Revelations prompt special Council session
Column Six On the Berkhout Trail
Mayor to take aim at Junkin’s decision to go public BY DAVE BURKET
The VOICE
After days of silence— apart from a Tuesday social media post—Pelham Mayor Dave Augustyn responded late last Friday to allegations made by former Ward 1 councillor Marv Junkin published last week by the Voice. Augustyn announced that Pelham Town Council would hold a special public meeting tonight at Town Hall, beginning at 6:30. The meeting, however, does not seem set to address the substance of Junkin’s allegations, but rather the manner in which they were revealed. (The entirety of the Mayor’s email to the Voice, and evidently to other media outlets, appears nearly identically in a Town advertisement on page 17.) Junkin resigned his Council seat on November 6, citing his concerns over Town actions that he called “unethical and dishonest.” Junkin said that on September 5, Council was privately presented the results of a forensic audit, commissioned without Council’s knowledge, which concluded that $17 million dollars in debt had gone unaccounted for in the Town’s books, bringing Pelham’s total debt to nearly $60 million dollars. Regional Audit Committee holds emergency meeting Calls on Town to release results of previously undisclosed KPMG audit said to push total Pelham debt to nearly $60 million On the heels of former Councillor Marvin Junkin’s allegations last week of financial uncertainty in Pelham, the Niagara Region’s Audit Committee hastily called an emergency meeting to be held yesterday morning, after the Voice went to press. Committee Chair Tony Quirk said Monday that after reading Junkin’s allegations, including that Pelham’s

And three, what, if any, obligation does the Region have to inform lenders of material misstatements?” Quirk said that it is the Region’s responsibility to ensure that it is not culpable or liable for any misstatements of the Town of Pelham. He added that
DA MP, DRIZZLY Sunday morning accentuates the Fall beauty of Pelham’s Gerry Berkhout Trail, a recreational gem in southern Pelham. Sneakers, hiking boots and mountain bike tires have all left their tracks in the cluster of red, yellow and gold leaves scattered across the smooth gravel trail. Vibrant orange leaves still cling to maples, oaks are draped in rusty brown, while birch and aspen glow yellow. Sumacs have turned to the richest reds, and berries of royal purple and translucent crimson brighten the trailside where sun sneaks through the forest cover. The trail follows the upgraded rail bed of the former Toronto, Hamilton & Buffalo Railway from Church Street in Fenwick approximately six kilometres east to Murdoch Streer, one country block from Welland. Access with designated parking is available at the east lot of Centennial Park in Fenwick, and off Foss Rd where Cream Street intersects the trail between Foss Road and Sumbler Road. For those willing to park on the shoulder of our quiet country roads, trail access is available at Bal-

total debt has actually ballooned to nearly $60 million dollars, he was concerned about the potential impact they could have on the Region’s finances should they prove true. Quirk said he contacted the Region’s CAO, Carmen D’Angelo, and found little reassurance. “Specifically, I asked the CAO three questions,” said Quirk. “One, has the Region received any correspondence from the Town of Pelham since Sep-
