal brand as the golf mecca, The Warrior Alliance envisions hosting tournaments for veterans with disabilities, with the goal of attracting attendees and all-abilities golf associations from around the world.

The renovation, design and construction will be

managed by golf industry experts and incorporate Operation Double Eagle cohorts to participate in the project as part of the work-site apprenticeship program. The Warrior Apprenticeship provides real-world experience that enable former military service members to work alongside civilians and demonstrate their new career skills.

ACCESSIBILITY Adaptive golf will be a course signature with ADA compliant design including all-abilities tee areas and features accommodations for bunkers, paths, and greens. The driving range and instruction center will be wheelchair-accessible with synthetic tee areas designed to make access easy and golf enjoyable.

C O N S E R VAT I O N As stewards of conservation, the new golf course will feature numerous environmental improvements for erosion control, water consumption, and beautification. Capital funds will go towards developing more efficient use of natural resources, including sediment control, sustainable turf grasses, new landscaping, trees and shrubs, and state-of-the art irrigation.

Synthetic turf in select areas will reduce maintenance costs and add to the overall accessibility for golfers.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT The renovated facility will provide a new golf experience, unique to the Augusta community, and enrich healthy lifestyles for all area residents. The history of the game will be honored as the AMGC becomes a revitalized center for Augusta social, cultural, and environmental improvements.

The facility will support a strong, diverse community by making the course accessible to golfers of all income levels, and will offer youth and people with disabilities the opportunity to learn the game of golf through specialized programming.

GROW THE GAME We will embrace the guidelines set forth by the PGA of America for growing the game of golf by increasing access for players of all levels through on-site adaptive golf academy instruction and create a golf course design for future generations - designed to maximize player experience, fun and scoring.
