Pelham Gateway Public Art Project finalists revealed Submissions from as far away as Spain vie for $200,000 contract BY VOICE STAFF The Town-appointed Pelham Art Selection Committee has chosen three finalists to undertake the Pelham Gateway Public Art Project to be installed near the southeast corner of Regional Road 20 and Rice Road, in the East Fonthill Mixed-Use Centre. The finalists were vetted from a list of 25 artists, who submitted credentials and previous examples of work for consideration. Each of the artists selected submitted a design proposal. These include “Pelham Gates” by Jennifer Marman and Daniel Borins, “Sculpture” by Juanjo Novella, and “Pelham House,” by Kip Jones. In their description of “Pelham Gates” Marman and Borins write that, “Tall poles resemble reeds or grasses, elegantly curved to suggest movement resulting from a gently blowing wind. Last week the Niagara open data community launched a new tool. The Niagara Open Data Portal is the result of a collaborative project undertaken by Niagara’s municipalities, community organizations and educational institutions. The portal aims to provide a free and open point for Niagara’s residents, businesses, schools and other organizations to access the Region’s catalogue of freely shared data charting information as diverse as road networks and heritage properties to quality-of-life ratings. The portal currently hosts 191 sets of data, contributed by the Town of Grimsby, the Town of Lincoln, Niagara Connects, the City of Niagara Falls, Niagara Region, the City of St. Catharines, the City of Welland, and Brock University.

“When government, businesses, non-profits and educational institutions come together to share data and resources, all of Niagara benefits,” said Regional Chair Alan Caslin. “The portal will open up data sets that provide real value and improved fact-based decision-making to Niagara’s small business and educational communities.” Pelham Mayor David Augustyn confirmed that the Town will soon get on board. “The Town will be participating,” he said. “Staff are continuing to work with the Niagara Open Data Portal.” The portal is meant to represent a collective shift toward a more open, collaborative and transparent Niagara. The Region also hopes it will help support small and growing businesses in Niagara. The portal is online now at www.NiagaraOpenData. ca
