United Way kick-off gala held in Fonthill BY SARAH MURRELL VOICE Staff The United Way South Niagara (UWSN) kicked off the upcoming campaign in Pelham last week with a gala event celebrating those who give. At Casa Vostra in Fonthill United Way supporters had a chance to mix, mingle and be the change in the community as they enjoyed wine, appetizers, dinner and desserts. The gala was an opportunity for UWSN to introduce this year’s Campaign Chair, John Crocco. Crocco, Director of Education for the Niagara Catholic District School Board, acted as the Welland Chair last year. As MC of the gala Crocco acknowledged those in the room who have given, of their time, money or talents to the UWSN and introduced several speakers who finished the statement, “I give because...” Fred Farnham, better known as Freddy the Clown, delighted guests with his genial nature and good sense of humour. Commenting he doesn’t make a large donation, he did acknowledge that what he does give, a monthly donation, has added up over the past 30 years. Jodi McIntosh’s story, as told by Ad Lewis, brought the crowd to their feet, inspired and touched by McIntosh’s optimism and
commitment to helping others. McIntosh volunteers with the United Way South Niagara two days a week, helping to shred paper, add up donation cards and other administrative tasks. She also volunteers with other organizations, despite the challenges she faces with Cerebral Palsy. “Whatever is happening in my life disappears,” said Lewis of her work with McIntosh who is committed to her volunteerism despite her challenges. The evening finished with Peter Papp discussing his Three Amigos project, which includes Terry Duffy of Duffy Construction and Rick Lowes of Country Corner Market. The amigos have each donated $5,000 to create a leadership match, meaning they will match any new leadership donation ($1,000 or more) or an existing leadership donation that increased by 10 per cent or more, up to $15,000. Papp said he hopes the match challenge will inspire those who have never given to become leadership donors and those who are donors to increase their gifts. “All I want you to do is understand what we do,” said Papp, retired Executive Director of the UWSN. “Tonight’s not about Terry. It’s not about Rick. It’s not about me. It’s not about you. It’s about the
people we help,” he said. “This has been such an amazing evening,” said UWSN Board President Angela Carter, thanking everyone for attending the gala, contributing to the UWSN and impacting the community. Carter also announced a specific goal for this year’s campaign, something UWSN has not done for several years. “We will raise more than $600,000,” she said. Those funds will be allocated to local agencies who work within the UWSN’s three priority areas, helping kids and families be all they can be, building strong communities, and helping people move from poverty to prosperity.

The food was collected during the Fonthill Volunteer Firefighter Association’s annual food drive. Food for the Humane Society will also be collected during the association’s annual Toy Drive later this year. Sarah Murrell/Voice Photo
