Welcome to the 2024–2025 Edition of The Art of Walker
A CELEBRATION OF VISUAL, MUSICAL AND DRAMATIC ARTS AT THE WALKER SCHOOL
At The Walker School, the Arts are more than just a subject — they are a vital part of how our students express themselves, explore their passions and connect with the world around them. This year’s edition of The Art of Walker is a tribute to the creativity, dedication and joy that our students bring to every performance, brushstroke and composition.
Inside these pages, you will find a vibrant collection of student artwork created across all grade levels, showcasing a variety of media, techniques and personal styles. From compelling visual pieces to stirring performances in music and drama, each contribution reflects the unique voice and vision of its creator.
In addition to a gallery of student artwork, this publication offers snapshots of our music and theatre programs — from inspiring orchestral moments and dynamic ensemble work to powerful stage performances that brought stories to life. These glimpses remind us of the power of the Arts to build confidence, foster collaboration and spark imagination.
We are immensely proud of our students and grateful to our dedicated faculty who guide and nurture their growth. As you turn each page, we invite you to celebrate not just the finished products, but the process, passion and persistence behind them as well. Enjoy the journey through a year of artistic expression at The Walker School.

JULIANNA THOMAS
UPPER SCHOOL
VISUAL ARTS TEACHER
Upper School Visual Arts Teacher
Juliana Thomas has been with Walker for seven years, where she has held the position of Upper School Visual Arts teacher. Much loved by her students, Ms. Thomas, is always busy and full of enthusiasm for what she does.
Her classroom never seems to be empty as the students seem to gravitate to her space.
I feel close to my unconscious, which is why my studio feels like home. There, I can focus on my thoughts, dreams and spirit. Growing up surrounded by art, I was influenced by my parents, both artists. My mother taught me to draw early on. In high school, I thrived as an artist, earning several awards. later earned my BFA at GSU, where I began my formal training and learned to view art as productbased. It wasn’t until I started teaching art that I recognized the value of process, something I hadn’t fully appreciated until the past 23 years.”

MORGAN MURRAY
Morgan Murray, an 11th grader, submitted a logo design for the National Art Honor Society. Her design was selected to be featured on NAEA merchandise for teachers and students and received acknowledgement on the National Art Honor Society’s website and NAEA’s social media platforms. YOHARA CANTU AND SAVANNAH KRAAL
Yohara, Savannah and other Upper School students have been working on a “monster” collaboration with the Pre-Kindergarten students at the Primary School. The Pre-K students drew a monster from their imagination, and the Upper School students were tasked with bringing their creations to life in the form of a clay sculpture. Yohara is pictured with her clay sculpture, which has been built by hand. We caught her as she meticulously applied underglaze to the piece in preparation for its second and final firing in the kiln.

Addi works on her piece during Art on the Plaza while allowing Upper and Middle School students to watch and ask questions about her process and the project itself. In the piece, a truck is pictured, one that has travelled through generations of her family. Now owned by her father, it originally belonged to her grandfather.

JEFF DOMKE
MIDDLE & UPPER SCHOOL
ART TEACHER
My mind is a whirlwind of ideas, constantly buzzing with creativity. both a blessing and a challenge!
Whether exploring visual arts, performance or music, my passion for learning new techniques keeps me energized. With over 30 years of experience, I began as a graphic designer before becoming a professional puppeteer and teaching artist. My puppetry journey kicked off at Walt Disney World Resort and expanded into children’s television shows broadcast worldwide. Later, I joined the Education Department at the Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta, where I developed programs exploring the history of puppetry and its cultural significance. I designed countless puppet designs for students of all ages and led workshops globally, including at the National Puppetry Festival and The Bahrain Summer Festival. In 2023, I had the opportunity to study Commedia dell ‘Arte and puppetry with a master puppeteer in Bologna, Italy.

Now, in my first year at The Walker School, I truly cherish my time with the students and community here. Building long-lasting relationships with students and faculty is a refreshing change from years of short engagements with students. I love the supportive community here and the freedom teachers have.
There are no mistakes in Zentangle, so there is no need for an eraser. If you do not like the look of a stroke you have made, it then becomes only an opportunity to create a new tangle, or transform it using an old trusty pattern. A Zentangle tile is meant to be a surprise that unfolds before the creator’s eyes, one stroke at a time.”

Founded in 2008, we volunteer our time, resources and creative energy to enrich all arts programs at the school. We invite you to join us at our events throughout the 2025-2026 school year. Shown here are some of the events that POTA has supported.
POTA Mask Party. In support of the fantastic Mardi Gras-themed WSA Parent Soirée, we invited parents to make masks for the event.
Ever-changing decorations in the Coca-Cola Auditorium. Several times a year POTA volunteers help decorate the stage and surrounding area as a backdrop to Band, Chorus and Orchestra concerts, as well as the Lower School Annual Showcase.
Twice a year, the Patrons of the Arts hosts a breakfast for all Middle School and Upper School Arts students.

DR. KYNA ELLIOTT
ORCHESTRA DIRECTOR, THE WALKER SCHOOL
Dr. Kyna Elliott brings a wealth of experience and a global perspective to her role as Orchestra Director at The Walker School. With a distinguished career spanning middle and high schools, independent institutions, and universities across the U.S. and Europe, she has dedicated her life to the transformative power of the arts. She has served as Head of Music and Fine Arts in both Cambridge and London and has taught at the university level, shaping the next generation of musicians and educators.
As an international teaching artist, Dr. Elliott has also led meaningful arts initiatives in the Middle East, developing creative programs to help refugee children and adults heal from post-war trauma. Her commitment to music as both a craft and a force for good shines through in all she does.
At The Walker School, Dr. Elliott leads all Middle and Upper School string orchestras, inspiring students to reach new heights. Under her direction, students have performed at iconic venues including Carnegie Hall, the Sydney Opera House and the Georgia All-State Orchestra, with many going on to prestigious programs at institutions such as the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Indiana University and Boston University. The orchestras consistently earn top honors at competitions and festivals, reflecting both the talent of the students and Dr. Elliott’s exceptional leadership.
Looking ahead, Dr. Elliott shares her excitement for the upcoming school year: “Next year is shaping up to be an incredible journey for our orchestra students. We’re thrilled to welcome electric violinist Tracy Silverman — described by the BBC as ‘the greatest living exponent of the electric violin’ — who will work with our students on alternative styles of playing. We’ll also perform at a music festival at Dollywood, and embark on an international trip to the UK, during which students will visit the Cambridge campus where I once taught, and perform alongside the University of Chichester’s orchestra and city symphony. More exciting events are in the works, and I remain committed to creating opportunities that highlight our strings program and enrich the Walker community through music.”
Dr. Elliott’s dedication to artistic excellence and student growth continues to elevate the fine arts at The Walker School, making her an inspiring leader and cherished member of the community.
FEATURED STUDENT: IRIS LIU
Congratulations to senior Iris Liu, who was recently honored with a win at the WorldStrides Performing Arts Festival as a nominee for the prestigious Ovation Award. Nominated by Dr. Kyna Elliott, Walker’s Orchestra Director, Iris stood out among a talented field of participants for her exceptional musicianship and dedication to the orchestra program.
A gifted violist, Iris is known not only for her musical talent but also for her inspiring presence within the ensemble. “Iris Liu stood out among all who attended the festival,” Dr. Elliott said. “She brings unwavering support to the orchestra and radiates a joy for making music that uplifts everyone around her.”
Iris’ ability to lead with humility, encourage her peers and foster a culture of excellence makes her a truly special part of The Walker School community. Her passion for the art of music has left a lasting impact, and it has been an absolute joy to watch her grow and thrive.

Also included are some moments captured during concerts, plays, musicals and drama performances throughout the year. Although this is a mere glimpse into hours and hours of work that the students and faculty put their whole hearts into, hope you have enjoyed this short journey back in time.
Georgia O’Keeffe once said “I found I could say things with color and shapes that couldn’t say any other way — things had no words for.” hope you have enjoyed this glimpse into the heart and hard work the students and faculty have dedicated to the Arts throughout this year. Many thanks to the Art Faculty and the Students who helped put this together, and to the Walker Communications and Marketing team for bringing it to fruition.
