Outdoor Studies Centre gets facelift Revamped facility will be better suited to meet students’ needs, asserts DSBN report BY ZACH JUNKIN

Renovations are well underway at the St. John’s Outdoor Studies Centre on Holland Road, where work is being done to update and improve the site’s main facility. According to a Finance Committee report presented to the District School Board of Niagara, the old building was “damp and dark, with limited space and in need of repair.” “The new building will be better suited to support Outdoor Education programming at the site,” states the report. Workers are reconstruct-
ing its two classrooms and office, and adding a new washroom. The DSBN hopes that the renovated facility will help expand programming opportunities available to children at the centre. “St. John’s Outdoor Studies Centre will offer programming that aligns with the Outdoor Education philosophy,” reads the report. “Programs will be inquiry and exploration-based, creative, innovative and adaptable—changing to meet the needs of our students and the season.” The work is being carried out, in part, by students from the Specialist High Skills Major program, which allows students to fo-

Pelham Council to DSBN: Not so fast BY VOICE STAFF At the June 6 Committee of the Whole meeting, Town Council passed a motion to send a letter to the District School Board of Niagara asking them to reconsider the new name given to E.W. Farr Memorial School. The Board voted to change the name of the Fenwick school to “Wellington Heights” last month, a decision that has raised the ire of many residents in that community. The motion to send the letter was put forward by Councillor Accursi. “I had some concerns brought forward to me by members of the community,” he said. “The concerns that have been expressed to me are that E.W. Farr was a very well-respected individual in the community and as such, has some historical value to having his name on there and recognised on that

On Monday, June 6, Pelham’s Town Council voted in favour of installing a chicane on Haist Street, just north of Highway 20. A chicane is an artificial feature creating extra turns in a road to slow traffic for safety.

Speeding has long been an issue for residents in the area, according to a staff report to Council. “In 2011, the Town of Pelham received an official petition from the residents living on Haist Street north of Highway 20, requesting that the Town consider installing a speed hump, based
