Steve Anstett embodies community service through his multi-faceted volunteer work with the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle and beyond. For several years, Steve has been making a tangible difference in the lives of local families and children

Steve plays a key role in the Backpack Buddies program, which delivers food every other week to Chatham County schools. This vital program provides students with discreet bags of food they can take home for weekends, ensuring no child goes hungry when school meals aren't available. Steve's leadership extends beyond his own participation he recruited three neighbors to join the effort, and now two volunteers handle each delivery. The program's impact resonates throughout the schools, with educators consistently sharing how much difference these food deliveries make in their students' lives. When Durham Public Schools needs additional support for their Backpack Buddies routes, Steve jumps in to help

Steve also volunteers with his church's mobile market on the third Saturday of each month, helping distribute food boxes including fresh produce to 70 families and 60 shut-ins. This program ensures that both mobile families and homebound community members have access to nutritious food.

Beyond food security, Steve coordinates a neighborhood reading buddy program at a local elementary school. This initiative involves 40 volunteers who rotate tutoring students twice weekly throughout the school year Steve hopes to expand this successful program to additional schools and recruit even more volunteer tutors.

What drives Steve's extensive volunteer work? He finds deep fulfillment in connecting with the people he serves teachers, guidance counselors, and community members who validate the importance of his work. Steve is passionate about recruiting others to join volunteer efforts, using his enthusiasm to inspire neighbors and friends to serve their community.

Steve's dedication demonstrates how one person's commitment can create ripple effects throughout the community, inspiring others to get involved and making a lasting impact on countless lives.
