Town honours volunteers Olympic cyclist and Fonthill resident Joseph Veloce praised the role of volunteers on a night set aside to honour 18 outstanding ones. He told a full house at Lookout Point Golf and Country Club last week the events he competed would fail without volunteers. Volunteers in cycling programs, helped him to fulfilled his dream to reach the Olympics. His original plan, he said with a laugh, was to compete with his father’s old bicycle on the hills of Pelham. He quickly learned from trainers, it would take more to race like Lori-Ann Meunzer, Canada’s gold medalist at the 2004 Athens Olympics. Inspiration is not enough, Veloce said, success requires great effort, dedication and perseverance. Veloce, is the 2013 Pan-American silver medalist and current Canadian record holder at 9.8 seconds in individual sprint. He plans to compete in Toronto’s 2015 Pan-Am Games and Rio’s 2016 Summer Olympics. He races in sprint, Keirin and team sprint competitions. During the Pelham Volunteer and Community Corporate Recognition Ceremony, awards were handed out to people selected by their organization for special recognition. Corporate winners were nominated by the organizations they assisted. Mayor Dave Augustyn, who acted as master of ceremonies, said the volunteers and awards ceremony inspires people to aspire to a better community.
