Former UCO employee to stand trial Dec. 11
George Tetteh by Andrew Knittle Staff Writer Oklahoma County District Judge Ray Elliott set a court date Oct. 25 for a former UCO employee charged with five counts of fraud and one count of perjury, according to Assistant Attorney General Kim White. Former UCO Risk and Insurance Coordinator George Tetteh will begin his jury trial Dec. 11 in an Oklahoma County courtroom. Oklahoma Cityarea defense attorney Richard Rice will defend him in court, according to court papers. Tetteh had pled not guilty at his May 9 arraignment before judge Gregory Ryan. White, who represents the state in the case against Tetteh, wouldn’t provide details other than to confirm that Tetteh was in court Wednesday and that the judge set a date to begin the jury trial. “Tetteh was in court [Oct.

25], he had pled guilty and now he will go to trial,” White said. Tetteh was arrested April 10, but walked out of county jail the same day after posting a $12,000 bond. The Oklahoma Attorney General’s Workers’ Compensation Fraud Unit became interested in Tetteh after he filed for compensation in March 2003, claiming he had injured both hands while at work. In an April 10 press release, Attorney General Drew Edmondson stated Tetteh continued to work rather than take time off to recover from his injuries. “Oklahoma workers’ compensation laws state that individuals can receive temporary total disability payments for work-related injuries, or they can receive their full paychecks,” Edmondson said. “Mr. Tetteh attempted to receive both. We allege he illegally took in $5,494.93.” Tetteh’s perjury charge stems from allegedly lying while under oath to investigators when questioned about the length of time he took off work following surgeries to his injured hands, the attorney general’s office said. Promoted to risk and insurance coordinator in 2004, Tetteh was terminated by UCO on May 5, nearly a month after his arrest. Andrew Knittle can be reached at aknittle@thevistaonline.com.

Lieutenant Colonel Fredrick Wellman speaks during the Passport to Egypt program Oct. 26 in Constitution Hall. by Ivo Lupov Staff Writer If there was a media score sheet describing the most depicted political issues, the war in Iraq would probably beat any of the past and present internal political scandals. The news coverage of former Rep. Mark Foley’s letters to a minor boy would look like sound bites.
Since many office specialists often criticize or promote the way, the current administration is handling the Iraq situation. Many who are up-to-date about Iraq question, “How many Americans have a clear view about the reality in the Middle East?” With the idea to give first hand professional opinion,
Violence in Iraq
UCO Passport to Egypt program and Leadership Central sponsored a presentation on the war given by Army Lt. Col. Fredrick Wellman Oct. 26 at UCO Nigh University Center’s Constitution Hall. During the ongoing local political campaigns, not many students or members of the community were interested in the problems in Iraq. Not bothered by the lack of interest, the Army guest gave a full presentation followed by audience questions. The discussion was about what works and what doesn’t in Iraq. Not challenged by any political critics, the Colonel was not afraid to give details about some military mistakes the command did after the end of the conflict’s first phase. Lt. Col. Wellman, a 1987 West Point graduate with a Bachelor of Science in international relations, prior to his service in Iraq, took part in Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm and Desert Fox, earning him vast combat experience. He was deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from February 2003 to January 2004 as an Executive Officer of Air Assault. In February 2004, he was deployed back as a Public Affairs Officer, served with the Multi-National Security Transition Command-Iraq, and took part in training, equipping, rebuilding and mentoring the new Iraqi Security Forces. by Desiree Treeby Staff Writer Recognized as a “real leader,” head soccer coach Mike Cook watched his team become champions of the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament. They’re an “incredible team” with an “incredible coach,” President Webb said talking about the 18 – 3 team for his Lessons in Leadership class Monday. Beating Texas A&M University-Commerce Sunday by one point named them tournament champions. They also claimed the No. 1 title for regular season play. “They’re a group of women who understand what it’s like to play as a team,” Webb said. “They’re one of the great teams I’ve seen come through here.” When one gets hurt or is having an off day, another steps up and they continue to win, he said. Webb described Cook as having five essential leadership qualities that show as proof with his winning teams: commitment, focus, positive attitude, fairness and constancy. Cook is also an “authentic leader,” who “brings others together to accomplish a goal.” “One of the things I appreciate most about him,” Webb said talking about his positive attitude. “He’s always up and never down.” When talking about Cook’s fairness and constancy, he said that people want to follow
