Starting gates fill for election races

BY WAYNE CAMPBELL for the VOICE Rev. Paul MacNeil is breathing easier after Nomination Day last Friday.

The candidate for the Niagara District Catholic School Board stood unopposed.

His is one of two acclamations in Pelham. The other is Derrick Fournier on the French public school board. “I’m absolutely elated to be acclaimed in the school board election, and I’m looking forward to another four years of service to Niagara Catholic,� said MacNeil, pastor of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Fenwick.

Pelham’s voters on Election Day, Monday, Oct. 27, will have choices for Mayor, for Ward 1, Ward 2 and Ward 3 councillors, for regional councillor and for the District School Board of Niagara.

Last minute entries on Friday created contests for almost all Pelham positions.

All town council incumbents -- Mayor Dave Augustyn, Ward 1 councillors Richard Rybiak and James Lane, Ward 2 councillors Gary Accursi and Catherine King, and, Ward 3 councillors John Durley and Peter Papp -- are seeking re-election.

Two newcomers, Mark Bay and Zachary Junkin, will

try to unseat Augustyn.

In Ward 1, Marvin Junkin, Zachary’s father, makes it a three-way contest with Rybiak and Lane for two seats.

Tara Druzina, who had filed nomination papers, withdrew on Sept. 11.

In Ward 2, Larry Frost, Justin O’Donnell and Andrew Robertson will fence with Accursi and King for two seats.

In Ward 3, last minute nominees Wally Braun and Bill Heska made it a four-way with Durley and Papp for two seats.

For regional councillor, incumbent Brian Baty now has two challengers: James Inman and Anthony Annuziata.

Dale Ann Robinson, the incumbent trustee for District School Board of Niagara, will compete with John Piccolo .

In the French Separate school board contest, Wafkin Abadir will oppose Jules Letourneau.

Although acclaimed to the Catholic board, MacNeil said he hopes people take this election very seriously, especially in those areas where there are races for trustee. “I really hope everybody takes the time to get involved in the election and to vote,� he said. “Your voice matters!�

Petroff Achitects won out over three other firms to design a multi-purpose community centre for Pelham.

Town council approve the recommendation from its staff and its architectural design advisory committee at its regular meeting Monday.

The Toronto-based firm will receive $1.05 million to take the process through the first three design phases.

Treasurer Cari Pupo told council there are six phases of architectural work in a construction project such as a community centre.

The first three phases will bring the design to a stage that is would make it ready for bidding on construction but would not layout construction work, she said.

In answer to a question from Ward 3 Coun. Peter Papp, she said the remaining three stages would involve architect fees tied to the final cost of the community centre.

Bikoberfest roars on Saturday LCBO suggests lifestyle signage

for the VOICE This year Bruce Bissell has to worry about road construction as well as weather for the 12th annual Bikeoberfest.

If the weather is good as predicted, he expects more than 11,000 to attend the Fenwick Lions Club outdoor fundraising motorcycle show in Fenwick’s Centennial Park Saturday.

But he must get the bikers there safely.

He has to alert motorcyclists from across Ontario and neighbouring American states to avoid downtown road work in Fenwick.

“We will bring them in Foss Road and up Church Street,” he said. The bikers usually come down Maple or Canboro Road, both tied up by construction.

It will mean a change in the route of Friday night’s Ride of The Flags, which could involve 200 bikes.

The Ride leaves Clare’s Cycle and Sports on Hwy 20 at 6 p.m. It will go east to Effingham Street, south to Canboro, then east to Haist St., south to Welland Road, then west on Foss to Church and Centennial Park.

“People like line up on Haist to watch the bikes go by,” said Bissell.

At the park on Friday , the Lions will have a fish fry with entertainment by the

Chris Anton Band. Vendors will be set up.

Over 11 years Biktoberfest raised more than $670,000. The money has gone to Fenwick Lions projects as well as the Lions Foundation of Canada and Canadian Diabetes Association research.

Highlight of the show is a draw for a 2014 Harley Davidson CVO Road King motorcycle about 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

During the day, which begins at 9 a.m., more than 40 vendors will sell motorcycle gear and other items. Entertainment will include music by the Travelling Beer Bellies. New motorcycles will be displayed and riders will enter bikes in a show and shine.

“Harley Davidson will have some of its new bikes here including, for the first time in Canada, its electric bike,” said Bissell.

For the third year, BikerTV will film the event.

“It gives Pelham national exposure,” said Bissell. Friends in British Columbia saw last year’s show.

Assisting the Fenwick Lions are the Fonthill Lions with its 50/50 draw, Beamsville Lions, Fonthill and District Kinsmen, and the Diabetes Society.

Car parking will be through Pelham Fire Station No. 2 off Welland Road.

Last year it rained, but Bissell said draw ticket sales still went well.

This year weather predictions call for a sunny warm day on Saturday.

Community Centre (From Page 1) Town council has not decided to build a multi-purpose centre. Depending on what it contains, such as one or two ice pads, the estimated final price could range from $26 million to $39 million.

It did appoint an architectural design committee of volunteers drawn from groups interested in a centre.

John Nicol, chair of the committee, in answer to a question from Ward 2 Coun.

Gary Accursi, said the 13-member committee has been working with enthusiasm through 13 to 14 hours over four meetings.

“Everyone has left their baggage at the door,” he said about each member’s special interest.

The committee reached a consensus on the architect following guidance from staff on the procurement policy, he said.

Staff recommended using $600,000 already in the town’s 2014 budget for part of the fee and suggested including $450,000 in the 2015 budget.

With the possibility of a change in membership on council in the Oct. 27 municipal election, Accursi moved an amendment to take the $450,000 from a reserve fund. It would ensure the fee is paid without penalties in case there is a change of direction with a new council.

Ward. 3 Coun. John Durley recommended $450,000 in 2015 budget to replenish the reserve fund for other projects.

Mayor Dave Augustyn said by taking the community centre project through this design phase it will put the town in a position to apply for federal or provincial grants, if they become available.

Similarly, potential private donors will want to see what the town has planned before committing funds, he said.

Pupo estimates the three design phases, which involve working with the architectural design advisory committee, will take six to eight months to complete.

Ward 1 Coun. Jim Lane has a problem with revised signage on the new LCBO building.

“I don’t need seven signs to tell me where the liquor store is,” he told town council at its Monday meeting.

Planning director Terrance Glover presented council with a recommendation on how to revise signage on the new Liquor Control Board of Ontario building on Regional Road 20.

LCBO has applied for a variance from the sign bylaw.

The variance was deferred last month to allow the director to talk to the LCBO about ways to improve the look of the building’s exterior.

Glover said the LCBO is interested in adding “lifestyle signs which will enhance the animation on the street and driveway approach.”

Lane said he was not impressed with what was proposed.

Glover asked council to approve a conceptual variance and allow him to approve what is finally put up.

He would like to see the street animation more tailored to Pelham. He did praise LCBO for their co-operation so far.

Ward 3 Coun. John Durley said the building looks like a penitentiary but he was glad to hear LCBO was willing to listen.

Mayor Dave Augustyn broke a tie vote to approve the variance and the planning director’s role.

The new store is expected to open in October.

Terry Fox Run keeps hope alive

Cancer researchers in Toronto received news last week that they’ll be getting a share of a $14.6- million investment from the Terry Fox Foundation to unlock the secrets of hard-to-treat cancers and identify new ways to personalize treatment. The funds will go to investigators at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre (University Health Network), The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), Sunnybrook Research Institute, the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute (Mount Sinai Hospital), Ryerson University and the University of Toronto.

“Toronto has long been a hotbed of excellent cancer research, with many of the country’s top scientists and clinicians based here. This year, the Terry Fox Foundation is investing $14.6-million into innovative team research and, of this, $13.8-million will support work in the research laboratories of six major Ontario partners,” Dr. Victor Ling, president and scientific director of The Terry Fox Research Institute said in a press release. “Each of the three new Ontario-based projects we are funding has the potential to revolutionize care for patients with hard-to- treat or advanced cancers through a personalized approach to treatment.”

While research takes place in Toronto and around the world, Niagara plays a vital role in raising funds. Last Sunday, runners in Niagara Falls, Welland and St. Catharines all took part in another year of charitable donations to one of Canada’s greatest heroes.

Each year, thousands head out for the walk, run, or bike together for the simple goal of finding and curing the deadly disease.

According to the Canadian Cancer Society, an estimated 191,300 new cases of cancer and 76,600 deaths from cancer will occur in Canada in 2014. Prostate, lung, breast, and colorectal and prostate cancer account for the top 4 newly diagnosed cancers.

Change already has become visible. More people are surviving cancers that once took life away within a matter of months. Based on 2006–2008 estimates, 63 per cent of Canadians diagnosed with cancer are expected to survive for five years or more after a cancer diagnosis making the annual event a successful approach to challenging the disease.

Schools in Pelham will participate in the Terry Fox Run on Sept. 24.

Police search warrant leads to 18 unauthorized weapon charges

Detectives assigned to the Guns, Gangs and Grows Unit of the Niagara Regional Police Service began commencing an investigation into the unauthorized possession of firearms occurring at Foss Rd. in Pelham earlier this month.

On Sept. 10, a search warrant was granted for the property and later executed without incident with the assistance of the Emergency Task Unit.

The search of the property resulted in the seizure of 18 non-restricted firearms and 10,954 rounds of assorted ammunition.

The accused male, identified as 47-year-old Timothy Swick, has been charged with 18 counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm and four counts of careless storage of a firearm.

The accused male surrendered himself to police and was later released from custody pending a future court appearance.

Cats seek home while raising awareness on overpopulation Kitcat and Maybee are your average cats.

That’s why Johanna Tito, of Niagara Spay Neuter Assistance Program Inc., has been so surprised that they’ve been calling a pet store home for the last eight months.

The 11-month-old siblings have been vaccinated, spayed and neutered, and micro-chipped after being found on the streets in Port Colborne.

“They’ve reached that age where what you see is what you get. All they want to do is curl up and cuddle with a family,” Tito said.

“The hard part now is that the two have bonded so well together and it’s often hard to find a home. People sometimes don’t often appreciate that they too can form relationships and these two have over those eight months at the store.”

The organization sees far too many similar situations happening across Niagara.

“People don’t realize how quickly the colonies multiple. You’re in the forest area and farm lands where the colonies begin and it can be dangerous for them.”

be prevented with spaying or neutering.

“It’s such a simple solution to solve this problem but people aren’t listening. Instead of letting them go into the wild, give them to us or your local shelter to be spayed or neutered.”

With so many cats constantly passing through, the constant need for supplies are always present. The community continues to show strong support, along with the businesses in supplying litter, food and other necessities when housing a cat.

Book sales and other events help raise funds for those caught in the wild as the price can quickly add up.

“What we make in a year all goes towards cats. We spend nearly $400 on a cat, including their vaccinations and a micro-chip.”

Tito says the biggest need at the moment continues to be finding Maybee and Kitcat a loving family.

To find them that home, they will be hosting an adoption drive until Sept. 25 at the Pet Valu in downtown Fonthill where both together are $75.

YOUR OPINION ON THE NEW LCBO

I was recently driving westbound on Hwy. 20. As I was driving past what used to be Sobey’s, all I could see was “a liquor store”. I said to myself that this building completely blocks out the Sobey’s store until you have driven past it.

I think the placement of the new LCBO could have been situated a bit better or perhaps could have been a bit smaller. A town of 15,000 does not need a monstrosity of a liquor store. Not sure what the Sobey’s corporate people were thinking if they had any say as to the placement of the new LCBO. I think it was time for a new LCBO in Peham. The present store is dated, but I found it a bit unfortunate that its location will divert some of Sobey’s’ business.

I like Sobey’s in Pelham and do not want it to fail at the expense of an LCBO which will do fine wherever it’s located.

There was controversy in the town about a large sign on a convenience store a few years ago, we’ll this is a monstrosity compared to that. Can’t we control how the town looks? In a town so green and full if vegetation like Pelham, can’t we have trees first in front with a dignified sign saying what businesses lie behind?

Jim Stokes Although I believe Fonthill needed a new and fresh liquor store, I am jumping at the chance to offer my opinion of the new LCBO building probably because every time I drive by it I think the same thing about it. That would be the following: it is too big, too square, too high, and too close to the road.

You can’t see around it. It looms over the road beside you... it is simply a giant visual eyesore for this small town. I hope the inside of the store makes up for what can’t be changed on the outside. We are stuck with it forever.

Joanne Hancock You can’t beat getting a new LCBO in your town. Bigger and better, even if the outside is not as appealing as many would like. Hopefully the store will offer a wider selection of beers and liquors compared to the previous location.

I don’t think until it’s open will people understand how lucky we are to have an LCBO in our downtown. Places like Thorold have fought for the past several years to get one so despite the exterior, we should be grateful.

The purpose for my candidacy was to be a means of advocacy and education for Pelham residents and to encourage resident engagement in municipal issues.

When I started talking with residents about their needs, there was an immediate sense of common ground. Most people were aware of my struggles trying to obtain information from the Town and the subsequent lawsuit... people felt kindred.

They confided their concerns with the municipality without hesitation and were astute with solutions. When asked why these concerns and solutions are not shared with their councillors and/or mayor, residents commonly state because they don’t feel they will he heard and that action will never come to pass. This sentiment troubled me.

I then had the pleasure of learning about a group of citizens from Church Hill, in Fonthill, who are opposing a proposed zoning amendment in their neighborhood.

I heard their deliberation to council

and was reminded that the power for influence and change is stronger in the community rather than cloaked behind council policy and closed meeting sessions.

I therefore decided to withdraw my candidacy for councillor of Ward 1.

Instead, I will take on the role of advocate. I will be working at the provincial level encouraging the passing of Bill 8, The Accountability and Transparency Act. I will also be working inside local media to help educate residents on the business of local government and provide general suggestions on how residents can become more educated and involved in issues that surround them.

My decision fulfills my original purpose of nomination and puts me in the trenches with my neighbours.

Thank you to all those I have had the pleasure of speaking with over the past few months. I assure you that your concerns will continue to be heard.

Ward 2 Coun. Catherine King said there were “pros and cons to everything” and it is worth hearing more.

Mayor Dave Augustyn said council is setting up for the next term of council before new committees are struck. It is right to clarify the roles of staff, councillors and committee members.

There is a wealth of skills in the community and council wants to find ways to get the best advice, he said.

Councillors ask for views of volunteers for the VOICE Town councillors two weeks ago gave a “sober second thought” to dropping themselves off advisory committees.

A recommendation from its policy and priorities committee said councillors should not serve on advisory committees.

By doing so, they would develop recommendations that they would later judge when they came to council.

At last week’s regular council meeting, Ward 2 Coun. Gary Accursi, who was not at the policy and priorities committee asked that the recommendation be referred to the next meeting the committee.

He said the volunteers on advisory committees should be polled on whether they want councillors on the committees and what role councillors should play.

Ceremony in Ridgeville to honour brothers This Saturday, three brothers from the War of 1812 will be the focal point in a commemoration to honour their sacrifice and service.

The ceremony and dedication of grave markers to the trio who served with the 2nd Lincoln Militia in the War of 1812: Sergeant Mathew Haney, Private James Haney, and Private Leonard Haney. They were three of six sons of Isaac Haney, who served as the Warden of Pelham during that War. All three sons are buried at Hillside Cemetery, along with a younger brother, John.

The ceremony will be held at Hillside Cemetery, formerly Dawdies, 421 Canboro Rd. in Ridgeville at 1:30 p.m.. The program will include members of the Honor Guard of the 2nd Lincoln Militia reenactment group, a convocation by Rev. Diane Walker of the Pelham Community Church, Len Fluhrer, a military historian who was part of the Sir Arthur Currie Project, along with other speakers and other descendants.

The grave markers reflect the service medals that these men were suppose to have received 200 years ago.

Across A Continent and Time The application for the Haney veterans was unique in many aspects. First, it comprises three brother who are all buried at the same cemetery. But that isn’t the only unusual aspect.

The application was spear headed by a descendant of Leonard Haney. who lives in Alaska, thousands of miles from Ontario. Barbara Haney learned about the program though her involvement with the Niagara Peninsula Branch of the Ontario Genealogy Society via social media. As a young girl, Barbara’s father, Van Haney used to tell her about various battles during the war of 1812 and the Lincoln Militia that he learned about when he attended the Maple Street School in Niagara Falls.

Through the internet, documents at the Niagara Museum and Library and Archives of Canada were accessed to show most of what her father had talked about was accurate and that members of her family served honorably in the 2nd Lincoln. This included the payroll of Decew’s company that showed all three brothers were paid in the summer of 1814 during the time frame of the Battle of Lundy’s Lane, among other documents.

These combined with documents of other family researchers had provided over the years were used to apply for the markers. She submitted the application to the committee from her cabin in North Pole, Alaska.

1292 Pelham Street, Fonthill 905-892-5762 About the soldiers Mathew Haney was born in 1788 and married Anna Maynes, the granddaughter of Loyalist Nicholas Outhouse and daughter of loyalist George Maynes. He entered service in 1812 as a private and rose through the ranks as gunner and sergeant. After the war, he took over his father’s milling operations in Thorold. In later years, one of his sons, Henry R Haney, served as MP for the Monk Second Riding. Two other sons, Stephen and William, would own the firm that widened the Welland Canal. Another son, Mathew Fletcher Haney, would serve as a doctor and reeve in Humberstone.

James Haney, born in Thorold in 1791, entered service as a Private shortly after his brother Mathew and served to the end. His first wife, Elizabeth, died in 1829 and James married Mary Stringer as his second wife. He was noted as a builder and farmer and was one of the earliest settlers in Pelham.

Leonard Haney, born in Thorold in 1796, entered service as soon as he was old enough and also served during some of the most heated battles of the war, including Lundy’s Lane. After the war, he married Elizabeth Maynes, the sister of Mathew’s wife, and they had a large family, many of whom still live in the Niagara region and beyond. He was the first postmaster of Fenwick, and served as a Methodist Episcopal minister to Fenwick, Binbrook, and Gainsboro for over 30 years. Newspapers of that time wrote that his funeral procession was the largest gathering ever witnessed in the region.

Their father, Isaac Haney, received a crown grant in Thorold in 1796. He was a chain bearer for August Jones in 1788 when it was Township 9, Nassau and settled mostly by disbanded Butler’s Rangers. Isaac owned woolen and carding mills, lumber mills, and flour mills in the region and his sons remained in the area. Other family members included two sons, Ebenezer Haney and Isaac Haney Jr. who were early settlers in Elgin, and John Haney, who settled in Pelham. Another family member, Elizabeth Haney, died in June of 1812 during the war.

The Niagara Regional Police Service have seen an increase in the passing of counterfeit US $50 and $100 notes. The notes are being passed in a variety of local businesses by individuals making small purchases, and in turn, making payment using a US $50 or $100 counterfeit note in exchange for real currency. Individuals or businesses who, knowingly or not, accept counterfeit currency bear the loss.

Police say, ff you suspect someone has given you a counterfeit note, your personal safety is the utmost priority. It is possible that the person passing the note is unaware that the note may be counterfeit.

Advise the person that you suspect the bill is counterfeit and decline to accept it.

Ask for another note or method of payment. Advise the person to have the note checked by the police. Do not detain the individual but report the incident to the Niagara Regional Police Service.

If you suspect that you have received a counterfeit note, contact the Niagara Regional Police Service who will have the note analyzed.

Mandolin Orchestra tours musical world

for the VOICE Playing what’s in their heart, the Mandolin Orchestra of Niagara (MOON) stretches the limits of mandolin sound and technique.

Sylvia Hlywka Brabson, a leader in bringing the sound to the region, has conducted the orchestra and choir since its inception in 1996. “I was a pianist in another group before switching over to the mandolin and I instantly fell in love,� Hlywka Brabson said. “The variety of sounds we create makes for a perfect environment.�

The dominant sound of the orchestra is the mandolin and the mandolin family of instruments complemented

by piano, guitar, percussion, and bass viol.

Special effects are added by an eclectic group of other instruments including violin, clarinet, flute, accordion, bandura, Celtic whistle, banjo, tuba, flugel horn, and even bagpipes.

All the bells and whistles have made the group a mustsee concert. With previous shows featuring the themes of the Beatles and colours, Hlywka Brabson turned this year’s concert series into a trip around the world featuring a variety of sounds, played on the often unknown instrument.

Each style of mandolin offers its own sound quality and is associated with particular forms of music, allowing the orchestra to be creative when producing a concert. “We’ve been doing this for 20 years now and have gathered a nice following. At the same time, we still

meet a lot of people who have never heard of us,� Hlywka Brabson said.

The group – with members from Pelham, Welland, St. Catharines and Niagara Falls – won the 2011 Niagara Music Awards World Group of the Year but face the same challenges as some of the other performers in Niagara. “The majority of the members are seniors who are extremely talented musicians. While we take playing seriously, we’re always looking for fresh faces to join the orchestra.�

Ridgeville is not a hamlet yet

Town council has taken the unusual step of appealing a decision of the town’s committee of adjustment to the Ontario Municipal Board.

The committee approved a severance on a property in the northwest corner Effingham Street and Canboro Road.

Planner Julie Hannah said the severance is on property considered prime agricultural land.

Allowing a severance goes against the town’s Official Plan, regional planning policies, Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority, and provincial Green Belt policies, she said.

There is an assumption that Ridgeville is a hamlet and such a severance would be allowed.

“We’re facing a conundrum,” said Mayor Dave Augustyn.

Although the town has passed a resolution asking for Ridgeville to receive the status of hamlet, it has not been granted.

The town can’t act as though it has.

The owner of the 2.89 hectares would like to eventually subdivide the land. The existing house on it is a legal non-conforming use.

Council will appeal the committee’s decision to the OMB.

Calder to retire from the Shaw Festival next September Executive Director Elaine Calder announced to the Shaw Festival company today that she will be retiring towards the end of the 2015 season and moving to her new home in Victoria, B.C. to be closer to her family.

Ms. Calder has had a long association with The Shaw. She first joined the Festival as Executive Director in January 1990 for a period of four seasons, and returned in September 2012 to the same position. In the intervening years, she enjoyed a highly successful career managing arts organizations in Canada and the U.S., which included orchestras, opera and theatre companies and the National Arts Centre in Ottawa.

Working with the Board of Governors and Artistic Director Jackie Maxwell, Ms. Calder set three ambitious goals: to lead the management team in strengthening the Festival’s financial position, to rebuild The Shaw’s strong development team and programs with a renewed focus on stewardship; and to work through an orderly succession process, in preparation for her anticipated retirement at the end of her contract in September 2015. She will continue her strong focus on positioning The Shaw for future success during the remaining year of her tenure.

Ms. Calder is working closely with the Human Resources Committee of the Board and Artistic Director Jackie Maxwell to identify potential successors for her position.

A pilot project developed by Niagara Health System that aims to open lines of communication for kidney disease patients has received a $49,500 grant.

The Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement (CFHI) recently announced funding support for 22 teams from healthcare organizations across Canada to partner with patients and families on quality improvement initiatives. Included in that group is a Niagara Health System improvement project that will feature an online forum between patients through Google Plus and also include a monthly online chat for patients to connect with health experts. The goal is to help patients support each other, share information and provide feedback to program leadership.

“Owing to the nature of their illness, requiring chronic disease management, many of these patients are visiting the hospital several times per week, up to a maximum of five visits and will maintain such a routine for the duration of their life,” says Martin Ruaux, Director of the NHS Kidney Care Program. “The constant interaction with the system creates a significant opportunity to partner with patients and their families to make improvements for their quality of life and care.”

Patients at the hospital participating in the online forums will connect through the health system’s IBTs (Integrated Bedside Terminals).

Consultation with patients showed that although they visit the hospital regularly and often see the same fellow dialysis patients, they feel isolated, reporting the lack of physical proximity and noise from equipment in the dialysis area as barriers to interaction.

“These patients have expressed an interest in increasing their connections with one another in order to improve their sense of community as a patient population and feel more empowered in their decision making,” Mr. Ruaux says. “The project will also provide valuable insight into the potential for providing this service to other NHS patients requiring supports to manage chronic conditions.”

St. Catharines dialysis patient Paul Zuwala, who has kidney cancer and undergoes three three-hour dialysis treatments each week, helped NHS plan the project.

“Getting dialysis is very much an isolating procedure. It doesn’t allow for a lot of social interaction,” he says. “Anything we can do to help patients connect and navigate the system will be helpful.”

Through the Partnering with Patients and Families for Quality Improvement collaborative, CFHI is providing seed funding and program support, including evaluation and coaching. Teams will develop, adapt and share tools and approaches, implementing them in their respective organizations. Support will be provided by experts who have successfully engaged patients and families in quality improvement initiatives and have advanced patient- and family-centered care.

“CFHI’s support for patient engagement projects has demonstrated the transformative effect of the patient voice in healthcare,” says CFHI President Maureen O’Neil. “Giving patients and families a seat at the table will improve not only their own care, but healthcare for all Canadians.”

The Lego da Vinci’s robotics team headed to Brazil on August 30th to compete against 21 other teams at Festival Internacional de Robótica in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. The Pelham-based Canadian team was joined by 4 other International teams from Estonia, Austria, Chile and the United States, with the Brazilian teams making up the balance. This competition is part of First Lego League (FLL) International and the keynote speakers included Professor Woody Flowers of MIT, a NASA programmer and judges and speakers who are worldwide leaders in the science and technology fields.

The three-day competition included core values/teamwork challenges, a project presentation to a panel of International judges and robot design and programming examinations. The team had to decorate their booth (also known as “the pit”) with patriotic colours and entertain over 20, 000 local visitors from neighbouring schools. The President of Brazil was among the many visitors to the exposition over the course of the three-day challenge.

In uniquely Brazilian style, the days were filled with dancing, music and spontaneous team challenges. The second day began with robot races, where the individually designed Lego robots had to complete in an obstacle course.

The Lego da Vincis scored a personal competition best, placing them at the top of the field after the first two runs.

The team proudly took home 1st place in robot design, a testimony to solid robot construction, programming, presentation and points scored in the robot races.

Over the course of the week, the team learned so much and had lots of fun.

“Last year our families were provided

It wasn’t the perfect start to the season for the new Pirates.

They fell to the Ancaster Avalanche 6-3 in front of a packed Pelham Arena They showed signs of improvement since the preseason.

The Pirates got on the scoreboard first, with a goal from Shawn Rooke before penalty trouble took the wind out of their sails.

Two consecutive power play goals brought Ancaster to the dressing room with a 3-1 lead after the first period.

Pelham came out with the same energy as the first with two quick goals by Riley O’Connell and Pelham native Thomas Young.

Pirates continued to outplay the Avalanche until another penalty call saw players scramble to cover their men, allowing any easy scoring opportunity and the eventual game winner.

Brock Ackerman, the Pelham Pirates new captain, said the team came out with high expectations.

“We didn’t know what to expect coming in,” Ackerman said. “I think we surprised a lot of people that we hung around the entire game, so it’s really exciting what is happening with this team.”

Ackerman played with the Pirates last year, where he finished the season with 39 points. He will be asked to lead the offensive production but also mentor younger players on the roster.

“I remember being young and looking

up to the captain when I first joined, so I’m happy to provide that to this group of young guys,” Ackerman, who finished the night with an assist, said.

“Many of them it was their first game of junior [hockey] so they handled it really well.”

Another standout from opening night was from goaltender Matthew Camilleri.

Timely saves provided a chance for overtime until the Avalanche scored halfway through the third.

Ackerman said the importance of goaltending on a young team often goes unnoticed. Last year, the Pirates suffered in that department, nearly leading the league in goals against, something neither the captain nor the coach wants to repeat.

“We’ve got two great goalies between the pipes so if we tighten up our discipline on ice, we should be in pretty good shape moving forward.”

Big third not enough for Pirates Pirates were once again on the ice in a tilt against the Fort Erie Meteors.

Meteors waited for an opportunity and scored with just over five minutes remaining in the game. Shawn Rooke netted his second goal of the season as time ticked down as the Pirates fell to 0-2 on the young season.

The Pirates head into Niagara Falls this Friday for a game against the Canucks.

They will be back home on Sept. 26 to take on the Welland Jr. Canadians.

political newcomers, Mark Bay and Zachary Junkin, are challenging two-term incumbent Dave Augustyn for the town’s top job.

“The mayoral election campaign is about proven leadership and I am pleased that people have an opportunity to review progress to date,” said Augustyn.

“Under my proven leadership and service, and together with the efforts of council, staff and the community, we have achieved great results over the last eight years.”

Bay thinks it’s time for a change in the mayor’s office.

“We may need fresh blood,” said the 47-year-old electrician who works in the construction industry.

Bay said the three points are in his platform: strong and responsible leadership in both council and town hall; a curb on redundant waste capital by stopping doing things twice; and ensure all standards and guidelines as set out by all government agencies are adhered to and followed.

Junkin, a 29-year-old who grew up on a North Pelham dairy farm, said he was running because he is dissatisfied with the current administration and “the direction in which its so-called experience is taking the town.

“I feel that the administration’s track record of waste and poor planning is not something that I can support when I cast my ballot.”

Augustyn pointed to what he considered achievements of the current council.

Junkin “From better roads and more sidewalks and trails, to new playgrounds and new and improved parks, to renewed downtowns and improved community events, to huge investments by other levels of government, to better protections for agricultural lands and the Fonthill Kame, our town has improved substantially.”

Bay, a volunteer firefighter living in Fenwick, used fire department patches as an example of doing things twice.

New ones were designed and made two years ago, he said. Then the town created a new logo and brand. It meant a new set of fire department patches.

He also pointed to prolonged work on the reconstruction of Haist Street and wondered if Fenwick’s reconstruction would meet its deadlines.

“That suggests an issue of leadership,” he said. “Someone has to give direction from the top to get it right the first time.”

Junkin said he sees a growing alienation between the citizens of Pelham and the municipal government.

“That has no place in a small town like ours. I want to see this changed.”

While many running for town councillor and regional councillor are retired or near it, the mayor’s race is a young man’s game.

Augustyn is 44, Bay, 47, and Junkin, 29.

Junkin doesn’t see age as a drawback.

“It doesn’t take a lot of age or wisdom to recognize our town’s high taxes and wasteful spending,” he said.

Augustyn He recently completed a Master’s degree at the University of Waterloo and is part of a family team. His father Marvin Junkin is running for town councillor in Ward 1.

Bay said he was born in Ontario but lived in Alberta, Nova Scotia and other parts of Canada. He moved to Pelham nine years ago. This is his second election campaign. He unsuccessfully ran for Niagara Falls council.

“It’s given me perspective,” he said about his residential background. He is running “to get people talking about the issues.”

Junkin has his eye on how the town is growing.

“If elected mayor, I would work to ensure practical, sustainable growth for the town while curbing the wasteful spending practices that result in higher taxes with comparatively fewer services,” he said.

Augustyn grew up in the area and lives in Fenwick.

His goals if re-elected would build on what has been accomplished.

“My vision for Pelham continues to include appropriate and affordable parks and recreational facilities, vibrant and livable downtowns, safe and walkable neighbourhoods, lively cultural and artistic activities, an environment for small- and medium-sized businesses to thrive, improvements to our quality of life, protecting our natural and rural character while supporting agricultural operations, and maintaining Pelham’s friendly, small-town feel as we continue to grow and prosper.”
