COMMEMORATION PROJECTS

Ph: 03 441 3458 OR 027 705 0040 E: wanaka@asplundh.co.nz www.asplundh.co.nz

This year it will be 100 years since the First World War began. There are many commemorative projects throughout New Zealand and worldwide. The First World War Centenary Quilt – this is a commemorative project with an inspired aim – remembering those who died in World War 1 while also helping injured soldiers today. The quilt will be a collaborative effort, made of fabric patches, each embroidered with the name of a member of the Commonwealth forces of the war who did not return home. Members of Wanaka Genealogy Group thought it would be fitting to have some New Zealand and Australian names represented on the quilt. To join in, the minimum donation will be $10. You will receive a centenary quilt pack, with full instructions. If you would like to stitch a square, you could choose to remember the name of a fallen ancestor or

perhaps someone listed on your local community memorial or simply embroider a name on someone else’s behalf. All profits will be divided equally between Help for Heroes and Q4IS (Quilts for injured soldiers) in the U.K. To obtain your square - phone Louise on 443 8977 “Discovering Anzacs” – This is a new website that The National Archives of Australia and Archives New Zealand are working together to build. It will have a unique profile of every Anzac who enlisted in World War 1, linked to their service record. You can help tell the story of Australia and New Zealand during the war by building on profiles and adding your own family stories, photos or details of service. For information on these and other projects plus great tips on how to trace your WW1 military ancestor, check out our display in Wanaka library throughout April.
