The beast inside us Reflections of a St. Michael's College alumnus BY COLIN BREZICKI
I Christmas in the country at Station No. 2 BY JENNIFER CHORNLEY
The VOICE
Christmas descended upon Pelham Fire Station No. 2 as the Friends of Maple Acre Library held their annual Christmas in the Country craft market last Friday, November 23 and Saturday, November 24. Some 15 vendors participated in the event, selling a variety of Christmas gift-giving ideas, home holiday décor, art, baking, culinary
delights and more. Lunch was also made available for the approximately 500 visitors who attended over two days. On Saturday, kids were able to visit with Santa and his elf assistant to chat about what they wanted for Christmas. Sandee Matthews is one of many volunteers who assist with the event. She says event proceeds support projects and initiatives at the Maple Acre Branch of the Pelham
Public Library. “The library is an integral part of our community and since the Town decided to keep it open, we will continue to support it.” Friends of Maple Acre Library was established in 1990 and still has many members, including their grown children, who continue to support the initiative, says Matthews. She extends a thank you to the all-around support the group receives.
“It’s a joint community effort and a really good group of friends who come together to make it happen.” Matthews also acknowledges the support of the Fenwick firefighters, especially since the Fenwick branch of the library started many years ago in a little room attached to the old Fire Hall. T WAS AS A STUDENT, in English class at St Michael’s College School in Toronto, that I first read Lord of the Flies. A bunch of English private school boys, marooned on a Pacific island, reverse evolution, shed their uniforms and thin veneer of civilized values and start to destroy each other. That was half a century ago, so it’s taken a while for the irony to surface. This month my alma mater is making unwanted headlines across Canada for its alleged history of bullying, victimization and sexual assault, supposedly done in the name of team spirit and bonding. So far, six students at the school, all minors, have been arrested and charged with criminal offences involving things like gang sexual assaults with a weapon. Late last week, the school’s president and principal both resigned. See COLUMN SIX back page
