Johnson, who gave away his skates after his first and only foray into hockey at the age of 15, will draw on his decades of experience as an elite level runner, bringing his vast wealth of knowledge from the track to the arena. Pelham Panthers Dylan Cancilla, Caleb Musket, and Mitch Rossit will look to improve their strength and conditioning through dry land training under former Olympian Ben Johnson.

“But when you actually play it, you realize how much you’ll be tested competing against these guys.”

Steven Mortier has played enough games against the Pelham Panthers wheelchair basketball team to know not to underestimate them. “You might have the perception that this is something that you can take lightly,” said the young man, who works as part of the management team at the Nike store in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Mortier and his team became involved with Pelham’s wheelchair basketball program as part of Nike’s ‘Access to Sport’ initiative which focuses on bringing sport to youth. Having worked closely with people with disabilities in the past, Mortier was quick to encourage the connection when he became part the Niagara-on-the-Lake store in the spring of 2014. Since then, Mortier and his teammates have gotten together about four or five times a season to pit themselves against Pelham’s veteran squad in fast paced games that are closely contested.
