Crime Line by: Senior Constable Ian Henderson

The last week could be described as The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, and so here is a summary of what has taken place since 24th March in Wanaka: Wanaka Police are still getting reports of iPhone thefts in the local bars. So look after your valuables or have a mate keep an eye on your stuff if you wander away. The trend will get worse when winter is here. A good number of locals attended the "Wanaka Community Patrol" meeting organized by Constable Mike Thomas, and this is very pleasing to see. This could be up and running by July 1st. A local man was arrested when he breached his court bail conditions on 28th March. Wanaka Police are asking for help from the public to identify the nude male reported swimming at the reserve in Albert Town where the Hawea River flows into the Clutha. He was last seen wearing a red and white baseball cap on the 28th March. On the night of 30th March we were asked to assist in the manhunt for the male who severely injured two female hitch-hikers on the West Coast while driving a stolen 4WD. Our staff spent some hours in the Makarora area at a road block in order to prevent the male offender travelling through to the Wanaka area. It appears that this nasty piece of work is now in custody after a five hour standoff near Fox Glacier and now faces many serious charges. On 31st March a tradesman working locally had his driver license suspended for 28 days and his car impounded due to a serious driving offence. He will appear in Court later in April. Also today I attended two incidents in the Cardrona Valley involving wandering stock. This is a further reminder for all farmers to check fences and gates all year round. Police have noticed that a number of cyclists are not wearing helmets and do not have cycle lighting at night time. Also the are far too many vehicle drivers using cell phones. So along with these; seatbelts, speed and driving safely at intersections, will all be a focus for us for the next few months. With daylight saving almost here, start thinking about pre-winter vehicle checks too. Have a safe week.
