VOL. 1 | NOVEMBER 2020 MACLAGAN The History Behind MacLagan By Arushi Aggarwal Back in June, when we first conceptualized a literary newsletter, we had a vision of everything but the name. Shortly after, we received a particularly puzzling suggestion by the name “Maclagan”. When you google Maclagan, the results to follow emphasize a quaint town in Queensland, Australia. The second result, on the contrary, discloses a much more important piece of history within the guise of an administrator named Edward Douglas MacLagan. In the days to follow, we rediscovered a forgotten tale that lay in the very foundation of Punjab Engineering College. While we know PEC as the home to the prodigal Kalpana Chawla marked by the famous helicopter that graces its administrative block, a simple skim reveals a story much richer and substantial than ever imagined. PEC first took its roots almost a century back in 1921, going by the name Mughalpura Technical College in Lahore, Pakistan. Just two years after establishment, it was renamed Maclagan Engineering College when Sir Edward Douglas Maclagan, the then Governor of Punjab, laid the foundation of the main building. It’s much more than just the names and locations PEC has held throughout the years, but the way this campus has something to offer to everyone. Coming to the campus holds different emotions for each one of us at different points in time. Most are anxious and full of fears when they first step onto the soil of PEC, only to get comfortable and acquainted with each nook and corner in the four years to follow. On the eve of the end of the 99th year since the establishment of the college, we look forward to the virtual event organized heartily by faculty and students alike, reminiscing all that the college holds for us and paying homage to the past that has paved the way for the present. In a similar spirit, we attribute our first edition of Maclagan to the original publication of The Maclagan, which existed way back in 2012. The Chief Editor at the time, Davis Joseph, was the first to realize the need for a literary newsletter allowing free thought — a publication for the students by the students. While the Editorial Board lacked funds to back up the publication financially, Davis paid out of his own pockets to bring his vision to life. The contribution of the Beans from both the past and the present has been of utter importance and I cannot express my gratitude towards the team, without whom, Maclagan would not have been possible. We hope you enjoy reading this as much as we enjoyed making it.
