Fonthill Platform Tennis celebrates 40 years After two years of toiling in futility, the Pelham Book Depot Panthers U11 girls team reached the Niagara Regional Girls Soccer Playoff Finals. Playing against an undefeated Welland team, the Panthers knew their task was a big one. The Pn and determination in giving the Welland team all they could handle. The Panthers held a wide advantage in the play but their Achilles heel of not being able to finish around the net reared its ugly head during the match played on September 15th in Fort Erie. The Panthers’ Marlize VanSittert gave the Panthers an early lead in the first half, scoring easily

on a team that has been very stingy in allowing any goals. Much of the play was in the Welland end and ball after ball went through the Welland goal area, but no one could find the handle to put it into the net. The Panther defence was strong in their support and helped hem in the Welland attack. The second half was a mirror of the first half. Welland had a few more scoring opportunities but it was Pelham’s lack of finish that ultimately allowed Welland to tie the game late in the half. The game went into two 10 minute overtime sessions. Welland took a lead early in overtime

putting Pelham into a must score situation. Playing through exhaustion, the Panthers continued to drive to the net. Late in the second overtime, Kate Knafelc beat the Welland defence and keeper. As the ball headed toward the net it hit a rut, changing the direction and it hit the post. It was not to be on this day for the Panthers though they gave an excellent account of themselves and they represented the Pelham Soccer Club well at the league finals.
