New Hampshire’s Top FHA, VA Lenders, Ranked Loans Are Key Tools for First-Time Buyers BY JAMES SANNA REGISTRY REVIEW STAFF

W

hile Federal Housing Administration and Veterans Affairs loans may be challenging for lenders to issue, they can be key tools for opening the dream of homeownership up to a wider range of people. For the second year in a row, The Warren Group is reporting the top lenders for FHA loans, as well as VA loans, home equity lines of credit and adjustable-rate mortgages in New Hampshire. The rankings include banks, credit unions and mortgage companies and are based on loan volumes in 2019. While they have different qualification requirements, both VA and FHA loans typically allow borrowers to put very little money down, or none at all, on a mortgage. Various government agencies then fill in the gaps so banks can originate the mortgage and still meet their underwriting standards. They also allow borrowers with lower credit scores to qualify for loans, and may have other advantages, such as offering seller credits to help borrowers cover closing costs, which can be thousands of dollars. Although both are lenient, VA loans are considered to have the easiest qualification standards; they also require the borrower to be a veteran with a valid cer-

The top FHA lender statewide among banks, for the second year in a row, was USAA Federal Savings Bank; among credit unions it was St. Mary’s Bank; and among mortgage companies, it was Residential Mortgage Services Inc. USAA also took the top VA lender spot for the second year, with Navy Federal Credit Union doing the same among credit unions.
